- this is the first posted video of shannon playing the deflorate album as far as i can tell
this is Shannon Lucas, one of the best metal drummers, playing drums on THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDERS NEWEST ALBUM Deflorate. I do not own this video, and i do not take credit for this video. this video was on the LTD edition version of Deflorate, the new black dahlia murder CD along with "were going Places..."
Shannon lucas drummer from the black dahlia murder

The fucking Nocturnal album, fuck.
I'm 30 now, and it sounds even better than when I was 15
Fuuuuck Same
Miasma, Nocturnal and Deflorate
All timeless classics
@@caseypnw Obligatory "RIP Trevor" Didn't forsee that in the year since this comment was made...
14 years later and he is still one of the best metal drummers, very underrated too
Dudes a beast
He was and still is one of the best and most creative metal drummer period . He had groove, creative fills, speed and so many blast variations like the stop and go hammer blast ! This man is a legend !
Yess SIRRR FACTS
Shannon is my favorite TBDM drummer
Mentoo
Hands down
He was innovative as fuck !
G O A T
THE BEST
Alan Cassidy is dope too, RIP Trevor Strnad
Shannon Lucas is the reason why TBDM play so tight live.
I remember learning this whole album through and through when I was 15 years old and because of this album am I now a professional live and studio drummer. Nocturnal and Deflorate tought me the patience and technique needed to advance in my practice and progress. Its so odd to here these songs again after so many years and 9 hour practice days where i used to skip school and play the drums all day.
Where are all your videos at?
@@davidwhippen5740 He fulllll a shit man
@@toemasmeems This guy... got nothing to show. For me, that statement is true. I wouldnt call myself a professional musician, but it got me to tour some european cities, and Japan. These 2 albums mean a FUCKLOT to me! unlike "Scotty" i got something on my channel to back it up ;)
@@sebbimon bahahah thats hilarious Ill peep your channel now. But also I am pretty jealous of your experience I got to do one DIY tour here in the states it was more of a learning experience but yeah I wouldn't say profession here either. although i do think from the vids on my channel I too could have been one.
@@sebbimon your playthrough of Dave Goes to Hollywood was fucking tight!
I still remember me and my bud going out to our local mall and picking this record up. Back when Hot Topic was actually kinda cool! We still quote "We're Going Places" to this day. Good times...
He actually used to work with my mom at a restaurant in Staunton, VA, before becoming famous and whatnot, and he came back to visit a few days ago, and I got a cymbal signed by him that he actually played, it even has a crack in it from him playing so hard :P
2:44.... Fucking animal! I could watch him drum all day fucking long.
+Andrew Shirley He makes everything look so easy. Its like watching a ballet lol.
Shannon Lucas always gonna b in my top 5 fav drummers. Cassidy is descent AF but nobody can replace THE LUCA$
They werent the same without Shannon, and they certainly never will be without Trevor.
These old albums are legendary and I cherish them all. RIP Trevor
He will always be a legend his Playing in all that remains still makes my jaw drop to this day
I dont care that people say that Alan Cassidy is better, fast and stronger in his beats, the thing i love with Shannon is that his blast beats fit so into the song
TBDM has. It been the same since he left. That may be an obvious statement but to me, the quality has gone way down. Shannon makes any band he's with better.
+Gregory blankenship typos. Hasn't been the same.
Yea I was definitely disappointed when I found out he was leaving. He makes it look so effortless here but damn it sounds great.
The quality of the music has NOT gone down. You're just a fucking idiot.
i think alan is a great drummer but shannon have certanly more groove but alan cassidy foot techinque and hand is sick and tight
He play the song of shannon really well take a look of threat n°3
Shannon Lucas and Alex rudinger. My favorites
Cant forget the orbinator also in that fantastic list!
Agreed.. Alex Bent is up and coming also...
Even if you dont like metal, if you are any musician of any kind you have to at LEAST appreciate the skill and talent shannon has! incredible!
I remember watching this in 09 as a drummer. Coming back to this music now later in life as a guitar player listening to the guitars how awesome the dual tracked riffs are, coupled with Shannon's groovy blasts and the great production on this album, this is truly some basass, and inspiring music.
He's got great feel and his blasts are suprisingly groovy! Awesome to see a mix of melody and death metal speeds. Defenitely gonna have to buy this album as I havent heard much of it until now. SICK!
Years of practice is shown right here...man I wish I could be that fast.
particular focus on how gently tamponn lucas caresses his snare drum, i have never seen this much energy in a drummers hand. and the surprisingly wholesome sound each gentle touch miraculously produces, just wow. is he in for the modern tamponn award yet? cause if he's not, he should at least go down for most talented and versatile drummer in the world!
Incredible Stamina. Great speed. Awesome Drummer. Amazing Band.
Am I the only who realizes the editor mixed up the songs?
Yeah it's on my Deflorate bonus dvd, the songs are switched up.
I saw it too
Completely. Almost.
Ahhhhh!! Its proof that the machines have taken over and are among us. No human should be able to drum as fast as Shannon and Alan.
mkehandgrenades but he's not that fast... like he has very standard death metal drummer speed
Kevin Paradis is faster than all of them. Dude is a beast.
+lowshay ty. His band is sick too.
Look up despised icons album day of mourning that dude is faster than this but shannon is still a beast
the concept of failure Alex grind is ridiculous.
OMFG! This is currently THE BEST footage of Shannon ripping it up. Thanks so much for posting!!
their new album is just amazing!!
especially the guitar and drums.
Shannon is an incredible drummer with great stamina.
Thank you Mr. Lucas, for showing us the way.
I love it. It's awsome. Some my friends are saying : Metal is only biting to instruments. This video proves, that it's not truth. This drumer is one of the best i think. I love this band. I love their songs. Keep this work boys. It can't be better!!
This is just so awesome. Everyone (and by everyone I mean other drummers whose interviews I read in Drum! or Modern Drummer) always talk about how everyone wants to play fast, speed isn't everything, blah blah blah. ..True but...
with all that said, Shannon Lucas plays ridiculously fast, super clean, and is so tasteful with his licks. Even at super high tempos he still manages to throw in a little fill or bass drum lick that is like man....how did he fit that in there.
I love his drumming.
i hate it when i find a drummer i wish i had been watching a long time ago. so much missed time.....excellent video
I like how he uses single pedal for some blasts and double for others.
Those bassdrums sound just PERFECT for the music.
And so does Shannon :)
he is such a monster..he makes this stuff look so effortless. its just amazing
On the bass drums they are DDrum PRO triggers, the same I use (you can see one of them attached to his left BD), and they are really great both for affidability and responsiveness (Combined with a Clavia North ddrum4 SE drum brain, they are indeed one of the best IF NOT the best choice for live/studio triggering)
Yes, indeed many drummers abuse the triggers by light-tapping on them for speed, au contraire Lucas has an impressive power for an ankle motion in using Axis Pedals.
Man, I wish I could play like this guy.
he may not be one of the best drummers but certainly he is one of the greatest
live for this
every fucking day of my i thank the universe for shannon lucas.
Amazing drummer favorite🤘
the best drummer of tbdm
the exakt reason why im here
Eh. Alan is just as good if not better.
@shav12
...
A stick hits a drum head. That causes vibrations that we call "sound waves". That "sound wave" is picked up by a microphone to amplify, or make louder, so the entire audience can hear perfectly.
One of the best drummers metal has ever seen.
yet another drummer of an amazingly sick band that i had no idea was straight edge. awesome
Sad to see this now...given his recent departure. TBDM will still rule hard!
Still ruling hard .
Worldest greatest drummer!!
i like how his songs are simplistic but fast i rekon it sounds mad
Niggles,
you are so right
It is fun trying to learn stuff by listening, but being able to see it first hand does wonders. it allows you to stop THINKING about what they are playing and actually visualize it. Once you have visualized it, it is easier to commit to muscle memory.
The Revolver mag with Trevor on the front has some great info on TBDM, like Shannon would play as fast as he possibly could then report back to Brian on it, then Brian would write some songs with the bpm Shannon was playing at for Deflorate.
2:57 is just epic,
Imagine him being on stage with Black Dahlia murder now? As a guest drummer🎉
i met shannon thru my best friend dallas. dallas knew shannon since they were in school in virgina. my friend dallas owns 3 tattoo shops. shannon comes to ohio to visit and get tattooed several times a year. he is a sick drummer and dude...
after watching this video,im fucking honored to have one of his drumsticks
The human drum machine at work. Beautiful.
Snare was sampled, but there was a lot of automation done during the blasts (so the acoustic snare would pop out.) Kick was triggered. Toms and cymbals are all acoustic, no sampling. There was ~6hr of editing done, going through the album twice - mainly just consolidating punches.
This is all directly from Mark Lewis, the engineer at Audiohammer who recorded Deflorate.
he uses his axis nicely.and with power which is nice to see
does anyone know what trigger module he uses on his bassdrums. i saw them live like a month or two ago and the bass sound was amazing
im lookin to start to play some bdm drums. any got recomendations on what kit to buy
@MKiller5 The sound replacement is done in the editing program, and is often mixed with the real snare/kick sound. This is to prevent double-triggering and such, plus getting some ambience in to the mix.
I got to meet this guy on friday when they played here in tucson, hes awesome, got his signature too
Saw them live shannon is just crazy..
nossa voce se superou meu chapa muito bom no rock´s ....show de bola.
UNTOUCHABLE .
shannon's endurance is astounding
Yeah Shannon ruled. Funnest time in bdm history for me
love it
i will now proceed to buy this cd/dvd combo tomorrow
He is one of the smoothest drummers ive ever seen
This information is straight from Mark Lewis (Co-Producer of Delforate, along w/ Jason Seucof).
Snare mic was sm57 or audix i5 and a AKG 414 on top. and sm57 on bottom.
They also mixed in a sample they made of a Pearl Joey Jordison Snare.
I NOW HAVE THIS ALBUM!!
and both BDM DVDs...
anybody know what snare drum and ride he uses? I've been debating over getting a pearl reference snare and a byzance sky ride.. but shannon's equipment sounds amazing and i'm not sure if it's all owed to the recording or not. Either way i would like to know so i can test some equipment out.
@aztec6707 Exactly. He's got rhythm and speed, and when you combine those, you have a beastly fucking drummer.
The DVD/CD package is a good investment. Go and buy it as soon as possible.
He plays that good live to. He's crispy.
Does anybody know where I could find a program where I could take out the drumtrack?
arnt there any full length drumming videos for these songs?
@Tylerthemetalking who did you play with a warp tour what band?
This is a real fucking deathcore drummer. I see no flying fingers or any special technique, just pure fucking stamina! Definitely one of my new favourite drummers.
@webbtje
I have spent the last 10 minutes reading your comments and I must say they are nothing short of impressive keep up the good work
can someone tell me what bell cymbal that is? i cant even find one on the sabian site and shannon says he only plays sabian so..
Shannon is a freaking beast...damn
You don't need a drum machine when you have Shannon Lucas. The dude's a fucking machine! I just saw him live about 2 hours ago in SLC, UT.
Shannon Lucas is the living proof that practice makes master.
no one knows how shannon lucas play drums like this but we're all better people because of it
Ah, Black Valor...everytime I hop into my bro's '88 Cadillac Cimarron, I pop a special tape into the tape deck, plug the tape into my Pod......and Blast that song hahaha.
damn... talk about cleanliness and tightness... shannon is poster boy for clean and tight death metal drumming... may not be the fastest drummer out there... but this is fuckin' perfect... mad props to Shannon!
This just doesn't get old. Death Panorama is fuckin sick as dicks.
Also, this video is not from the tracking sessions. It was filmed after the fact.
Does anyone know what ride cymbal that is?
Looks like a power bell ride of some sort but I am not sure.
he gets that snare sound by not having physical trigger on the snare but by triggering through pro tools he prolly more than likely mixes the mike and trigger sound toghether to get that fat sounding crack that and a really good engineer also would like to say shannon is one the best drummers to come around in along time solid as fucking adimantium.
Axeman720 at the Andy Sneap forum -
Snare sample is a sample i made of a joey jordison snare, believe it or not. And the kick is a dw 22" kick that is one of my favorite samples. That kick sample was made with a d6 and subkick through a 1081 and api then i ran the sample through a pultec for additional eq. Wish i could remember what beater i used on that one, its a big part of the sound. I think it was a wood beater, but not sure. Also there is alot of real snare on this drum mix
Does anyone know what ride he uses? i know its a sabian hand hammered but does anyone know the type or size?
i WILL have a kit exactly like that set up one day!!!
oh yeah you're right...about the heads and the pedals haha. i have classic black longboards, pure works of genius!
AWESOME !
why is he not more popular!!!!???
His eardrums flutter and swing ever so carelessly in the breeze...
Deflorate was the best thing I ever spent 8 dollars on
any idea what hi-hats he's using? Can see the AAX, but can't tell beyond that.
all i know is hes flawless live. i couldnt tell him to change a thing
whenever i blast beat or play fast singles my sticks hit each other... I saw why and whenever my singles get fast the stick on my left hand keeps on bending to the right.. how can i fix this?
Kick tension is cranked, doesnt matter what its stuffed with. Ddrum triggers. DM5 module.
Snare is a 5.5"x14" Starclassic Copper
Which AAX hi hats are those?
Stage, fast, or......
Also what is that HHX crash on his right? I do not think it is an X-Plosion but the hammering looks really cool.
does anyone know what chinas he is using? especially the left one!
