Why my meatball sandwich has no meatballs in it.

  • Meatballs are amazing but ever thought about why we use them in sandwiches? Restaurants and Italian families often have excess meatballs on hand. Putting them in a sandwich is a delicious way to use them up. But if I'm making the meatballs just for the sandwich...why not switch up the shape in order to improve on an already amazing sandwich.
For the sauce: Add the tomatoes, butter, onion, garlic, oregano, and salt to a pot over medium-low heat. Simmer while stirring for around 20 minutes. Remove the onion and garlic from the sauce. Set the sauce aside.
For the meat: I used 1 lb. of beef and 1 lb. of pork. Beat one egg and add any seasonings you usually use for meatballs. I used garlic powder, onion powder, herbs de provence, parmesan, black pepper, cayenne, and salt. Mix and form your meat planks/slabs/logs. Form them slightly larger than your bread since they will shrink. These shapes will provide a few advantages over meatballs.
Sear the meat logs in a cast iron until browned on both sides. Let the meat finish cooking in the tomato sauce, which is simmering in the pot over.
Bake your bread, add the meat with some mozzarella, parm, basil, and banana peppers. Enjoy. This meatball sub is fantastic.

So the shape of my meat technically isn't a ball. But I have a few reasons for that. By making the meat more horizontal, I have even distribution of the meat through each bite. When I take a bite, no meatballs are pushed off the sandwich since the meat is all one mass. If you liked this, subscribe for more.

Good idea, making the meat to fit better onto the bun. I’m not a meat eater but I love this concept.

Thanks Sunny! It helped the structural integrity of the sandwich.

I love that you let it finish cooking in the sauce and then added the cheese there too. Looks great!

Thanks! Broiling the cheese would have been nice too but my smoke alarm tends to go off whenever my broiler is on, even for only 3 minutes. No smoke or anything, just the intense heat makes the alarm go.

I'm getting SO HUNGRY watching this, the meatball sub was my favorite sub to order at Subway back in the day! You've definitely reinvented the classic "Meatball Sub - But Better" - into a Meatlog Sub! Haha, and there is no such thing as too big a meatball! Great recipe Jacob!

Haha thanks Dan. Yeah Meatlog doesn't sound the most appetizing, but I think it's a practical way to make this sandwich! And yeah Subway was my first introduction to the meatball sub!
