This is why our cultural glamourizing of college students' stress is disgusting. It's horribly damaging to people and that needs to change.

It's not fair to them at all. In my opinion, learning shouldn't rely on vigorous tests and letter grades and percentages. Considering... Well just look up studies on how stress affects student's abilities to even retain the information they learned in classes. This is a problem that needs urgent attention.

Thank you. I've worked out that I've been spending around 80+ hours a week on my university courses through the pandemic over the last year, and the stress has been insanity-inducing. In the last three weeks, it has become obvious to me that I have hit a wall mentally, I cannot think straight about anything, I cannot remember anything, I cannot communicate with people, I have been treated for depression throughout my life and once again it is reaching a degree of severity that I am very worried about, and I hate to admit it, but I have once again developed a powerful subconscious urge to harm myself (not a conscious will to, but a deep urge to). I had an exam today, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't write anything sensical, it's like my brain has just shut down at this point. I was put on the dean's list last year, I received straight A's, and now I can't do anything. I'm putting in over 80 hours a week, with the stress increasing with each moment that passes as deadlines draw nearer, and I'm left wondering: why is it legal to do to students what is illegal to do to employees? I am nearly working two times the number of hours that an employer can legally demand from their employees in my country, so why how are universities getting away with this when it comes to students like me?? At least employees are compensated. I am essentially paying thousands of dollars to go insane at this point. Yet all the universities out there are talking about mental health crises on their campuses, but then they tell the students that it can all go away if they just go outside for a walk, go see their friends and take a break... When am I supposed to do those things given the amount of work that my courses demand? Even when I force myself to do these things, nothing changes, I just come back and look at how much time I've lost and the stress comes in like a tidal wave.
I was on the dean's list and now I'm a dead man walking, and now I think that university is the worst mistake I have ever made in my life. It has cost me so much, in so many ways. Something needs to change within these institutions, at least within certain fields.

This is my life right now:
    - Wake up
    - attempt school work
    - stress about upcoming due dates, while distracting myself with video games
    - take a nap because I'm tired
    - repeated last 3 steps until 1AM
    - go to bed and check on social media stuff, because I had no time in the day
    - sleep at 2 or 3 AM

Singette à roulettes Me too, I think part of why really getting started, or even continuing on can be difficult for me is because of self-criticism (or something similar). It's like approaching deadlines have to finally push the words out of me, lowering the weird high standard. And, of course, even deadlines can often fail at that.

I have the same problem too, but what works is working on something that I find interesting. You say distracting yourselves with video games, and that's because it's more interesting than school work. But sometimes, I find some school work, like presentations, more interesting than video games.
Basically, try to think of school as more interesting.

I think it's also common for people to mistake high self-control for low stress. Just because I'm not *actually* screaming my head off in public doesn't mean I'm not doing it internally. It only takes consistency and persistence to train yourself to not wear stress or internal freakouts on your face. Balling your hands up or gripping something tightly or picking at something with your fingers often goes unnoticed. My teeth are in bad condition because I grind them all the time unconsciously. I have a dependency on muscle relaxers to get to sleep at all because I'm so physically tense all the time.

I've fucked up my jaw (now I have TMJ) with the clenching my teeth all the time so now it pops painfully sometimes when eating or laughing/yawning. I keep catching myself clenching my teeth throughout the day and it's incredibly difficult to correct, even with the muscle relaxers I'm on

I was really stressed at first, but I found the best way to tackle stress was to make lists, schedule my days, and do work as soon as I got it. The physiological reactions we can have from stress are enormous, and at times seriously debilitating! The increase of cortisol, serotonin and spinal fluid have all been empirically verified when stress levels increase. Having effective coping strategies and appropriate means of recognising stress in ourselves is vital if we are to overcome this issues derived from stress. Another great video, thanks for this!

ah, i was just gonna ask a related question about lower serotonin levels. the whole "perceived poverty" thing overlaps alot with social animals (including humans) being in the low end of social hierarchies. it makes sense that it would make you more stressful (also impulsive and violent) due to the psycho-physiological response to become motivated to climb the latter. at least that's what i've got from jordan peterson.

I'm currently in grade 12 and I go to one of the hardest highshools in Alberta (Alberta is known for having a very hard education system). Before I moved to Canada I lived in Dubai and I would always have a 90% average. When I moved to Alberta it was extremely difficult for me to get used to how different everything Is, especially schools. Most of my marks would range from 65-70% I became extremely depressed and I stressed out everyday and got maximum 5 hours of sleep on a daily basis. I had to learn everything on my own since everything was different and I've only lived here for 3 years. I still find it extremely difficult. Final exams are coming up and I have to write a diploma for every subject. Currently this sesmter I am taking 4 core classes which adds onto my stress even more. I feel like throwing up everyday and I truly try my best but I feel like the energy has been sucked on of my life and I haven't been able to function properly. I went on anxiety meds to calm me down but that hasn't done a thing. Coming from an Arab background I feel the pressure to impress everyone with my marks. I cry everyday about the possibility of not getting accepted to universities because they have high average rates and I never wanted to die so badly before. I try my absolute best but words don't even make sense to me anymore. I have to read a page atleast 10 times for it to get into my head. I've been depressed for 3 years nd having many panic attacks and I am sleep deprived af. My relationship with everyone around me sucks because I am not the same person anymore. What do i do ???? I haven't had the chance to breathe I never take a break from school what the hell do I do. I feel dumb and worthless. Everyone around me makes it seem like life depends on the grades you take and I can't live that way. the school I go to is extremely hard it's very difficult for me because I'm new to this ! Whatever you decide to do, will be a breeze compared to what you are putting up with. And you are one of the smarter ones. What of the average student. How can they cope. ??. Can we get over the idea that stress response is "fight or flight"? There are 5 Fs...
"Freeze" (self-explanatory) is another response that's been well-documented and accepted by most/many since the 90s. "Friend" is another response. It's what babies to do when stressed-cry to get a caregiver, then coo, make faces, or grab at them to form a relationship. When someone is scared, they might instinctively grab someone's hand and when they're feeling overwhelmed, they might seek physical or verbal affection to feel better. "Flop" is the least-well-known, and it describes when the body and mind yield to the threat. A person's body goes limp and their mind goes offline, so to speak (dissociate). For example, a child of an abusive parent might adopt this tactic if they can't fight, they know running/hiding (flight) will make their eventual abuse worse, friend tactics have failed, and freezing does nothing to protect them.
The flop response is an unfortunately misunderstood coping mechanism and I think it's important to talk about because understanding this lessens victim blaming in cases of abuse (of all types, on humans of all ages).

Another component to preventing stress and tension is to build a strong immune system for the body. How do we do this? A) Proper nutrition is essential. Fresh, pure foods are the best. Avoid processed and heavy foods. Have a combination of all spices (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent and spicy). Sip warm to hot water, especially in the morning.

I highly recommend quitting all social media. You don’t need it, contrary to what you may tell yourself. I just turned 20, doing undergrad work at school. It’s changed my life
I can’t help but feel sorry for the people who consider social media “a part” of their daily routine. Social media is absolutely disgusting, it’s a hot pot of unoriginality, implicit popularity contests and infestations of “anxiety n depressed ‘cause it’s meme and aesthetic” culture. Absolute garbage, it’s unoriginal and unfunny and does nothing to better your poor little overworked bodies. You really don’t need all that. You’ll start to notice the world more. You’ll start to learn how to practice gratefulness and appreciate your everyday mess in the time you would have spent staring at somebody else’s accomplishments and posts. -Yes, appreciation for your life is extremely, -eemly, EEEMLY possible. A UA-cam video or inspirational post won’t do it, though. Little will I. It’s on you, man, so put down that meme and go discover yourself.
If you’re dealing with stress and anxiety, I heavily recommend chucking your services.
(Just before I get any pointer fingers stuck in my direction and or up my nose - UA-cam is the only service I use, and that’s for music. Yippie!)

Hank, I can't believe you left out the most important way to reduce stress: exercise. Everyone should exercise at least 20 minutes a day. It increases blood flow to the brain, reduces stress, blood pressure and can even make you feel better by releasing endorphins. I can NOT emphasize enough how important exercise is to one's life. Social interactions and laughter also help with reducing stress. And so do listening to music, reading, meditation and masturbation.

When you're stressing you can put it in one of two categories:
      - you can't influence it. In this case there is no reason to stress because it's not gonna help you anyway
      - you can influence it. In this case there is no reason to stress because you can change the outcome to your liking.

I like to run things that stress me out through the "Will This Kill Me" test. It def helped me calm down over exam stress and changed the way I think about stress. It asks, does the thing I'm stressed out about -
    Stop me from eating?
    Stop me from drinking?
    Stop me from sleeping?
    Stop me from breathing?
So, something like, say, a bear is something to freak out over. But a test or exam can't jump up and kill me, so it's probably not worth stressing out over. The motti is, if it doesn't pose a direct physical threat, it's not worth getting too worked up over.

Im judt watching this vid bc idk how im feeling rn.. i keep doubting if its stress or im just over thinking.
My parents work all day so i didnt really talk much to them. I have a older brother who i talked to a lot and did all that relatable sibling things. But last year we had a silly fight and bc if that we stopped talking and now we can actually talk to each other but its not the same as it used to be. During quarantine i used to be at my phone 24/7 so i lost all my social skills even with my own family. Rn whenever my brother passes me or sits in the same room as me, i dont talk him. I just sit silent watching my mobile.. and i feel 'something' like maybe nervous when im talking to my mother while my brother is sitting right next to her. IT JUST HAPPENED AND I FELT SO NEEVOUS OR SOMETHING ELSE THAT I CANT EXPRESS.
The whole time during that convo i was trying not to cry and once the convo ended and i came back to my room i started crying silently.. i keep thinking back if i was getting stressed at that moment cuz i had lost my social skills and became an introvert. Or im just overthinking.. haha
I wrote this whole ass para just cuz im still not over that feeling
