I once read a fanfic where Valka went back with cloudjumper and stoick has to learn raising a baby hiccup as well as a "rock" which turns out to be an un hatched Toothless
About Valka, I'll over-analyze some of her lines in the movie where she said: 1. "Believe me, I tried, as well. But people are not capable of change, Hiccup." 2. "Stop! You’ll only make it worse!" 3. "You and your father nearly died that night, all because I couldn’t kill a dragon." 4. "I pleaded so many times to stop the fighting, to find another answer" 5. "I know that I left you to raise Hiccup alone... but I thought he’d be better off without me." I imagine she genuinely believed her presence alone could make things worse for everyone, no matter what she did. If she tried to convince the tribe of her ideas, I imagine vikings probably almost got killed if she tried an experiment to make peace with a dragon instead of fighting it; Think of Hiccup and Hookfang in the arena, Stoick immediately wanted him to stop and his reaction was a bit extreme, like it wasn't the first time he saw it happen. It must've happened with Valka and her attempt at befriending a dragon didn't go well and people got hurt. Even if she did absolutely nothing, like not fighting a dragon, someone would still get hurt. Even though it was Stoick's fault in the flashback for provoking Cloudjumper, Valka still believed it was somehow HER fault that they almost got killed, indicating it wasn't the first time someone was in danger because she did nothing and was blamed for it, despite the dragon being chill until Stoick arrived. So she thought it would be better for everyone, even her son, if she stayed away. Not even secretly visit to check on them, in case her presence somehow brought trouble. So all those years she distracted herself with the dragons, helping them and learning everything about them, convincing herself her family were better off without her. And even if at some point she changed her mind and wanted to visit Berk, she probably thought it was too late. While this doesn't justify abandoning her husband and son, it shows more about her thought process. It's still wrong what she did, but if Dreamworks showed us more flashbacks about her thought process and the events that influenced her future decisions, we would've at least understood her perspective, because yeah all we see right now is a "shitty mom" lol but that's not fair for her character. She comes across as a pretty sensitive individual to me, I do believe a lot of things happened for her to decide to stay dead in the eyes of her family and tribe, because that's not a simple decision to make. Valka needs her own tv show about the 20 years she lived right after Cloudjumper took her.
Your analyses is spot on, you missed the part where Valka apologizes but overall you hit the mark. The movie portrais her decision as a mistake and people keep missing that because they don't "over-analyse" and let their bias get in the way like Audrie. I'd argue you did a great job to prove the point that Valka had her reasons justified (to some exten)t on top of her agreeing in the movie she made a mistake and regretted it imidietly when proven wrong. Keep analysing things this way mate.
@@DeltaLeoYT two sides of the same coin i guess some people prefer to create their own version to help themselves others over-analyse to understand more of the story without going away ,same happens with harry potter the more you over-analyse the more you like it
@@dukcboy912 thats the thing, i won't call it "over-analyze" it's just paying attention to the movie /analyzing it. Over-analyze implies that you're going to an extreme (like the conspirecy guy meme)
As someone who has both read and sometimes write fan fiction for pleasure, the amount of stories I have come across in any fandom I have been in has always blown me away. Some of these plots have so much depth and importance that I dare say is sometimes better than a professional author!
I remember feeling emotional about some I read! There's this fanfic/au de rottmnt that still breaks me to this day (I'm not going to say anything other than one thing, "green")!
@@michaelbecket4901 I think it gets a bad reputation because the image that some people have is just smut. but it's much more than that! If you know how to look for the right thing, you will find great stories that will either make you laugh or make you cry.
As someone who reads (and writes (but let's not talk about that rn)) fanfiction regularly (and has been doing so since I was around 11), I'm telling y'all now, some of the greatest and most emotional fanfiction I've ever read over the years have been from HTTYD. Especially the ones where Hiccup and Toothless actually run away. Those were my absolute favourite. And, I just have to say this, RIP HarryPanther who really made my fanfiction experience the absolute best. They really were an amazing writer. (Sidenote, HTTYD was actually the fandom which got me into fanfiction.)
@@kisui101 off the top of my head I would defo recommend HarryPanther. They made quite a variety of stories in different genres so whatever is your taste you will probably find. One of my favourite ones from them is The Blacksmith's Apprentice. I remember it being quite angsty and it was basically about what would have happened if Toothless never got shot down when he did- like in that one rtte episode. Other than that I haven't actually read httyd fics in a while (I go through fanfic phases of specific fandoms and currently I'm not in my httyd phase and I am in way too many fandoms to count) so yeah, HarryPanther is always a good place to start.
@@kisui101 I’m late, but I thought Deviation and What Lies Beneath by OrangeCat64 were good. TW: Both fics, especially the first one, touch on some sensitive topics about mental health.
For me my favorite HTTYD fanfics are "A Thing of Vikings" which is a really fun take the universe by putting into real life history of the era that the series takes place in, and "Persephone" which is...the classic Hiccup leaves when he's told to kill the Monstrous Knightmare but it's genuinely very well written.
I tried giving that fic a shot but the characters don't seem like the originals, at all. It felt like I was just reading a book with made up characters and not fanfiction. Still a great story! And the writing is immaculate, just wish the author wrote hiccup and the others more like themselves. It also has to do with I hate romance and it's very romance heavy. Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to share my thoughts with someone who has read it as well. :)
@@honey_Bee1333 the chapters are more based off their book counterparts so they definitely feel different. The only character that I genuinely didn't like was Astrid and that was mostly because of how centred around Hiccup she was. I'm actually a romance reader, but I don't really think the romance was done well tbh. And I know polyamory was normal back then, but giving Hiccup a "harem" just didn't sit right with me.
Been writing fanfiction in many fandoms for years, including HTTYD and I thank you for addressing the topic in such a positive, admirable way :) Good luck with your future writing, wishing you the best 😃👍 Also my now like 5-year old HTTYD fanfiction was all Snotlout-centric btw, if anyone cares 👀🤭
I'm an avid fanfic reader and sporadic writer and... this is one helluva mood of a fic. Also, I fell hard back into the HTTYD Whispering Death hole due to stumbling on a fanfic named "A thing of Vikings" And also... I'm admittedly a Self-Insert writer, but that's more so for making an easier MC, and liking Isekai bits.
Jesus, this reminds me I’ve gotta resume work on my own HTTYD “reboot”. All the reviews I got so far from people who gave it a shot have been positive, but it’s also been paused for about three months without progress.
I will admit, I had a pretty negative view of fanfiction for a long time. I thought those authors were crazy bedroom-dwellers who wrote crappy stories about Disney characters doing explicit intercourse in exhaustive detail. But, lately the franchises I've loved for decades have gone to shit thanks to the very studios they've come from, and I've read better-quality writing from everyday fans. I myself have done a small amount of fanfiction since coming to this revelation, and I have a newfound respect for people who see what they love and have a desire to make it better whether they're paid to do it or not. Also, THANK YOU for pointing out Valka's failings as a mother. Her characterization in HTTYD 2 never sat well with me and it's my major complaint about the quality of that movie. And it was never ever addressed by later writing teams. She basically got kidnapped by dragons and made the conscious decision that she was going to let her husband and son grow old and die without her.
I never thought I would EVER write stories, mostly because I considered (and still consider) myself not creative enough but here I am, working on my second HTTYD-Fanfiction with the first one having over 45k Words and the other one probably having even more (not released anywhere although my friends try to encourage me to do so at some point), I surprise myself on how much I can actually write and it truely helps that this Franchise is so important to me, its actually the only thing that still brings real, lasting Joy into my life (oversharing again, sorry) and it motivates so much And yes, having a prebuild structure really helps a lot in getting into writing, I can use something that already exists and dont have to imagine new names and places as much, which I struggle with as I noticed
you raised so many great points, and others have explained that better than I could in their own comments :) I've only started really reading HTTYD fan fiction a couple a months ago, and I was pretty blown away by how good (and not good) some of them were. To viewers, I've seen a lot of recs in the comment section of Audrie's Hiccstrid video (also great) and a couple here, so I made a list of ones I've read already to those who are new. I'm not a personal fan of all of them, but I won't say which since I think everyone should make/share their own opinions. If anyone has any of their own recs, AU's you're fans of, or your own work, feel free to add it! Be warned, some of them get...interesting. Fanfiction has always been a bit of a fascinating enigma to me just because of the wide range of awful and cringe, to the absolutely beautiful and in depth fanfiction, and everything in between. I've never understood people who actively look down on and scorn all fanfiction because of the few that aren't very well written. Fanfiction is a great way to consume what you love in ways outside of what's canon or even stretches what is canon to make things more interesting or makes it make more sense
Reminds me of that one time middle school me wrote a httyd fanfiction about Hiccup being blind and basically becoming half dragon by meeting toothless early and becoming a gigantic chad before leaving Berk, starting a letter based friendship with astrid and absolutely destroying all of his enemies- xD
i like fanfiction special since it can show what never happend on screen like hiccup asking astrid parents for her hands during race to the edge or what if fanfiction like if hiccup was raised by dragons and could talk with them even a crossover with rescue riders
Fanfic is such a wonderful tool for increasing writing skill! I look back at my old fics from middle school and it truly amazes me how quickly I improved with each fic I published
I'm surprised you didn't name drop any of your favorite httyd stories to encourage people to explore fan fic. Or are they all not pg enough for youtube to talk about? ',:) my all time favorite httyd fan fic ive ever read is actually a series called "nightfall" in which hiccup was kidnapped WITH valka by cloudjumper, and then he grows up in the dragon sanctuary, half feral and believing he himself is also a dragon. The writing style is absolutely phenomenal, and I wish to write so poetically one day.
NIGHTFALL!! one of the best pieces of literature I’ve ever read. I legitimately think it deserves to be known as a “popular” HTTYD fanfic. I’ve recently gone back to skim through the author’s three stories, and man do they hold up really well.
exactly!! love this video, fanfiction can be so much better than cannon-- shows like miraculous ladybug which could be so much better but failed to reach that potential get there by fan reboots or fanfiction (just for an example) I'm probably gonna read this
I came up with this for Gargoyles/HTTYD: Brooklyn gets sucked into a Dragon book Xanatos has which sends him to Berk as a human, befriending Hiccup and even taming his own dragon, a Skrill he names Voltwing along the way. Takes place during all three movies and the tv shows.
The amount of time I’ve spent reading HTTYD fanfiction is probably longer than the first two movies, Riders and Defenders, and a few seasons of Race combined. I regret none of it, and that’s counting the ones that I should regret.
One of my favorite fanfics today on the HTTYD fandom, is literally stoick and the rest of berk watching the first movie and the series. And that happens because hiccup never told them about toothless or the red death. He did ALL of that on the low, and no one knew about It until years later.
YES me and my friend watched the video together and we always randomly turn to each other and one of us will say ASTRID and then both of us will finish with the I'M GAY lol It is now a vital inside joke
There are soooo many great fanfics out there, I am currently reading one that has me on a chokehold and it is of my favorite ship, which is great because it's extremely rare to find good fanfic of it.
Audrie, what a wonderful review, and of course I'm glad so many of your subscribers love fic too. Writing is writing is writing and we've *always* told one another stories using the stories that came before. Thank you so much! - Atlin
I love fan fiction! And completely agree with Audrey here because fan fictions can be absolutely amazing! Audrey has already said everything that I too feel about fan fictions so I won’t reiterate but yeah if you’ve seen my hero academia which while a great story has some… questionable legality of multiple things, it’s what has gotten me so obsessed with fan fictions because people being left on rooftops after dreams being crushed, chaining someone up on national television, training defacto child soldiers (then having them fight in literal war), etc is something I love to see fan fictions obliterate and watching those things play such a cool impact on the story while in canon they just get swept under the rug is so mentally satisfying.
Fanfiction is frequently shockingly better than it's source material. Obviously there’s plenty of variation in quality, far more than in professional works, but i adore seeing how impressive many fanfiction authors are.
One HTTYD fanfiction I love is called "Fractured Family." I won't spoil the whole thing, but the basic plot is Hiccup and Astrid adopt an orphaned little girl, and the 3 of them learn how to be family. Really heartwarming with a little action and drama thrown in for little kicks here and there. 9/10 would recommend
Fanfiction and doing your own thing is such a genuinely fun and healthy thing to do that NEEDS to be more normalized in general story telling spaces. You have no idea how many times I have seen people get into huge arguments on Twitter about something they head cannon, getting overly attached to the concept and thus, try to say it is actually cannon with no proof, which leads to an insane culture war and in-fighting amongst that fandom. It would be infinitely more fun and healthy for these people to just write their own fanfiction or even make their own story/universe that goes bonkers based off of concepts they developed while still respecting where you got your inspiration from.
I still quote a HTTYD fanfic line a lot. I don't remember what the fanfic was called, but it had to do with the gang retelling the story of the Dragon Furious and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II (from the books), and Astrid had to act as the Dragon Furious. She HATED it and was griping the whole time. And Hiccup (who was playing his namesake, and who had since been slain in the story) couldn't stop himself from giggling. Snotlout elbowed him and told him, "Dead people don't laugh, Hiccup." I WAS DECEASED- That line was so funny! I wish I could link the fanfic.
When I first learned about the existense of fanfiction, httyd fics were the first I read. I've since explored different fandoms, and I've even started writing my own fics, and I'll never forget how it all started
This is a super good video! As a fanfic writer (I still die inside every time I admit that tbh) it's really nice to see such an honest take from someone who's actually involved with fandom, instead of just another outsider pointing in and going "ew cringe!!!". Fanfic has absolutely given me an outlet not only for writing what I desire to see from characters and worlds I like, but also encouraged me to keep improving my skills as an author in general. Fanfic is usually far more achievable to plan, start, finish, and post, unlike fully original works that can take months, if not years, to make anything finished for. My writing has gotten vastly better in a very short amount of time through writing fan works because of this. Also, it's nice to see people expressing love for things I've made, and encourages me to keep trying and making other things in the future! Confidence is the fuel that keeps me going and quells the anxiety of "what if this is trash?!" because clearly people enjoy what I've made. Thank you for making this video!
I wholeheartedly agree. I've been a writer since I was 17. My first project was - I kid you not - a High School Musical fan-fiction. That movie just ignited my creativity because that's what it's largely about. I wrote some Harry Potter, some Kingdom Hearts... it was a fantastic way to start out. And then I moved on to original work. I did that for ten years and even though I love my originsl stories, at some point I noticed that I lost my drive. Now I've reignited it by going back to fan-fictions. These past months I wrote some of the best stuff I've ever written. I always respected fan-fiction but I still saw it as amateur-level that I should grow out of eventually, but that was wrong. I'm writing two stories right now that are both deeply meaningful to me. One is, again, a High School Musical story that I had in my mind since 2006 when I first got into writing. So I'm going full circle right now and it doesn't feel at all like I'm going backwards, more like I'm rediscovering what made me love to write and it already helps me with my original work. I'm even playing with the idea of turning my ff's into audio-plays for youtube. I don't know if there is an audience for that, but it feels like a good way to maybe build one and then introduce my original work to them and become a professional writer that way. I dunno. But I'd love to try. And that already makes me feel much more inspired than just feverishly trying to finish my original work.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the character of Valka, and how fanfic helped you explore those experiences. I've been writing fanfic since I was a teen, and in the last decade I've written in simultaneously with a pro writing career. They both bring me joy, and I get to play with form and ideas in fanfic all the time! :) I have an essay in the book but I found inspiration myself in so many of the stories shared there, about working through dry periods and how to grow as a writer. And now I want to go watch all the How to Tame Your Dragon films again...
When will you review the eighth and final season (crying rn cause there will be no more reviews after that) of the Nine Realms?? I miss your reviews so much lmaooo. 😭
I used to have this story of what if Superman ended up in a LOTR or Elder Scrolls type world, which became the foundation for an original world building project that I'm still working on There was a HTTYD story too, taking place in 1914, or the dawn of human aviation and aviation warfare that I had the idea for, but the other world has my focus atm World building became an addiction for me...
Honestly, one idea I have had recently would integrate the MonasterVerse and the HTTYD films. With the Hidden World being a pocket of the Hollow Earth.
Yea discovered fanfiction around 7th grade, started with MLP stuff, then found an authors other stuff and broadened horizons. The genre of fanfiction i enjoy most now is lore building/expanding though well the size of works the authors i enjoy make, is many times around size of LotR or several times that, so well time consuming. And yea can agree amount i read during school was mostly fanfiction, literature was occasioanl chapters or poems, and one book analysis a semester.
Man.. I need to take notes! Don’t mind me, totally not a fanfiction writer with an interest in recreating the HTTYD series- But lovely little vid, will get that book at some point, and get my writing out there eventually!
Funnily enough, fan fiction is what lead to me becoming an author myself, more specifically, DBZ and HTTYD fanfics that I wrote during 2016 to 2019, fan fiction made me into a published author.
@@diddles3383 Ahaha! Why hi to you as well - oh yeah that was a long time ago, and what a time in my life that was, I really enjoy thinking back on when editing animated movies to music was the thing to do :)
As someone whose worked on (and is currently in a writer block with) a httyd inspired story, I can admit that fan fictions truly are a good way to not just express one’s creativity but to Spark that of others. (See what I did there?:p) As with my story, I’ve learned thru the years of developing it that not only can one take a story and use it as inspiration for your own, but even the lessons, the struggles and the lives we individually live can result in a great story in itself. As I have been told, writers write what they know. And what they know can be something special.
Interesting to hear about the Valka story issues just being swept aside. I've always felt there are great ideas behind the character, but it just doesn't work in practice. Not the way it was done in the movie, anyway.
Honestly it would depend. Truthfully, I find the ones that are balanced a little more established you name it but I make sure it’s something in relation to the original with a little extra kick and dazzle
I feel like they could have probably re-written the story to make it so Vaulka couldn't return until movie 2. Maybe she was so far away she was completely lost in new lands and was unable to find her way back. Maybe she'd lost her memory for most of the time she'd been lost. Perhaps she'd become disabled in some way that prevented her from riding dragons at all or for long periods of time. (Not that that should prevent hiccup from being angry at her, but it may prevent her looking like a total asshole in confrontations about it.) Alternativly, the people writing the movie could have just said "maybe its okay for characters to be shades of grey, and not just be objectivly good or evil, and maybe its not the end of the world if we admit that maybe hiccups mum is an asshole and maybe hiccup isn't ready or doesn't want to accept her back. But at the end of the day Idk. I'm just an idiot that can't even remember most of the how to train your dragon franchise. I'm just here cause I like your content.
This is a video I need a lot now, because I also want to be a writer and decided a good way to practice it was writing fanfics. I write a lot of historical fiction and alt history, and while I have my own characters I guess my stuff could be considered RPF of historical people, and like you said if people have a problem with it, then they have an issue with a lot of historical literature. I’m actually doing a story inspired by HTTYD and your criticism of the Nine Realms (hear me out), where humanity discovers a secret underground world of dragons several years before the outbreak of World War One (nerdy as hell, I know). Which goes into how dragons impact the tech of the time but it mainly focuses on a select group of riders, which includes some real life people. I honestly can’t wait to write it down and I’m so psyched about the idea, and I’ll keep following your HTTYD videos 👍
8:30 that’s pretty much how your average Transformers Stop Motion series works here in UA-cam. The 40 year sand box of lore and characters makes for great fan made pieces of media better than anything made officially by Hasbro.
Just came across this channel because I was debating about by the DreamWorks kart racer game again and that video was hilarious. It's on sale now for $9 if rather pay that then the 30 I once did. I subbed and came to check out more content and holy shit it's a ghost town! Are you ok? You channel can definitely grow if you keep it up. And post more than just DreamWorks stuff. Usually when this happens the person is dead or pregnant and hoding it. Hopefully all is well🤷🏾♂️
Valka kould have a explanation if before she hade a chanse to get back to Berk, she was alreddy at war with drago and the hunters and world putt Hiccup in more danser. Det fortet she aldedy almost cast him to die once.
Thought the outro music was an arrangement of a HTTYD score and spent a minute trying to place it before realizing it was Willow. (Also btw Willow bark doesn't really have healing properties regardless of what Gothi says though it was widedly believed)
I read A Gift of Wings a couple years ago now, honestly probably my second favorite book/story/fanfiction or whatever, first favorite being another fanfic of httyd but its a lot more mature so i wont bring it up
no. Especially the fanfictions you showcased are nowhere near close to the official canon HOWEVER, especially as someone who sees the 2nd and 3rd films as not really that good, I've imagined the blatantly obvious changes that could make the 2nd and 3rd films closer to the quality of the original, cuz the original is the closest to a perfect original film that Dreamworks has ever gotten. to list off a couple of the changes i would make, - make Hiccup's fellow dragon riders NOT stupid, including Astrid. - make Grimmel a villain that can actually be taken seriously - integrate more of the lore from the TV shows into the films proper - give the Snaptrapper an appearance or two - give Hiccup more fucking appreciation for his status and accomplishments
@@GojiraFan-in9oo yh well it has been insinuated that what is canon in the shows does not affect the canon of the movies. I mean so much of the third movie doesn't make sense if you actually consider both the show and the movies canon together. I.e. what would happen to Mala and the defenders if the Eruptadon just up and left. They would have to relocate since their whole island would be molten rock, lava and ash. I tend to see the movies and shows as kind of parallel worlds to each other. Some of the things that happened in the show happened in the same timeline in the movies whereas other things just don't make enough sense with what the movies showed. If the movies, especially movie three since it was made after race to the edge, was a genuine continuation of the shows, with all of the lore and detail put into them, I believe that they would have found a way other than hiding the dragons, a better way to deal with Grimmel. Personally, I prefer all the lore in the shows and, although I love the movies, the way they just disregarded a lot of the information the shows gave us has just always irked me (And that is why the forst movie remains my favouriteout of the three). So I always say I see the details of the show as more canon than some of the details in the movies. Because, well... the shows are just better.
How to change your name Is by fart My favorite Series Especially how to train your dragons 2That by far was the best Besides the 1st 1 the 3rd 1And race to the And race to the edge the showedge
I once read a fanfic where Valka went back with cloudjumper and stoick has to learn raising a baby hiccup as well as a "rock" which turns out to be an un hatched Toothless
That’s actually genius
omg plss link?? or title? it sounds so wholesome i wanna read it QAQ
omg whats it called?? i wanna read it now!
don’t leave us hanging
drop the name
that sounds so cool and adorable! Imagine Hiccup and Toothless growing up together, it would be so cute!!
About Valka, I'll over-analyze some of her lines in the movie where she said:
1. "Believe me, I tried, as well. But people are not capable of change, Hiccup."
2. "Stop! You’ll only make it worse!"
3. "You and your father nearly died that night, all because I couldn’t kill a dragon."
4. "I pleaded so many times to stop the fighting, to find another answer"
5. "I know that I left you to raise Hiccup alone... but I thought he’d be better off without me."
I imagine she genuinely believed her presence alone could make things worse for everyone, no matter what she did.
She hasn't replied at least yet meaning she didn't buy it
Your analyses is spot on, you missed the part where Valka apologizes but overall you hit the mark.
@@Kelesli_Kopke doesn't matter if she buys it or not, Audrie is being bias while this comment proves her wrong

Waiting for Audries reaction to the new HTTYD Trailer

Honestly, my favourite part of that fic was Snotlout’s development. When he and Hiccup met up again after they both developed, it was AMAZING
I tried giving that fic a shot but the
characters don't seem like the originals, at all.
Persephone was so good, I stayed up all night reading it
Soooooo..... Does this mean we're reading smut on here after all? 😮

Tbh I wish they just made Valka the villian so she wouldn't just be a bad mom, I heard that was the orignal idea for who the villian was gonna be
She would've been better than Drago.
She was literally acting weird enough to be revealed as the main villain in the middle of the film.
That would be sick tbh
You know for a while she posted once a month. It's been 4 months. Audrey I want my new video!
Been writing fanfiction in many fandoms for years, including HTTYD and I thank you for addressing the topic in such a positive, admirable way :) Good luck with your future writing, wishing you the best 😃👍
Also my now like 5-year old HTTYD fanfiction was all Snotlout-centric btw, if anyone cares 👀🤭
I'm an avid fanfic reader and sporadic writer and... this is one helluva mood of a fic.
Also, I fell hard back into the HTTYD Whispering Death hole due to stumbling on a fanfic named "A thing of Vikings"
And also... I'm admittedly a Self-Insert writer, but that's more so for making an easier MC, and liking Isekai bits.
They have released the live action httyd movie trailer today, November 19th 2024, about 6 hours ago at 11 am I believe on Universal's channel.
Audrie i hope youre doing ok its been a while we heard from you! ❤❤❤
Miss it has been 4 months please upload 😢
I never thought I would EVER write stories, mostly because I considered (and still consider) myself not creative enough but here I am, working on my second HTTYD-Fanfiction with the first one having over 45k Words and the other one probably having even more (not released anywhere although my friends try to encourage me to do so at some point), I surprise myself on how much I can actually write and it truely helps that this Franchise is so important to me, its actually the only thing that still brings real, lasting Joy into my life (oversharing again, sorry) and it motivates so much
And yes, having a prebuild structure really helps a lot in getting into writing, I can use something that already exists and dont have to imagine new names and places as much, which I struggle with as I noticed
Oh damn you disappeared, you going to talk about the new live action trailer?
you raised so many great points, and others have explained that better than I could in their own comments :) I've only started really reading HTTYD fan fiction a couple a months ago, and I was pretty blown away by how good (and not good) some of them were.

Tl;dr: Yes, she thinks fanfiction CAN be better than canon. 9:45
One of my favourite HTTYD au is the Two Hiccup AU. It connects the books and the movies nicely
RESCUE RIDERS MENTIONED
The writing style is absolutely phenomenal, and I wish to write so poetically one day.
i wrote up a long list of fanfics I've read in a comment, you can add/check out any stories you find interesting
NIGHTFALL!! one of the best pieces of literature I’ve ever read. I legitimately think it deserves to be known as a “popular” HTTYD fanfic. I’ve recently gone back to skim through the author’s three stories, and man do they hold up really well.
exactly!! love this video, fanfiction can be so much better than cannon-- shows like miraculous ladybug which could be so much better but failed to reach that potential get there by fan reboots or fanfiction (just for an example)
I'm probably gonna read this
I came up with this for Gargoyles/HTTYD:
Brooklyn gets sucked into a Dragon book Xanatos has which sends him to Berk as a human, befriending Hiccup and even taming his own dragon, a Skrill he names Voltwing along the way.
"Do you remember-" Yes.
"Astrid -- I'm gay!" will forever live rent-free in my head 😂
YES me and my friend watched the video together and we always randomly turn to each other and one of us will say ASTRID and then both of us will finish with the I'M GAY lol

That's basically every fic that tries to justify valka without changing much of a story
I love fan fiction! And completely agree with Audrey here because fan fictions can be absolutely amazing! Audrey has already said everything that I too feel about fan fictions so I won’t reiterate but yeah if you’ve seen my hero academia which while a great story has some… questionable legality of multiple things, it’s what has gotten me so obsessed with fan fictions because people being left on rooftops after dreams being crushed, chaining someone up on national television, training defacto child soldiers (then having them fight in literal war), etc is something I love to see fan fictions obliterate and watching those things play such a cool impact on the story while in canon they just get swept under the rug is so mentally satisfying.
there is a httyd analog horror inspired by the man in the suit called "the night fury incident."
I’m sorry HUH????? THAT SOUNDS SO COOL!!!!!
3:29 this also
Applies to the BBC Merlin fandom
Fanfiction and doing your own thing is such a genuinely fun and healthy thing to do that NEEDS to be more normalized in general story telling spaces. You have no idea how many times I have seen people get into huge arguments on Twitter about something they head cannon, getting overly attached to the concept and thus, try to say it is actually cannon with no proof, which leads to an insane culture war and in-fighting amongst that fandom.
It would be infinitely more fun and healthy for these people to just write their own fanfiction or even make their own story/universe that goes bonkers based off of concepts they developed while still respecting where you got your inspiration from.
as an amateur writer too (and a fanfic writer and reader), yeah, fanfics are sometimes even better than the original, just ask the Miraculous fandom!
Fanfic is especially great for fandoms where you run out of content quickly :)
Just be careful people READ YOUR TAGS
I still quote a HTTYD fanfic line a lot. I don't remember what the fanfic was called, but it had to do with the gang retelling the story of the Dragon Furious and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II (from the books), and Astrid had to act as the Dragon Furious. She HATED it and was griping the whole time. And Hiccup (who was playing his namesake, and who had since been slain in the story) couldn't stop himself from giggling. Snotlout elbowed him and told him, "Dead people don't laugh, Hiccup."
I WAS DECEASED-
That line was so funny! I wish I could link the fanfic.
When I first learned about the existense of fanfiction, httyd fics were the first I read. I've since explored different fandoms, and I've even started writing my own fics, and I'll never forget how it all started
If you like the Norse and Vikings so much you must know who the Varangian Guards were
Lol, literally just finished an outline for a How to Train your Dragon fanfic!
This book, Spark, looks interesting. I may check it out.
0:16 YESSSSS WW NEED MORE VOICEOVERS OR WHATEVER ITS CALLES

I used to have this story of what if Superman ended up in a LOTR or Elder Scrolls type world, which became the foundation for an original world building project that I'm still working on
There was a HTTYD story too, taking place in 1914, or the dawn of human aviation and aviation warfare that I had the idea for, but the other world has my focus atm
World building became an addiction for me...

As someone whose worked on (and is currently in a writer block with) a httyd inspired story, I can admit that fan fictions truly are a good way to not just express one’s creativity but to Spark that of others. (See what I did there?:p)
As with my story, I’ve learned thru the years of developing it that not only can one take a story and use it as inspiration for your own, but even the lessons, the struggles and the lives we individually live can result in a great story in itself.
As I have been told, writers write what they know. And what they know can be something special.
As soon as you said my immortal i got ligit war flashbacks lol chills of horror
Oh boy this is gonna be fun (grabs bottle of whiskey)
Interesting to hear about the Valka story issues just being swept aside. I've always felt there are great ideas behind the character, but it just doesn't work in practice. Not the way it was done in the movie, anyway.
I’m currently working on a fanfic for httyd where it’s the main story (movies and tv shows) but from Toothless’ POV! But obviously more expansive
Then you should seriously consider a career change!

I read A Gift of Wings a couple years ago now, honestly probably my second favorite book/story/fanfiction or whatever, first favorite being another fanfic of httyd but its a lot more mature so i wont bring it up
no. Especially the fanfictions you showcased are nowhere near close to the official canon
HOWEVER, especially as someone who sees the 2nd and 3rd films as not really that good, I've imagined the blatantly obvious changes that could make the 2nd and 3rd films closer to the quality of the original, cuz the original is the closest to a perfect original film that Dreamworks has ever gotten.
to list off a couple of the changes i would make,
- make Hiccup's fellow dragon riders NOT stupid, including Astrid.
- make Grimmel a villain that can actually be taken seriously
- integrate more of the lore from the TV shows into the films proper
- give the Snaptrapper an appearance or two
- give Hiccup more fucking appreciation for his status and accomplishments
The TV shows are honestly more canon in my opinion.
@@persialionheart that's not how it works. the TV shows fill the gaps that the films create. it's not 2 timelines.
Why you speaken with such authroity
@@GojiraFan-in9ooNot exactly, because the TV shows aren't required to watch the movies. They're basically separate canons
This video is beautiful! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! You've definitly widened my horizon🔥
Btw, is that a Forth Wing poster?
If its not, it looks exactly like (something)from the book
How to change your name Is by fart My favorite Series Especially how to train your dragons 2That by far was the best Besides the 1st 1 the 3rd 1And race to the And race to the edge the showedge
I'm mostly in the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson fandoms, but I've dabbled in HTTYD fanfics. There are some very good ones.
