This is insane and im so glad this showed up in my recommended. I played a lot of Spelunky (900 hours) and have had such an issue with the difficulty of Spelunky 2. You make it look so easy. Well done.

ghost patterns for anyone wondering: sad (quad) ghost: is the fastest ghost of the four, directly tries to kill you, but has a hard time turning around happy ghost (duo) + o-face ghost (quad): don’t directly try to kill you, but when it reaches you it will orbit you. happy (quad) ghost: literally doesn’t care that much, don’t worry about this one. this one is apparently a troll but will orbit you if it reaches you. angry (quad) ghost: is big solo ghost, and (duo) sad ghost

With Spelunky 2, Derek Yu intended to make ghosting impossible, and make score-running faster-paced and more fun. It turns out he only made it more annoying than before.
Should have put a hard cap on time per level instead. That would have made aggressive play around ghosts the optimal way to score since you'd need to make the most out of it before being forced to bail.
Weird take - why do you think he intended to make ghosting impossible? If that was the case the mechanic could've just been removed entirely. He's said in an interview, even, that part of the inspiration for the cursed pot was to give runners a way to summon the ghost sooner rather than waiting for the timer to run out. The orbiting ghost (happy after the first split, pog after the second split), in my experience makes ghosting gems in corners much more viable than it was in HD, even. Ghosting in this game is definitely more exciting than it was in HD, though much more difficult.

While your play around the ghosts during this run is exceptional, watching this just makes me feel like any type of ghosting for score is just way too difficult for even above average players. The four ghosts are tough enough when you can blast open the whole level but if you want to ghost at all without infinite bombs it's basically a death sentence. I feel like the first ghost split is the right level of difficult and accessible and kinda wish it stopped there.

@@CalamitasCalliope Yeah that's Derek's sentiment as well, he also thinks that spawning the drill above shops, alters and lava is part of the intended experience and should stay. I bomb through when I can if needed but sometimes you just can't. I think there are some things he should make more accessible. Not sure if the ghost should be one of them, but I think his vision for things sometimes affects him poorly.
I agree. The first split makes sense. Second split is entirely unnecessary. I think the 4 ghosts split would be an interesting progression for destroying altars. Help balance out the whole infinite bombs thing. But for ordinary runs it goes a step further from being an I creased challenge and making it essentially impossible which is stupid and goes against the design of the game overall.

If the ghost splits twice in a level you almost certainly are doing some shenanigans in the level and should be prepared for it. If the drill spawns in a nasty place there's literally nothing you could have done about it. Maybe the ghost split interval could be doubled so it splits into 2 after a minute and 4 a minute after that (or even 2 after 30 seconds and then 4 after a minute), but I think the concept of the ghost splitting multiple times is not fundamentally flawed.
I can remember two questions I had from watching the pre-CO run, hopefully someone can answer: 1. why did twiggle need to be cursed in the temple (4-1 or 4-2)? I thought the city of gold entry was only conditional on picking up the item that anubis drops (+ hejdet). 2. what happens if you destroy another altar after getting true crown? he seemed concerned about that in 7-2. had other questions along the way but I can't recall now. what a mesmerizing run with the inclusion of true crown.
if you want the true crown, you need to be cursed after seeing Beg once at an altar after he gave you a bomb bag. thats why twiggle needed to be cursed in order for the true crown.
also, destroying a 3rd altar is very dangerous after having no kali favor. it gives you ball and chain it summons ghost on that level (and probably keeps chasing you for the next levels until ball is broken somehow) it makes every next level dark that’s all i know about it, there’s a full kali altar guide somewhere, so i recommend you search it up.

As they are doing a score run, they want to get as much money as possible. Destroying blocks in the City of Gold spawns multiple gold nuggets, and will increase the score exponentially if enough blocks are destroyed. The timer is to alert him of the True Crown. The True Crown teleports you 4-8 blocks in the direction you are facing every 22 seconds, and gives you 22 bombs after every teleport. The timer goes off to remind him of the teleports, so he can influence them to not kill him.
Statistically, if you had a run like this where you made it all the way to 7-99 even with the ice caves skips and non-optimal levels, 9 million is a total reasonable expectation.
Btw, ive exited olmec with around 90k before by grabbing a mattock and a jetpack in the dwelling. Getting all ghost jars and idols available. But doing zero ghosting and refraining from touching vaults. Not saying this like “oh look at me im so good”. I just love watching these amazing score runs by twiggle and comparing scores at certain points. Also thats with me obtaining all gold in 1-1 as opposed to speedrunning it to get to a 1-2 shop like twiggle does. I dont speedrun 1-1 levels cause im just playing the game normally. But yeah, ive left olmec before with around 90k before. And thats after buying out the useful items in the black market of course. These runs are so entertaining! I love it
I would recommend ghosting, especially in earlier levels or on vaults (ESPECIALLY Tusk's vault)! If you can, gather all your chests/pots to one end of the stage, along with the Ghost Pot. Break them all open, hopefully there are plenty of gems, and ghost them all. That nets you an easy $5,000 at least (because of the Ghost Pot), but I've exited 1-1 with upwards of $50,000 before! It's scary to ghost, but the first form, the single one, is easy enough to handle. Twiggle has been doing this for quite a while now, plus he has the wide open space to make it a bit easier to kite them! My record for score is around $800,000 as of now, minimal ghosting and having killed shopkeepers. It's all just a matter of getting comfortable with scary stuff!
I play with a controller, and for that specific skip you need to be boosting while throwing a rope up. This is hard to do all with your right thumb, so I change my rope button to L1 just for that skip (since I like it on triangle most of the time, I change it back). Also, with the Steam controller settings it looks like I change it to circle but ignore that, it's really L1
I wonder what would happen if you had 2 or even 4 people reach 7-99. Would there be multiple constellations? Or would all the players become one constellation?
of course it is possible... no reason it shouldn't be. Will someone every attempt it is the question. I feel like if you are as good as twiggle, you should be able to? Once you get to cosmic ocean I wonder how difficult it is, as long as you aren't blowing everything up it should be ok. (not for me but for a good player)

The little jester hat that is on his health icon is the true crown. It teleports you on 20ish second timer and gives you bombs every teleport.
