The beautiful language of camera, as in this video, is how to use a tool correctly for a scene. Having gimbal or shaky cam doesn't make a movie good, but knowing when, how and for what exact duration, is the key. The shake on tension and the stabilization on calm and slow tracking back for some breathing is so perfect. It's the kind of perfect when the audience doesn't notice gear or camera or detail or whatever, but is totally immersed in the scene and that's the language of cinema. Well everything else included, but this is where even Hollywood fucks up sometimes. I recently saw a trailer for a new movie, great image and sound quality and acting and lighting and all, but, camera was constantly, intentionally shaking, even for calm and focus related scenes, watching a group discuss something, but I couldn't even focus because the damn camera felt like operator was too drunk to stand still. This intentional shake just pisses me off every time.
Sorry for the long message, but what you're doing is how it's supposed to be done and you prove every time that its not the equipment that makes a movie good, its how you use it so that we don't feel the equipment at all. This is the secret

Holy crap, I've seen this camera a million times when everyone was reviewing it but that montage was the first time I was convinced it could be used for something which feels so cinematic! I forgot the point of the video was to show off the gear and was just immersed by what it could do, so sick
I thought the same thing until I realized, it's not the camera making the shots look good, it's Ryan's incredible knowledge. Ryan has gone as far as shooting with an iphone in the past to prove that it's not the camera.
That was a crazy awesome location in the beginning 🔥

I was totally wondering when you'd get your hands on one. All the reviews I've heard so far mention a beefier gimbal so it can accept cine lenses. No Film School's podcast mentioned having the focus data as a downloadable file for compositing, and a keyframe system for repeating shots.

The best thing with this camera is the lidar AF. By far the best implementation of AF I’f seen. The camera is interesting but a little strange. I susect it will sell fairly well and then 2nd version is really impressive with everything they learn from this one.
I could see it as a great B or C Cam on production! For gimbal work without having to have another full gimbal and tear a setup down! The LiDAR is wild!
For sure. They could sell that part of the system alone for other cameras and people would pay $6K for that by itself. People already pay more than that for follow focus systems that just drive a motor and do nothing clever.

What lens are you using on the clips when you were inside the abandoned house/warehouse and when you filmed the street, showing the the different shades of lighting in low light?
I do like that hand held look converting into stable shot. It'd be nice in a fighting off a group of people scene and then the good guy wins only to stable the camera to a bigger group of people for him to fight.

Thanks for your review - I have just taken delivery here in the UK of the 8K Ronin 4D combo - it comes with the 17-28mm native zoom lens - just need to learn how to use the Ronin lol. You can get XLR inputs add on module now.
I'm waiting for a full set of lenses to come out with this and I'll consider purchasing this camera. I'm very impressed!
I come back to say that the Ronin 4D has a weight balancer for heavier lenses! I repeat you can use lenses up to 2 pounds with the weight balance that attaches to the back of the head of the lens! I'm amazed by this and WILL be buying this baby in a couple of months!

Wait for the next version which will probably be able to handle large lenses as this one is not the world's most reliable. Cheers

This Video was great because you guys used this camera as a filmmaker would. Most reviews I’ve seen are just UA-camr doing simple stuff and do things that doesn’t show us filmmaker this cameras storytelling abilities and advantages.

I've been thinking about this camera for shooting my first feature. I love how it's everything in one package. For what I want to do on a smaller budget, this would benefit the film very well I think. Thanks for making this video! I've been waiting for you guys to check it out. Also I would love to see that test action scene you talked about shooting with this camera. Since my film is a sci fi action, I would love to see the camera being used in a genre like that.

The lidar alone sounds life changing for 1st ACs. I don’t want auto focus. I prefer my focus being pulled by a person. But the lidar top view eliminates all the guessing that can ruin otherwise good shots. It’s that extra bit of assistance the 1st AC needs and I want it on all the regular cameras I work with.

My name is Austin’ Lidgett I am a digital cinematography student at full sail university, Your youtube page has inspired me in so many ways to become a filmmaker and how to tell a good story. I hope to one day be as good as you are before I get to old lol (I’m 35 now) My only issue is I live in the middle of nowhere, lol, and I’m not sure how to get my foot in the door in the film industry without moving. But I love the idea and hope for similar products or a variant with PL/EF compatibility like the BMPCC and Ursa.
I do wonder how it compares with a sony a7siii usiing catalyst browse post stabilize software (also adding motion blur in post. as you will need to shoot at 1/400th or higher..............or can combine it with a glidecam)

It is such an incredible camera and I hope I don't get hate from saying this and I just want to clarify the actual look of the camera footage is insanely good but I feel like the 4d stabilization could use a tiny bit of work because even in the begging montage I could see the unstablized up and down movements and it definitely handled some shots way better than others. Like the shot through the hole in the wall facing the subject could have definitely been stabilized better. Other than that though what a crazy camera!
Be really interesting of you could you the lidar info for VFX work.
see some ever so slight lateral wobble on foreground areas on few shots. surprising because I never noticed it on earlier footage. I see some of that on my ronin and have never been able to eliminate it. this camera is a forward visionary approach, glad to see them moving in this direction. lidar focus is amazing, when phones came out with lidar I knew it was coming to big rigs. fully ready to rock is closer to 8 grand which still aint bad, but nice that its modular. wondering what V2.0 will bring. great review though, nice shots y'all pulled off. wondering about that SSD any dropped frames? USB3.1? keep on keeping on and have an awesome weekend

£5,659 for the 6K version - to me this is must have camera. As a single camera operator run and gun work will become so much easier and importantly enjoyable. So big 👍 up.

Do you know if with the DJI Zenmuse X9 E-Mount Unit could l use the sony 50mm 1.4f zeiss lens with 780g, ? I am not sure but the with sony 24 mm 1.4 GM lens is posibble ,so l am not sure ,

How does the system turn manual lenses into autofocus lenses? Don't completely manual, not electronic lenses require someone to pull focus?

So it's been nearly a year. Did you end up getting one of these for yourself? How often do you use it? What's your long-term verdict?
On the website it says that Prores 422 HQ won’t be released till a later firmware update. If that’s the case H.264 remains and it’s only 4.2.0. :(

Soooooooo tempting. I have to get away from this camera before I buy it. Wish I could find a low weight macro lens to justify the buy, but attaching and leaving the new GH6 with a light weight macro lens to the Ronin S2 is my solution for now.

Great short. The camera is cool. But personally most of what people do is on a tripod. Outside of some stuff most paid work is on a tripod, most dialogue scenes are on a tripod etc. This camera can't do that. So its too expensive for most to just be a specific use camera. Good to rent, but otherwise not much use. At least in my case. When it comes to adapters, those DOF adapters were great, I hated DSLR's. I despised them. I will always prefer a video camera. I like my camcorder, and not having a second camera to get a few shots here and there was great. Don't get me wrong, there are fantastic interchangeable lens camcorders now. But I still need a fixed lens camera for alotta work. I would love to still be able to have my DOF adapter and my camcorder. I would. Tons of iphone shooters are using DOF adapters now and they are sharper than the letus one I have, I wish they made them for camcorders. What is better, one camera you can adapt to everything, or two cameras? Hmm.
Yeah extra external mic not being XLR it's just wildly bizarre to me, doesn't at least have TRS mini jack I would imagine so my god really seriously or maybe trrs like for stereo mic in the mini, yipes but you know you got to consider it I mean maybe like that the TTL the mini XLR or the mini plug that might be a better way to go and it wouldn't take up nearly as much room as the XLR and you think about it to get XLR on something it does take more space but you know probably something like it a TTL for pin or 5 pin would be good and then just like a shirt lookout 5 ft adapter or something like a 5-ft adapting cable with actual xlrs on the other end that might be a way to handle that but you know portion somehow pops out or comes out with screws and that you can replace it with an XLR or ttl?
I have seen a 4d expansion plate that dji is coming that has 2 xlr and sdi outputs
DJI should make some additional lower aperture lens
