I think this video is a good reminder for all the amateurs out there that tennis is freaking hard. All of us, at all levels, have bad days. Or days that we aren’t feeling it. Day’s that we are rusty after some time off. We are tired from previous days, legs aren’t working. Forget the idea that us pros play amazing everyday. That’s a myth. We just keep going back to play a little bit more each day. I just played the best and the worst match I’ve played all year in back to back days. It’s a wild sport that owes us nothing. Just keep showing up!

Well said Karue. Thank you and Taylor both for sharing this practice session. Taylor is a super-talented player such as you and I will not be surprised at all if he reaches the top 5 ATP ranking again (maybe higher from there).
Just my observation that if the level difference is significant e.g. perhaps more than say 3 UTR points, even on bad days the player with higher level usually finds a way to win (there would be exceptions of course). When the levels are closer (I think skill-wise you and Taylor are on the same level), you can wake up in the morning feeling rusty and horrible (previous match or other reasons as you mentioned) and see not much working on that day.
The other thing about tennis is how the players match up style-wise (so many other factors also). Every great tennis player has a kryptonite. For you maybe certain players (fast scramblers who do not hit hard necessarily) may give you more trouble that would give to Fritz. For Taylor, those who hit the ball on the rise such as players like you may cause more issues. The algorithm to play a tennis match is just insane.

Huge point, needed to read this. Easy to let a bad day destroy your confidence and question who you are as a tennis player lol

karue at the end of the day is a top 700 player with a lot of experience against americans, well played to him! taking a set off a top 20 player is no small feat. but remember that tennis isn't really about one-off results. karue might have beaten him here, but if you pit them up several times throughout the year against each other in big events, chances are that fritz will win a majority. having the consistency over 40 weeks is what makes someone move from top 50 to top 20. an example of this would be players like eubanks or draper: highly talented but not consistent enough to make it to the top 20, whereas a grinder like baez is able to. regardless, this is a phenomenal video

Great effort on your part. You served much better than he did and returned amazingly. I can’t recall more than 1 return error and you were in close!
This tells me more about Taylor‘s lack of effort in practice than almost anything. I can’t imagine a crappy level of preparation or execution or focus from anyone else in the top 13 except Tsitsipas. Taylor is moping and F-bombing from first few points. Not able to regroup after he was broken in first game.
I wish I had not seen how he practices. It’s hard to respect his lack of effort and discipline and focus. So many gifts. I am sure if you had his gifts you would be top five.

rebound/power on a racquet is based on how close you can get to the sweet spot or more flexible area on the racquet, a difference of a few mm makes a massive difference in power. I just think the top pros are so good at getting that close so often that its just something you can't teach up to a certain point

The difference between top ranked pros and lesser ranked pros is smaller than you think. The key is holding an elite level for an entire 3 or 5 set match. That’s what separates. Fritz would win a 3 or 5 setter off karue 10 times out of 10.
Also there’s an adrenaline factor here where Fritz is used to playing in front of 10s of thousands of people, not some random local park. Probably tough for him to even get up for
    Still impressive though. Great playing

10/10? def not on this day. either fritz wasn't really trying during this practice set, didn't care, or really was just this much off. highly doubt he'd take the second set either, but we'll never know.

Would not be 10/10 if we are talking Fritz vs Sell in a Bo3. Probably more like 8/10 with Bo5 being 9/10.

I respectfully disagree with both of you here. He’s a top 15 consistent tier player in the entire world. That’s no accident. Karue is excellent in his own right but there is levels to this. It be 10/10

@@nofacenation5260 bro karue just beat him handily 6-2 what more is to speculate there's proof right there Karue is at least a top 100 player which in this case mean he can beat anyone as Djokovic just lost to nardi and Marcus willis beat a guy at 50 ion the world at Wimbledon ranked in the 700s if you're good you're good that's it these rankings are just numbers

This had to be a nice boost of confidence for Katie, he definitely played really well. Taylor on the other hand was completely misfiring and didn’t have his serve. Kind of how his season has been going this far

It's a practice set, and Fritz looked like he was not 100% focused, but Sell did not make it easy on him. Loved the consistency of Sell's groundstrokes, only executing the shot he was supposed to hit (as opposed to the shot you want to hit). This shows that Sell is physically and technically there with a top 10 player, as well as showing his mental strength. If Sell continues his path up the rankings, he will have no issues competing with higher ranked players at tournaments once he gets used to the pace and mental stress of an official match at those higher levels. Thanks for sharing the video!

Without looking at the score, but looking at your consistency, shot selection and %, this is top 150 easily. It´s all about being consistent at that level.

I think Fritz got exactly what he wanted out of this practice set. He’d taken some time off after playing a lot on the road, and just needs to get some reps in against a quality player to start sharpening up again. No more no less.
