    There’s a chap on UA-cam called SV Sailing Pipedream who’s got a cheap Granturismo . He’s done a temporary fix for the variatior issue by installing an oil charge reservoir that primes the engine before start up .

    • @Swankbaton
      @Swankbaton 2 місяці тому +5

      Or a remote control relay on the fuel pump fuse , you can spin the engine , build oil pressure, start it with healthy oil everywhere you need it

    • @danielfl.9347
      @danielfl.9347 28 днів тому

      Just use 0W/40 oil. Thin enough for cold starts

    • @155andRising
      @155andRising 28 днів тому +1

      @ the oil thickness is not the issue . The oil drains down from the variatiors when sat . The proper fix is to modify the oil feed with a ball valve to stop the oil from draining out the cam housing . The work around is to fit an oil charge system that primes before starting. Thinner oil will just drain away quicker

    I can't believe the cam variators haven't destroyed the engine by now. I applaud your willingness to ignore them but everyone who ever talks about them says they must be addressed. Good luck.

    Another great video and series. I have owned a 4200 coupe for 5 years and love it. I always get compliments from all sorts of people, from white van man, teenage lads, mature ladies and older gentlemen, they all love it. The Ferrari M138 engine is a great lump and capable of serious mileages. These Maseratis are seriously undervalued and provided they are maintained regularly, are very reliable. Glad you're enjoying yours, well done!

    I 'd been looking for a 986 Boxster S for a long time now but living in the middle of nowhere in Scotland anything of decent value was always a million miles away or sold way too fast . Anyway I recently picked up a 2004 S on 92k that had been stood for around 7 months and had only done 200 miles since the last mot 18 months ago . The car was around a mile from me when I saw the advert on Face book just as it came up for sale . It has masses of paper work for parts replaced, suspension all round etc..etc.., 2 keys , a decent car cover and just needs a couple of tyres and a bit of paint on a door where a buffer has gone through the paint at one time .Oh and no oil leaks or noises on start up . Its Seal Grey with a Boxster Red interior and I love it .... The price ? well it was delivered the next morning to me and I handed over my £1500 ! I 've had some bargains in my time but this car's up their for sure . I've nearly done going through it and have found nothing needed apart from a couple of tyres . It seems the unlucky seller had parted with it due to not being able to insure it anymore . I must say I "almost " feel guilty about what I paid for it . I watched your videos on your Boxster S at the time and have watched again since and they were very good and informative to say the least. Thanks Joel...

Now totally repaired, usable classic and hasn't put a wheel wrong since I purchased it. Definitely a ticking time bomb. As Maserati (4200 Manual) owner myself all I can say is you've been lucky. Anyone can buy cars and run them for a few months. Report back when you've owned it 12 months and put it through an MOT. I just got stiffed with a totally unforeseen £4750 bill to repair the entire clutch system (on a car that cost £8k). I'm not up on Quattroporte but I believe rusty subframes are also an issue as they are with the 4200.

    • @wrapdump
      @wrapdump 2 місяці тому

      Correct the subframes are poorly protected from the factory. I had to have new metal welded into mine. Best to get them protected.

      These cars are incredibly under valued because of that you get people buying them cheap thinking they'll be cheap to run. They are sports cars and all sports cars can be expensive to run repairs clutch are a consumable part that requires alot of work to replace. This is the same with Ferrari, astons, lambo 's and many other high end sports cars of this era. It's not a ticking time bomb if you understand exotic cars. In fact my Maserati has been the most reliable one.

    • @russellbird7543
      @russellbird7543 2 місяці тому

      @@sycostylie1 I was referencing more the creator that buys one cheap runs it a few months, creates enough content and sells it before they have to face any significant running costs. • @wrapdump

      @@russellbird7543 Was the clutch job because it was worn, or because of a mechanical failure? I bought mine with a part-worn clutch at 42k miles. It's at £92k miles now, same clutch giving no signs of slipping yet.

    Glad to hear you are loving the Quattroporte experience. I had always kept an eye on the 4200/GranSport market and bit the bullet around 18 months ago with a 2006 Maserati GranSport. Absolutely love the car! Has been very reliable and the music it produces is simply amazing. I honestly can’t believe how cheap these cars are for what you get. Mine has the CambioCorsa transmission rather than the ZF and it has been fantastic. It has that real mechanical feel when changing gears as you can feel the clutch engage and disengage. Overall, couldn’t be happier with the GranSport. Absolutely love it!

    A late friend had a 2005 Quattroporte. His children have now offered the car for sale, and I'm trying to screw up the courage to bid for it. The car's done barely 35000 miles, but it hasn't been driven for a while. Reliability has been a fear, but I've run an E55k for 14 years doing much of the maintenance work myself. Your experience with yours is also serving as encouragement.
    I'm not sure adding it to the AMG is entirely wise, but I do have a Hyundai Tucson to use as a daily. I guess I'll have to mull it over a tad longer.

    Oh, great question, thanks for asking 😅 I'm currently saving for a 2019 Mercedes E200 full option diesel import from Germany with about 380.000km's/237k miles for 6.7k euro's, which is insane! It's newer than my main car, a C220 from 2015 and my 'project'/fun car a 2013 E200 CDI station wagon (which I got for 4k). (The reason I'm going for the newer one) LOVE how handy the huge space in the back is. So if it's not too bad (unlike the 4k car, which turned up to have a cam chain issue, which will cost 1k to fix) I might make that my main and sell my C220.
    I want to start learning how to take cars apart and put them back together with the 2013 E class. Worse case, it's just 4k, but I'd count is an education cost.

    What your dream car changes I think dependent on what stage of your life you’re in. When I was a young lad in the 70’s it was a TR6. Much later in life it was a TVR and I did buy a Chimaera. Last week I bought a car I have coveted for a while - a 2008 Jaguar XK 150 4.2 . It’s a truly beautiful design and drives wonderfully- a “ gentleman’s express) which suits me now I am in my 60’s. Road tax is a rip off but insurance is reasonable ( it’s 3rd car in the household and is on a classic car policy with limited mileage) and on my trip home when collecting it ( about 80 miles mostly on motorway) it did 32 mpg. About 15mpg around town though. Really enjoy your videos Joel 👍.

There's so many naysayers and people who only want to believe in tired, old cliches about Italian cars when the reality is anything but. My 4200 has been rock solid since day one and that included a 1,900 mile roundtrip to Tail of the Dragon and back. I semi daily it and it's never once thrown a check engine light or given me any issues that have stopped me from driving it. Build quality is excellent, fit and finish are excellent and to your point, it imparts something very special every time you sit inside and you see and smell the hand sewn leather. Is there a better sub $30K, Ferrari engine, manual transmission car bargain that exists? I don't think so.

    Aha good vid! I’ve wanted a QP for my whole life before getting into an R35 GTR or a post 05 gallardo. The QP and the gallardo though I am most terrified to experience though, due to maintenance. I have an 09 cls63 amg Mercedes atm and it’s been about 12k CAD to maintain it 2.3 years. Mainly due to the neglected condition while buying but I dread maintaining the QP would be worst, which is why I haven’t gone for one.. ahaaa

    It should be reliable being japanese but a good example now costs 20-25K in the UK and fuel insurance tax costs dont make it an easy purchase to maintain

    Ran one for 11 years did 70k in her and can agree that they are reliable, until they get older on the electrics and rubber items which all seem to have specific faults (window regulators break, the tpms ecu gives up, certain rubber hoses in the cooling system can burst, and as you mentioned parking sensors are intermittent)

    I had a Maserati Granturismo 4.7 S for 2 years and 12000 miles, other than fuel and insurance it cost me 2 new rear tyres, it was completely reliable and I loved it.
    Mine had the MC shift gearbox which was great fun on country roads but a bit of a pain in town.

      Same. Had my GranTurismo 4.7 S for 3 years. Nothing went wrong and never broke down. Standard servicing. Completely bullet proof. Happily sold it to some chap who took it abroad. He’s still running it years later. Ok it was more expensive to service than our Porsche 911 but I knew that before we bought it. Lost £10k on it over 3 years and sold it with 18k miles on the clock after a few European drives

    Joel, I have to ask this again. Your car has had noisy cam variators since day one when you bought it, and over the last two months of driving the car frequently, you have made no effort to repair them. On cold start, has the variator noise gotten worse, or stayed the same? Does it occur with warm start ups? Do you wait until the oil pressure rises and silences the variators before you start driving? If/when they cause massive cam failure and destroy the engine, will you just sell it in that condition? Not trying to be negative, it is just that you seem to be the bravest and luckiest man I've ever heard of. John I.

    Cars like this in the UK obviously are incredibly cheap. Out here in Oz, the cheapest Quattroporte would cost you $22K for a 2004 model. A 2006 model you’re looking at around $33-46k +.
    In short you could not get one for less than $20k, regardless of condition, unless perhaps it was totally knackered.

    Just fix the issue yourself. I also did it myself. It is some work, but it is doable! You can ruin the engine by not fixing it! You have much bigger chance to get broken chain tensioners. If that happens, your engine timing will be off which can lead to a broken engine.
