      It’s the logo for an old 1970s US toy line called Gi Joe Adventure Team. So it’s AT for “Adventure Team.” A lot of people have thought it was the Appalachian Trail logo which may be similar. 😊👍

And use aquazol as the binder which helps with lightfastness and is used to restore old art. I love them!. They also love to move. They explode in water. Let me know if you try these and if you switch to them. They are my fave and i have 83 of their colors. They just came out with 3 mew colors but they have those 3 only in half pans for thr moment If they release them as open stock ill buy the 3 colors im missing. I hope you enjoy them. @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому +2

      Sonsoles CQ It is a lot. I do tend to pull a couple things out if I know I'm not going to be using them on a specific outing. For instance, I usually just carry one kind of paper and leave the others behind. However, when the bag is sitting at home, it's fully-loaded so everything is in one place and ready-to-go without having to rummage around for everything I need. As a side note (that you may be interested in) I have replaced all of the rounds in this kit with Escodas. I've found them to be superior to the ones I had been using.

    • @sonsolescq
      @sonsolescq 6 років тому

      Brian Ashmore Studio I totally get it. I have another hobby which is archery and I have everything in my training big, not just the arrows and the bow but almost everything, in case I need something. I love when it is fully-loaded at home. I made last week a video on my channel about a traveling watercolor set for long travel, and I put more stuff that I need. I am sorry it is in Spanish! But I see the point of convenience, comfort and a bag with everything ready-to-go! It is like an already done checklist!
      Have you replaced all your rounds by Escoda travel brushes? The 3 ones that you have shown me? I should definitely get more brushes, but since "long Escoda numbers" are so expensive, I really want to buy first knowing that it is working for me, or at least for someone else! I am the only person that is interesting in watercolors or even art, that's also why I ask you! Thank you! Have an artist day :)

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому +2

      I can imagine archery would involve packing quite many items, as well. I still use regular rounds in the studio but use Escoda rounds in my travel kits. The ones I showed you are a few of them. I've bought around 10 Escoda travel brushes for various kits and applications. I've used other brands like Da Vinci Kolinsky but I keep coming back to the Escodas. They are excellent! I know what you mean about being the only one interested in watercolors. I am in the same situation... which is partly why I started this channel. To get to talk and "geek out" with others that love watercolor like yourself!

    • @sonsolescq
      @sonsolescq 6 років тому

      Yes, you are right about archery materials! Wow 10 Escoda travel brushes! A lot! Do you have some of the sets of 3 or 6 brushes? I would like to buy one, but I am not sure which one. Have you tried the Reserva, a Kolinsky-tajmyr sable brush? And also have you tried Aquario? I read in the website that it is like Da Vinci Gris Pur Paint Brush.
      I have started my youtube channel for the same reason! :D Let watercolor unite us!
      BTW, I have a recommendation for your #30x30DirectWatercolor2018: paint Queen Padme Amidala in her Red Invasion Gown dress, please! Or Enfys Nest (from Han Solo, a Star Wars story) without the mask. So many freckles and redhead! :D Thanks!

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому +1

      All my Escoda brushes have been bought individually. Those sets look really nice but they tend to have very small brushes that I probably wouldn't use. I have not tried a Reserva, yet. I bought one and then gave it as a gift to a friend. I need to buy another one so I can see what they are like. I have not tried the Aquario. Hmmmm. I have a few DaVinci travel rounds that I DID buy in a set of 3. However, I've been kind of disappointed in them. They don't seem to hold a point very well and the thick barrel handles are hard to get used to for me. I much prefer the Escodas. I will take your 30x30 suggestions into consideration! Thanks! (That would be a lot of freckles. Ha, ha!)

    Thank you for sharing. I've been enjoying your videos and hope you make more. Love your work too! I highly recommend Daniel Smith watercolor for filling half or full pans. M Graham are wonderful paints but some colors never fully solidify and can be messy for travel - best for studio work IMO. I don't fill pans with Winsor & Newton tubes ever - they tend to crumble when dry. You could use gum arabic when filling to help with this but colors can also color shift or have rewetting problems (W&N does *not* recommend this process - best to use their half pans; they have a great Field Box Set). I have had great experiences with DS so far, plus they are fantastic watercolors.

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому +2

      Mary Prasad Hi Mary! Thanks very much for the advice! I've had some success with M Graham FINALLY drying in the palette but it seems to take weeks. Ha, ha! I know what you mean about the W&N getting dry and crumbly. In my palette, Burnt Umber is the worst offender and I've actually resorted to buying pre-filled pans just for that color. I'm going to have to try the Daniel Smith colors, at some point. I keep hearing great things. Thanks for watching!

    • @MaryPrasadArt
      @MaryPrasadArt 6 років тому

      Hi Brian! You're welcome. I only buy W&N in pans - they are excellent watercolors... one of the best at glazing/layering. I will probably stop using M Graham for travel - I have one small palette with a few colors and the yellow in particular never dried (don't remember the exact yellow offhand). When I rewet them, they also seem to stay wet longer. I love them but will probably just use them in the studio or for Plein-Air (not to bring on vacation). I'm going to be doing a video series on palettes (esp. travel and mini) one of these days; right now I'm working on one for a hybrid water/sable brush.

      Hi Claire, So sorry for the late reply. I started out using the Escoda Versatils as they mimicked sable quite nicely. Since this video, I've added an Escoda Perla (white synthetic), an Escoda Prado or two (synthetic and very similar to the Versatil), and a couple of Ultimos (synthetic squirrel hair). I've really been enjoying the Escodas and find myself using them at home instead of my "studio brushes." They are just that good. I will be doing a video soon comparing all four of these Escoda synthetic travel brushes. Thanks so much for watching!

    Looks like a VERY complete & compact kit for most every sort of outdoor painting. I have just one question about your bag. Are those straps at the bottom of the flap side of your bag adjustable in length, at all? Would you be able to slide a fold-up lightweight easel under those straps? I realize that the easel legs (even folded up) would stick out of either side a fair amount, but might be handy to have along for plein-aire work. Just curious...

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  5 років тому

      Hi Sally! If I understand your question correctly, I would say no. Those straps aren't very long. They are adjustable but are really only there to hold the buckles that snap onto the flap. They aren't really long enough to put much through even adjusted to their longest point. Hope that helps.

So, the DS paints are a nice in-between from M Graham and W&N. They aren't hard and brittle like some W&N's can get, but have a nice vibrancy and rewetting ability like the M Graham's without being runny or sticky (at least for awhile). Thanks for the suggestion! I may try the Senneliers, at some point. I'd love to try them all but $$$. Ha, ha.

      When I look at the Amazon listing, now, it shows a much longer narrower-looking flask than what I have. I’m not sure if it’s a skewed picture or if they’ve changed them since I ordered mine.

    Brian, thank you for very interesting and useful presentation of your toolkit.
    Can you please share how you prepare your new tinboxes? There is a very annoying beading of paint on the enameled palette surface. I tried a few recommended things like washing with baking soda, with toothpaste etc but all of them are not good enough. What is your method? Thank you in advance.

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 років тому

      Ted North Hi Ted! Beading is problematic, for sure. To be honest, I don’t really have any good answers. My 5” fold-out tin palette works very well without beading. Can’t remember if it started that way or not. It may have just got better over-time. My 12” tin has some beading but my aluminum studio palette is the worst offender. I wish I had an answer. Yong Chen did a video about this problem on plastics. Maybe there’s something useful there??

      Hi Brian! Thank you for your prompt response. Yes, I've seen Young Chen's video a few months ago and it did not help me much. Liz Steel recommended ( www.lizsteel.com/trip-prep-getting-my-palette-ready/) some abrasive cleaner Gumption but it is australian general kitchen cleaner. Brenda Swenson talks about mild abrasive such as baking soda here (brendaswenson.blogspot.com.au/2015/06/how-to-set-up-watercolor-travel-palette.html).
      So if even you don't have an ultimate solution then probably nobody does:). I will try to somehow live with beading as everybody else lives. Thanks again for your great channel!

    I hate pencil sharpeners. Havent used one since third grade. Because they often times dont give you the right sharpness and you cant control the length of lead that sticks out.
    When I’m doing a quick sketch for a painting I like to use a harder pencil so it doesnt leave a dark mark. I use a knife to sharpen the pencil lead to about an inch long exposed and its so great for that. Pretty much never needs to be sharpened again until several sketches later

    M Graham paints will dry enough to carry in a pallet. I do it all the time. I have spoken with the company and they have worked with their formulas so that artists could be able to do this. It may however depend on your climate. They are a great company and very supportive of artists and community.

    Hey Brian, just stumbled onto your video -it's always nice seeing what's in someone else's to-go setup. I've been cracking up because your contents are nearly identical to mine, and each time you pull another item out, YEP! got that! Including that little zippered supply bag, which is by "Lahit Labs" - I have two and they've proved to be my very favorites over the years, neither show any sign of wear at all. I have one setup mostly for sketching and mixed media and one for watercolors. I keep my watercolor gear in a mini Fjallraven Kanken backpack, another quality piece of gear that holds up to abuse. Love the DaVinci travel brushes, want a couple more, also the little pop out water cup is nice. Did you move to M. Graham? If so, how have they worked for you? I've also been a WN person for years, but have recently been playing with Schminke and Senneliers. I've also been hacking my travel palettes to make them lighter to haul + hold more pans (by removing inner clip tray & adding sm magnetic strips to bottoms of pans - works great!) Anyhow, thx for a great video. You've inspired me to make a video of my setup. Am curious to see more of your videos. Best! Pix

      Hi! Sorry to take so long to get back to you! I did mess around with M Graham for a little while but have settled on Daniel Smith watercolors. They don't get brittle like Winsor and Newton but are also not runny and sticky like M Graham tends to be. They seem to be a perfect "middle ground" between the two. That's pretty funny that you have so many of the same materials. :)
