DJI RONIN 4D vs RED Komodo - Side-by-Side image quality comparison.

  • PLEASE NOTE : this is the second version of the video. The first version I posted was from a bad render and that might have affected your opinion. Sorry for that. Thanks for the feedback so I can see that something is actually wrong.
Many of you ask me about the quality of recorded footage from Ronin 4d, unfortunately I don't have the equipment for a scientific test, so I decided to make the simplest comparison I could think of. I built Rig on which I've managed to put ronin 4d and Red komodo so you can compare two cameras side by side and decide for yourself which one is better or maybe both are equally good.
Please remember this is not a full camera test but only a comparison of the quality of the recorded image, without any color correction or creative post-production. All I did was apply LUTs to the RAW files (DJI Log to Rec 709 & Red Lut Log 3G10 to Rec 709)
If you think this DJI Ronin 4D vs RED Komodo camera comparison is disappointing, let me know in the comments, I'll try to do something more interesting in the future, however, I hope it can be helpful to someone.

Hey Adam, thanks heaps.. I swapped camera preference from clip to clip.. I think either is great on its own.. but with all the stabilization and extras supplied with the 4D, to me it's the winner..

Watched the older version and this one and still prefer the majority of the shots from the Ronin 4D. I'm not a professional colorist or anything of the sort so this is just the "eye test." Initial reviews of the camera left me with a mixed feeling about purchasing because the image quality seemed lackluster but after watching this I'm definitely getting the Ronin. The global shutter on the RED really makes a difference in those quick panning tests. Thanks Adam and keep the Ronin content coming.

@@the180degreerule3 very! Had it not been for the name "RED" you probably would not be in such dismay, I get it. As I said, I'm not a professional, maybe you are, I do currently own a Canon C70 and I prefer what I'm seeing in the Ronin except in the baby and woman shot, and even then, the difference isn't miles apart. So in the end, you do what works for you and I'll do what works for me. Have a great day sir/mam.

THE180DEGREERULE the ronin 4D looks better in just about every way. I was shocked . This was the final test needed to confirm I will be going down the route of DJI RONIN 4D for our next cinema camera. Just can’t justify the expense of a Komodo or UMP 12k when this offers so much more bang for buck and internal recording features than everything else in its class. Showing DJI have once again reset the paradigm on what will be accepted as standard in the industry.

You might want to do the eye test again. You can't fix the 4D color vs the Komodo. No colorist can adjust the 4D color to match the Komodo. Watch the color between the two cameras when they show the Komodo image cut into the 4K image of the 4D. Look at the mid tone and shadow color of the trees between both cameras.

Thanks for the updated video! The footage from the Komodo looks better than it did in the other version for sure. They're both obviously great cameras. The magenta shift on the Komodo is really strong when you compare them and there's still a little bit of weirdness in some of the highlights (clouds) etc. from what I can see, but I assume if you shoot with this camera a lot you know that beforehand and adjust when grading. The 4D's image seems to be a bit more rich/color accurate in the early shots, but some of the shots inside (the baby in particular) it feels like the Komodo is a more immediately pleasing image. The choppiness of the 4D during the 120 fps test on the waves early on doesn't seem consistent with other slow motion footage I've seen, though, so I'm curious as to why that's happening. Also in the quick pan shots testing the rolling shutter vs global shutter it seems like the 4D has a smoother image, even with the slight warp? Like the RED's global shutter actually comes across looking choppier.
The night time stuff is really stark in the differences, though I'd probably want to see the 4D at its native ISO of 5000 here instead of 1600 before making a real judgment. The Komodo does not seem to handle the sodium vapor from those lights very well. All in all, though, I think the whole point here is if your footage ends up looking bad or your work is uninteresting, it won't be either camera's fault 😉

The skintones looks now way better on the Ronin4D compared to the previous version. The Komodo has still a better dynamic range. You can see it in the eye socket of the womans face. The shadows are falling softer.
But the Ronin4D is really impressive. Mark II could be a very serious competitor in the future. The setup needs to be lighter, smaller and schould handle 1,5 kg lenses. In that case Canon,Sony and RED should getting really nervous.

One thing to take into account is that although the 24mm and 35mm are from the same family, they were released at different times and the 35mm has a much better optical quality than the 24mm. I have tested this and also read it in forums. So it.s a slight advantage for the Ronin, which stills, amazes

Agreed. 24mm Rokinon is horrible until stopped way down. 24mm has soft edges and strange glow when opened up plus just not usable until a 2.8 typically. 35mm is much better. Not a fair comparison. Better to use two Zeiss or two Leicas or anything newer except Samyang 😑

Overall I find the default color rendering of the 4D more pleasing. The Komodo leans hard into the yellows at times and the magenta in some of the outdoor shots is over the top. At the same time, the Komodo captures much more color detail compared to the 4D, where the DJI often looks a bit muted. Bottom line, the 4D holds its own in this image quality comparison (depending on the visual style you plan to shoot), and as an all-in-one, jump out of the car and start shooting package, the 4D can be a flexible tool (within its limited lens range), but when you need to work with bigger glass, the 4D looks like a kludgey mess and I don’t have confidence the mount and particularly the gimbal will stand up to the strain of holding cine lenses, no matter how well the support system is rigged.

The footage from the Komodo has more accurate colors and motion cadence, but the Ronin overall is much more flexible of a camera rig and I think more useful in more applications. If you're shooting a single camera drama, go with the Komodo. If you're shooting action, or music videos/commercials I'd go with the Ronin. But really, $7k gets you a full camera system, including a gimbal and lidar focus.

Tired of people not doing the Red justice on UA-cam. You are losing so SO much dynamic range by using lower iso outside. 800 or 1600 and ND down to retain those highlights. I think the DJI looks good but next to whatever garbage you made the Red into alters the viewers perspective. It instantly makes me question your abilities, almost as if you're trying to make the camera look way worse than it actually is.

Samyang has sharp lenses, but the color fidelity is really inconsistent between their lenses. I once used 2 copies of the 24mm and one had a very green cast and lots of vignetting while the other one had a deeper bluish cast. If you stick with Samyang / Rokinon, it might be better to do this test with the same lens on both cameras. Or, you could use higher quality glass. Canon, Sigma, Zeiss, and Leica are all much more consistent in color across lenses, even though the vignetting will vary.

I wouldn't use the Komodo for it's 120p - mushy and pretty average. It's global shutter doesn't feel like as much an advantage. If some lens manufacturers can support the Ronin 4D with purpose built lenses as some kind of partnership, I think this could be REAL nice. • @billiampotter
      @billiampotter 2 роки тому +1

320 iso outside is why. He's losing a solid stop and a 3rd in the highlights by having a lower iso shooting raw outside. The way the r3d codec is designed to put it simply, is iso is light sensitivity. It doesn't alter the amount of dynamic range, just where it is placed. You're supposed to expose with aperture and ND, if you're outside 800 or 1600 iso then nd down to get a proper middle gray.
I bet that he's blowing out the red and green channels to get that yellow blown out highlight looks as well because of the lack of ND used.
