- 📅 9th Jan - Welcome to the 2nd episode of #PotToPickle: What We Need To Sow Our First Veg Seeds! #PotToPickle is a series of grow-a-long, back-to -basics video tutorials for the novice urban vegetable grower. We'll be going through the entire growing season together! And we will be growing everything in pots 🌱 I’ll be showing you that no matter how small your outside space, you can still grow a decent amount of veg 🎉

Episode 2 is about prep, the things you will need to sow your first seeds and for the growing season ahead. It’s not much, and it’s nothing fancy!
You need just two fundamental things to grow veg from seed at home:
1) A sunny windowsill inside your home (I show you mine) 0:56
2) Outside space - no matter how tiny! - that also gets good sun (I show you mine) 3:24
Other things you will need for the season ahead that I cover in this video are:

In the next tutorial we’ll be sowing our first seeds! 🤩 Specifically, we’ll be sowing the following: aubergines (eggplant), chillies and sweet peppers, as these are the slowest growing of the veg. If you intend to grow any of these this year, have your seeds ready for the next tutorial, which will go out appx. 13th Jan. Tomatoes will be the next sowing after that, around the beginning of Feb. Then everything else will be sown from March onwards.

I want to grow beans this year, is this possible in pots? I heard the get really tall, how would that work?
Hi Juan! Yes absolutely you can grow beans in pots and I will share something about that later on in the year when it's time to sow beans. But how it works is if you get quite a large sized pot and create a bamboo wigwam in it, by pushing long bamboo canes into the perimeter of the pot, then bringing them together and tying them at the top. You then sow your beans at the base of each cane, and they climb the can - you'll end up with a bean wigwam!
my friend said I need a greenhouse do I need?
Hi Robert! A greenhouse is a nice to have but it's not necessary. You just need two fundamental things to grow veg from seed at home: 1) a sunny windowsill and 2) some outside space that also gets a lot of sun - hope that helps!
What about tomatoes?
Hi James! Tomato seeds are sown in exactly the same way as these chillies and aubergines, but we generally sow them a little later on as they grow faster than chillies and aubergines. I will be creating a tomato seed sowing tutorial around the start of Feb - stay tuned for it! 🍅
