  • I found this while looking up Sonic X-treme... this was the second concept that later developed into Sonic X-treme and it was based on SatAM, the Sonic TV show that aired sometime in 1994.
    Thanks to Sega 16 for this...

    To clear up misconceptions, SatAM--backed by Sega of America--was in production in 1992, and aired during the 1993 and 1994 years (in the unreleased season 3 that was cancelled, we would have seen the maturation of Tails, the rise of Snively and Nagus as primary villains, and the introduction of Knuckles). Too bad the show ended before any of that could occur, all thanks to new management and the high ratings for the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.

    The game would have featured two modes. Some levels would have been high speed chases like classic sonic games (running amuck in the factories causing damage and escape through the forest) while other levels were stealth mode (slower for exploration, sneeking etc..) like what we see in this video.
    You could say it's the developers fault for showing this footage to Yuji Naka instead of one of the faster scenes. It would have left a better impression. I believe this was coming from Morawiec.

    And as we know, SatAM was already airing--making Sally Sonic's love interest--before Sonic CD was made. Unfortunately, this didn't stop developers from calling Amy "Princess Sally" in the US game's manual in order to tie-in with the cartoon, even though Amy was NOT in the cartoon!

    The idea of having to sneak around is pretty cool, because in the show they couldn't just rush in head first even with Sonic's amazing speed. The problem here is that Sonic's speed isn't really getting a chance to shine at all, they should've had a chase scene, or something, in this demo. Gameplay like this would've probably been better suited to someone like Sally or Bunny. In fact, since in the series whenever they're infiltrating Robotropolis they always do it as a group, it'd be really cool if they made the game play more team orientated, like Legend of Mana, and you could switch to the Character that's better equipped for the task at hand. Just a thought.
    In any event, speaking as a huge fan of the show, it's a shame this never really got off the ground. Even if I can see why SEGA wasn't crazy about the idea.

    It's interesting how far the ring throwing mechanic went. After 16 died it was going to be reused for Sonic 3 yet was scrapped along with the drop dash, then the ring throwing mechanic was going to be used for Sonic Xtreme as an attack for Amy Rose but Xtreme ended up dying too

      And then it finally showed up in Sonic Battle as a ranged lightspeed dash: Sonic throws a ring, which flies up and lands on the field in an arc, and then you press the R button (GBA right shoulder button) again to lightspeed dash to the ring from any direction before it disappears.

    Exactly! SEGA should seriously consider making games based on both the SatAM/ Archie universes using the Classic Sonic design and the games/ Sonic X universe using the modern design. By doing that and trying to appeal to fans of both eras, they'd really make a lot more money that way and ,maybe calm the storm of the fanbase in a lot of ways too. I mean, if Nintendo can make the Zelda games with Toon Link to appeal to the kids, and the games with original Link for the older fans, why can't SEGA

    "Sally came before Amy, even during the time that Shogakuken owned Amy"
    By this I mean that even before 1993, when SEGA bought Amy from Shogakuken as an eight-year-old fangirl with a crush on local celebrity Sonic (in the 1992 manga guest-starring Sonic and starring Amy, both of them were human-animal transformers [hence Sonikku, since the name of the boy that became Sonic was called the Japanese version of Nikku]), concepts involving proto versions of Sally were being considered in the West.

  • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
    @TherealRNOwwfpooh 14 років тому +4

    @nicholasthetaylor: See ClassicTeam's response. Plus, Ricky--Sally's inspiration--*was* in the first Sonic game, thereby making Sally herself an official Sega character conceptually (especially since American Sega itself made a comic in 1991 as a test run for what would come in the future, starring Western concepts like Mobius & proto-Sally), whereas Amy was owned by Shogakuken (see: Pokemon manga) until Sega purchased her in 1993, well after SatAM & Archie established Sally as a love interest.

    Sega does now own all rights. There are two main branches: the American one that owns Sally & the other Freedom Fighters (i.e. SoA approved the creation of "SatAM" and Archie's comics, and although the comics came out first, they were based upon the cartoon's early concepts) and the Japanese one that owns the games (which is ironic, since SoJ's Sonic Team created Elise in 2006, and she fufills Sally's role, essentially).

    History states that "Amy was not actually created by Sonic Team. A prototype version of her appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog manga published on September 23, 1992, and there she was literally 'the girlfriend of Nikki (Sonic)', as the description translates." Of course, since Sally was already conceptualized before that (see the pre-SatAM storyboard ideas), Sally still predated Amy. "After that appearance, Sega took the character, and Kazuyuki Hoshino redesigned her for Sonic CD in 1993."

Unfortunately, SoJ has pretty much taken all control from SoA, thereby making everything based around the Japanese canon, even though the American canon existed first. @@NoelComiX Not really. Weekly syndicated Sonic was too much of a _Looney Tunes_ copycat wannabe.
      Even Sonic's true creators (this being both before & after they had left SEGA, mind you) Naoto Oshima (Sonic's primary character designer & personality developer) and Yuji Naka (the lead SEGA Genesis/SEGA MegaDrive programmer who input Sonic's movements & impatient attitude [via his idle pose] into the 16-bit games) admitted that they loved the American take on Sonic (in particular, Naoto Oshima, who even had a poster of the _Sonic SatAM_ series on the wall of his office, despite not coming over stateside like Yuji Naka & the others who worked alongside SEGA Technical Institute did [since they're the ones directly responsible for Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and the video games intentionally inspired by the DiC cartoons, namely Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which had _AoStH_ style box art, Sonic Spinball that was clearly inspired by the weekend series' 2nd season debut episode "Game Guy" & even included prototype versions of Princess Sally, Bunnie Rabbot, Rotor Walrus, and Sonic's dog Muttski as characters to rescue in a Special Stage, the cancelled _SatAM_ based game Sonic-16, one of the notable scrapped ideas behind what would've been Sonic Mars/Sonic Xtreme was to feature the Freedom Fighters in the game, the engine for Sonic Xtreme being repurposed for Sonic 3D Blast that was retitled upon its debut on the SEGA Genesis/SEGA MegaDrive's SEGA CD attachment to coincide with the much-delayed holiday special _Sonic Christmas Blast_ that was originally titled _Sonic's Xtreme Christmas_ & despite using the _AoStH_ campy art style, featured Princess Sally in a sadly predominately mute cameo utilizing one of her earlier designs]), that Sonic as a brand was intentionally developed with the American consumer base in mind (granted, this was in part due to competing with rival Nintendo's successful Super Mario franchise that had debuted in the West the previous decade) & that Sonic, the character, was fleshed out using American concepts (hence, his Old Glory American flag color scheme of red, white & blue, the fact that his red & white buckled sneakers coincided with Santa Claus promoting quintessential American soda company Coka-a-Cola's soft drink around Christmastime when Sonic was set to make his stateside debut as part of the pack-in package with the SEGA Genesis that actually released in America a full month before the overseas European & Asian countries - Japan included - received their SEGA MegaDrive console counterpart, and that Sonic's "way past cool" cockiness was taken from "Me Generation" American ideals). In addition to this, Yuji Naka himself said that the subtle environmental messages found in _Sonic SatAM_ & its overall nature VS machine premise of the underdog Freedom Fighters fighting against the tyrannical dictatorship of oppressive Dr. Robotnik was the gist of the original Sonic storyline. This is why Sonic Forces revisited it years later & failed spectacularly to successfully repeat what the 16-bit videogames & the Saturday Morning animated series achieved in Sonic's '90s heyday. That, and the fact that current SEGA (handcuffed by SEGA of Japan, whose tenured members HATE the American version of Sonic) let the Archie Sonic comic writers BASTARDIZE, RUIN & then ultimately KILL OFF the Freedom Fighters, including characters that SEGA of America itself personally created out of the "tiny animal" base template sprites of Ricky the Squirrel, Pocky, and Rocky that were Sonic's original friends even before two-tailed fox Miles "Tails" Prower was introduced (namely, Princess Sally Acorn as a deliberately gender bent Ricky [hence why she's sometimes referred to as the feminized Rikki outside of the U.S.], Bunnie Rabbot as a supplement for Johnny Lightfoot [both of whom were based on Pocky] & Rotor "Boomer" Walrus, whose European counterpart is known as Joe Sushi [both of which are based on Rocky]).

      @@TherealRNOwwfpooh Sounds great, although there is one glaring error. In your comment it reads as if Sega Technical Institute created the original Genesis/Megadrive games which is a misunderstanding. The Sonic Team in Japan created the original Sonic game, and then Yuji Naka (Game programmer) and Hirokazu Yasuhara (Level designer), two former members of Sonic Team left Japan to join Sega Technical Institute specifically to teach them how to make Sonic games for themselves. The product of this was Sonic 2 in spite of it being a difficult relationship due to culture clash and communication issues. However, although Sonic 2 was a huge success and Sega Technical Institute had learned a lot, the company's founder Mark Cerny had jumped ship and they were ultimately unable to make Sonic 3 without Yuji Naka and Hirokazu Yasuhara's assistance. Reluctant to go back to the states to work with Sega Technical Institute again, the original Sonic Team created Sonic 3 & Knuckles, except this time the Music was provided by Sega Technical Institute (allegedly with Michael Jackson) instead of Masato Nakamura (from the band, Dreams Come True) which is why the music sounds so different in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. If instead of Sonic Team developing Sonic 3, Sega Technical Institute had developed Sonic 3 then the resulting game would have shared more in common with other Sega Technical Institute games, such as Kid Chameleon, Sonic Spinball or Comix Zone, which are admittedly great games in their own right, they suffer from generally simpler programming techniques e.g. smaller sprites, lower frame-rates, control latency, sluggish character movement, etc, which result in a less impressive game, and since the game had to improve on the greatness of Sonic 2, development had to go back to Sega of Japan. Sega Technical Institute should not be credited for Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine either when it is in fact the Western release of Compile's Puyo Puyo game, which had some of the graphics replaced with Sonic characters in the Genesis release and Kirby characters in the Super Nintendo release. It's important to remember that the friction between Sega of Japan and Sega of America was misunderstandings due to culture and language under the pressure expected from competing to be the dominant gaming company

      @@nicholasthetaylor Um, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and other Sonic games are made by SEGA of America and SEGA Technical Institute. Sonic Team and SEGA of Japan made one Sonic game (before the questionable modernization of Sonic aka Sonic Adventure) without SEGA of America and SEGA Technical Institute developing and being associated that is Sonic CD.
      "The product of this was Sonic The Hedgehog 2 in spite of it being a difficult relationship, due to culture clash, and communication issues."
      Untrue, the difficult relationship started in 1995 during the development of Sonic X-Treme.
      "the company's founder Mark Cerny had jumped ship and they were ultimately unable to make Sonic 3 without Yuji Naka and Hirokazu Yasuhara's assistance."
      I need source of this one because I couldn't find it on the internet.
      Nope, SEGA Technical Institute created Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (and Knuckles). Um, the OST of Sonic 3 have always sounded like Michael Jackson's OST even before Michael Jackson, the OST of Sonic 3 is provided by SEGA of America and SEGA Technical Institute along with Yuji Naka, Naota Oshima, Hirokazu Yasuhara, and others (Japanese and American developers).
      "they suffer from generally simpler programming techniques e.g. smaller sprites, lower frame-rate, control latency, sluggish character movement, etc, which result in a less impressive game, and since the game had to improve on the greatness of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, development had to go back to SEGA of Japan."
      I have yet to wait for the source of your quote, you probably won't even mention of (where it came from). How it was resulted in a less impressive game when it's resulted as an impressive game. Nope, development still remained in SEGA of America and SEGA Technical Institute. Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima (including Hirokazu Yasuhara) were still around with SEGA of America and SEGA Technical Institute, they didn't go back to Japan after the development of Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
      Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Compile's Puyo Puyo game are both completely different games. Again, the friction between SEGA of Japan and SEGA of America weren't/aren't because of misunderstandings that you guys can't even back yourselves up. It's all because of the pitifulness, greediness, and stubbornness of SEGA of Japan (where it all started in 1995). SEGA of Japan have always hated SEGA of America because SEGA of America handled Sonic much better than SEGA of Japan did.

    Actually Melkac, Sally was owned by SoA--since she appeared in Fleetway's Sonic The Comic, AoStH: Christmas Blast, "SatAM", & Archie's comics--and if you remember your timeline, SoA existed before SoJ. Plus, Sonic--though created for game stardom by the Japanese--was conceptualized by both American and Japanese persons, with Americans being the original audience (hence why we got systems [Master System, GameGear, & Genesis], games [Sonic 1 & Sonic 2], and shows [[AoStH, "SatAM", & SU] first).

    • @JohnnyTheGamer
      @JohnnyTheGamer Рік тому

      Don't forget Sally appeared in some episodes of AoSTH Season 2. Weren't American developers involved in the development of Sonic The Hedgehog 1, hence why we got a promotional comic, and Greg Martin's Sonic was drawn because of Naoto Oshima's Sonic in concept arts/drawings looked weird (because SEGA of America had to soften him up). Especially Yuji Naka was worried how Sonic looked like in the US because it wouldn't sell copies of the blue blur himself before he changed his own mind, and he started liking Americanized Sonic.

    ClassicTeam: No. She wasn't. She was owned by manga company Shogakuken, from the day she was created until 1992, when the manga guest-starring Sonic was created. In 1993, Sega precured Amy from Shogakuken, planning to use her in Sonic CD. Oddly, despite the fact that we Americans already had a love interest for Sonic--in Sally Acorn--Amy was introduced in CD's American manuals as "Princess Sally" in response to SatAM airing on TV (whereas in European and Japanese manuals, Amy remained as Amy).

  • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
    @TherealRNOwwfpooh 15 років тому +1

    Of course, Amy's reception was less than well-received. For instance, a Games Radar article called Amy's introduction "the only bitter taste" in Sonic CD, but added that "she's just a pink hedgehog here and not a whiny, annoying brat like in Sonic Adventure."

    As for Madonna, the idea of using her was scrapped before the first Sonic game itself even released. I mean, to start off, Sonic himself--though JOINTLY made--was ORIGINALLY targeted towards Western audiences, so we in the States (and our neighbors in the UK) not only got the GAMES first (the first game started on the Master System & Game Game Gear in the West BEFORE the Japanese ported the MegaDrive over, rechristing it the SEGA Genesis), we also got cartoons and comics first.

    If I'm reading that correctly, ya. Except Amy (as far as I know) wasn't bought by Sega. She was created for the game Sonic CD that came out the same year SatAM and the Comic's where coming out. And there's no proof he likes or dislikes Amy, only speculation. Sally and Sonic, maybe... But, if I remember right, the SatAM Universe and the Game universe are two different things, so that's true SatAM-wise, but game-wise we don't know. XP
