That one peg that popped out and didn't have to be drilled out (maybe there are more?) should be made into a key chain fob for the finished library keys. So lovely to see Simon back on the channel! 🙌🏻🥰
The library design looks fantastic. I do wish you had room or could incorporate a SPIRAL STAIRCASE into the design and make it truly one room connecting both floors together without leaving the room to access the second level of the library However I have confidence in your dreams and vision Billy. I think you proved yourself by the beautiful kitchen you created. Love ❤️ you and your family. Looking forward to what Michael will do with the Chapel ceiling. God bless you brother and your family ❤️
I was thinking the same thing. A nice iron spiral staircase somewhere would be cool. I also think they should expand the library to take the whole room (I think he said they were going to split the room up in the last video)
Definitely a spiral staircase! That way, when you're in the downstairs portion of the library and need to go upstairs, you don't have to leave the room, walk down the hallway, take the stairs by the elevator, and take the hallway back to the library! Plus, a spiral staircase seems like a classy French way of decorating the room. :)
I agree. Without a spiral staircase up to the gallery you will basically have two libraries. A first floor library and a second floor library. Hopefully the book you are looking for isn't on the opposite floor.
Doesn't the library already have the old oak stair case leading up there already? I prefer this one. A spiral staircase can be saved for the church gallery (if they are lucky to find one!)
What incredible workmanship the builders of the 1700’s had! The construction of the timber frames were intended to last forever! This building is revealing so much as you progress with the renovations
Deconstruction is always fun at first. The layout of the library looks good but you need some room for a stairway between floors. I would make the balustrade smaller so there would be some seating at the top of the library also with some cosy tables and a place to set your tea.
Wonderful to see Simon's face and hear his voice again! I can't believe how much you have gotten done in three months. Billy, let Simon compliment you on that masterpiece of a kitchen, you both deserve a huge Congratulations on a truly amazing room. I appreciate you all, thank you for continuing to share yourselves with us, and welcome back, Simon!
No wonder these buildings have stood for hundreds of years. Their carpentry skills are amazing. This demolition project is massive! The library will be as gorgeous as the kitchen.
You and your team, Billy, are time travelers. You've put your hands on the very wood that craftsmen fashioned into walls during the 1700s. It's fitting that modern craftsmen are doing a sympathetic restoration and repurposing of the convent.
so I imagine all those rooms and corridors would naturally have some 16 th century walls and basic structure … what is left after the modern terrible refit?.. can you give us more info on the upstairs refit..and what it could have been like, … not sure 1:42 how you address question editions to earlier emails?… but hope to get a reply to a historical question… thanks in advance Billy 😮🎉 😮
I have followed you (silently, no comments) for a long time and have enjoyed all that you are doing. I’m especially interested, though, in the library. Do you have plans for what books to put there? I’m an academic librarian by profession and putting together and organizing library collections is what I do (I also teach future librarians). Would love to learn more and if there is something I can help with, that’d be great.
Hello all, you are doing such a magnificent job at the convent. Just a suggestion for the gally of the library, your designer drew balustrades and, if not too expensive, it would be nice if they matched the balustrades on the main staircase.
Modern builders and what is referred to as today's craftsmen wouldn't even put 1/2 as much time, care, energy and tenacity into their work and most if not all, done by hand w/ homemade tools. The minds and bodies of the past were in many ways superior and internal pride and ethics were at the forefront and valued.
@Julie-bq6iz that would be very very fitting that's good oak and free as well put back some of what was removed all be it turned in to hand rails and such very good idea I love it
Hey Billy - oh my it’s going to be fantastic. Only thing I’d say is I think maybe a good idea to join access to the top and bottom library by putting in a metal/wrought spiral staircase. Then the lower bit could be a relaxing zone with wingback chairs and low tables, a cabinet for wines or single malts, and a couple of comfy sofas maybe. Then you have a space to go to after you’ve dined. I do feel cutting off access between the upper and lower library may be a mistake. The progress you and the chaps have made is staggering though and we always watch with keen interest! We love this channel - one of our faves!! ❤❤
Who knew it would be so difficult to tear down a 250 year old wooden framework!? Those guys were some serious craftsmen back in the day! Welcome back, Simon-- and Happy New Year everyone!
Billy, when I first saw the new balustrade design, it reminded me of your beautiful railing in the stairwell. It would be nice to have it similar, doesn't have to be exact, but similar for continuity. People have suggested a spiral staircase, I'd hate to see your open gallery, which looks so balanced, disrupted. Maybe one could be put in a corner or just outside the doors? Maybe that's what others are thinking?
Billy you have a twinkle in your eyes which means you are happy!!! Onwards with the library and Simon is back!!! The library is going to be amazing just like the kitchen. Your plans never cease to amaze me. Looking at the wood you are removing, I imagine what the carpenters back in those days would think if they could see the tools that modern carpenters have today!!! You now have a complete team for the job with the best workers to be found!!!! Best.
Just a couple foods for thought: you might want to consider extending at least some of the book shelves over the doors and windows. It may be more cohesive & not so boxy / regimented looking, creating a more finished look. Also, you may want to use the balastade design from the master staircase for continuity & in keeping with the original design of the convent.
Great to see Simon back 🎉. Guys please wear masks and eyes protection. You might think you are immune but don't wait until you are older with a COPD to say you wish you had😔🙄. Take care x
You have made a lot of memories with you family. It's nice to have your dad my your side. My mom is no longer to work by my side and I miss that very much.
Good to see that Simon has made it back. As quickly as things have been moving along, I imagine it will go even more quickly now. Good to see you’ve returned, Simon.
The visualization is very helpful! I could see events happening in the dining room that spill over into the library for cocktails, for example. So, seeing the furniture in that room is helpful for scale. Also, I didn't see a staircase in that room, so knowing that it is just outside the door with the lift makes perfect sense. Such a beautiful, inspiring and bright space will be a great asset to that building.
It's stunning the carpenter work they've done back in the days! Amazing artisans! So well made ,so strong! I can't stop admiring their skills.😮. Good to see you back Simon, good luck with your own place!
No ‘desks’ in the library but round tables, also seating area with couch and chairs. If you have a gathering then the library could also be used as a reception area extension.
The library should have a staircase, like a spiral one to access both floors from within the room. I could imagine you planing down some of those interior wall oak beams and studs for a project. Just beautiful! When the main wall beam came down, all the dust sent me into a trans-Atlantic virtual allergy attack haha😂 Hi Simon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🎉 Happy New Year to the Pethericks and all!!
I think you could ask all your viewer's around the world to send beautifully old books in their own language for the library, and write notes in the books in english. Love all the work you all are doing 🎉
You are correct that adding flitch plates to the sides of the beam would not look right - but adding one inside the beam using a chain mortiser (a cross between a router and a chainsaw) should be possible and a good joiner could hide the work -and the bolt holes -completely. Alternatively, by hanging from above you could hide the rods inside the upstairs partitions and possibly take the load from an RSJ in the attic. If you do decide to replace the beam, you might not need to dismantle upstairs - by propping the ceiling it might be possible to drop the old beam by a few inches and feed it out through a hole in the wall and the new one back the same way. All these methods have been used elsewhere. It would be a good idea to cost all the options first - a beam that big may well be very expensive.
LOVE the idea of the balustrade having a very wide top on which one might place a book to review. Also, kudos to the designer to mostly matching the balusters with the design of the main staircase. Great job, Billy!! Hope you'll still be our main emcee! It's you I follow. 🙂
Wow you have such vision The library is going to be stunning Your commitment to the restoration of the convent is to be applauded Future generations will be able to use this beautiful building for so many different purposes Well done and thank you
It's a joy to see someone rebuilding a library these days. So many libraries are being phased out with the dawn of the digital age. Nothing quite like a real library with real books filling the shelves.
It's mind-numbing to think of the amount of physical labour that must have gone into this building. Harvesting the trees, milling the wood, cutting the wood to length (tenons and mortises) and erecting. Great to have Simon back. Now crack on!
Hurray, Simon is back!!! Amazing construction. All of those timbers where handmade and then hand fitted with mortis and tennon joints. Things just aren't built that way anymore.
Billy has the most amazing and talented crew. Alex, Simon, Nick, Yannis and Mick. Excited seeing Simon back again. The library is going to be stunning. Maine USA
That library will be wonderful. Forget the office furniture, you need comfortable chairs and maybe window seats! The green and oak design is gorgeous. Would you consider keeping a corner of the convent as a museum? Show the 1970s cheerful cell next to an austere 19th century cell….maybe a room stripped down to its 250 year old carpentry too. This history is so fascinating to me: the lives of the nuns, the craftmenship of 200 years past, the ancient wood etc. I see how you too revere the history of the lives lived in the convent including those that built it.
Another ceiling restoration in Simon and Yannis’ future. Exciting! Welcome back, Simon. Good luck, Petherick Team, and thank you for providing us with another project to entertain us and admire! Blessed 2024 to Everyone.
Welcome back Simon and kudos to you Billy, for the work you've done and for having such a grand vision for the convent! It takes gigantic "bell clappers" to take on a project like this! LOL!
It is amazing seeing that old timber with the old hand-hewn marks, mortise & tenon joints with wooden pegs. They were built to last forever apparently. So good to see Simon back. Your Dad is looking fit & trim, and it is easy to see that you all got your work ethics from your hard working, talented parents. Best wishes to you all going in to 2024.
Ahhhhhhh sooooooo glad to see Simon back , I’m sure Yanis is happy 💙💙🇬🇧
From all us Ladies and Gentleman, it is so good to see you Simon, welcome back, you were missed.
Billy’s dad has got so much energy. What a great guy.
As a senior citizen myself, it's good to see that your Dad is so active. Welcome back, Simon. All of you are amazing!
That one peg that popped out and didn't have to be drilled out (maybe there are more?) should be made into a key chain fob for the finished library keys.
So lovely to see Simon back on the channel! 🙌🏻🥰
I think you need a spiral staircase between the floors, or it'll feel like two rooms. And welcome back Simon.
I was a little disappointed at the lack of a staircase, thus access from the ground floor. I know it will look wonderful when you are done.
It looks amazing but I agree it needs connection. It’s like two separate libraries.
Yes!
Spiral staircase 👍
Interesting idea
Glad to see Simon back again. He is such a hard worker, just like his protege.
The library design looks fantastic. I do wish you had room or could incorporate a SPIRAL STAIRCASE into the design and make it truly one room connecting both floors together without leaving the room to access the second level of the library
However I have confidence in your dreams and vision Billy. I think you proved yourself by the beautiful kitchen you created. Love ❤️ you and your family. Looking forward to what Michael will do with the Chapel ceiling. God bless you brother and your family ❤️
I would have an internal spiral staircase up to the gallery.
Welcome back Simon, you have been missed.
I was thinking the same thing. A nice iron spiral staircase somewhere would be cool.
I also think they should expand the library to take the whole room (I think he said they were going to split the room up in the last video)

SIMON’S BACK!! Hooray!!!! So happy to hear his velvety voice again. What joy!!
I was thinking the exact same thing! Oh..... and the library is going to be gorgeous when it's done😊

Good video. Nice to see everyone. Yanis must be super happy Simon is back. I enjoy Simon’s calmness, explanations, and politeness.
Ladies and gentlemen, Simon is back! We’ve missed you.
He’s back, if you like 😋
Welcome back Simon. Pop's deserves a rest, he works so hard.
You and your team, Billy, are time travelers. You've put your hands on the very wood that craftsmen fashioned into walls during the 1700s. It's fitting that modern craftsmen are doing a sympathetic restoration and repurposing of the convent.
Well put , I agree.❤
Fantastic to see you, Simon!!! Hope you’re doing well and this year will be spectacular for you.!!! Happy new year !!!
Doing a great job! Interesting! But with all that dust that's 200 years old everone should have a mast on! To be safe fron lung problems later on!
so I imagine all those rooms and corridors would naturally have some 16 th century walls and basic structure … what is left after the modern terrible refit?.. can you give us more info on the upstairs refit..and what it could have been like,

I have followed you (silently, no comments) for a long time and have enjoyed all that you are doing. I’m especially interested, though, in the library. Do you have plans for what books to put there? We are also curious about this topic! Where/ what books will be there. See @nacelestine's comment regarding an idea for developing the collection.
Billie, your father is amazing. Welcome back Simon. What a way to start 2024.
Every episode I see Mick, working so hard, it makes me smile.
It is awesome to see your dad working and helping you!
So good to have the team back together. Welcome Simon, you were missed.
Welcome back Simon, we’ve missed you!

Isn’t it amazing that the craftsmen that put those beams in did it 250 years ago.
ALIENS!
I think that too! They would be amazed at all the tools nowadays that would have made their lives so much easier!!
With only hand tools
@joycearmstrong8628 right?!
A BIG WELCOME BACK Simon we missed you!
So great to see Simon! And Yanis is stronger in both muscles & confidence.
& Mick's strength & stamina are impressive.
Such great team work!
Omg! Is that a Simon? YES! Sooo good to see him again! Yanis must be thrilled!
So pleased to see Simon 😊
Well done fellas. Great day of progress. Welcome back Simon! It's so good to see you again. The team is back to full, familiar, strength.
I was really excited when I realised it was Simon in the opening shots...great to see the band back together!!!
I was just hoping that Simon would be retuning soon and there he is. Welcome back Simon and you guys are just amazing.
For the railing in the library it would be nice if it was possible to match the one in the main stairway. Welcome back Simon.
Brilliant idea!
I had the same thought. Perhaps using the oak studs that were just removed.
Agree. Or a somewhat modernized version to be a bit less heavy, but mimic the lines and style of the original.
@Julie-bq6iz that would be very very fitting that's good oak and free as well put back some of what was removed all be it turned in to hand rails and such very good idea I love it
Great idea!!

Looking forward to seeing Simon again. He'll be so proud to see how productive Yannis and the rest of the crew have been.
Isn’t he already there?
Yay, hello to Simon, welcome back. So excited to see your adventures. You have been massively missed.
Dr. Rush is back!
Hope all is well on "Destiny."
Billy, your dad is a work horse.
Who knew it would be so difficult to tear down a 250 year old wooden framework!? Those guys were some serious craftsmen back in the day! Welcome back, Simon-- and Happy New Year everyone!
A black steele spiral staircase would really look amazing in the library i think.
Got to have an awesome spiral staircase somewhere in that space that is an eye catching part of many old libraries! Crack on !
Absolutely needs a staircase!
Imagine being a hotel guest there and being able to browse and buy books during your stay.
Welcome back Simone. Great job everyone. Love the design of the library.
I'm looking forward to seeing Simon and Yanis working together again. Hopefully, Simon is proud of how much Yanis has learned since he was away.

I completely fan-girled "SIMON'S BACK!"...so glad he's back at the convent. Seeing how the 4 of you work together as a team is so heartwarming.
Me too😂😂😂😂
The team, like a well-oiled machine, is back in operation. Great to see Simon back!
Nice to see Simon back. That Guy Knows what he's doing.
Mick is a work horse bless him. Welcome back Simon 😊

so good to see Simon and Yannis in the same video together, working with the Petherick's, nothing can stop you now!!
YAY Simon is back!! The Entire crew is back whoop whoop! And that Library looks BEAUTIFUL! Wow😳 but a Good Wow!😊
Good to see that Simon has made it back. As quickly as things have been moving along, I imagine it will go even more quickly now. Good to see you’ve returned, Simon.
Welcome back, Simon!
Billy, your Father is a Gem!
A gorgeous spiral staircase up to the top floor would look beautiful
That would be nice.
That would old school great!

It's stunning the carpenter work they've done back in the days! Amazing artisans! So well made ,so strong! I can't stop admiring their skills.😮. Good to see you back Simon, good luck with your own place!
Really appreciated Simon’s explanation of how the walls were constructed and especially the information about the mortise and tenon work.
No ‘desks’ in the library but round tables, also seating area with couch and chairs. If you have a gathering then the library could also be used as a reception area extension.
Wait..... Is that.... SIMON? YAY!!!! Welcome back Mr!! Happy new year everyone! xx
The library should have a staircase, like a spiral one to access both floors from within the room. I could imagine you planing down some of those interior wall oak beams and studs for a project. Just beautiful!
When the main wall beam came down, all the dust sent me into a trans-Atlantic virtual allergy attack haha😂

The professor is back! Welcome back, Simon!! Library looks beautiful. 😊
Simon is Back!! 😊
Yayyyy 😁
Simon, my crush, is back!!!!! Yay!
So nice to see Simon back again.

Yay! The 3 amigos are back together. Billy, Simon and Yannis ❤. So glad to see you back Simon, we have missed you.
For your baluster design I recommend you go try to mimic (copy would probably be too much) those found on the old original staircase.
Good idea
Seconds into tuning in, I found myself yelling "He's back!"
Me too
LOVE the idea of the balustrade having a very wide top on which one might place a book to review. Also, kudos to the designer to mostly matching the balusters with the design of the main staircase. Great job, Billy!! Hope you'll still be our main emcee! It's you I follow. 🙂
Hello Simon, good to see you back😊 Those old timbers are beautiful. If they could talk, the stories they could tell!
Wow you have such vision The library is going to be stunning Your commitment to the restoration of the convent is to be applauded
Future generations will be able to use this beautiful building for so many different purposes
Well done and thank you
The balustrade, I believe it should be the same design as in the original stairwell.
Billy, don't forget to have one of those bookcases be a "secret" door. ;-)
Well. This is exciting. Yay yay Simon is back. Welcome back Simon.
Happy to see Simon back! What an incredible amount of craftsmanship needed to construct those walls; built to last over 2 centuries!!
So happy to see Simon back. He adds a lot to the show - his expertise and the way he explains things. The library is going to be absolutely beautiful.
Holy moly !!! They sure made the door frames to last a lifetime !!! Welcome back Simon 😊 Must have been wonderful to see the kitchen !!
Billy always with a quality team alongside him, a lot of knowledge swirls in, out & around him. So good !
Birds of a feather you know…..
The Convent went from having an A team to an A+ team now that Simon is back! Yay!
I can't believe the progress. It's great to see Simon back.
It's a joy to see someone rebuilding a library these days. So many libraries are being phased out with the dawn of the digital age. Nothing quite like a real library with real books filling the shelves.
The library at the schools I work in didn't use UV protection in the windows and everything has faded terribly from the sunlight. Just a suggestion.
Simons back! 👏🏻
So happy Simon is back xx
I would love to see Barnwood Builders see this construction
Great to see Simon back (the A team together again!!!!!!)
All of those timbers where handmade and then hand fitted with mortis and tennon joints.

absolutely fabulous! so great to have Simon back, speedy demolition and then all that knowledge for the new build....brilliant
So glad to see Simon back! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Another ceiling restoration in Simon and Yannis’ future. Exciting! Welcome back, Simon. Good luck, Petherick Team, and thank you for providing us with another project to entertain us and admire! Blessed 2024 to Everyone.
So happy to see Simon back. I know that he was missed by all of you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊😊😊
Yes it needs a spiral staircase!
Welcome back Simon and kudos to you Billy, for the work you've done and for having such a grand vision for the convent! It takes gigantic "bell clappers" to take on a project like this! LOL!
