      Did you notice that when we saw video of the three crew members talking about the company and lodging a complaint, the third officer - the Comms Officer, was the actress who played Isaac Newton’s assistant at the start of Wild Blue Yonder. She also appeared in the Christmas special at the bar, asking if Ruby’s group can play any Gaudette.
      She is also in the second episode, serving food in the canteen that the Beatles are in.
      She’s gonna be a big character….

      Like the 11th Doctor said:"I can't see it anymore. I'm 907, after a while you just can't see it. I look at a star and it's just a big ball of burning gas, I know how it began and I know how it ends and I was probably _there_ both times. After a while, everything is just _stuff._ That's the problem, when you make all of space and time your backyard, what do you have? A backyard. But you? You can see it. And when you see it, _I_ see it."

      I’m usually pretty critical of visual special effects in everything, but Doctor Who gets a total pass. It’s ingrained into the DNA of the very show. Even when we have good CGI, we also have bad CGI. I’ve just learned to accept it all. From 1963 to now.

    Daily reminder to everyone that uncanny valley doesn't equal bad effects. We shouldn't ban certain concepts in writing just because uncanny valley is unavoidable. Its the reason modok looked "bad". Despite just being an upscaled human head in a film with great effects otherwise. If you want to work out if its UV or bad... look at the rest of the effects. If the rest is good... why would the most important effect be not given as much care?
    P.s. if you're looking for good consistent effects as a requirement in doctor who, even now... give up. Sometimes its ok to not be perfect.

      Absolutely fair comment, I appreciate this. I think we had differing levels of being able to see past / acclimate to it, but I appreciate what they tried here & how they went about it. And you're absolutely correct haha - wonky effects are kinda Who tradition at this point. The imagination is what counts.

    • @geekhideout8161
      @geekhideout8161 27 днів тому +3

      Everything you said is right - except about Quantumania. That film is straight-up one of the ugliest looking blockbusters I've ever seen, and MODOK is just the cherry on top

    • @jakeoliver9167
      @jakeoliver9167 27 днів тому +8

      @@geekhideout8161it's the exact same principle. Modok... is literally just an upscaled head. They can't screw that up. Its uncanny valley. 100%. And you can call it ugly on the eye... the whole movie even... but you can't call it bad effects. Unfortunately it's unavoidable with characters like modok and she hulk. Just upscales. No drastic changes. Too close to human. Which is why Davy Jones looks so good. He has so much detail. It's not just a smooth skinned block green upscaled woman... or an upscaled giant human head. More proof? Look at bruce hulk in the she hulk show... he looks so much better despite her being the main character. Why? Because he doesn't have smooth skin. He has stubble. Wrinkles. Bulkier. More inconsistent skin colour. Not perfect hair. In other words... detail. Unobtainable with she hulk as the comic depiction is a model with smooth skin, perfect hair etc. Also why... old hulk, looks better than professor hulk. Less human expressions and facial appearance. Less severe uncanny valley.

    😊❤ so what I took away from the episode about the bogey man is that it’s not the last of its kind. It’s the only one of its kind the doctor initially was not gonna do anything to save it until he started to realize that just like himself it’s the only one of its kind so it deserves a chance to live. Also, the bogey man is not evil. It was just programmed to be that way, so it wasn’t evil by choice. It’s the computer system programmed it. Remember it was not programmed to hurt the children. It was programmed to just scare the children.😊😊

  • @quietdime
    @quietdime 27 днів тому +54

    I really really don't understand what people are complaining about. Good character and relationship building between the leads. We have camp back. It feels fun, exciting, joyful. Things are explained with buoyancy and seat-of-your-pants energy. Ruby's openness and optimism is wonderful. The tone works. The pacing flows. And I think that we're missing that this *IS* a kids show.
    Season 1 from 2005 was entirely silly. The pilot had a trash-can eat a person and then spit out a rubber doppleganger. The second episode had "the last human alive" which was a piece of---ehem, hold on, give me a moment... stretched skin on a rack with a pair of eyes and lips. "Moisturize me" is a meme. The build up throughout that ridiculousness led to some of the most emotional, connecting, and thrilling storylines in all of television history.
    Doctor Who has been changing since its inception. Right now, the show is talking about realities without having to MAKE a point, and it feels like we're going back to what I loved about the show and missed about Whitakers seasons: the relationship between the Doctor and his companion. I understand that they're not tying up all the loose ends on how/why things happened in this episode, but... maybe they don't have to right now? Maybe that's not what we're doing.

      That's exactly the word - camp! Full-on, dialed-to-11 camp, especially with episode 2. It's delightful.
      My only thing is I hope they tone down the constant giggling and jumping. Just a smidge. It made sense at first because this is all new to her and he's a whole new doctor. But giggling and jumping purely because you're moving and not because something joyful just happened is taking me out of the story. It feels forced. Until I see them snorting space crack or something, I can't help but think "Uh, y'all good or did they put actual crack in your lunch?"

    Also.. ‘Look Who’s Talking’ set my standards for talking babies, this made me wonder how is it 20/30 years later, they managed to make it look worse 😅 I’m like um, is it the moving mouth, then quickly I realised their facial expressions not matching the situations or even the words was what it was, but that made me feel bad, cause they’re babies 😂😂😂 so I let it go.
    I also found the ending with the boogeyman, off a little, watching it here the thought that came to me was ‘oh if this was so and so’s doctor, the creature would die and the doctor would have a go at the person responsible, and the companion would see the doctor angry for the first time and try to calm things down, and we learn that humans always try to kill what they’re afraid of, and the doctor who named himself that to save people, get disappointed with us every time and disappointed with himself for not anticipating it and saving the being…’
    When I put it like that I realised that all the episode was missing was a little more consequence, even after saving the bogeyman, all we got was bad nanny but we love you anyways, and she’s like I know I won’t do it again. Which makes you think… y’all have been here 6 years!! That woman hasn’t spoken to anyone else in 6 years! She’s been playing a computer and been terrified of the monster in her basement for 6 years!! Her wanting to kill it made sense but the lack of deeper emotions or conversations after? Isn’t this doctor supposed to be more open about confronting hard emotions, that’s how they set him up? So why not have a moment with ruby and the woman talk about why the solitude was hard, why she should take the bogeyman in, we just brushed past the fact she was about to kill herself for the babies just before they arrived, that she had to PLAY AS AN AI for 6 years to avoid harsh realities… but no instead we hug babies and tell them it’s ok to be different… I 🧐
    I’m starting to realise my issues with this more than before 😅

    As a Doctor who fan who has watched almost every episode ever, I will say I like that they made it explain everything at once the reason is I'm not looking at it as a American or Brit, the reason they did it this way is because the Disney+ deal allows this show to be shown around the world to places that never seen or heard of Doctor Who and those people will need to understand. The Disney deal didn't start really till today's episode RTD even said that. So for that reason I'm ok with this looking at it as a new person who never seen the show.

    😊❤ this is how I think they should’ve done the space Bab talking. I think it was back in Matt Smith’s era it was I think a Christmas special with the Cybermen that he went back to visit this one guy from a past episode. The man is a new father with a baby and Matt Smith is having a Conversation with the baby and all the babies doing is going goo gaga and all that stuff. The dad says you’re talking to the baby and Matt Smith says yes I speak baby. Take that concept put it into space babies and the babies they didn’t actually have to have the mouths moving, but you can easily have the tardis do that whole language conversion thing like they do for the aliens and the babies speak so that Ruby understands what they’re saying instead of having their mouse digitally move around.

    Honestly, this episode of Doctor Who was better than most episodes that I've see of X-Men '97 because Doctor Who has actual plot. They set the plot devices up early in the episode, and we are rewarded when seemingly ordinary events turn out to be explanations for the general adventure, which is something that is greatly underused in storytelling on film. Everything worked mechanically, even if the jokes were a bit juvenile.

She’s this giant question mark and he’s spilling a lot of secrets to her. If he's investigating who she is in secret, I don't know if he should be giving her a TARDIS key after 24 hours of knowing her. I guess I'm just used to Nine to Thirteen being protective of their history/more mysterious.

    I think my feelings about this episode are about the same as yours. I love love love Ncuti and Millie as the leads, but the space babies were creepier than the monster to me. In fact, if they’d done one of their classic Doctor Who twists and had the babies be the evil ones at the end and trying to wipe out the poor boogeyman species, I wouldn’t have been surprised, lol. I think the time limit hurt them a bit because the about face from “this thing is terrifying” to “everyone wants to save it” was extremely quick and that made it harder to buy into the idea that it needed and deserved to be saved. Maybe there should have been a scene where, instead of finding Eric with the nappy quip, they instead discover that Eric was safe with the monster who was just lonely or whatever.
    This turned out to be one of my least favorite episodes of the show, but Ncuti’s vibrance and energy saved it for me.
    I am looking forward to the Ruby story, though, so while I’m a bit disappointed with this episode, I’m still excited for the rest of the series.
    Here’s hoping the Doctor remembers to keep the butterfly compensator on from now on!

    I did however, really like that moment with the Doctor saving the monster and the narrative reflecting on his loneliness. I feared the show wanting to remove itself completely from it's past, but the Doctor dealing with this is both something new and meaningful, while still connecting to the show's past in a way. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with it.
