    The funny thing about what was 'missing' from season 1 is that the answer is "Thorfinn's development" but that's the amazing narrative work behind how the whole first season is the prologue. Thorfinn's lack of development was an essential part of setting up what's happening now. What's really great about it is it makes the most sense; as you pointed out he's only known war since he was six years old -- in many ways, he's still six, mentally -- he spent 11 years not developing as a person and that actually makes sense because he was a child thrust into war who had nothing to develop *on*.
    It's so wonderfully done; the only thing missing from season 1 was intentionally missing.

    I just keep noticing things about this episode... like how Thorfinn is still appearing as a child in his dream sequences. it's the same as when Thors appeared before him on the boat in episode 8, or when Thorfinn dreamed of Vinland in episode 10. I think Thorfinn was still stuck in his childlike mental state, but here we also see him dreaming of how he spent his time as a teenager/young adult. his concept of himself is finally expanding to include this portion of his life, painful as that may be.
    and that makes it really sweet that Einar can't actually bring himself to hurt Thorfinn. Einar misses his mom, and his younger sister. on some level, saying things to another person that his mom used to say to him, and being protective and caring, are probably super cathartic things for him. Einar is providing Thorfinn with a lot of the things he's missing, that part is obvious, but it also goes both ways. Einar is missing the people he's lost, and Thorfinn desperately needs someone to teach him all this really important stuff he missed.
    honestly, for me, this ties into what you were saying at the end of the video, about how season 1 wouldn't have made it into your top 5 anime list on it's own. I think that's exactly why, for as satisfyingly as it was written, it's appropriate to call the last episode of season 1 the end of the prologue.
    seasons 1 and 2 are like a call and response. so much of what happened in season 1 is being referenced and expanded upon here. season 1 is foundational, but now we're starting to build upon it, and it all hits so well _because_ the first season took all that time. we have a full 24 episodes of established material on Thorfinn... and to me, Thorfinn is actually an excellent example of how a person's stagnation can also be an intentional and essential part of their characterization.
    in season 1, Askeladd is the guy who does the most growing, and developing, and changing. meanwhile, Thorfinn's main established character trait is his stubborn tenacity, and inability to be diverted from his chosen goal. Thorfinn is dogged, to an insane degree... he doesn't let up until Askeladd literally dies. he was working on that one task for the majority of his life. his entire childhood was consumed by this.
    the complexity of Thorfinn's character mostly comes from the things that were done to him, and how each subtle contributing factor only made him dig his heels in even more. Thorfinn himself is stagnant, but that response is actually crazy interesting... especially in contrast with a mutable character like Askeladd.
    but now it's finally Thorfinn's turn to develop.

    • @l0kk016
      @l0kk016 5 днів тому +1

      And he doesn't appear as any moment in his childhood in the dreams either, it's very specifically how he looked that time he tried to save the old woman and her daughter...
      That time he let out a sigh and just started going along with the army is visibly the moment he gave up

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 5 днів тому

      @@l0kk016 yessss, and that moment has such relevance to this episode, because that was the moment that Thorfinn decided to cut off his emotional connection to the same kind of motherly element that Einar would do anything to hold onto. Einar was raised with it, and can replicate it, and Thorfinn now needs that, because he didn't have it at all. and that was the moment when he chose to destroy that connection within himself. it's to the point where he doesn't even ask about Helga or Ylva when he meets up with Leif near the end of season 1... he doesn't even consider them. but Einar is perfect for showing what Thorfinn robbed himself of.

    also, I want to point out some cool presentation points for this episode!
    - I love the shot of that hedgehog carrying its baby as Einar scolds Thorfinn for not thanking Pater, like, the parental reflections in both of them are a lot of the point in this episode, and this way of alluding to it is very cute.
    - in Thorfinn's dream, that POV shot of him running at those soldiers is the same as the one from when he retrieved the head with the helmet that Askeladd asked him for. it's a really cool callback.
    - I love the way the sound of chirping crickets bookends that nighttime scene with Thorfinn and Einar, and also creates continuity between reality and Thorfinn's dreams. you can tell that, to Thorfinn, these feel incredibly real. and it's to the point where real things, like the sounds at night, or the threatening feeling of Einar's grip on his neck, are probably mixed right in. that's probably why it didn't wake him... Einar trying to strangle him might've even triggered his PTSD in his sleep.
    - I also love the implication that Snake carries a similar energy to Askeladd. I mean, he's a clearly experienced fighter, and he leads a group of men who seem to defer to him a lot... but he also tripped Thorfinn's threat level switch, and he reacted on instinct, in a way that being mundanely slashed with a sword wouldn't do on its own.
    this is just a really good episode.

      It's really wild how nothing Fox did managed to even register as a threat for Thorfinn. But literally the very first attack by Snake - and one that clearly wasn't aimed to hit - instantly reverted Thorfinn's subconscious to his warrior habits.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 6 днів тому +3

      @@bohdanpyzh2712 I agree, and I'd even go one step deeper, and say that Thorfinn could tell Fox wasn't going to be a fatal threat to him _because_ Fox had a problem with Thorfinn on an emotional level.
      like, Fox is pissed that Thorfinn won't be afraid, or even act intimidated for him. Thorfinn also remembers the anger and frustration he felt, when someone wouldn't feel the way he wanted them to feel as he lashed out in anger. at that point, you don't want the other person dead nearly as much as you want them to display the emotional response you're looking for.
      so as long as Thorfinn isn't giving Fox what he wants, he's at least safe from death. harm is another story, but Thorfinn can take that.
      I think Snake registered differently to Thorfinn because he literally just arrived in this situation. he has no emotional stake in this at all. and his attitude supports this. he's cool and collected. even with his own men, he deals the damage he means to, he does it efficiently, and he gets the response he's looking for. so when he goes for his sword, Thorfinn has every reason to believe that he needs to react fast. Snake isn't the type of fighter who gives his opponent a second chance.
      and I think the throughline between Snake and Askeladd is exceptionally interesting, because it speaks to Askeladd's impartiality whenever he dealt with Thorfinn. Askeladd never really reacted to Thorfinn as though he felt threatened, or had any reason to fear. he had a similar efficiency to him... he wouldn't even entertain the notion of dueling Thorfinn unless Thorfinn proved it was worth his time. there's something different between men like Snake and Askeladd, and men who need the validation of intimidation tactics to reassure them of where they stand.

    • @Ash_Wen-li
      @Ash_Wen-li 5 днів тому +1

      @@bohdanpyzh2712 I actually think people are reading too much into the Fox and Snake thing. Yes, Snake's skill is on par with Askeladd but the reason Fox never triggered Thorfinn was because none of his attacks were attempts to kill him
      If course Snake wasn't trying to either but he could portray that killer instinct.

    • @bohdanpyzh2712
      @bohdanpyzh2712 5 днів тому +1

      @@Ash_Wen-li Yeah, I agree that it wasn't Snake's swordsmanship in that particular instance as much as his ability to convey intent through his body language. After all, intimidation is a very useful skill for a bodyguard - if you can scare off the bad guys without ever drawing your sword, you don't have to risk getting stabbed!

      Or they started watching season 2.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 6 днів тому +5

      @@pechiko-pechiko1755 this is also kind of how I feel about people who say that season 2 is a huge tone shift from season 1, but then they go so far as to say that it's a departure from what the show was doing in season 1, or it doesn't fit or something.
      like, the tone shift part is true, but so much of season 1 is so massively foundational for what happens in season 2. it's all so relevant... you can't have season 2 without first understanding season 1.
      and I think that's where people get tripped up. they think season 1 is about Thorfinn becoming some amazing badass, and earning an impressive reputation, just like Thors... but they seem to have missed the part where, even in episode 2, Thors' reputation was forcing him to leave his home, and his wife and kids, and go to war. he was being forced to do something he truly hated. all the kids in the village who were excited to go to war, specifically because they saw it as an opportunity to create a name for themselves, and gain glory? they did not know what they were talking about.
      we had to watch season 1, because we also needed to know. for every time that Thorfinn steps into a fight, and wipes the floor with someone, and there's all this hype surrounding the fight... that's us, reacting to the announcement of a war the way the villagers would. most reactors see that bit of the second episode as almost cartoonishly overblown, but then, inevitably, Thorfinn vs. Thorkell happens, and it's all so badass and cool then...
      but literally after that fight, as Thorfinn drags his battered body toward Wessex, he says that these men are crazy... what's so good about war and fighting? all Thorfinn is experiencing is emotional frustration, and physical pain. he's being forced to do something he truly hates. "glory" is not what this feels like.
      even now, season 2 is working its ass off, to bring us to a place of empathy for how Thorfinn actually feels. the badass we've watched him be, is in stark contrast with the sad, lonely, broken person that his life has turned him into. and Einar hates warriors... accepting Thorfinn is a hard sell for a good person. Thorfinn's past could've lost him one of the first real friends he's ever made on his own. this very valuable relationship almost died on arrival, and it's _because_ Einar is exactly what Thorfinn needs. Einar has all the things that Thorfinn has always lacked, and even then, the acclimation period is rough.
      season 2 has to start this way, because the audience needs to be confronted with themselves, and the perspective they've been aligned with in the narrative. we've been following Thorfinn, but neither he nor Askeladd have been right about how to live. it is only an incredibly competent work that can put the viewer in conflict with their own thoughts like this.

    this episode is one of my absolute favorites of the season, even now... though considering where we're heading... most episodes can easily attain that distinction. turns out, Vinland Saga is just really good.
    but yeah, I really want to highlight that scene where Pater is helping them after they get back from the fort. you've got Thorfinn, mr. "nothing good has ever happened to me," being helped, but with no acknowledgement that someone is trying to do a good thing for him now. and you've got Einar, trying to teach Thorfinn how to say please and thank you.
    once again, we're seeing that Thorfinn grew up surrounded by hatred, violence, and a necessary numbing of his emotions toward the kindness of normal civilians, like that woman who helped him when he was a child. Thorfinn consciously cut off this part of himself when he was very young. meanwhile, Einar is probably parroting things that his mom told him when he was a kid, because that's what he grew up with. "please" and "thank you" are such basic fundamentals, but Thorfinn became a specialized tool on the battlefield. the basics are what he's missing.
    and yet, through Thorfinn, we are perfectly set up to have sympathy for Einar... even as he considers strangling Thorfinn in his sleep. we watched all of Thorfinn's revenge quest, we know this type of anger, and it's extremely difficult to overcome, especially in proportion to how much you loved what you lost. we literally watched Thorfinn do this same thing when he held a sword over Askeladd, on that first night when he found him asleep. and in this way, we're seeing Thorfinn now, directly cast in the role of the person who raised him.
    but Einar also displays the difference in why he chooses to pull away. his problem with Thorfinn is his history... not just what he did, but all the things that are clearly absent from his experiences. things that aren't there, which should be. Thorfinn grew up without love, but that's not right. and the cure for whatever happened to Thorfinn isn't more pain and cruelty. he doesn't owe the world his death... he owes the world a better person.
    with the right care, maybe Thorfinn can become something that he's never been before. all it takes is someone who is willing to be decent, and treat him like a person. Thorfinn couldn't accept that in the past... back with that woman and her daughter, in the village he burned. but he can accept it now. and it's why I love the weight that is placed on him telling Einar "thank you" and "I'm sorry." Thorfinn has always reproduced the effects of the influences that surrounded him, and now he finally has someone truly good to imitate.
    and as my little sidebar about the ending for this video: Thorfinn's story is now fully applicable to all of the lyrics. not just the part about how his hopes are gone, and hearing voices in the night, but also the part at the end.

      Don't feel too bad, that's the exact intent of the story.
      Thorfinn never considered the people he was killing as actual people, just like we do with fictional people, because yeah, they're fictional. But if we're justified in enjoying fights to the death between fictional people, what about between real animals? Or between artificial intelligences? Or between two humans who have been deemed as "not people" by society? Like it used to be with slaves.
      This story teaches you to be careful with what you're enjoying, to always think before having fun. To always consider who you could be harming by treating them as "less important" than you 💞

    One of the best episodes. I loved it even more than most of season 1.
    The dream sequence when he cuts through his enemies in first-person is the same scene from season 1 episode 7 when Askeladd's crew were helping franks to reclaim the castle. This was rather funny episode. Thorfinn was ordered to bring enemy general's head to Askeladd. The only thing he cared about when he killed the general was his head falling into the sea in the semi-comedic scene like "oh sh#t, the head". Now adult Thorfinn sees it from completely different perspective. Haunting and horrific.
    The face of an old lady that he sees in this dream instead of the enemy general is the character from episode 6. She took care of Thorfinn, but was then killed by Askeladd's crew. Weird thing is that we never actually see her being killed from Thorfinn's POV. She just gets ignored by the vikings and disappears in the crowd. What probably happened there is Thorfinn actually saw her being murdered (maybe even beheaded in the same way that we saw in this episode), but it was such traumatizing event that his brain just buried it somewhere deep in his memory. Back then Thorfinn pretended to ignore it and moved on with "idgaf, I have more important thing to care about" attitude. Now it came back to him in the worst way possible, as if he killed her with his own hands.

And I love Einar's empathy despite Thorfinn did similar things to those who ruined Einar's former life. And yet he empathises with Thorfinn. This anime is very well written

    We should not forget that season 1 was only the prologue to the true story, starting with season 2. You could argue that the true protagonist in season 1 is Askeladd and to some extent Canute, while we "only" follow Thorfinn to watch the progress of these two characters (we see the story unfold trough his eyes, without him being the true protagonist, kind of). Askeladd and Canute are really driving the plot, making big decisions and showing big character development, while Thorfinn is singlemindedly going for his revenge which he never gets. His character development is rather slow or in some sense even negative, because he is falling deeper and deeper into an abyss of darkness. That 's why I think, if you still try to view him as the protagonist of the first season you might get the feeling that something is missing. I myself loved season 1 and I appriciated it even more after starting to read the manga. Not becauce I think it is better (actually enjoyed all of the coming arcs a lot more, than the prologue), but because these arcs are only as impactful and great because of this first season and all the generall information we got about the main characters. Meaning: without watching season 1 you might not like season 2 as much as you do, but you probably will enjoy the coming seasons more than the first one.... hope that makes sense ^^'

      this is a perfectly accurate explanation of how season 1 works. a lot of season 1 is also about how the characters tend to screw themselves out of all the things they really want, just by being too jaded and cynical to try and pursue those things in earnest. so like, even as it gives us the story of Askeladd achieving his goal where Wales is concerned, it feels like a lot of characters die, or end their arcs for the season, without having put together the pieces on a lot of events, and the crucial lessons they display. it's like season 1 is about failure.

      @@IDKLOL-qj7sl exactly. And it plays so much with expectations. I mean, I already feared in the middle of the season that Askeledd might die, but I never could have guessed that it would end like this. I think most wathcers where freaking out, when he suddenly killed the king. And the disbelief of the watchers was reflected in Thorfinns eyes, when he asked: "Will you really die?"
      But the scene that gives me the most chills in this last episode will forever be the moment he let gi of the dagger. The weapon his father owned, the symbol of his rage and hatred and his will to fight and kill. When he finally let go of this blade... goosebumps XD

    • @IDKLOL-qj7sl
      @IDKLOL-qj7sl 6 днів тому +1

      @@marienpanta9164 yes, the dagger scene is amazing... I'd say Thorfinn had the most worthy failure of all, in the end. it wasn't worth succeeding at that, and it frees him up to do other things. that dagger is the encapsulation of it all, and when he lets it go, it's allowed to truly end. plus it parallels Thors dropping his blade in the first scene of the show. a life of violence as a warrior, willingly let go, because there's a better life waiting for them to choose it.

    If Thorfinn beat Askeladd in a duel I think he would be in a similar state. Thorfinn's life revolved around Askeladd in one way or another and with him gone he has nothing left. It is possible that Thorfinn was subconsciously trying to not beat Askeladd in any of their duels as their relationship was very complicated.
    A 'What If' scenario where Thorfinn won a duel but didn't kill Askeladd could be interesting to think about.

    This episode is so good. Based on your reaction to this it confirms everything I thought about why you would like Vinland Saga. Season 1 is great, but season 2 is where it becomes a masterpiece.
    It also completely convinces me that we need to watch March Comes in Like a Lion after Vinland Saga ends. As much as I love it, I would never suggest it if I didn't have complete confidence that Luke would love it too. It's the kind of show that ideally needs to be watched without distractions where you can totally focus on it. So, while a twitch reaction would be fine, I think it would be a much better viewing experience for Luke to watch it on UA-cam where he can just let himself get sucked into it.

    season 1 lacked Thorfinn's character development - all other characters moved into some kind of direction while Thorfinn felt stagnant, being stuck on his missunderstood path of a warrior's revenge (in contrast to what Thors wanted for him). It felt frustrating not only for the viewer but also for Askeladd (and his crew- they always laughed at him for being still stuck with that idea to the point some of them even forgott why he was with them) and he expressed his frustation with Thorfinn of not being able to let go of that throughout the whole season and even made it a point as his last words for him to let himself be free. Thorfinn never really felt like the main character in S1 (we know he was supposed to be abut it did not really feeel like it) but rather Askeladd was the main character with all his scheming- Thorfinn was just pulled along. That is why S1 does feel like it is sth. lacking even though this is actually the point of the author - making this the prelude and premise for S2, preparing an incredible journey for Thorfinn.

While another person who hasn't been to war, Einar, who's never stained their hands with blood. Both lost alot along the way. Thorfinn is both. He's a victim but also participated in war. Which makes for a compelling clash between both Einar and Thorfinn .

I think Einar could sense Thorfinn had his own demons and lived with regret . so much so Thorfinn is tormented by it in his sleep. Einar feels bad for what he did, because how can you hate a man who's in so much pain , who's remorseful? Einar even gets mad at Thorfinn for not valuing his life more . Einar still has hope and hasn't broken down completely yet . He still has determination. Having someone like Einar around Thorfinn in his current state, is really important . Sorry for the rambling .
