That second variation of roll to back take (not the one where you make his foot touch but the log roll) with the DQ’s we saw with Tainan and Scoobys match in the Absolute semis at Worlds do you see that one becoming problematic?
Great question! I think they would have a valid argument to make it illegal, as you’re using your hip to create valgus force on the knee. Not illegal yet but who knows in the future. Very good move for no gi though!
Hi Dom! I’ve noticed in sparring that a common reaction to counter just as the waiter guard is being setup is to get down to a seated position on the opposite side to where the waiter legs are configured. The arm going in under the legs hooking the far thigh can get stuck for an awkward moment when they sit, almost like an Americana if unlucky. They are bailing on keeping balance in top position and I guess that’s a bad response kinda, however it does get awkward with the arm before you free it and reach for top position etc. what’s your experience and response to that if you feel this movement happening?
Hi! I train at AOJ where this is a common position and it is one of my best guards. You pull the arm out just in time before they sit down all the way on it and do that face down roll over back take, the second one. That’s actually exactly the situation where that move works best.
Waiter X vs Deep Waiter is an excellent variation. I never thought about different distance options with waiter. Cant wait to try 💪🏽
always appreciate your contents.
Glad to hear it!

@@DubiousDomI had to look up “valgus.” Thanks for making me smarter, Dom. 🤓
That's a cool position, but how do you enter it?
I assume from Half or Butterfly guard. You can also escape into that position I believe.

2:12 one looked like a waiter guard with a hippoplata to the legs. Very interesting.
