Very interesting technique! Give's me a lot of ideas and inspiration for some little projects I have in mind. Thinking about making a three-part teak wood DM screen with Soss invisible hinges and a scrollwork etched nickel silver edging.
It's fantastic to see that not everything has to be done using CGI Although it slightly blows my mind to think how much it must have all cost 🤯 But whoever picked up the tab I salute you . An epic in every regard !
The amount of money this show must spend on details that 90 percent of people don't even notice, is insane. Like those 3 wooden chairs. The guy that made them does amazing work but I couldn't tell you if I saw them in the show or not...and I'm pretty sure the camera wouldn't know the difference between painted silver and actual applied metal. Whatever HBO is giving them for a budget, at least they're putting that money on the screen. I want one of those chairs. That guy could make a nice side business recreating the HOD Kings Chairs and selling them.
To tell the truth, I noticed these chairs back in the first season and was amazed by the quality (even considering that the details are hard to see in the series). Even then it seemed authentic and comfortable to me.
It’s so great to see Great British movie craftsmen and women showcased on Tested. Ghostbusters and now HOTD. The UK is killing it with production facilities at the mo! Makes me wish I’d changed industries before I was 30, now I’m 41 and it’s impossible. I was offered a Trainee SfX position by a friend who works on HOTD, but I couldn’t take the hit on finances!
Back when the first trailers for season two aired, I noticed that the king’s council chair had more steel on it than it had during Viserys’ reign, and I was blown away by the level of detail that the prop modelers/designers/etc have put into this show. Each prop has a story of its own, and even though that story may go unnoticed by some, some people (like me) do notice them! I’m so excited that I finally found a video where someone is talking about these chairs. I’ve been obsessed with them since the trailer! 😅
One of my favorite hobbies that I never tried to do myself, making models. I have built RC truck kits and things like that but I have never built a model and I absolutely love seeing them and watching them be built. It's something I want to get into, soon. Thank you for sharing this with us, Adam. I know a lot about RC, perhaps the combination is inevitable.
When I did antique furniture restoration ... I had insetted brass, lead and ivory inlay into needed areas of such real world pieces. It was fun and unique being a part of each pieces history and providence. Nice work on House of the Dragon's props!
those épisodes are awesome and we discover so much on the behind the scene of the props ! there is so much that is done and that we never really see on screen, but if those details were not there, we would notice it immediately, something would feel wrong.

Adam, you have the absolute best haircut/hairstyle that I’ve ever seen on a balding guy. That may sound like a back-handed compliment but it really isn’t. I’m a guy with thinning hair who has been looking for examples of good haircuts for guys like us. I hate haircuts that just try to hide the issue; beyond just looking cowardly they usually don’t work, and when they do, it’s often only from certain angles. I was looking for examples of guys who embrace their thinning hair and cut it to look as good as possible. In my opinion, you’re the gold standard. I sort of doubt that you’ll ever see this, but if you do, thank you.

3:17 this is incorrect. As Viserys clearly explains to young Alicent, he does not make the models. The stonemakers do the work. Viserys does the research and tells them what to make.
Still seems like valid phrasing; perfectly reasonable that his hand-drawn plans might become simpler due to diminished abilities from aging / illness, yielding simpler carvings.
One wonders, if, minor, imperfections, ever make it to the finished story? Like, during shooting, some bit of a throne, snagged a cloak. The actors did their thing, and in a later scene, we see a craftsman smoothing out that snag.
My take on 3-D printers I’m sure is not a popular one in regards to model making. Although more convenient and accurate it’s like a musician that doesn’t write their own songs. It’s just not quite the same, just a little less impressive.
It just makes me sad that time that used to be spent creating with hands, really making something, is now spent in front of a screen and essentially cleaning up and assembling prints. It's impressive but ends up looking almost CGI it's so neat. 🤷
Kinda hard to watch this knowing that the shorter season and lack of a real season finale was due to budget. Definitely a part of me that would have preferred ikea furniture and a satisfying ending
It is cool to see the practical effects this show. I thought GoT was one of the worst shows ever so have not bothered with this. Does not mean I cannot appreciate the work that goes into making it all.
Because they’re doing more than just that one model. Shit takes time to be done right. And you think Savage just knocked up a camera ready model in a couple of weeks? Production on the Phantom Menace began in 1994- 3 years out from filming and four years from the release date. They were still building props and models for shots right up until filming began and whilst the shoot was going on. It takes a lot of work and a lot of time to make decent props and models for a production. Knocking things up in a couple of weeks is how you end up with the kind of work found on the Rings of Power! 😂

But Adam said how he knocked up a model of the Jawa Hangar in a day for a trailer back in the day. I'm not saying it's a 1:1 comparison, but it just seems these guys have generous timeframes, even given modern techniques like CNC milling and printing. Your example of Episode One includes writing, making the concept art, and location scouting, but the prop and set building took place over about a year before filming, and presumably with more workload. Ironically enough, the budgets are pretty similar with inflation.
Seems weird to me that Adam is so surprised it's hand carving. It would take much more time and effort to CAD that stuff than to carve it. If you needed half a dozen identical ones to abuse and destroy on set, then I can see it, but otherwise, it would have been weird to me if they had CADed it instead of carving with gouges and chisels.

The show looks great, but the writing.... Got to S2E4 and I couldn't believe the obvious traps fallen into and bad decisions everyone made. There is this cliche in GoT that every win must be simultaneously undercut by a loss that is wearing thin with me.
That’s exactly the source material. This whole war is just a plot device to kill the dragons. Rhaenys going alone to rooks rest after Luke was just killed is what George planned. Book spoilers… Moondancer and Sunfyre both flying above dragonstone at the exact same time is written as a coincidence to kill a dragon off. Seasmoke arriving at tumbleton the same exact time Vermithor was getting enraged. Causing three dragon deaths. Syrax just landing at the dragonpit to die… George’s crappy writing. Point being, they can’t fix George’s story. When they do deviate people hate it. When they don’t, they get the blame.

Well, Heritage just unveiled a GoT studio auction, and the showrunner is a collector with a podcast all about collecting, so I'd expect it's likely.
