    Formerly a hotel built in the early 1900, this Upper West Side studio has been completely transformed into a bright and stylish contemporary home full of space-saving design tricks where a couple can comfortably cook and entertain. Drawing inspiration from the Parisian Beaux-arts style of the building, the team at NYC Design Studio Duro Deco added various arched frames and curves to create a sense of height and space, softening the edges and enhancing the flow of the home. Moving the kitchen into the living space created one large open living area. The clever addition of a custom made ‘Murphy Table’ to fit in a 4 seater dining area folds neatly up onto the wall and appears like an artwork when not in use. The materials used in the kitchen have been thoughtfully selected to reflect light from the large window across the room, whilst a frosted glass bathroom door allows light from the bathroom window to filter through to the rest of the apartment.

    The maximisation of natural light was the selling point for me. From the living room window to reflecting it on the kitchen cupboards and even the frosted bathroom door, it makes the apartment feel much more airy and bright. The arches too give a wonderful cozy feeling. The table doubling up as an artwork was genius! The open space in front of the apartment is a huge plus. Didn’t understand the piece of glass that was hung over the sofa, it reflected the TV. What was it?

    • @aHIGHasian
      @aHIGHasian 2 роки тому +12

      Its an antiqued mirror.
      Yeah, it'll reflect the TV when watching TV, but I'm pretty sure no one is going to focus on how cohesive the mirror's reflection relates to the room when you're watching your show/movie. The focus would be on the TV. Once off, it reflects light towards what would otherwise be a darker face of the room. Look at the sideview at 2:35, it's already darker than the wall to the right even with the light bouncing off the mirror.

      Did you see the Spanish apartment that Kirsten visited last week? The toilet was in the entryway- open to the whole apartment. You could achieve a little privacy from the kitchen by sliding the spice rack over to partially block the view. The countertop folded down across the opening to the foyer/loo. If mother had a pie crust rolled out when you need a poo, you had to crawl under the countertop to get to it 🤣

      I'm actually going to say the opposite and comment two major practical flaws if I were to live there
      1. Tv size is way too small
      2. The tv placement is way too high.
      I'm always surprised how designers are not aware of the second point. Perhaps they are convinced the tv is more of a wall decoration than something you view when sitting down.

    This home is not only beautiful, it's realistic. Sometimes small homes can get too gimmicky or have too many contraptions that are cool but lose their shine after a while. The murphy table they have is cute and functional. Even if they have that table down most of the time, it's not in the way and still looks lovely.
    I think a natural light-wood towel rack in the bathroom would have looked nicer than the chrome one, and it would have tied the bathroom design to the rest of the home a little better. However, I can acknowledge that it might be easier to maintain chrome in a bathroom compared to wood, and it's probably not too hard to take down if they change their mind later on.
    With so much white, this place could have easily been boring, but the designers did a fantastic job at making it serene and peaceful without being washed-out or sterilized-looking. The light-wood accents and the arches really helped make it look clean and open, but still be architecturally interesting.
    Overall, just a beautiful home.

I like that the living room is equally suitable for conversation with guests as it is suitable as a TV room. It is a small space but perfectly big enough to entertain guests. There are very little built-in features, which makes for a less rigid space. Other designs often have so much built-in furniture that everything is screwed into place and you can't move anything around as your needs change.

    This woman is not just an architect, she’s a pure artist! The idea with the “Murphy table” is insane! One of the greatest solutions I have EVER seen for a small space! Absolutely wonderful and as many have already commented, the flat looks much bigger than 33 sqm! Very light and airy. I am obsessed with the bathroom door letting the light in, it’s so narrow and beautiful, I would get it for myself in a heartbeat.
    This is artistry. Thank you for showing us.

    Beautifully done. As a NYC resident, this was greatly appreciated. To see how architects would maximize a dwelling in the capital of small space urban living was inspiring. Thank you for posting!

      @@lindatrandesign If you renovate in NYC costs 200-400 per sqft so this would be up to 140000

    Such a beautiful example of how we can re-use excisting, historical buildings in our big cities and make them into modern, liveable spaces.
    This is so well designed, with unique details and a genius way of useing the outdoor light.
    Thank you for sharing 🙏

    The use of curved lines is really nice: makes me feel relaxed and plus, makes the apartment bigger.
    The table is really a piece of art, when it's closed and there is the bench underneath, seems like you're in a modern museum.

    The white interior makes this place look super clean, neat, and easy to the eyes but the arches design definitely make it feel more homey instead of feeling like a room no one lives in. I probably would have installed some kind of partition between the bedroom and the living room though, since people might come to the house and all. Favorite is definitely the bathroom, from the door design, to the walls, everything is just perfect.

      Or they could have put a pocket door behind the storage closet. I’m sure they designed for their clients and if your needs are different, they’ll accommodate and make you happy too!

    Love the design of this space, one of my favorites! Feels spacious, bright, cozy and super efficient.
    The murphy table idea is so brilliant, but having two screws to mount/unmount the leg can be kind of tedious whenever you need to access it multiple times a day. You might even risk loosing the screws. Some sort of built-in locking mechanism to latch/unlatch the leg would really make using the murphy table feel fun and effortless.
    Didn’t get to see how the leg was stored, but I imagine it being done with a metal rod inside the leg to place under the bench with magnets.

    • @PH4RX
      @PH4RX 2 роки тому +8

      Yeah, the setup felt too long for me and it might end up in one position permanently.
      For storage I would even consider going bold and hanging it on the wall next to the table.

    • @GabeWeymouth
      @GabeWeymouth 2 роки тому +10

      They should have used a loop frame, pivoted on the top that folds "out" to act as the leg. It might need to be telescoping to get the height correct, but it would make the transition super easy.
