  • My review of the Walthers Trainline Flyer express with the famous power lok track system. Note, as it states on the box. This set is for people 14 years and older, the same is true for this video.

    Glad to see Walthers revive Life-Like's Power-Loc track for their Trainline series, now in a new and improved nickel-silver version! But I guess it's not too surprising, since Walthers now has some former Life-Like tooling acquired after the 2005 buyout, such as several Proto 1000 and 2000 locomotives and cars being part of the Walthers Proto line, and the Walthers SceneMaster line containing many older Life-Like figures and scenic accents. (Wouldn't be surprised if the Life-Like building kits are soon migrated to the Trainline series as well, to sell alongside the classic Pola building kits currently available in the line.)

    The caboose in that set is made from cox tooling and when cox got out of the model train market it transferred the tooling to Model Power and, later A.H.M. an interesting side note.

    What a very thorough review of a great beginner set!!! Wow!!! I’ve been thinking of getting a beginner set and trying to decide between Bachmann, Lionel, or Walthers in either an HO or O scale and your review here really “upped the game!” Bravo! I had seen this set offered on Train Sets Only and checked here on UA-cam to see if anyone had reviewed it. My other choices are the Blue Lightning, or Blue Silver models that use the E-Z app and have the better tracks! Your suggestion? Keep up the great reviews. We really appreciate someone with your knowledge and expertise educating us newbies! ( And I’ll be 68 in two weeks!)

      Hi Kevin!
      That's a good question. The EZ track equipped sets have a better selection of track, but, the track itself Is not as reliable as the power lok system. You will have to deal with the infamous rail joiners failing overtime causing unstable performance. Also, while the Bachmann ez app dose make running multiple trains on one track easy, the equipment itself, as you will see in my other reviews, is of poor quality, and Bachmann has been razing its prices to insane levels for this poor quality equipment. My advice, if you are looking to run multiple trains, on the same track out of the box, consider the Bachmann sets. But not the 2 you asked about. The main reason would be the high price and the lack of metal wheels and metal sprung couplers, and the fact you would be restricted to Bachmann EZ app locomotives. I would, there for, suggest the digital commander deluxe set, if you can find one. Its an older set but has metal wheels and metal sprung couplers, the trains will stay on the track and connected better. It uses a DCC system which is included, as well as 2 dcc equipped locomotives. It dose not use the app, so you are not forced to deal with Bachmann for compatible locomotives, if you decide to buy more. Yes the locomotives are not the best, but you cant beat the setup for a DCC layout. I would also recommend a track expander or maybe and older Bachmann set with EZ track, as you can run to none dcc equipped locomotive with with the 2 dcc equipped locomotives on the same layout, thanks to the ez command dcc system the set comes with. If you are looking to run just one train on the track, go with the Walters trainline Flyer. The tracks and equipment are much better for what you are paying for.

    They weren't rebuilds at all. They were whole new locos. EMD made them as an alternative to rebuilding the older geeps

    Thanks, can this kit be upgraded to DCC easily? I think the engine is not DCC ready but if one got a DCC loco and controller, could it work on this

    • @alcobufff
      @alcobufff  2 місяці тому

      Your correct, the locomotive included with this set is not dcc ready. In order to make the locomote work under dcc, you would have to hard wire the decoder to the locomotive. Not too hard if you are good with a soldering iron, but you would have to know how to solder to pull it off. Buying a DCC locomotive would be an easy way around this. You would also, as you mentioned need a DCC system. All this said, it would work.

    Weren’t they providing ez-track in their Walthers train line sets? They switched to power-loc?

    • @alcobufff
      @alcobufff  2 роки тому

      That's correct! Walthers was using Bachmann EZ track till a few years back. Walthers bought out life-like, around this time, which netted them control of the power-LOK track system which was life like developed. So it made perfect scene to change to that track system. thanks for watching and please feel free to sub if you have not all ready!

    • @alcobufff

      If they have corroded, none that i'm aware of. The metal used to make the steel track was very poor and pron to corroding after almost no time of use.
