Very talented young orchestra, fine conductor. Isn't it funny to see a whole orchestra where everybody has a full head of hair?
Hahahaha very good
😊😊
Hahahaha yes baldness the final frontier of PC
See......this is why I love watching these orchestrational presentations. It's amazing to see the musicians "becoming" the music they are so painstakingly generating.
One cannot simply "play" the planets; you have to realize you "are" those planets you are representing.
Especially towards the end of Mars, you could feel the dedicated intensity needed to reproduce this outstanding finale. The god of War, turned these musicians into his own personal army of FEARLESS warriors!
GREAT!
At 81 i've discovered this performance. Thank you. Music at it's best!
Well keep discovering. How is it going?
82 now hopefully! 🙏
This version of The Planets is magical. I am 63 and it is the most rousing, beautiful, powerful performance of this piece I have ever heard. The young orchestra are a wonder to listen to. Their youth gives the work a spontaneous vigour all it`s own.
I keep returning to this performance, after having heard so many other renditions. This orchestra gives it the raw energy especially "Mars" needs.
Mars is absolutely exceptional, I have also never seen an orchestra this size actually perform Holst`s masterpiece. Edward Gardner`s direction of the orchestra is so filled with empathy and care, and those young musicians, they literally bring tears to my eyes. The whole performance is miraculous So glad you, and many others, feel the same love for this performance.@@sjdpfisvrj

Thanks for reuploading this. IMO the best version of Holst's Planets
With all due respect to your opinion, my favorite recording of the original suite is by Sir Charles Mackerras and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra taking the spot for my favorite recording of “Pluto.”
It is actually. Mars is relentless in this version. (Plus it elegantly features a Euphonium section.)
The dynamics and strength of this performance is what makes it so good. I always come to this recording for comfort, it’s my favorite rendition of the piece too:)

Boult is the best recording but this is defo second
To all the youth out there. Hopefully you'll see this comment. What a magnificent performance
Yes, it is wonderfully presented, emaled it to my brother, a physics person to enjoy. One can almost feel themselves. out there, viewing the planets in all their presence.
I love classical music!
Wow! The vigour and vitality this orchestra brings to Holst's Planets is a wonderful thing, and such sensitivity too. It's the best.
OMG ...THOSE ARE YOUNG PLAYERS ? OMG OMG OMG ~~~ MAGNIFIQUE. AMAZING !!!! BRAVOOOOO
WELCOME ABOARD
Wow, that’s the best youth orchestra I’ve ever heard, the future of music seems safe in their hands
they are all parrots anyway. whats the difference.

This is a cosmic lullaby, and quenches the dryness of the earthling soul
These fantastically talented young musicians under the guidance of Edward Gardner have produced in my mind the finest version of Holst’s Planet Suite, the potential in these amazing musicians is incredible, with this concert they have demonstrated what utter perfection can be produced regardless of age, their dedication and hard work in pursuing their dreams is totally appreciated in my house. Would loved to have experienced this live, I wish all of you, long and enjoyable musical careers.
Period!
I second your comment. What a wonderful performance. When I was younger, I used to take the LP out of the library and then an episode of Inspector Lewis reminded me how much I loved it.
The timpani at the first crescendo was PERFECT!
Agree totally!
I'm glad to see this back on UA-cam. Gardner and these young musicians bring such vitality and sensitivity to Holst's work.
Agree. I used to have this on as I worked around the office and then it 'went away . . . " for the better part of a year and then today it's back!

Although I remain unconvinced by Matthews' 'Pluto' addition, this is hands down one of the best live recordings of the Planets you will ever see or hear. The depth and power is astounding, but matched with beauty and subtlety where needed too. Remarkable.
Only a genius can continue the work of another genius, which Matthew is not.

I have watched in awe at the wonderful talented orchestra and director. I have listened to this at least 25 times. One of my favorites. Thank you.
Clearly---mine too.
Okay but can we take a moment to talk about the absolute mystery and enchantment in Neptune? From the magic the woodwinds and piano brought to it, to the indescribable way they did the choir. And the conductor’s face! Even he felt that.
Pluto should be demoted to a sparkling celestial body.
Neptune is my favourite movement.
I just found out over the weekend my planet is Neptune, never knew I had one. This was an amazing piece by this orchestra, I am very impressed.
both neptune and jupiter are the best
@@saidtheactress Mine, too! The Intro from 41:22 bis 43:08 so fucking inspired the "Alien" Theme and "Anakins Dark Deeds/Birth of the Twins" of course
This performance of Holst's masterpiece is quite simply second to none.
This is probably the best rendition I’ve ever heard what an absolute display of talent! Probably the most energetic and clear rendition I’ve seen.Kudos to the conductor also
A FANTASTIC performance and, yeah, I missed it while it was gone. The only problem with this video is that I can't have it on just to listen as background. The videography, the musicians, the conductor ... all so enthralling to watch.
What a joy to see and hear these talented young musicians. I keep coming back to watch this fabulous video when ever I need a reassurance that the future of classical music is in good hands.
Its great to see this video again, after the other one got taken down for some reason.
it was taken down because it was monetised and this is copyright content
@@SuperHeliumboy I'm performing in this - Planets is out of copyright, so how could this happen?
@@StuartBramwellMusic I dont know the whole story but when i uploaded this video youtube immediately recognised the music and said this is a copyright claim so you cant monetise it but the owner allows the content to be uploaded so i guessed thats what happened with the last video
@@SuperHeliumboy Have a look at Article 10 of the Rome Convention on Performer's Rights. The WTO TRIPS Agreement is also relevant in some jurisdictions. Essentially the performers and recorders have a right to a fair share of your profits.
Not only performed with precision, but with subtlety, energy, and emotion. This group put their own distinct stamp on a classic like I've never heard it before. Thank you for renewing and lifting this piece to a new level. Gustav would be very proud, I'm sure.
And, although the Royal Albert once had a negative reputation for poor sound, the new work AND BBC Sound technicians, AND Cameramen, did a excellent job.
Glad the full version is back. I missed this!
INCREDIBLE ! Listen to it on full volume !
This is a cosmic lullaby
Every musician in this concert was superb, as was the conductor. Wow, very impressed.
For a youth orchestra to achieve this level of excellence is unprecedented. Bravo!
WOW! Just, wow! What an amazing group of musicians.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this observation, but...this suite is so dang cinematic. I hear Star Wars (and Die Hard) in Mars, Braveheart in Jupiter, Raiders of the Lost Ark in Saturn...
I can only imagine that many film score composers were influenced by Holst's work. The Planets suite is so gripping and visceral.
What a pleasure to have the entire suite in one performance. Thank you, uploader.
It's undeniable that a lot of film composers take inspiration from classical music. Often films have classical music as "placeholders" for sound in scenes before the score has been composed so the composer often ends up making something very similar. In 2001: A space odyssey (apparently) Kubrick (director) liked the placeholder music in the opening scene (Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss) so much that he ended up putting it in the movie instead of what his composer had made. Another interesting example of obvious inspiration is star wars main theme inspired by King's Row by Korngold (ua-cam.com/video/QKOYgr-gWZE/v-deo.html)
Every musician is inspired by some other music, but I do personally dislike how blatantly film composers often "copy" classical music and end up being much more known, while the classical piece gets lost in obscurity.
OTOH, have you ever noticed that there is *always* a dramatic “classical” segment in the credits of almost any major movie you can think of? Sometimes it’s the totally final music, oft times it’s not. But it’s always there somewhere at the end. Nothing seals the gravitas of the drama like the classical style.
@@kerrycanfield332 this is often the 'showcase' for the composer's work, where he/she is allowed to sting together a version of the theme(s) that flow musically uninterrupted (without having to match action). If you go back far enough (in the days when the majority of the credits rolled at the opening) there were even overtures that played entirely before the film even started i.e. Lawrence of Arabia (which also has a musical intermission if I remember correctly).
It's not coincidence . Lucas planned to use this pieces. But in the end was the main source to the original soundtrack of star wars.
Fabuleux !!! Magnifique !!! Vénus, en particulier, est de toute beauté.
Thank heavens it has been returned to us
Love Gardner's conducting. I wish the camera had stayed on him a tad more.
Really wonderful, Edward Gardner is a marvelous conductor; so lively and obviously enjoying the performance.

Einfach super dieses Junge Orchestra ,gänsehaut pur.
In the 11 years that I’ve lived I never heard such magnificent pieces of music
Bro there's so much good classical music out there you have no idea
Shostakovich 11 and rite of spring are good ones to start with. More eastern and arythmic
You're lucky to be so young with so much yet to discover in this wonderful and infinite world of classical music.
And so lucky to have UA-cam to help you discover all of it for free, when at your age I had to buy my own records...
You're absolutely right. I always liked classical music even as a child, but I'm in my late 60s now and still remember vividly the day a friend and I discovered his mother's recordings of The Rite of Spring, Petrouchka and Firebird. All three (but especially the Rite of Spring) made a huge impact on both of us. It was sounds and rhythms that we didn't even know were possible. I discovered Shostakovich a little later, and it also blew me away!@@finniananderson2007
Wow. I just watched Jupiter. What a beautiful assembly of talent and skilled expression. Holst would have been proud! So glad to see a youth orchestra of such mastery. The future looks more bright thanks to you.

GOOD ?
For all the wonderful recordings of this work over the years, I'm not sure I've ever heard a more vibrant performance than this. Quite quite magnificent. For anyone who has come bored listening to 'The Planets', this will astonish you. Utterly fantastic.
I Agree with you 100% . I'd add Incredibly brilliant . These young musicians have managed to capture the true spirit of The Planets which I'm absolutely certain Holst himself would agree! Most listening would undoubtably agree as well that this performance may be second to none.
I'm rediscovering the Planets with this video, and it's quite exhilarating. What a masterpiece !
I noted on the original upload of this video how well Gardner's facial expressions match the tenor of the particular section he's conducting: stern on "Mars, Bringer of War", soft and gentle on "Venus, Bringer of Peace", roguish and mischievous on "Mercury, Messenger of the Gods".
My favorite will always be his face just before the climax of Uranus and toward the end of Neptune.
Spectacular version and performance, Bravo Maestro Gardner and all the Orchestra, your performance is historic.
You kiddos sound incredible, amazing work
Such and inspiration, and a delight, to see the talent and dedication of these young people. They are LEANING INTO this piece, from start to finish. Bravo!
Holst is a great cosmic Alchemist
Dang, 7 years later and I'm still watching this. Absolutely amazing performance. Well done.
I’m not your dad but you might want to consider moving on with your life. This piece is freaking amazing but 7 years is quite a long time to watch one video…
@@aaroncrnkovic1398 You're right. No one listens to music for more than a few months, at best. Oh, wait, Holst wrote the Planets in 1914 - 1916, yet we still listen to it.
Ik I meant that as a joke. I intentionally misread your comment as meaning you were sitting at your computer for seven straight years. Sorry I worded it poorly. As for the music I totally agree it’s as good now as it was back then. I’m seeing the Chicago S.O. play it live in a week so ig I kinda have to agree!
Wow. Wow! As many different versions that I've heard of this...and wait: there's Pluto too? Omigosh, what a treasure! And I'm thrilled for these young musicians who are really feeling the majesty of these works as they perform. Bravo!!!
It’s called the Planets. Not dwarf Planets. Also, Pluto hasn’t been discovered until the 30s I believe
I think although the addition of "Pluto" is an interesting experiment, it completely screws up the quiet almost silent ending that Holst clearly intended the piece to finish on.
Yeah, maybe it should be after Uranus
I agree. I'm sure they mentioned it before or in the program.
A very good point. Almost as bad as playing, knees-up- mother brown, after ELGARS NIMROD
This music allows for so many beautiful images. I've stumbled across this composer by chance and I am intrigued
Holst is pretty much the reason we have band programs in this country.

I am so happy. The music is amazing but watching these wonderful young performers makes it very special.
An amazing performance from some incredibly talented young musicians. The closeups of Maestro Gardiner show just how much he is enjoying working with them. But his expression at 48:46 = You know you've done something bad and hear your mother call you by your full name from two blocks away! Thanks for uploading this again!
You made my day (night)!
Neptune is one of the most difficult music in term of tone, especially because winds are almost every time on ppp nuance and it is very very hard to maintain accuracy at this low level.
I love this concert but winds had some trouble to find the accuracy on this part.
@@drwuu596 I think Mercury is harder (definitely a finger twister). Mind you, I'm thinking of this a as a string player (specifically a cellist).
Pretty sure that's not what's behind his expression at 48:46...

This is the performance of a top class orchestra.
The recording is So good. Useful to see an Orchestra perform, to see which instruments were used to create what.

Thank you so much for uploading this. This version with this fantastic youth orchestra are the reason I got into The Planets two years ago. They bring so much energy to it and it tops every other performance
OH MY GOD THAT WAS GLORIOUS!!!!!!!
Absolutely the best rendition of the Planets performed. Strength in numbers as some orchestras are thinner in their ranks, depleting the depth, and in part, this is where this performance shines. The precision and flow is to the credit of the Maestro, but also, his connection with the whole orchestra.
I wonder why this video doesn't have as many likes as it should.
The original upload had 1.5 million views. It was then taken off for a year or two. I've only just rediscovered it, as many more will when word gets around.

AMAZING.
These fantastically talented young musicians under the guidance of Edward Gardner have produced in my mind the finest version of Holst’s Planet Suite, I've always marvelled at how an orchestra can concordinate their notes. Today, I've seen they don't but modulate their tones to meet their fellow musicians to create a pleasant harmony.......how else are they to play?
When you think about it, musicians can't play the exact same note at the EXACT same time multiplied by that number by ten or more. Swure, after lots of practice maybe two or three people could play the same note at the exact same time but more than than that, you're into the realm of fantasy.
i'M NOT, A TRAINED MUSICIAN BUT--IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE PRINTED MUSIC SHEETS, WHICH THEY ALL HAVE. SO THEY ALL WORK FROM THE SAME MUSIC SHEETS, EVERY NOTE IS IN VIEW. tHATS WHY THEY ARE TRAINED AND ADVISED FOR SO MANY YEARS'
AND SO IS THE CONDUCTORS LEADERSHIP, WITH HIS BATON.. I THINK YOU'LL AGREE, THE SYSTEM WORKS.
The music of the future.....fantastic!!!!
Thats what they must have thought back in 1918 sept 29th, when the first performance was played , in London.
