    Great job Pete. 2 friends of mine used to travel down to Philly from NYC to take lessons with Pat....

    Really great content, Pete. Watching your DAW recording audio zoomed in behind you is analogous to how my brain feels with all the analysis coming at me!

      😂 Thanks Andy - I never intend to have that zoomed in, but always discover too late that I’ve forgotten again!

    The ii V I in Ab lines over for the ii V I changes in Db makes a lot of sense, if he's doing like what Larry Carlton does, in playing triad notes from the V chord over the I chord. Never thought of it that way, and what a cool sound!

    • @PeteCallard
      @PeteCallard  2 роки тому +1

      It is a cool sound isn’t it - I’d be fascinated to know whether it’s intentional or he forgot the changes, but either way it works

      Mr. Pat Martino was 77 when he died Nov. 1, 2021, in Philadelphia, at the same rowhouse where he had spent part of his childhood. The cause was a chronic respiratory disorder.
      The master is now at rest.

      It’s just a transcription of this lick, not the whole solo, but if you click on the buymeacoffee link then click on Extras, you’ll find it there

    hi Pete, really nice lesson!
    I have a question for you.. is tour right hand technique alternate picking or economy picking?

    Why does the c melodic minor work over a c-7? Doesn’t the flat 7 clash with the major 7?

    • @PeteCallard
      @PeteCallard  Рік тому +1

      It does clash, but not in a serious way (eg like a major 3rd on a minor chord), and those sort of dissonant sounds are part of the language of jazz

      Thank you, this has always been my favorite solo from pat but looking at the transcriptions always confused me a bit; I’m still trying to get the hang of non diatonic tones in jazz

    • @PeteCallard
      @PeteCallard  Рік тому

      Yeah, it takes a while to get your head, ears & fingers around it!

  • @Marcimusic257

    Great stuff! With your picking hand, is anything besides the pick making contact with the guitar?

    • @PeteCallard
      @PeteCallard  Рік тому +1

      Thanks man! I guess my arm is resting on the top of the body, and the bottom of the palm brushes/ mutes the strings. I also sometimes use my picking hand fingers

    • @Marcimusic257
      @Marcimusic257 Рік тому

      @@PeteCallard Your technique is great! I've seen a few players use only the arm on the guitar body, with just the pick contacting the strings, and a completely floating right hand. It's pretty difficult, but seems really freeing if mastered.

    • @PeteCallard
      @PeteCallard  Рік тому +1

      Thanks very much! That’s a good approach, although tricky to crop unwanted strings ringing out on distorted sounds

    Of course it’s entirely possible that some of the unusual note choices are actually mistakes! No one seems to consider this option. Believe me, even Pat Martino played made occasional mistakes but at his level he could move on without it stopping the flow.

  • @davidsheriff9274

    Pat actually solos on the wrong changes. Instead of playing a 2 5 to D flat,he plays a 2 5 to A flat.

      I tried to put it more diplomatically in the analysis!

    • @Faz99Master
      @Faz99Master 3 місяці тому

      That’s ridiculous. That II-V in Ab is totally plausible and Pat chose to play it that way.
