  • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution oceanographer Andone Lavery and her team of scientists and engineers have created the ultimate tool for exploring the largest, least known habitat on Earth-the Ocean Twilight Zone, a layer of the ocean beyond all but the dimmest sunlight. What they find might change our understanding of deep-ocean life. Enter the twilight zone here: twilightzone.whoi.edu/

    It makes me FURIOUS that there are fishing vessels exploiting this zone. Genuinely just disgusting.

    Very informative video, fascinating actually-who knew? Is it possible to declare the Twilight Zone a World Class Historical Site or even an Ocean National Park? Don’t laugh, in Laguna Beach, CA., we created a natural ocean park area that helped keep oil platforms from our distant shores. Congratulation on your success and research.

    This was a really awesome short film! It was incredibly interesting to see how the science is done and how many precautions there are when deploying such a valuable instrument. Do you also collect seafloor bathymetry on these missions?

    • @jejebah
      @jejebah 4 роки тому

      So glad you liked the film! Very often bathymetry is collected on these cruises, but I do not believe that was done on this particular cruise. You'd have to ask Andone though.

    I wonder how that particular location was selected among numerous others. Was it a random choice? The Alvin Canyon may be quite extense.

      You would have to ask the scientists, but my understanding is that the site was selected because it was well-known, and it was the shortest distance from Newport to the shelf break, which is where we can enter twilight zone depths.

    How are these small and microscopic marine organisms, as featured in this film, and that exist at these depths, marketable?

    • @christopherbassett9810
      @christopherbassett9810 4 роки тому +2

      My understand is that the commercial markets for smaller organisms is primarily limited to products like fish oil and fish meal. Markets exist for other small organisms like krill.

      Ah yes, because rushing to learn about ocean life before that life is gone is politics.
