Great vid again. When I bought from Todd he told me I could pick one and one alone as he didn't want two covers in the same state owned by one person. I had picked number 323 from him at that time for 1K and he was going to mail it to me. So I waited for that. But also that month after we spoke he came to San Diego at the Old Convention Center and brought a stack of art. in there was the 316 cover. I held it a long time. Todd did not know who I was. I had my friend come over and I gave him 1K to buy it for me. As he gave the cash my badge flipped and he saw my name. Todd gave my buddy the cash back and said "Lance you already have the 323 on hold". "No two covers with one collector". Busted !! Todd was always a master business man from the very start. Sometimes you can't always See Todd Buy Todd. Lol
Holy crap what a story Lance! I always appreciated his business sense, even the missteps, because he was smart enough to learn from them. What a choice in cover, obviously it would be nice to own 316 too, and you had to try 😎 Thanks for sharing!!
Cool video! Personally I don't like the cover of Marvel Tales 236. Proportion-wise, being in front of Wolverine, Spidey is too small. 235 is a better pick. I also like the one with Captain Stacy.
I could watch videos like this all-day, so… please make more! Very much agree with your 300/301 sentiment and it’s funny how the rank can change day to day, they’re all just that great! Scary how many of your top 3 are in my top 3. Great session buddy, keep ‘em coming!
The reality is that any McFarlane cover can sit n this list. He has no bad ones. I totally agree that the darkness of his Spiderman #1 cover, and how he depicted the character in his run on that title, is absolutely the way Marvel should have run with Spiderman moving forward. It created some intrigue that hadn’t been seen in Spiderman before. And it contrasted exceptionally well with his “flip side” persona domestic life being married to Mary Jane. I’ve lived ever since hoping someone will that dark Spiderman back. But ALL McFarlane covers are in my most favourite list. Great Show!
great video Dave! Hitting that expertise on Todd! I couldn't agree more with the picks. For me my favorite is always gonna be Spider-Man #1 cause it's attached to my childhood but I gotta agree and think Hulk 340 is objectively his best cover.
I always wanted the Amazing Spider-Man 328 as a kid. But comic stores over inflated the prices until the 2000s when the comicbook $ started dying down. Managed to find one at $8
AWESOME Video…! ASM 328 has been my All time favorite ever since I laid eyes on it at 11 years old…even got a 6 foot mural of it…makes my heart skip a beat every time I see it..!
It's so cool to see the OA next to the finished cover - you can really see the effect of colors. Like ASM 316 I LOVE that shade of purple they chose. And Hulk 340 could've gone so many different ways with that much background to fill, but the gradient blue is just PERFECT. Super fun vid, Dave!!
Great cover picks!!! My first Todd mcfarlane comic is Spider-Man # 314 hydroman cover then the hulk # 340 when I was in high school wow that was a long time
Man talk about a tough task to decide on a top 10 best McFarlane covers of all time. I am definitely with you on your choices I think my top 3 would be ASM 316, Hulk 340 and Batman 423 they are just such iconic covers that will stand the test of time! Great video Dave!!
I started going through the books and picking them out and by the time I was done I had 100 covers...which doesn't make for a short video😂. Thanks for watching Ryan and for being a card carrying member of the STBT society!
Funny, the #10 book with Spidey, Wolverine, and Storm was one of my first 3 books back when I was 8 or 9. I want to say it was a reprint of an X-Men book that some Spidey in it. Not a call out guy, and I am prob wrong. Killer cover. Thanks for the vid!!
@@WestCoastDAVEngers For sure! I remember seeing the cover, and then reading it...what happened to the killer cover art??? Was a shock, but I'll never forget it! Love comics for life 😊
Ha I love 311 as well. In the early 90s me and some friends got this book at San Diego comic con and got it signed by Stan Lee and todd. We also got our picture with Stan Lee this is one of my favorite memories.
Great list Dave and so happy that the majority are from the Hulk and Spider-Man run (and not unexpected given how great they were). On the Hulk, upon reflecting and re-reading his Hulk run, Todd didn't always draw him so huge and started with Grey Hulk quite lean and less monstrous. Over the course of the run, he evolved his size and Frankenstein like head/face that he had in his final issue, Hulk 345.
You're right about that, I definitely gravitate towards the end of his Hulk run, I reread the X-Factor issues recently on my team up video with @read.your.comics and I didn't love them as much as 340-345
I was like 95% sure about your top 2 so you missed a great chance to throw an absolute curveball and put Quasar 14 up there as your #1. Great video, Dave. I’m going to have to go back and pick out my Top 10 so I can argue with you about what cover is better. 😅
the cover with Storm and Wolverine is interesting design because I would have put Spidey top or middle because he is swinging and Wolverine is a shorter character. putting Spidey at the bottom is an interesting decision that works.
If I were to break the “no homage” rule it would be Spider-Man 13. When that book dropped and it was the already classic #1 homage but the black suit my preteen mind was blown! But yeah… everyone should go checkout our Hulk 340 discussion. We spent a significant amount of time on the cover alone.
Same here, if I were to break the rule, his Spawn 220 run covers would all be up there, along with Spidey 13. Maybe that's the new top ten list I do... Todd Homaging Todd. And yes, our video should be watched by the world!
I really wish Todd had done the asm 327 magneto acts of vengeance story too so we could get his take on different characters. As well as filling in from all the Larsen issues from 329 to 350 so we could have gotten a Todd punisher, carnage cameo, the return of the sinister six storyline and a Doom on 350. That would have been amazing!
311 might be one of the ONLY covers that I appreciate more with the color. Todd takes his seat next to Escher and Otomo w/ that one. Also, you might want to check your edit on this video right around 21:32 - clearly something weird happening there 🤔
Did you pick up your Spider-Man 1 cover spiral notebooks from the school supply section of Target? I couldn't resist when I saw them last month. Picked up four!
I totally get ya Dave! I too, am enthralled by those intense, angry villain covers like ASM #313. I love his creature and monster design, so that's why I enjoy his Spawn #4 Violator cover so much! I HAD to get a slab of it with a green signature! It's perfect! And get outta here Comic Tim! Ya just gonna f#@k up the video! Go get your own channel! LOL! 🤣
Yeah Spawn 4 is a killer one, especially if you think about how you reacted to it as a kid. Nice pickup on the signed book! I'd love to see Todd do a straight up monster book. At least we got some killer monster figures from the toy line back in the 90's! Oh Comic Tim...he's a nuisance
Great video, bad list (obviously everybody's opinion differs). Plus rule 3 is just silly where Todd has to ink the cover himself. There's Quasar 14, Conan 241, Marvel Tales 224, and a ton of other Spawn covers to choose from.
Nice Top Ten. I'd have shoehorned in his Detective 577 cover, too. Batman 423 gets all the shine, but 'Tec 577 is just dripping with pathos. Batman holding a smoking gun while draped over his own parents grave? That's practically Shakespearean.
It truly is a great and classic cover, I would put it in my top 20 for sure, who knows, maybe tomorrow I look at it and it's top 3. That's the thing about his art to me, it never gets old and it evolves in my mind over time!
It's called Todd McFarlane Spider-Man Artist's Edition, it's available for your LCS to order, but all major book retailers will have it, if not in store, online
If we're talking without the caveats in the video? Spawn 1 is up there at the top, then his Batman 423 homage (Spawn 230) and then Spawn 39 which is Capullo and Todd inks. What about you?
Great vid again. When I bought from Todd he told me I could pick one and one alone as he didn't want two covers in the same state owned by one person. 235 is a better pick. I also like the one with Captain Stacy.
Pretty solid list. #1 is absolutely undeniable.
Technically one 'could' deny it...but they'd be wrong! :)

Hopefully this video does well enough I can do more! I think our Todd love is similar just as our movie taste is similar...cuz we frienzzzzz

I think 316 is my favourite Todd cover. But there is so many. I need the art book so badly! Much love for both Todd and Dave 👍
Yes, I agree you do need that book!🕷️
It's so cool to see the OA next to the finished cover - you can really see the effect of colors. Like ASM 316 I LOVE that shade of purple they chose. And Hulk 340 could've gone so many different ways with that much background to fill, but the gradient blue is just PERFECT. Super fun vid, Dave!!
Those 2 specifically needed the right colors and damn if they didn't do a fine job at that!
Great cover picks!!! My first Todd mcfarlane comic is Spider-Man
# 314 hydroman cover then the hulk # 340 when I was in high school wow that was a long time

It definitely reprints one of those early X-men Spidey team-ups, that cover will forever be ingrained in my brain
@@WestCoastDAVEngers For sure! I remember seeing the cover, and then reading it...what happened to the killer cover art??? Was a shock, but I'll never forget it! Love comics for life 😊
Todd is really the best cover artist in history. IMHO
I'm gonna go ahead and AGREE BIGTIME

Great vid, brother. 316 is a homage of 308!
I always forget that Todd tested that cover out before, but nailed it on 316!
@@WestCoastDAVEngers NAILED IT on 316
Great books, and thanks for the knowledge ❤🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️
This man has the face and voice of an angel. And his content is pretty damn good too. Todd's spidey is what got me into comics.
Who paid you to say that??? :)
Great list! Fun watch 👍🏼👍🏼🎃💕

It definitely spoke to me for diff reasons, but that's great insight you point out

My brain thought Comic Tim said Todd "McWeirdless" lol
You never know with that guy
I also enjoy the way he hid spiders in his asm covers.
I really wish Todd had done the asm 327 magneto acts of vengeance story too so we could get his take on different characters. I would LOVE to see Todd doing Carnage, Doom & Punisher. But still, I am happy that it's Larsen doing most of that, then into Bagley.
311 might be one of the ONLY covers that I appreciate more with the color. Todd takes his seat next to Escher and Otomo w/ that one.

And don't forget Kaluta too! 311 is such a killer! - I tried to edit him out but my computer has a stroke every time I hit the delete button
Spawn 216 is one of my top 10
That's a great cover with ThE fReAk!
Did you pick up your Spider-Man 1 cover spiral notebooks from the school supply section of Target? I couldn't resist when I saw them last month. Picked up four!
Damnit I totally forgot to, someone showed them to me and I spaced on going to grab em. I will try this week, thanks for the reminder!

I enjoy Todd covers of characters he does t normally draw like the asm red skull, sabertooth, the xmen and cap.
Yeah the assassin nation plot story line was perfect for that!
I picked this marvel tales 236 up recently in a mark jewelers insert and I'm sending it in to get slabbed soon.
Nice video, but a closer look at the covers would have been great.
There's a lot of not cover in the frame.
Nice Top Ten. I'd have shoehorned in his Detective 577 cover, too. Batman 423 gets all the shine, but 'Tec 577 is just dripping with pathos. Batman holding a smoking gun while draped over his own parents grave? That's practically Shakespearean.

Thanks Dave great video. hahahaha
Always liked #'s: 317, 318, and 323. I feel #300 is way more iconic than SM #1, but whatever. Not too much bad TM.
That's the beauty of how good his work was, we all feel differently about our favorites!
Been trying to put together a 9.6 white page newsie run and the #325 is a hard book to find in a 9.6 white page newsie without signatures.
What is that HC with all the OA in it? That thing is beautiful!!
That's the Spider-Man Mcfarlane artist edition! It's also a 5k Subscriber giveaway prize!
where did you buy that black book full of tod comic book covers

What is your favorite spawn cover dave?

Oooh my, I could not decide.... I like the spawn 230 like batman 423
