In this video I'll show you the EASIEST approach and process for practicing portrait painting in watercolor.
Despite what many think, portrait painting doesn't have to be extremely challenging, as long as you:
1. Choose great reference photos (high contrast, clear values)
2. Focus on drawing the ABSTRACT SHAPES you see
3. Work in perhaps 1-2 values, and monochromatically.
Here are links to the reference photos for this one, plus 2 more I think you'll find great for this:

Darn, that was a convincing demonstration. It’s all about the shape.
I loved this demonstration, it really teaches you to train your eyes to only see the subject as a series of positive and negative values.
Effective reminder that portraits shouldn't be so intimidating. You're so good at this!
Exactly! They are like any other subject 😊 Light, dark, colors, composition
I have tried to avoid drawing or painting people for years. Now I am inspired to try this technique! Thank you!
I feel like I learned more from this video than all ten of your last videos I watched. Thank you so much for taking the time to link them. Subscribe!
OMG! I must forever be grateful to UA-cam for suggesting me this after 6 months from uploading. Thank you so much Liron. I love all your videos too 😍
Definitely going to try doing something like this! I'm drawing and painting every day this year.
Beautiful!! It's a great demo!!
Great study lesson
Thanks Liron I haven't painted for about 6 months and this video has inspired me massively
Nice to meet you
I love your approach. thank you.
Beautiful paintings and the cat howling only adds to the ambiance!
Really enjoyed that. I’ve been wanting to paint people, but have found it challenging. This will loosen me up. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your talent😊
반가워요공감합니다
Happy to share as much as I can, Julia! Thank you 😊🙏🏼🙏🏼
Phenomenal. My favorite tutorial of yours so far. Paint shapes and values --not objects.
Just what I needed to learn today. Amazing. Thank you.
GREAT demonstration. Thanks.
Thank you Mason! 😊🙏🏼 Happy I could help
Wow! Thanks Liron
Your video subjects and teaching is by far the best on youtube. Your painting quality is getting way up there dude.
좋은이야기입니다
Favorite background processing, mature feeling
I know artists can have a talent to paint a certain subject matter but I’m trying to develop my skills in painting people’s faces. This is a very helpful video. My style is loose with some detail. Faces seem to have a lot of detail. I guess I need to pray about it and start painting and stop thinking.
Okay! I did it! How cool is that! Not just one, but two so far!
Just tried it and it turned out AMAZING
Your tutorials are criminally underrated, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS PRECIOUS VIDEO!
It was my first portrait ever, I was always afraid to attempt one and now I have a wonderful portrait of my dear husband 🥳
Wow thank you so much! 🙏😊
Way to go!! I'm sure he'll love it ❤
This one is so great and I will be mentioning you to my watercolor portrait painters in class today during my demo, as I love this way of working the shapes of the face. Thanks Liron.
Oh thank you so so much ☺️☺️ I’m so happy I can help
Wow! This is awesome. I have been avoiding portraits because they scare me like you said. This is such a good tip, especially if you just focus on the shapes, you won't be freaking out because it is supposed to be a face. I love this. Thanks! I will be trying this soon!
Simply great
Thank you 😊🙏🏼
I did this technique at my art therapy this morning. For the first time ever I painted a small portrait that looked like the picture. Thank you!
Excellent video! Simplicity requires real talent, though... and you have it!
I'm trying this today. I love your style b
That's my work for tomorrow!!!! It looks such fun. Thanks Liron. How about simple colour portrait painting next?
Oh now I just have to scour my photo album for something and I’m off. Can’t wait to try this. Truly impressive. Thanks so much for taking the time to share. x
Thank you Susan! Let me know how it goes!! 😊🙏🏼
The color is very beautiful. I learned very much. Thanks for sharing. 😊🎨✨✨

I'm good at portraits but everything else is challenging for me.

I did one of these small portraits today, using a photo taken by my father in 1953!!! Turned out really well! ( I don't often say that 😆) thank you Liron.
Very good minimalistic approach
thank you Liron!
Wow! wow! Absolutely fascinating. Going to look for examples to play with
Thank you for posting this idea...!
Superfun and cool is to do that without the initial pencil drawing. You will be amazed, how much you will get better after a few tries! Dont be scared to loosen up a bit and just play!
Wow!

Wow! i am quite surprised with the outcome of my painting just following your techniques! Great tutorial! Thank you so much!
I need to practice this.
Nice to meet you
Good job man super
😊🙏🏼 thanks!
I enjoyed! I am using the General Pencil Co charcoal set to learn values and portraiture is quickly becoming of greater interest. Kudos for selecting a BnW photo. This is what I am embarking with...color can come in later. 6-2 months. I am also using a draw in 3d book, which is very simple in approach, teaching the basics of contour, shadow, and light. I think I might mention that your mic level is a bit low. had to turn you way up, Liron. I will try this tutorial, and maybe you might think about having a FB group??? Take care bud.
Thank you Liron, this is such a good tutorial.
This is genius. Thank you so much for such a Breakthru art tutorial!
Thank you, Liron. You make it look so easy!
Excellent tutorial! LOVE it. Thank you for simplifying the process which takes away the fear of painting portraits! God BLESS.
WOW! thank you!
So quick.
🌻
yes Doeable. I really enjoyed these paintings. Don't need a lot of colors and works out the imagination.
That's amazing. 💓
This is amazing! Like magic! Cant wait to try my hand
Excellent! Best regards!
😊 Thank you
Thanks for that amazing demonstration. I want to watch it a few more times. I love your teaching method.
This was genuinely so helpful!! Watched this then sat down and painted 4 of these 😁
AMAZING!! 😁🎨👏👏👏 I’m so proud! That’s the best way to learn, improve and produce results!
I'm not too good i figurative painting ,its hard for me sometimes especially for accurate one, still need to learn more. What you showing on video make all easier ,well done Liron💙💙💙
Thank you so much Lenny! ☺️🙏🏼 This concept can actually apply to any subject, indeed not only portraits. The big thing here is to choose a suitable reference with strong clear shapes and contrasts!
Such a short video yet solidly packed with great information that encourages me to try this also!
Love it , this is so simple and pretty
Thanks so much just what I was needing
Very happy to hear (:
Fabulous. Thank you!
You make it look so easy! Despite my terror you've inspired me to try! Lol
Haha so happy to hear Veronika! Keep it up and don’t give up 😁
this looks like so much fun! I am inspired.
So happy I could help ☺️🙏🏼🙏🏼
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank you so much ❤❤❤
Molto molto interessante! Per me è stato un po' difficile ottenere un colore pieno e scuro, forse perchè ho gli acquerelli godet e non ho quelli in tubetto. Inoltre il colore si asciuga troppo presto e quindi la stesura ha delle forme spurie.
Liron Thanks
You answered so many questions that I did not realise I needed answers to.
Brilliant lesson.
Now, this is unique. There is so much drama in these portraits. So simple yet incredibly difficult. Good job!
Thank you 😁😁 Maximum effectiveness in a simple approach
Wow this is such a great way to take away some of the fear. Excellent tutorial. Going to give this a try.
Ty liron I really loved the way you made it so easy for us .... Keep it up
Thank you so much ☺️ Trying to make the tutorials accessible to as many people as I can!!
Excellent.
Really cool im going to do this later
Nice to meet you
Okay back from trying this, I’m surprised to say mine actually looks pretty okay🙃 it doesn’t look too much like the person but it _is_ recognizably a person which I see as an absolute win! Subscribed💙
Wow this is awesome 🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍
thank u, love this !
loved the video.
This is so cool. I enjoy painting portraits but have always used oils. Going to try this in watercolors. Thank you!!!!
Thank you Sandra! 😊🙏🏼 Let me know how it goes
Thanks for this video is really fun and I will try it...
Thank you. I did some if this in a drawing class. However, watching you really helped alot. You're explanations really showed how and why shadows and values can make a portrait pop!
Thank you ☺️ Very happy you found it helpful! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I enjoy your videos but I must say this is one of the best. Thanks.
