10:07 Actually, the creator has moved on to creating an FPS Shooter for the Saturn since Z-Treme was met with a lot of unfounded criticism and he's not much of a Sonic fan. It's unclear if he'll return to the project.
Aw, that sucks. I quite enjoyed it. My only issue was that it was short and the map design could be a bit more clear.
@@redhotsonic hi red hot sonic. I need a bit of help. On the ps2 version of sonic heroes on team dark when it loads onto hang castle it loads for a sec then it crashes.
That one built on the Nights boss engine pissed Yuji Naka off so much he almost quit Sega.
Threatened to quit over the devs use of his nights engine without permission then Yuji makes the over world for sonic jam with the nights as a big FU and to say it is possible to make sonic work in 3d on the Saturn, imagine if sega wasn't feuding with its self we could of got a good Saturn sonic game with the nights engine
STI only had the nights engine for 2 weeks, and it was mostly just spent learning how it worked.
@@That_Guy- It wasn't the dev's fault, Bernie Stolar never asked Naka permission before he gave it to them. Then the one who was doing all the work on the project got extremely sick and couldn't finish it. IMHO they should have made Naka and Sonic Team do a 3D Sonic game first and have it ready by 1996 at the latest. Letting them do Nights Into Dreams left the Saturn without a 3D Sonic platformer for its entire lifespan. Alternatively, they could have had Traveler's Tales do a fully 3D Sonic platformer instead of Sonic Blast and Sonic R. They managed to achieve polygon transparencies and good graphics with Sonic R, it's just too bad all that effort went into a racing game instead of a platformer.
It's hard to know. Nights has a very short draw distance. 3D worlds weren't a good fit for Saturn. A 2D Sonic with fancier graphics would've done the trick. Or perhaps the Crash style of bendy corridors to hide draw distance and reduce load on system.
to think of that, how annoying must've been to program 3d graphics for the console back then
If Ztreme ever adds the fisheye lens, I will be ecstatic.
There won't, because Z-treme received a lot of undeserved negative criticism from all these toxic assholes insulting the dev.
X-Treme v40 already lags so much on real hardware which is why XL2 refused to add such thing.
@@alexk8792 Well as he said hismelf even if he had continued developing it it wouldn't have had it because it probably isn't possible, as the sprite characters aren't either.
It's kind of a shame that sonic xtream was never realised.
It looked truly interesting and it's nice to see that it at least has a prototype.
I can’t believe we have a clean sweep of software working on real hardware!
He installed a Phantom mod chip into the SEGA Saturn. Does that qualify as “real hardware”?
The second prototype you testes is not made by any in SEGA at all. It was made by POV (point of view), which was contracted to help out with the game.
2:27 >>> NOW LOADING >>>
very true cuz the sonic 06 loading screens take like 15 years to complete
Man, can you imagine a Saturn game like Z-xtreme where you can play as both Sonic and Tails on a split screen? That would probably be the killer app that Saturn missed.
Pd: man, those Saturn shots were very well made! Your videos are of a super professional quality and I love everything on your channel
7:02 Ah yes. Spring Yard Zone, my favorite country. Surprisingly, it has a high population with lots of friendly folks like buzz bombers, crabmeat, rollers, and spikes. Our country is home to plenty of bumpers. Not a single day goes by without hearing their bump sound.
Fact Check: The Sonic X-Treme Boss Engine was *not* based on NiGHTS.
Chris Coffin the coder has refuted such claims fully. It was mostly using tools created from Panzer Dragoon II - which Sonic Team also used for NiGHTS.
The full time window from when STI saw the NiGHTS engine code, to when executives ordered them to erase all copies (at the demands of Yuji Naka) was less than a week.
Some of this confusion comes from Christmas NiGHTS having a Sonic mode Easter Egg, which was mostly an internal snub by Naka to his former STI teammates, that Sonic Team was well ahead of where they were (to the detriment of course of Sega itself).
It's a real shame they Sega made no real effort into bringing out a decent Sonic game like this to the Saturn. It may have helped improve sales for the console. When both Saturn and Playstation were launched I went to my local "video shop" and rented both consoles before I decided which one to buy. This was before Sony released any serious 3D games and I actually preferred the Saturn at the time. I bought Saturn in January 1996. I still have that console in storage today. Just a few more great games could have saved Sega. What a waste.
The real reason why Sonic Xtreme game was never released for the Saturn was because at that point of time Sonic was the main rival for Mario and any Sonic game they released had to live up to the quality of the Mario game on the rival console which at the time Sega wasn't able to do. Sega just didn't have the time and resources to come up with a Sonic game that rivalled Mario 64.
Sega of America really didn't care about the Saturn at all. A lot of its big killer apps stayed Japan exclusive.
@@Klonoahedgehog It's not that Sega of America didn't care, It's just that Sega of Japan design the Saturn as a console to mainly fit the Arcade scenes at the time to emphasise on fighters and Shooters with great 2D capabilities and which Sega of America didn't want much to do with.
So what we ended up with was a console which Sega of America wasn't interested in what the console was designed for which resulted in a console that consisted mostly of terrible games which Sega of America thought was the right way to go because they were either digitised or in 3D despite it being a pile of crap.
@@neobogard There was a lot that the Saturn was capable of that was never realised due to lack of development support to third parties too as I understand it. Some of it's best 3D stuff features many work arounds.
You raise a good point though about the arcades. Saturn was quite the "2D Powerhouse" it has been said. I can't speak for Japan at the time but this came at a time arcades were dying off. I don't think the shoddy port of arcade flagship Virtua Fighter 1 helped either in that respect.
It also doesn't help how much Sega of Japan were screwing around Sega of America during the Saturn era. Sonic was much more successful in the west than the east, so Sonic took a backseat. Sega of Japan basically sacrificed every bit of goodwill they had with fans just so they could finally beat Nintendo in their home country. Which they did, as the Saturn outsold the N64 there. Too bad it cost them everything else.
I didn't know Sonic X-Treme prototypes existed. This is pretty awesome lol.
God I wish Sonic X-Treme wasn't cancelled
A little correction, the boss engine was not made with the nights engine. STI only had 2 weeks to work with it and it was mostly spent learning how it worked.
7:56 - 8:04 That accurately describes my first time playing Bubsy 3D. I loved it since then.
@@MochaFatTart The only one here who needs help is the one who isn't capable of respecting others' opinions just because they don't match the popular opinion in a particular subject, despite that opinions regarding said subject are completely subjective, and no one is either right or wrong about it. 3:19 RHS' best line: Gordon Benett! LOOK AT THAT FRAME-RATE!
This looks like a mix of Bug! And the floor from Nights (lovely game, weird feeling when ur not flying).
It's strange how the Sonic World from JAM runs so smoothly, it had a lot of potential to be the base of a Sonic3d.
That last one is pretty amazing! I especially appreciate the polygonal Sonic to the bitmap one for the game.
And it's really impressive considering that it's a fan project for the Sega Saturn, which was infamously difficult to develop 3D games for.
Sonic X-Treme had alot of potential, its sad that it got scrapped.
yeah the fisheye lens is such an interesting concept. It's like combining the 2d gameplay from previous titles with 3d and it's incredible. Idk how it will work in terms of going fast in gameplay but it seemed promising.
Redhotsonic: “why am I going to get a haircut?”
Me: “you do.”
Bullshit: "..."
You: "Makes absolutely no sense and I have no idea why I have 32 likes"
I still want to know more about the Spin Slash move. I have no idea what function it would’ve served. Also, Sonic Z-treme, while having a garbage name, looks super interesting. I’m glad people are speaking up about this game. I wish Sega had made this a full game.
The camera rotation in Zstreme shows that it was clearly based on the same framework used for NiGHTS and later Burning Rangers, so had bitch boy Yuji Naka not thrown a temper tantrum, that's likely what Xtreme would have looked like.
you two playing ztreme was so wholesome i loved it
1:05, amazing intro there. OW! I love the tune!! ^_^
5:50, this music fits Sonic X-Treme pretty well tbh.
9:09, 2 PLAYER?!! 0.0
9:58, YAY!!
Sonic X-Treme is very interesting with all the engine changes making it feel like a completely different game
This never showed up in my sub box. If it wasn't for the recommendations I would have missed this and that would have been awful because this video is great
I've gotta say, I've heard of this channel, but never watched it until now. I'm a part of the SRB2 community, and people have been talking about your channel or poking fun at it (in a good way). This is a good channel, I must say.
The build, with fully 3D (including Sonic) and no FE effect, looks pretty good. Perhaps not worthy of classic Sonic, but with another character, this could have fun final game.
"Wow! It took 30 seconds to long!"
This loading screen is longer than Sonic 06's!
Really interesting video! Always been fascinated by this game and it’s weird development, so cool to see it running on real hardware! Great overview of the different versions of the prototypes too
1st redhotsonic
Then jetpacktails
What's next. BLUECOLDKNUCKLES!
Well never know untill redhotsonic makes another channel.
Also 7:11 XD
I've been waiting a long time for this!
4:37 so now i reallize it was possible to play Minecraft in Sonic Xtreme
Looks like Z-Treme uses the actual 3D Sonic model from Jam/R. Nice.
you don't need a haircut
you need hot red hair dye.
and then get a red sonic costume so i could literally call you redhotsonic.
Look at Project SXU. It faithfully recreated Jade Gully and other levels.
You've earned a new subscriber. I love your dedication! Unfortunately, it seems that development of _Sonic Z-Treme_ has been abandoned for good, but hopefully the dev is onto bigger and better things as another comment alluded to.
The Saturn is underrated
I remember years ago me trying for weeks to get hands on the Jade Garden build.
Probably grabbed a ton of viruses along the way and then the Saturn emulator I used wasn't really doing well either but damn... That was one fun ride.
Really hope the guy behind it finishes Z-Stream one day, it looks good!
RIP sonic z-treme
being a remake of x-treme you were always doomed to the same fate
You do great on this stuff, RHS. Keep up the good work.
2:45 that's old CD players for ya
Superb video - very well done mate. And wow, Z-Treme runs incredibly well in split screen, that would have been phenomenal in 1996!
A trip to the Saturn, Sega Saturn. I also like what you did in your scene set: "X Marks Z Spot!" Going back to the poll question, it sounds better to say X Marks Zee Spot, even though I pronounce that letter as Zed since I was extremely little.
7:11 didn't expect to see that.
Was nice to see Millie play a Sonic game with you. What was her true reaction after that test run?
I'm glad things went the way they did, I really think if this released it would've hurt Sonic more than help
"Wow, that took about 30 seconds to load"
sonic 06 in a nutshell
its impressive how the z-treme one runs on the real sega saturn, considering its has full 3D models and, well, its the saturn! kind of showcase that we could had a 3D sonic main title before the dreamcast, if sega was a little less sega >:T
I've been following the dead son of the Sonic family for well over a decade. It's development life is so convoluted that just now and here I get to learn that there WAS a fisheye lens-involving proto for the Saturn! And also that Jade Gully ALSO had a Saturn release! WOW!
Thank you so much for this video, Red.
'carelessly tosses disk' "We're done with the prototypes."
OMG I NEVER KNEW SONIC Z-STREAM WAS A THING UNTILL NOW (i knew about x-tream tho) but whow thanks!! :D
8:57 what a nice throwback to super mario 64
"In loving memory of segata sanshiro"
RedHotSonic's captions taught me something, then I forgot
Sonic ztreme is the sonic game we deserved earlier
Yess finally. Thank you redhotsonic. I was really curious about this game years ago.. still am tbh
I love Saturn, its great for 2D but these just prove the Saturn could never have made full scale 3D Sonic adventure. These are tiny 3D spaces, much like the hub in Sonic Jam.
Bug! and Bug Too! would like to have a word with you...
EDIT: To be fair though, these games used narrow 3D paths and there was no free movement (although Bug Too! actually has some semi-open spaces to run around, mainly hub worlds and some parts of the levels)
The creator or Sonic Z-treme being from Spring Yard Zone actually made me laugh.
Wow that prototype made with the boss engine actually looks really clean, i understand why sega wanted the developers to make the entire game in that engine it looks good
*THE MAN BEHIND THE*
sonic x-treme project
You didn't cover all of the builds for Sonic X-Treme - there is one build that is more complete, but it WON'T work on Saturn as it is a PC build. It's a more complete version of the second build and you should DEFINITELY check it out - there is a video of gameplay of it on UA-cam - it has ACTUAL levels with interactability.
I have a Phoebe so I knew about the other 3 betas working on real hardware, but I had NO idea that Z-Treme would work and that's FANTASTIC news! Thanks for that.
-Anyhow do a follow up video on the PC build of the beta.
"You didn't cover all of the builds for Sonic X-Treme - there is one build that is more complete, but it WON'T work on Saturn as it is a PC build." - Well, that answers your question to as why I didn't cover it; as it's on PC. I am aware of there being more on PC. May cover them on my secondary channel as a live stream soon.
X Marks Z Spot heh i see what you did there.
im actually quite surprised it works on real hardware! now we just need more saturn hacks in the future...
Ah, Sonic X-Treme, the infamous cancelled prototype Sonic game. Not to be confused with Sonic Extreme, the relatively unknown cancelled prototype Sonic game. It's good to see it running on real hardware after all these years.
This is me whenever I get hurt by a bully in school 7:12
Woah, you did the epic.
Now I’m actually wondering why the game got scrapped, the prototype looked very promising.
2:23 redhotsonic:...a glimpse of what we could have had... me: nothing. No one: literally no one: redhotsonic: Oh come on!
Fun fact: The Sonic model in X-Treme was eventually used......in Sonic's Schoolhouse of all things.
"Did I say Earth? I meant Saturn!"
can we all agree that this man has the best transitions?
Even Version 40 is still an awesome peice of technology for the Saturn! I mean to imagine this could have been what 3D Sonic gameplay could standardlu be like this? It's fascinating. And I kinda wanna own and play em all they're a charming
Evidently there are also builds of the game for PC, as (oversimplification incoming) evidently that was the manner in which it was developed.
"good luck."
This game would've been very good
What I would’ve loved to see was Sonic Adventure on the Saturn before it became Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. As far as I know there’s only pics but no actual gameplay footage. We did get to see Shenmue on the Saturn though and it looked pretty good.
And now, on todays episode of "Oh hey, that's where that SRB2 Character Wad comes from!"
I wonder if the prototypes were developed in parallel to shop various potential gameplay models for 3D sonic.
This may just be because I live in Australia but zed-streme sounds more natural to me.
3:28 that's so funny!!
redhotsonic in 2069: The entire space-time continuum - But does it work on Real Hardware?
Is that a 1991 sonic plush I see at 9:30? I have 1 and my little girl has one to keep mine safe 😂
I had one, my brothers kept killing him by way of hanging from the bedroom light cord. I think my nephew has him now, after years of him being lost in an attic somewhere. Sonic, not the nephew.
@@stephandolby my little one loved mine so much we got her one and even found the matching tails plush to go with it ♥️

JADE1 = Jade Gully Zone
CRYST2 = Crystal Frost Zone
RED = Red Sands Zone
GALAXY = Galaxy Fortress Zone
this game had really fresh ideas that at the same time truly hard to be executed
At 2:57 what's that song? It's been bugging me since I first heard it forever ago
There was one prototype they ended up using in Nights. Hills and purple out of bounds. (Edit: I posted that before it came up in the vid.)
The location of the creator absolutely got me 😂 6:59
2:30 Ahh That Method (Why Did You Knock The CRT Instead Of The Console)
It’s nice when modded rom hacks and such on real hardware also great video as usual
Reminds me a bit of Mario 3D World meets Little Big Planet kinda 3D gameplay. Really neat concept for the mid-late 90s. :)

"But I know what question stands in your mind! When am I going to get a haircut?- I mean, does it work on real hardware?"
;)
That's crazy... I knew the XTreme demos would work. I have heard as much. but I really didn't think Z-treme would.
Sonic X-Treme might be a good game
Seeing X-Treme Sonic only makes me want to play SRB2 again.
4:57 ‘Eyyy!
I hated the idea of Sonic Xtreme first with the fisheye lens, then in the second demo with the weird level layout and Master System-tier textures. Having said that, I was incredibly impressed with Sonic Z-treme and even though it's not my cup of tea, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the developer in getting that kind of performance out of the Saturn. I think the perfect 3D Sonic game for the Saturn would have had the Flicky collection and level themes of Sonic Blast, but in full 3D like Sonic Jam. What I'd really love to see is a Sonic game on Sega's model 1 (or 32X) in full 3D with flat-shaded polygons.
Please do this with sonic adventure prototypes
first thing i did the very day i bought a modded saturn? burn both x-treme last prototype and z-treme demos I had for some reason, to honor the legacy of the game that never was.
I also had a great fucking time playing 2-p mode on z-treme with some friends
0:17 nice joke earth I meant saturn
People forget if this released before Crash or Mario 64 I reckon people would have still been quite impressed with it. I mean imagine if this were late 1995 and 3d being experimented those days, it probably would have been looked at somewhat fondly at the time.
Honestly, even if it did I still don't think it'd even compare to something like Jumping Flash.Even then, once those games did come back X-treme would still look bad by comparison.Sonic games don't exactly have a short shelf life after all.
Honestly, everything I've ever seen of Xtreme looks more like a tech demo of the Saturn's hardware capabilities than something you'd ever want to actually play.
it was going to be released after both of them tho
Dont worry fans recreated it
@@jeffreywilliams1347Sonic X-treme never progressed past the tech demo state. They were not able to get the levels to run on Sega Saturn.
There are actual level layouts drawn by Sonic 2's level designer and they are available online. But they were not implemented and its unclear if those levels can even run on Sega Saturn
Yes, the revealed footage of Sonic X-treme was just tech demo footage. They had difficulty even getting Sonic to move on Saturn.
There are also only a few fully drawn level layouts. Practically no progress was made with Sonic X-treme development other than graphics (which may of changed anyway)
