- House of the Dragon's Master Armourer Tim Lewis shows Adam the scope and detail of the weapons created for the show, starting with an ornate handheld crossbow that is meant to be wielded while on dragonback! They move on to the massive five-meter wooden ballista being constructed and examine the miniature scale model of this ballista that his team built for reference.

I think algorithm doesn’t get your videos on larger audience because for someone who isn’t american I couldn’t understand a single bit of what was this video about. Change the title of the video and the thumbnail and you’ll get more audience. Btw loved mythbusters and watching your builds and I would have propably watched it anyways, just a thought.
@@jere1342 The title cannot get more specific mate, lmao.
All that work and detail just to be shown 2 seconds on screen when ulf rides over kings landing. Dam. Very impressive build.
The funny part is that it may not be noticeable, it's in movement, fast scene but if it was badly made it would stick out as a sore thumb.
I think the scorpion will be shown again in the next season.
They had a whole scene in episode one with Ser Arryk where they prepare scorpions before they realise the dragon in the sky is Vhagar. And we will see these things in action next season.
There's a few scenes throughout the season where we see them.
@@creato938 100% yea
I love the pure joy he has on his face showing off just the model!
Can’t wait to get a closer look at the dragon saddles. The craftsmanship put into them is overlooked in my opinion.
"Hey, Tod Cutler from Tod's Workshop here. Did this ballista really exist? No, but ..."
Just that small-scale model was a piece of art in itself - wow... 😮
If you like this, it is worth checking out Tods Workshop. The guy made a lot of the weapons for The Witcher and has his own working trebuchet. His experiments are great.
Tod, from Tod's Workshop and Tod Cutler?
+1 for Tod's Workshop... some great content
It's sad that all of the effort was wasted because The Witcher script was so bad. They ignored Andrzej Sapkowski's work and focus on progressive propaganda.
His channel is a delight. And he has cross-content with Matt Easton (Schola Gladitoria) and Jeorg Sprave "Let me show you it's features!"
We built an arbalist about twenty years ago using hawthorn tree trunks. It shot fence posts 200 yards through the field to the river below, much to the to the surprise of some salmon poachers. "Betty" was about 35 feet across. She used aircraft cable for a string. We abandoned her to the field after a catastrophic near fatal failure when six of the nine inch lag bolts securing the winch to her oak log center beam ripped out, whizzing past Marks (only one big enough to wind it) head, throwing winch, and fence post half way to the river. good times.
adam you need to convince them to release the cad model of the miniature that thing is too friggin cool
These behind the scenes videos are amazing. We as an audience see the finished product so seeing all the intricacy that happens which makes what we get to view is so important. Props to the props and every other department that gives us epic moments we'll never forget.
They spend so much money and time building props that are never even shown.
I made a big ballista using 4 skies for the limbs. Making anything what can shoot a metal rod through a car is a time well spent.
Wow, so cool that they actually made this for real, when it probably could have been easily CGI.
Calling out the fantastic camera work on this one. Not jumping when the ballista was fired was impressive, then getting the fiberglass molds by ducking under it was fantastic.
Just the mockup/model of the ballister "crossbow" for the larger Redkeep scene is beautiful. Looks like real brass on the mechanism parts. Wish I could work/tour their prop shop ... Thank you Adam and the Tested Crew 🖖
That model ballista is one of the things that defines just how different professionals are. If I managed to make that model I'd be done. The time and mental energy it took me to complete it would mean that I wouldn't want to touch the thing again except to play with it.
Love Adam's enthusiasm about the props
It's amazing how much time, effort and the craftsmanship that goes into building these props for the criminal amount of screen time they get. Just brilliant! Love it!
You can't wipe the smile off my face right now .. thank you for sharing this 😊
Once again. I do enjoy watohing your joy when visiting other wonderful creative workshops. thanx 💙🌻💙
I need one of those ballista for my desk and load it with nerf darts
You stole my thought!
Look up Crunch labs. Mark Rober makes a build box for adults and with motorized Gatling gun with nerf darts.
Last time I was this early, crossbows were still modern weaponry... 😮
Some tribe in the middle of nowhere: "Wait they're not??"
Lol nice
Every bass pro shop has like five different models you can buy
3:33 excellent cut with the audio. It wasn't until the mic was cut off I realize it went from Cam audio to Wireless almost seamlessly.
Might seem like a silly question, but how would one aim a weapon of that size especially since he said it would be mounted 30ft up on a wall. I suppose if it were balanced enough you could use ropes to pull the front down.
ITS on a pivot point with counter weights essentially floating there being able to aim is simple
Ive never wanted to replicate or create a functioning crossbow from a show ever, that is awesome. 0:48
While I was thinking, clearly not a functional bow,
@@2adamast lol true but it looks awesome and wonderfully engineered
My dad and I built a tabletop model of a historically accurate ballista for a science project when I was in like 6th grade. It was awesome and shot No. 2 pencils which were like the perfect size for the bolts/arrows. I got a really good grade on it too. Unfortunately however it was destroyed when my stupid-ass friend and his brothers left it in their driveway and their mom ran over it with the car. We carpooled together too and from school, and I accidentally left the model in their mom's SUV when I brought it home on a friday. Instead of leaving it alone, my friend and his brothers took it out to play with it and just left it sitting outside in the middle of their driveway (they were pretty wealthy so they tended not to take good care of a lot of their stuff in general). I was so upset because my father and I spent an entire three days of a long weekend designing and building the entire thing from scratch, and they just destroyed it like it was another one of their toys they could just replace like it was nothing. When my friend gave it back to me all in splinters he like barely even apologized which is something I never really got over after the fact. He just kinda handed it to me all destroyed like "we left in the driveway and it got ran over, oh well my bad". Then he just walked away and never brought it up ever again. His mom never said anything or apologized either which was really weird to me honestly (this was in the south and normally people are really conscious of their manners and how they make other people feel, especially in the more well-to-do portions of southern society). Suffice to say I was absolutely livid, but I couldn't really show it and just tried to act like it wasn't that big of a deal, partly because it just isn't cool to "care" about stuff when you're that age - especially something like a school project that you made with your dad - but also because I didn't have many friends to begin with and I was bullied relentlessly, so I couldn't run the risk of alienating one of the only friends I had or tarnishing my already struggling and precarious social status. As I matured however I grew to resent the entire incident much more, and I really wish I would have just thrown caution to the wind and given that little sh*t what-for by telling him exactly how I really felt and explained that I had half a mind to go nab one of his little creations and taken a sledgehammer and a blowtorch to it with complete abandon and a healthy dose of righteousn indignation. He and his brothers liked to build stuff at home like various potato cannons, ball launchers, and even a miniature trebuchet (among other things) that looked like absolute dogsh*t but actually functioned decently. I had a powerful urge to go grab one of those projects and turn it to ash while forcing him to sit and watch while I gleefully smashed and torched away *his*"hours of labor and emotional investment... Ugh. Over 20 years later and I'm still a little fckin' pressed about that whole situation, plus I'm just salty that I don't still have it, dammit! That thing was wicked rad!
I wonder how far the full size ballista will chuck a pumpkin?
To keep in context In the movie "Lust for Life" they used the house that Van Goshe stayed in but when he stayed there was a tree in front. So they looked at the painting ,found a tree and planted it. In was on screen for about 5 seconds. Good movie!!
It was on screen for only five seconds because it was a painted tree
These will always be the jobs I dream of!
I bet someone of the cast/crew is gone want to shoot a soda/energy drink can of that thing.
Go to Greece. There is "Kotsanas". He has built some items in real size. He has some technical museums in Greece, e.g. in Athens, Olympia etc. I myself are building a steam canon at the moment which should work correctly. I took the design from Kotsanas. I hope to finish it this year and try it out. Its for 30mm steel balls.
great share ! woot tested !
This is really cool dude
This is what I was supposed to be doing with my life.
Paging Tod Cutler! Wooooooow!
Figata adesso voglio costruirne una
"So does this scrimshaw work get you into a meditative state? Or (new-age buzzword, new-age buzzword)?
"Nah, I'm here to do a job......for money"
Great video sir 😊❤
nnever knew tthe diffrence between a scorpion and a balista as far as siege weapon gose
This is how you do a proper fantasy world building. The Lord of The Rings style.
The scene of Tim Lewis flagging Darren made me cringe! And then when he pulled the large ballista bow, he didn't warn the camera person, or check for positioning, before releasing the tension. 🤔🤨
Awesome
I want one!
amazing !!!
i hope they have a way to slow it just before it finished launching the bolt.
Just…wow…🤩
So, that crossbow was never used then? I don't remember anyone using a crossbow on a dragon...
I hope he bloody well keeps that working model! (will we see it at Prop Store 10 years from now?)
Edit: and WTF do they do with a 2 ton crossbow after filming is done? Scrap it?
Pretty much unfortunately
There's always a bigger fish hahaha
woah
Way cool!
is he always so touchy feely?? 🤨
A crossbow for a dragon rider? I must have missed that, which episode was that?
Could of been for the two episodes that were pushed to next season
It’s Baela’s crossbow but she hasn’t used it on dragonback yet.
Yeah that’s what I was gonna say. She had to have used it in that scene she’s talking to Jace about harwin and Lenore.
Right to shoot down a dragon, actually could have been possible I guess
Except that cross bow would shoot a bolt all of 6 inches
Well actually that's a positive thing when you're concerned with safety and you might have Alec Baldwin on set.
@GeneCash sure but hopefully they don't show it firing up close because the speed of the line under tension will look silly
Low blow but still funny @@GeneCash
It's not real unless you film it knocking out a dragon.

😍😍😍😍😍
At age 12 I made a ballista that could shoot broom stick sized arrows ,,, when my pops came home ,,,,🤬🤬🤬 are you out of your gd mind ,,,,,,yep 😂
Please assemble my FREE ENERGY design better
I hate how in the business of movie making and prop work, everything is always a fake-out. It _looks_ like they built a giant ballista with literal tons of draw weight, but nope, it's an elastic band powered thing to make it look the part without actually building in the capability.
Shit just watched duck tape island, from my watch later,
01:05 That crossbow is absolutely useless. There's no tension at all. If you "dryfire" a real crossbow, there's a high chance of something breaking. That's how much tension there is.
It's a prop for a TV show. It isn't supposed to be useful as a weapon.
1:20 That thing looks terrible. The limbs are a weird mix of a casted look with machine finishing, causing the whole thing to end up looking like it is made from aluminium. The cocker looks like it's made of stainless or has been chromed. The wood has been painted, not stained and sealed. Is that blue infil supposed to be a dragon head? Why is it facing the shooter? And the red just looks dumb.
If only he said it wasn’t finished
Have you seen it on TV yet???
Come on it looks like plastic, oil or something maybe
Ah maybe went to early 2min in
I haven't watched any TV or movies since 2015. But all i hear is how horrible the house of the dragon season 2 is. Waste of time to watch garbage.
Yes, all of it is complete garbage. I havent watched TV since I threw it out in 2010
Well…you’re hearing wrong. It was a good, well written and well acted, subtle show that unfortunately had its season finale cut so fans were left . It’s a far subtler, slower, quieter show than GoT and there’s just a lot of fans from that who are having a tantrum that it’s not the exact show they wanted it to be.
such BS how they ended the show...
