"Dorset perception" is a first Shponle's song I've ever heard. It was 20 years ago and it's still my favorite one, because of this solo. Pure beauty. You don't have to play a guitar to enjoy every second of this video.
I remember melting my head trying to get this solo, and i did it a few years ago, back and forth i keep coming back to this song and play it so i wouldnt never forget how amazing this is.
One of the top GOAT guitar solos. I remember playing this with the homies during a few "special occasions" back in the day and being blown away every time. Majestic, as if god came down from the heavens and laid down a guitar solo. Excellent work bro
Wow, I can't believe there are lesson videos for these Shpongle guitar parts! The guitar parts have always been one of my favorite parts of Shpongle and it's awesome to see the man responsible. To get some insight into the musical thinking behind them is just a dream come true. Thanks Pete!
I always thought this solo was composed as opposed to inprovised, everything sounds so intentional and well thought of. Makes it all the more impressive that you actually improvised this. 😅
I've shed tears for this solo during my dorset perceptions :'o , cant believe i learnt this, thank you for teaching this masterpiece, your essence of music is unique and pshponglefull!!!! ...... And spiritual !!!!!!!
It makes perfect sense it was improvised, the solo is an extension of such a flowy vibe of the tune. You brilliantly managed to capture the small ripple-taking-over-the-whole-lake feel. Thank you so much for the info, guitar work and well produced tutorial. Amazing stuff sir.
I learned this off youtube covers years ago, but holy cow there were so many notes hiding in there that they missed! I'm just getting into theory now and I really appreciate you sharing your process for creating each phrase of this solo, to me it feels incredibly rare for a guitarist to craft a great solo and also explain how they did it, thanks so much for your work!
scintillating, interesting and perfect solo for the piece, loads if good ideas within this solo to get into your own playing. Great to hear Petes licks, great fusion of ideas
Just bought you a coffee :) Im doing a pseudo cover of this song for the final performance of my degree. Happy to support the info, I know its tough being a musician right now. Cheers man :)
Brilliant Pete! i am writing a dance tune which also uses phrygian harmony so dusted off the old flamenco guitar and was noodling around and remembered the E-F progression i learned by ear all those years ago but didnt quite remember the voicings so found your 2 lessons on it - excellent! i remember seeing some comment online as well 'saying for the solo soem frenzied noodling in e phrygian should suffice' - thogh watching these i can appreciate that a lot more consideration has applied in note selection! Thanks again :)
Brilliant as usual ! and would you look at that , you're almost at 1,000 subs and the main riff is now your most viewed lesson with 372 likes and ZERO dislikes ! channel growth is going nicely ! and Raj telling you his vision was fun haha ! highly anticipating the next shpongle lesson :P Cheers Pete !
Amazing solo, especially considering it was improvised.. First time in a while I’m actually learning something without looking for tabs and gotta say you did a really good job going over every part in detail.
Hi Pete only just found out shpongle new ep is out I popped my head out of the rabbit hole and there it was... You’ve done it again with dr vinlkestein What you playing on that It’s shpongle meets the baghdaddies Respect
Thanks Jay, glad you like it. That‘s a mad piece Simon wrote on piano for the Red Rocks gigs a couple of years ago that we all added our parts to. I can’t remember what they ended up using but I brought various strange instruments to the session. I love the klezmer clarinet lines on there
@@PeteCallard it is challenging to say the least. However there is help having the Ableton Push as one can replicate the G# B E top string E riff easier than using a keyboard because of the Push having multiple pads for the same note. If that makes sense😁
Hi Pete, awesome video. Thanks for the play and demonstration! Just out of curiosity, did you do the guitar session work on Falling Awake from Nothing Lasts But Nothing Is Lost? If so, I'd love to see a video on that song! Many thanks again.
Thanks very much, so glad you enjoyed it! Yes - Falling Awake is a track I came up with in the studio when we were recording Connoiseur of Hallucinations that ended up closing the album. All the guitar parts on Shpongle tracks are either me or Simon, and all the solos are me
@@PeteCallard No worries. This is really wonderful to read, thank you so much. Falling Awake was probably my biggest inspiration for me to pick up the guitar. I had first listened to the song when I was very young (8 years old I believe) and that track made me realize the infinite possibilities of what could happen when it came to music making. Using the classical guitar as a lead and the steel string guitar as the backing guitar blew my 8 year old mind because I didn't know you could do that (or that it was allowed at all, hah!).
That’s very humbling to read, thank you! It’s a nice track, I’m glad people like it. My solo on Falling Awake was a single take without any edits, which was a first for Simon I think, but I thought it was important to keep the spontaneity of it, warts and all
if I undeerstood correctly you improvised this solo with shpongle but you transcribed it note for note for this lesson? Because I hear the exact solo from the album when you play it in this video
Thanks Jay! It’s not a Santa Fe - it calls itself an EN-60C, I got it back in the 90s. Glad you like Falling Awake, that was something I came up with in the studio when we were recording that full track that closes the album. There’s stuff I’d change, but the whole. ‘Connoisseur...’ to the end of the album is one of my favourite Shpongle tracks
@@PeteCallard thanks for replying Pete I’ve since looked and a Santa Fe is steel strung 🤭It was the rosette that backtracked me to Santa Fe Very first time I heard falling awake The tone..and song hooked me And seeing it played by you on that guitar is brilliant thanks My best nylon I have is a giannini gwn I dabble with a bit of bossa and have sort of dissected falling awake

Can you do this with When shall I be free? Your performance of that song on Live at the Roundhouse from 2008 is just amazing. I got the main parts down but there's stuff I'm struggling with and so many small bits that are hard to decypher.
I am into the guitar world for decades and this is in my top 3 solos EVER. Magical

I love Raj's vision of the solo! I also appreciate these videos. Gonna practice some Dorset Perception when no one's listening ::: )
