A look at the first 15 of my small paintings for the 30x30 Direct Watercolor Challenge 2018. Instagram: brianashmore_studio Facebook: Brian Ashmore Studio
This is really inspiring. You are an amazing artist. I hope one day I can paint quickly. I’m very slow. I guess maybe I could challenge myself even if the paintings don’t come out the way I want them to!
Jessica Moore Thanks, Jessica! I’m usually a pretty slow painter. This challenge has definitely helped me to speed up and be more immediate with the paint.
Really inspiring Brian! I'm super impressed by a bunch of them... especially the Wyeth portrait (you did all of these without any underdrawing???), and Yoda... that one is so cool, you could easily sell that one many times over! Prints perhaps????? I'll take one... Yes please!
Draw Paint Repeat Thank, Steve! Right... no pencil. However I do block in shapes with paint lightly and then try to correct shapes and proportions while painting.
I love every one of your paintings. Yoda looks IDENTICAL ‼️ You don’t seem to be very happy about some of your works… BUT THEY’RE GREAT. I love the bear in the water, the Japanese toy, your dog…, I like them ALL A-LOT! - You’re very talented. It was fun seeing your work. Thanks
Your work is over the top wonderful. Very inspiring! The only negative I see is your negative opinions of your work. Shhhh! Let the viewers decide! Clearly we love it!
Yeah, I think you're officially my favorite watercolor artist. I love how you can keep things loose while also having a lot of detail, which makes things look realistic but still have a quality about it that you can tell it was made my hand. Also the way you layer looks fantastic. Really really nice work. I especially like the bear at 9:00
They are all beautiful, but your portraits are amazing. So is Diego. I have a Jack Russell named Daisy. They are soooooo smart and loyal! Thanks for sharing your awesome work!
Love the paintings! It was a great help because I happen to be working on 2 baby grizzly bears hugging each other. Sometimes when the color of their fur seems the same it can be a challenge. I guess as long as the values are right they could be any color. I didn't do much predrawing well because it's fur. Great insight from a true talented artist. Thanks again!
Jennie French Thank you, Jennie!! Yes, fur can definitely be a challenge... I still struggle with it, a lot. It is fun to play with the colors in fur, though. I do enjoy that. Best of luck with your baby grizzlies painting!
Love your skills! The first of your dog with the shadow is just wonderful. The grizzly your are not sure of has a nice feeling of movement, as though his gaze is the still bit about him. Can't wait to see the rest of your challenge. I think your years of illustration come through strongly.
Lindy Ashford Thanks so much, Lindy! Thanks for your thoughts on the Grizzly. I think I struggle more than I should with my years of experience. Ha, ha!!
Thanks for the feedback!! I will give it some thought. To be honest, I kind of "wing it" and am not as good as others at explaining my thought process. I might try, tho... :)
You are an amazing artist I'm so jealous. I bought a Peyne's Grey because I see so many artists use it and praise it and now I don't know how to use it
Loati Thank you so much, Loati! I use Paynes Gray as my darkest dark when I need something close to black. A true black paint can look dull and "lifeless." However, I probably over use it in this capacity. It's also a nice muted blue-gray when used at lighter values.
Brian Ashmore Studio yes i can see how i could really improve my skills but percevering. I may continue at my own pace at some point. Training for the next challenge 😀
I disagree with you on the grizzly portrait (#13 I think) - I would love it, and would love cards of it to send to friends. We are always so self-critical! Really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing with us.
I thought so too when I saw it. It's like those paintings that gets chosen when entered into a juried fine arts show. It might not win the big prize money but it will be the first to sell.
Thanks very much, Alma! I hope to be selling sets of greeting cards of my work later in the summer. Maybe I’ll include this bear. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I am so in love with Yoda and Obi Wan. Also I like all your bears collection, even with defects, I can appreciate the different variations of the colours and I love it! Mazinger Z ROCKS and Diego is soooooooooo cool! I love the shadow of Diego. I am so afraid of painting my cat Sith because I could ruin the painting trying to be precise and capture her essence, which I think it is so difficult! She is awesome, I have some pics of her: instagram.com/siththecat/
I am in that challenge as well, but just a beginner-so I am not creating anything striking. But I do have fun and learn a lot. The only thing that never happens to me is not having a ton of ideas what to paint or what method to try. So, I am doing this challenge with a kind of an extra-challenge by only using my handmade watercolor that I make myself. Maybe you wanna come over to my instagram and see what I posted...@t.z.h1 Greetz!!!
Vani Nice work, Vani! It is tough to come up with ideas for this challenge! However, I think its a good exercise for any watercolorist. Thanks for watching!
Man! You are slaying that challenge. I’m so jealous I couldn’t participate. Killer work. Man- what a good exercise too!
Thanks, my friend! Definitely a good exercise!

gardener Thank you so much!!
Your day 13 grizzly painting is my favorite. I think it turned out better than you think it did. It just has a creative flair.
SoulSistersSurvivors Sisters Thanks so much!! I think artists can be their own worst critics, for sure.

I’d love to see you create a video that breaks down in great detail your step by step process 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Wow! These are fantastic! 👏🏽👏🏽😍
Thanks much!
I really liked the one of your son from Day 2. I guess we are our own worst critics. All of your portraits inspire me to try again.
C0raBr0wn Thanks, Cora! It just didn’t turn out the way I envisioned and the likeness on my son isn’t very good. I appreciate your thoughts!
