- More people have been to the moon than to the ocean’s Twilight Zone. Why is it so hard to get there, and why do these scientists want to go?
Experience intense, unique, and sometimes dangerous moments with scientists working in the field, as they explain first-hand the kinds of risks they take to find answers. There's so much more to being a scientist than being stuck in a lab. Watch every Friday for new episodes of Science in the Extremes.

That underwater notebook though
4:00 "What da ****, its a new species ! new species right here." That is NOT how I imagined scientists react to a new discovery.
But, they're...
People.
what kind of "people" kidnap animals?
mike jones IT'S FOR SCIENCE!!!1!!1
mike jones, just remember that mist kidnaps are done by people themselves.
HAHAHAHAHAH
"One of a dozen divers with enough expertise to visit the Twilight Zone, a place you don't want to visit alone"
Umm... diving in general is something you *never* do alone. Like... ever.
It didn't state anything different, you still don't want to visit it alone lol
"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."
*cue Twilight Zone theme*
"It's A Good Life" in "The Eye of The Beholder" who is the one that is here "To Serve Man" it is quite "The Encounter" in "The Midnight Sun" also, I just realised that I'm a mannequin...
Fiery Kitsune I love those shows but I think they took that channel of the TV witch sucks
I love how excited that diver was when he found that new species :)
"they're so rarely studied that we could be in danger of losing them before we fully understand them" great just great ... i love hearing great news like these... really fucking brightens my day....
fml
NakedAvanger stfu 😊
You know your Wi-Fi is trash when it buffers at 144p.
I wonder if the fish they capture 400 feet below the surface need to be given some type of special treatment when they are brought into the labs on the ship, if they want the fish to survive?
The diver's will have to bring containers down as the the fish are always being pressed together in those depths and their bodies have adapted to survive the immense pressure but their bodies hadn't adapted to the shallow depths so if they swam close to the surface they would turn to smoosh.
the containers are pressurized every three meters so that the fish can get use to the decompression the of their bodies.
The container is full of water to it's sealed lid when the fish is captured in it. The pressure within the vessel should remain pretty close to the same all the way to the surface. If it is a plastic there will be a certain amount of stretching but so long as the lid remains sealed the water can't expand, however the amount of oxygen in that small a space of water can't be that high.
If they have a hyperbaric chamber on board they could be opened in there to oxidize the water...just a thought.
Keith Durant ...that makes sense! Thank you
I T ' S T I M E TO A S C E N D
Everyone here talking about marine biology. And I'm here simply amazed at the production output done so professionally! Well done!
And now Golden Earring and Rod Serling is stuck in my head...
How do they spend those 90 minutes 😱
Hawra Ali Raza chilling
Hawra Ali Raza Fappin
Hawra Ali Raza Underwater charades.
They play Go Fish.
When your favourite channel drops a video about extreme diver the same day you get your diving licence
Under the sea! Under the sea!
great video, also great to see units I understand:3
Can they use a robot diver to help collect?
I can't see why not
@Eric Hung lmao
4:16 Damn... I'm such a child and I love it lmao
This refresh of the channel makes me long for the discovery channel, my entire life I have watched the discovery channel and though I gave up cable 10+ years ago it is one of, if not the only draw I have to getting a package again. I just have no desire for cable otherwise. I'm happy to rediscover this channel as the name change passed me by and I didn't like the name seeker so I haven't watched any content. Shout out to Amy, she is a peach and it looks like she has done some voice training. It's nothing compared to her getting excited while regaling encounters with astronaut's, but her voice is perfect for this.
I once studied marine biology as my course but then I failed chemistry so I Shifted to hotel management HUEHUE!
Pablo Tejano Hotel? Trivago.
Most interesting and the life shown was really neat. Yes. On a deep dive, you have to ascend very slowly to prevent the developed of decompression sickness also known as the bends.
I love scooba diving thanks for the video seeker
I don't know what could be the reason for these 12 people to dislike this video!
Some say if you go there during a full moon you may catch a glimpse of the illusive Rod Serling
Man this makes me miss scuba even more
Awesome guys! But cant they do the same and safer with a diving robot/little drone submarine which are used in the deep ocian?
3:48 when the expedition goes just right.
One of the few regrets in my life is not having learned to dive.
"few regrets"? not learning to dive? count your lucky stars, blessed one.
why are there so many people that i see on essentially all the videos i watch
You're not dead yet.
Woopa Geeks attract geeks, all these sciencey channels (seeker, vsauce, scishow, kurzgesagt etc.) have pretty much the same subscribers and commenters across the board. Not to mention the formula for having a highly liked (i.e. top of the list) comment is pretty much standard (the punny joke, etc.) It's understood and perfected by those same people through practice, so naturally you'll see them more often.
you are lucky one.
WHen i dive i always think, that it could be my last dive.. Deeper you go, more dangerous it becomes. And im only 23 xD
I have a question, do you need to decompress going down? Or can you go down decently fast to how long it takes to go up? I free dive and have to deal with pressure but I don’t understand it at such insane depths 🤯
would it not be compressing as you go down? static pressure increases as you descend so you would want higher pressure in your air system so you could breathe in with ease as the hydrostatic pressure from the surrounding water would be pushing in on yourself, also super cool that you free dive, I want to try that one day
You unlock this door with the key of imagination. beyond it, is another dimension. not only of sight and sound, but of mind you've just entered The Twilight Zone.
Salute to these guys for science
3:15 WTF!
??
how is he writing underwater lol
It's an old technology...it's called a pencil.
a special pen (the same one as the use in space)
a those pressures graphite should turn into diamond ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Exciting work
What about using a one man or small sub? guessing probably too expensive, but doubt any of that is cheap either.
Scary but amazing to see this
Great production
Can't they just use underwater drones to go that deep? I'm sure I'm missing something but tasks observing terrain, collecting samples or even catching species could be carried out by robots, right?
Ah, the bends. You experience this when you deep dive to Titanic’s sister ship the HMHS Britannic off the coast of Greece.
Thank you, I'm interested!
Those guys are amazing.
is it possible to send drones at those depths? if possible, why don't they just send drones to serch there?
Wireless signals e.g. radio don't travel well underwater.
bobbyofbrunei That's easy to circumvent by simply not making the drone wireless.
James Rae then there is the issue of the wires, the longer the wire, the heavier it becomes, and then there is the issue of snagging it on rocks or other things in the water.
bobbyofbrunei Research submarines almost all use wire for power and tubes for circulation, and those go much deeper than 400 ft.
The thrill of being there in person is exhilarating!
"It's A Good Life" in "The Eye of The Beholder" who is the one that is here "To Serve Man" it is quite "The Encounter" in "The Midnight Sun" also, I just realised that I'm a mannequin...
wow that's so cool
What do they do with the new species they collect?
There's gold and gems there also
"Wuh uh huck?" Hahaha
lol i laughed when he said "What the f****"
The twilight zone doesn’t start until 656 feet below.
That Twilight Zone is located in Verde Island Passage in the Philippines. That place is also considered as the Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity. And they discovered a hundred new species including Heart Orchin (living fossil)
www.calacademy.org/press/releases/scientists-discover-more-than-100-new-marine-species-in-the-philippines-during
Interesting video! However, there are far more than a few divers who are capable of reaching that depth. (Though almost none of them are scientist)
incredible
The narrator said the twilight zone is less visited than the moon? Do they mean less explored? Only a dozen people have walked on the moon and this video alone shows at least five divers including the camera person visiting the twilight zone in one dive. Maybe they're talking about time on the seabed vs time on the moon surface? Either way, I think maybe they mean the hadal zone or the abyssal zone. That's more believable.
"What the F***" lmao
Please do more report-style videos like this one
Someone get these guys a sub >.>
Makes me want to make a career change
Is it necesary to grab the new species fish?....
Nice. One of these guys is son of neighbor!
The depths interest and terrify me.
Somebody please design something so that we don't have to keep dealing with this nitrogen nonsense.
Why not use unmanned subs to study the twilight?
It's harder to control a robot arm than taking samples with your hands. At least that's what I think.
Probably costs more too...
3:17 HOW IS HE WRITING UNDERWATER?
they are heroes. 👏
They can use drones
*The Midnight Zone is next.......*
i wonder if anyone has Ever gone made a Base In the twilight zone
interesting
Y no submarine?
I thought i saw in the title;Dieing into the twilight zone
Me: ... isnt this appropriate For kids
*Watches the video*
Me:Ohhhh.........
Diving drunk.. damnit why does that sound so cool is ti coz Di+dr=2x D starts.. or coz oimagination..or syncronization o f both cooln esses.damn
WHATTHE FAHHAHAHAHA
bet they poo n pee while they wait decpmresion xd
Noooo
who chose that font?!
Why not use a submarine or drones?
3:58 that guy is wearing a shirt
I thought it was the other Twilight Zone
I like seeker.
Herro pree
waitaminute ... _gloveless dives_ ... at _400 feet_ ... *on a research mission!?!?!* that's either completely bullshit, or completely batshit :-\
So lucky
400 feet?
Please remember that (nearly) the entire rest of the world doesn't use feet.. >.>
They should just take a submarine...
yeah but its not as fun !
Who's going to fund it?
Let the robots do that!
Robots don't need to decompress.
They talk like kenny from southpark 😂
Why not design better hardsuits?
damnit i expected more ppl to coment on that wataf .. but .. no1 coments it ;/ around 04 00 wher ethey say W T F ;d. screw iti wont watch a coments thenl.al*
Does this title reminds anyone of the awful times when "twilight" was everywhere?
Tell Me This it reminds me of the twilight zone tuturutu
No, it doesn't.
Angel Blackhorse ye it dose
Tell Me This Yes, "The Twilight Zone" that was hosted by Rod Sterling (sp) back in the 60's.
Yeas
Umm special science sub? 0_o
is this Vox?
os !!
seals can go deeper
but so beautiful my dad was a hard hat diver he loved the sea s
They are not in twilight zone, twilight zone is so dark and scary, sun doesnt reach there
Heroes
why cant they send robots down there?
You know the world scuba record is about 1100 feet, just saying.
BOI just go down in a sub
leave the fish alone
I noticed there kept in captivity
Wtf, a new species😂
First
Why don’t you sent robotics to film ? U r doing this to collect and monitor and not live in there!!!we r at 2017 !!!
