So far I don't own any Walthers trains, just Walthers Proto 2000 metal wheel sets. Most of my engines are Athearn, Atlas, Mantua and a couple of Tyco's and absolutely NO Bachmann. I've had to throw all the Bachmann's in the trash because of cracked gears. The most I've ever paid for an engine is $120.00. I don't do DCC, strictly a DC only guy. Getting my first brass engine soon, a Fairbanks Morse HF-12-44 made by Samhongsa in Korea. I've got a bid on another Atlas HF-15-44 for the fallen road that I model, the CofG (Central of Georgia). When I Gotten Into Model Railroading Mom and Dad got me Lifelike power loc Set then It Grew Now I Am Committed To That in Ho.When My Wife Wanted In on model Railroading I gotten her Into it as Well Now We Are Ho Then We Went Into N Scale she Went Kato and Bachmann and I went Bachman All N All We have our Hands Full and We Love It.
Its a old type of track from a another manufacturer called lifelike and got absorbed in Walther's

Power-Loc track would not be bad if the little bronze ends would not fall off.

The on/off switch on the controller would make me question its durability in long term. As far as the other opinions on the trainset, I agree with the opinions. Also, maybe Walthers needs to have the horn separate in a package while the locomotive is being shipped. This may eliminate the broken horn issue.
I have a life like power supply I use and it goes to 150 scale MPH and it’s super realabe i use ez track but I have a wire I got with one of my switch’s to power the track and had the right connections to use the power pack

THAT TRACK IS THE OLD LIFE LIKE POWER LOCK TRACK THERE USING IN THERE SETS AFTER BUYING LIFE LIKE OUT !!.
Is this a good set to start model railroading if I want to upgrade to Dcc eventually? Is there another ypud recommend?

Any other sets available from Walthers and how does it compare to Atlas and Ahearns..?
Walthers under the Trainline brand made a number of these promo sets. They don't compare well to modern Atlas and Athearn. I would compare more to the budget locomotives Bachmann puts in their train sets.
There's UA-cam channels that show you how to make a heavy duty controller from a PC power supply. $40 and should last longer than anything you can buy. I stopped buying transformers. It's a good way to learn electronics, soldering, proper extinguishing of an electrical fire and how to zap yourself across the room.
From pretty much everything I’ve seen these locomotives and just not great! The controller and powerpack seem cheap barely sufficient. The cars and caboose look nice. Honestly after seeing this video and other reviews of these sets and locomotives it shouldn’t be priced over $119! The track is a definite turn off for me. GONE-DOH-LUH
Nice set but your Locomotive has NO airhorns!
Fairly common with this locomotive, it gets knocked off during shipping.
