Have you consider NOT splitting the room in half with a wall? Just open it up on the far end of the room for your double height library. Leave the rest of the room as a reading room etc. Then if you host weddings the entire room could be used for seating? Maybe have a sliding door feature to separate the two sections as needed?

    • @andreastieff
      @andreastieff Рік тому +68

Billy, for wedding possibilities in the double height library, have a look at The Peabody Library. My daughter was married there ; after seeing it as a child, she always loved the space. Apparently it was the inspiration for the library in Beauty and the Beast. All your hard work will come to fruition when you’re able to host events and guests.

yes, wedding ... but also business conferences, retirement parties, anniversary parties,
      fundraisers, galas ...
      The list could go on.
The siding separator door is a great idea.
Maybe even cut the room in three sections with two separator door (slides, whatever).
For business conferences, there can be a general meeting, then three breakout meeting.
      So many posibilities!

Billy I sent you a message via Insta, I heard you say tht you needed some steps to get up to the shelves in the kitchen. I a bought a small set of steps in oak a few years back from Bruneau that came from a 'convent', I suspect that it came from your convent. If you like I can send them to you, a bit bulky to wrap and tomorrow I am off travelling for two weeks so I will sort it out when I get back if it is something that you would like. They are really sturdy and great quality, they do need a good deep clean to get all the old wax off. Let me know, xo

@@janetpendlebury6808 I was planning to send a second hand book (IF he would even want for this to happen).
I think you would be quite surprised at the rates for overseas courier from Canada (my home) to England or France….not really that bad for a courier envelope with a book inside.
Of course it would only be if you could afford to send it. Think of his patrons! They can afford to be patrons. I can’t, therefore, I am not. However, I can afford to ship a book for $30-$40 bucks.
Besides this was just a couple of gals shooting the poo, trying to be positive and having a little fun and daydreaming of the “what if my book ended up in an old restored convent in France”…..but hey thanks for being the proverbial Debbie Downer 😊

    Hi Billy,
II used to manage my neighbours' Manoir in France. It was 16 century. He opened up the 2 levels and made the large lounge into a galleried library all in oak. I know it was quite wide as he had a chez lounge on an angle up on the gallery. He did the railings in wrought iron.
The bookcases were only upstairs. And the downstairs was just panelling.
If you did it that way, you could save the original panelling you have downstairs. And save money too. It was very impressive. And he had a grand piano in the downstairs area. When it was played, the whole room came alive.
If you want to have a look at what he did there, look up la Croix Rompue in Normandy. There are a couple of pictures on there that will give you an idea. The 2nd shows you one of the upstairs windows of the gallery. You can see the folding shutters on the inside of the windows which looked fabulous when closed. And he had the stone spiral staircase in the tower that took you to the galleried area.
It is a rental so no probs in looking at the photos.
I hope you see this comment and find it of interest?
    Debbie

If you are doing the second floor ceiling in the library I think you should do it's design and sand blasting before you remove the floor. That makes it easier for the workers to get up there. The final finish will likely need to wait until the rest of the construction is done. But doing as much as you can before removing the floor should save a lot of time and money. I love the idea for the library. Once the shelves are in place you will have a masive shopping task to fill them. I can imagin that you will be at it for a long time. I wonder if there is a library that is being dicommissioned that may be a good source. So looking forward to the kitchen's complation and I am salivating on the Idea of a library. I love your channel and the projects are so very interesting.

On a serious note, I'm sure you already have vague idea how much that amount of oak, work and craftsmanship might cost, so I'll focus on the idea as such - it's amazing! Nothing can be so incredibly serene, elegant, poised and warm, soothing and inviting at the same time as library. They are the best indoor places to grow up at, to daydream, to learn, to hide from the world and to discover all sorts of secrets and magnificent things that books are hiding. I can't wait for that journey to begin. My dream would be a library cafe with french bistro round tables around, strategically positioned warm lighted antique reading lamps and most comfortable armchairs executed in leather, where book lovers can indulge in reading while enjoying good coffee, tea or home made pie, brioche, croissant...Kids could have their own section with toys and themed afternoon in a 'storybook lady' style, where someone would read them a passage or two from a book for example...pleasant place for everyone on a rainy or snowy day. I feel the place might get much more use if multipurpose and way more people an enjoy in it's beauty. Good luck! XOXO

As one who writes books, I simply LOVE your idea for a library! We're being told all the time that print books are a thing of the past and that we should all embrace e-books as the future. But nothing is the same as holding a printed book to read and being in a beautiful library. When you buy an e-book, it could go away quickly, from things as mundane as expiration of digital rights to it. But when you buy a printed book, although they can decay over time or be destroyed by natural disasters, it seems more lasting and solid. Just like the convent, and just like what it will become when you are done with it. Kudos to you for having the vision and perseverance to make your visions a reality!

Billy can I ask if you intend to have a business space if the convent becomes a hotel or conference centre ?.The ground floor room that you intend to make a double level library could be used as a conference room or business centre for big companies running bonding experiences in their company ,meaning that the convent could be booked by major companies .

The library will be magical. Bravo. Maybe a secret door to enter from the 2nd floor? A bookcase that opens.

That Osmo stuff is amazing! Those doors are gorgeous! I tend to agree with those who say don't split the room, but put in big, beautifully carved wooden accordion type doors instead. It would be a wonderful way to keep the original, larger room , but split if needed. Can't wait for this project!

Billy, since the convent is one of the focal points for local history, maybe you could look into allowing the local historical and genealogical society to utilize the new library as their new home. Perhaps allowing a non profit civic organization to use this part of the convent would afford you a tax deduction as well as build even more good will in the community. In the U.S. many such historic organizations typically are tax exempt, and run by volunteers on extremely tight budgets funded by charitable contributions. If it were feasible, it seems like hosting the local historical and genealogical society in one of the most historic buildings in town would be a great idea, and would allow the convent to continue to play an important role in the community.

I would have Ryan contact some libraries, schools, universities if they are willing to donate old books, encyclopedias and reference material so you can fill the shelves. All those places usually have tons of them sitting in a basement or storeroom collecting dust.

Billy I hope you do decide to include a ‘sky light’ feature in the library, maybe some custom or re proposed stained glass in front of a light box to illuminate the glass. The play of colour on the library would be a thing of great beauty.

Mayby not splitting the room in half but like 3/4 of the room would be a library, or if not, split firts floor of the library like you said and on the next floor make the room bigger with a nice big balcony (idk what is it called) when you could place seats for people who would like to read books on the second floor
