Hey Luke, just a reminder, Scandinavia is a very diverse group of countries. Denmark (my home, and also the place where the story takes place currently) is basically flat land, and used to be mostly just forest back then.
The flat land makes for excellent farmland, which is what you're seeing here.
The difference between Denmark and let's say Norway, is night and day. You cross a very narrow sea, and you're immediately met with mountainous regions filled with fjords and lush hillsides.
We Danes are often envious of that.
Sweden, while still flatter and is occupied with more forests than Norway, also has a much more diverse nature than Denmark.
As of today, very little untouched nature remains in Denmark. But we have enough for previously inhabitants such as wolves to thrive, and we're trying to bring them back to our country after they were hunted to extinction, just like in England.
Any way, hope any of this helps.

Thorfinn is underdeveloped as an adult. His growth was presumably stunted from near starvation throughout his puberty. He always hunted his own food, and didnt know how to cook so he always had just meat - and usually just rabbit at that, which is not nutritious. He didnt trust others to eat with them. Remember in S1 where he was so surprised by the soup Cnut made? He never gets veggies like that normally. He is only 153cm and not growing anymore. It's a shame because he mightve been as big as Thors if he had a good life.

After attacking Canute, which is punishable by death, Canute basically chose to forgive him for slicing him across the face given the circumstances and handed out a lighter punishment, making Thorfinn a slave. That led to him being bought by this guy as a worker for his farm.

26:53 Actually, there were bears in the British Isles at least until 1500 years ago.
31:59 Thorfinn would have been severely punished for trying to kill a prince, the likely punishment being death. Remember that Canute asked that Thorfinn not be killed, remember? So the worse punishment for Thorfinn short of killing him would have been to sell him as a slave.
33:07 The Thorfinn that appeared when the slave master called him appeared relatively short to me, at least for viking standards. Also, Leif has no way of knowing how much Thorfinn would grow up.

With the wild animals mentioned in the series, you have to realize that bears and wolves not existing in Britain is a fairly modern thing. They both went extinct on the island sometime in the middle ages (Wolves later than bears), but during the time in which Vinland Saga is set, around the turn of the eleventh century, they could still be found in Britain relatively easily.

    • @charlesdemarest1171

I think it's more of a bad interpretation of why she was even talking about bears. If historically, they weren't really around anymore, her speaking about how bears eat before hibernating would just be something she learned somewhere, and she was making small talk. The line didn't necessarily mean there were bears still around.

I don't think that's a satisfying answer, surely if Canute actually wanted to pardon Thorfinn he could've sold him into slavery and then discretly bought him back then free him? Unless you'd say that he didn't care enough to go through all that hassle, in which case fair enough.

Basically Thorfinn was enslaved for stabbing the king (Canute) so Leif is searching for him again. Also, Thorfinn and Einar are like 18-20 years old (I don't remember exactly) so it wasn't THAT much of a time-skip. And yes, Thorfinn is short and so he will for the rest of the anime lol.

remember the "carve it" poem. in fact, if you can, come back and watch the carve it poem after the season ends. it's very rewarding to do so.
but oh my god finally, Einar is here. he's one of my favorite characters in this series, you'll see why. there really is a horrible realism to the way the deaths of Einar's mother and sister go. the arrow probably wasn't aimed at his mother in the first place... it was probably a stray shot, but that's all it takes. a raid like this is so violent that there's just no safety. and the way Einar and Lotta both freeze up, because the idea of leaving their mom behind is so unfathomable, they can't do it while she's still breathing. and if you remember what Einar's mother said about him in the scene prior... he's a big guy, sure, but he's no good in a fight. violence doesn't come as a natural impulse to him... he has to really convince himself to try and harm another person. it would be so easy to criticize Einar for not doing enough, or not doing it quick enough, but he is a better kind of person than these men, and it hurts to see someone so used to decency being treated this way.
as for his age, I think Einar's supposed to be somewhere in his 20s. not as ridiculous as if the show was trying to convince us he was in his teens or anything, but yeah... the anime gave him a pretty mature appearance for his age. still, in his attitude, you can tell he hasn't experienced this much horrible behavior from other people before. a lot of the things he's experiencing would've been inconceivable to him before now.
and yeah, now we have Thorfinn, in his post-Askeladd era. I think we can assume that enslavement was the lightest punishment Canute could finagle for a guy who stabbed royalty in the face.
also, not necessarily a demand or anything, but my god, it kills me to see the ED get shut off after the episode. this one more than probably any other, for me. most don't bother me too much, but Vinland Saga season 2 has a tone, and this ED responds to that call, every time. like, in this episode, the lyrics seem to be responding to Einar's circumstances. during later events, they may respond to other events. many characters take their turn with the meaning. it never gets any less significant. just... on your own time, please listen to it often.

As far as the bears in England thing goes, while bears don't currently live in England, they have in the past (the closest idea is as far back 425 AD), there's even bears on certain English flags from medieval times. Apparently the last bear to die in England was in the 10th century, so considering Vinland would've taken place in 1013 AD, they would've had some documentation that bears existed, though yeah, I don't think a random villager would have any idea what a bear was unless they went outside England, but maybe they had folktales about them, idk.

This is a little bit of original research, because I was curious. The "carve it" bits at the beginning of the episode are in Icelandic, which is the closest surviving language to Old Norse (and of course, it's thematically fitting as well because Thorfinn is from Iceland). I decided to look up who voiced them; turns out it's some guy from the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to his very official Twitter account he spent some time at the Icelandic embassy in Japan around the time the episode would've been in production. So I guess they just went there and were like "heyy could anyone voice this for us lol", which I think is kinda sick actually, lmao. Halldór Elís Ólafsson is the name.

Thorfinn was enslaved for attacking Canute, an act of Mercy by the king since he shouldve been killed for that. And Thorfinn was a warrior, it's normal for him to LOOK older than he actually is. You know, its funny. We danes are extremely proud of our heritage as vikings. And you get basically no representation in popular media, but you hear about a freaking viking manga coming up and you go hell yeah! Then as you watch it its all about how evil the danish are and theain character is freaking icelandic.

You need to understand the show title "Vinland Saga". Saga means dramatic story kind of. It is a story/journey to Vinland. So all those Viking Slavery just context in the show.

It's been 9 to 15 months since the end of S1. (I can't remember the exact length of time, someone correct me below) Also Einar is 20, roughly the same as Thorfinn.

Calm down😅it's only been a year or two since season 1 ended, and Thorfinn is still in his teens. Thorfinn was scheduled to be executed for attempting to murder Prince Cnut, but Cnut prevented this and instead granted him slavery as a minimal punishment.
The biggest attraction of the second season of Vinland Saga is the conversations between the characters. Just pay attention to the casual exchanges of words and psychological descriptions.

This underrated show is special. Don't worry, every questions you had will be answered in next next episodes in the season. If not it will answered in next seasons. Just watch it and focus to it.
Don't expect anything. Also, If you see happy moments it's mean it's gonna be tragic.

@@CSM_Kobeni I agree. I was almost jumping into farmland saga boat aswell bc i waited for every episode so badly and honestly seeing thorfinn getting beaten was not easy to watch. I would say around ep6 7 or so i was deeply hooked and already placed it above s1. There was some g fuel kids on patreon already complaining how slow s1 was🥶

It is not possible to say exactly when and where bears died out, most say they went extinct in the early medieval period - between about 425 and 594 AD in the UK.

It's a bit of a hidden gem, it went under the radar, but you should definitely give a go to Grimgar Of Fantasy and Illusions.
It's an Isekai, a bit on the short side with 12 episodes, but it's unique, beautiful, and amazingly powerful. It starts slow, but you will love the characters.

It seems to me that bears will have same story as wolves. They were in England in 11th century and then went extinct.

I'm pretty sure Thorfinn got thrown into slavery as punishment for what he did to Canute in season 1. For attempting to kill Canute . In a way.. even though still messed up, Thorfinn was spared . Thorfinn could have been excuted or worse tortured to death for what he did to Canute. Slavery is still bad obviously. It's still messed up for Thorfinn but the farm dose change him. I won't say anymore. Because I'm afraid of spoiling anything. You're about to witness one of greatest character arcs and character development to exist in a story. To me it's that good. That's how good Vinland Saga season 2 is. I hope we get a season 3&4 of Vinland Saga soon. There's still more to the story to adapt into Anime and the Manga to Vinland Saga is still ongoing. Thorfinn from Vinland Saga remains really short even throughout the entirety of the whole series, because he's malnourished and was growth stunted as a result. He's a small man. Look up his height on google. You'll be surprised.
