Remember when Askeladd said: "Everybody is a slave to something"? Askeladd is a slave to his love for his mother and his love for his country. It's the reason he became a Viking and the thing that ultimately drives every decision he makes. Everything he did was to gain power and influence so he could protect Wales. This is why he selected Canute as his leader. So by declaring War on Wales, it means that Askeladd has completely failed at what he was working towards his entire life. It means all the pillaging and war which he hated so much, was all for nothing. Which is why he was so flabbergasted when King Sweyn declared war.
This IS the biggest cliffhanger for Askeladd. 1. His mother was of the Welsh royalty, a descendant of the legendary hero Arthur. 2. He loved his Welsh mother and despised his Danish father who had enslaved her. 3. After killing his father, he visited Wales with his sick mother, where she died and was buried. 4. He became a Viking, the very thing he hated, to operate as an agent helping Wales from within Danish society. 5. He was trying to secure a non-aggression treaty for Wales through Prince Canute of Denmark. 6. Both Wales and Prince Canute are now in a difficult situation due to King Sweyn.
knowing your memory, luke you needed to remember a lot of what went down in episode 23 when moving on to episode 24 So the immersion's not broken. You go a week without the series and suddenly your brain's left the mood/atmosphere the previous episode builds up and it needs to be built up again. Cliffhangers aren't the only reason in the world for watching 2 episodes at once, there're like 5 more i can name off the top of my head

Luke didn't understand the excitement of ending of this episode at all x) This is literally the highest point of tension in the season. On the one hand, Thorfinn finally began to listen to someone other than his thirst for revenge. On the other hand, Askeladd found himself completely cornered and overwhelmed, deciding to go all in against King Sven. This means that the next episode anticipates terrible catharsis of entire story of the first season
Thorfinn absolutely kills me in this episode. the way I think things went is, after the duel, the rest of them left Thorfinn out there to cope however he needed to... but they had the imperial council meeting to prepare for, and if Thorfinn wasn't gonna come back with them, they weren't gonna wait around. and it's not so unusual for them to leave Thorfinn alone after losing one of these duels. the main difference here, is that it really feels like Askeladd is leaving him behind this time. he's got a new dedication to Canute's cause, and by comparison, Thorfinn's zero progress feels stale and uninteresting. I've always said that the reason for Thorfinn's dedication for Askeladd is one part rage/hatred, and one part guilt over having watched his father die without being capable of doing anything. this means that, when Thorfinn follows Askeladd, he's partially seeking the catharsis of finally doing enough damage to Askeladd to match the pain he feels... and he's partially seeking validation. he wants to erase the weakness he felt when Thors died. he wants to erase the helplessness of the child he used to be. Thorfinn hates himself, and has been trying to erase as much of who he used to be as he possibly can. it's why Leif could hardly recognize him... he's changed himself so drastically. and as weird as it is to consider... Askeladd's validation of his progress means everything to Thorfinn. Askeladd is the standard of domineering power that Thorfinn has always measured himself against. and all this time, as Thorfinn has hurt people, and destroyed things, and become so alienated from everyone around him, he's been telling himself that the ends will justify the means. it'll all be worth something if he can achieve his goal. but at the end of the day, he's still a child. and Askeladd was the one person who understood him... probably better than Thorfinn could even imagine, given the similarities in their personal histories. and it just makes all of this even worse. to be rejected by Askeladd is just... the lowest pit of abject failure for Thorfinn. I mean... Thorfinn has done everything that Askeladd ever asked, and has only received beatings in return. he's turned out so much like Askeladd, absorbing his every lesson. Thorfinn hates him... this is probably still true. what did Askeladd turn him into? and now he's just gonna leave him? it's intensely painful to see what little Askeladd has left him with. this is Thorfinn at the end of his rope. he's expended absolutely everything he has, striving at the expense of anything else he could be. it's awful, seeing him all hollowed out like this. also, yeah, Wales is the homeland of Askeladd's mother, and that's where his allegiances truly lie. Sweyn had no idea... he just independently decided that he wanted to squash Wales before they could become an issue. also, Askeladd's question at the end... "why is luck never on my side in the 11th hour?" the answer to this is obvious... it's a pattern with him. he killed Thors instead of accepting him as the Artorius he'd been waiting for. he betrayed Ragnar just in time to realize that he was only hopping out of the frying pan and into the fire. he couldn't admit that Bjorn meant anything to him until he was dying. Askeladd only commits to the things he truly desires when it's just a little too late. it's always like this with him. he's just smart enough to keep suckering himself out of everything that would've actually made him happy in life.
If you know Askeladd's heritage then you can't be confused he makes that face. That was the whole plan Askeladd talked with Aser (warrior of one of Welsh kingdoms). Askeladd joins Canute to spare Wales from any invasion.
As someone that has already finished watching all of Vinland Saga, I wasn't quite sure why people why people insisted on episode 23 & 24 together. But I do know that next episode is pretty crazy.
Askeladd: plans this whole stuff with Canute and new hero Artorius to protect his motherland Wales. King: announced a war against Wales. Luke: why did Askeladd is making this skared face? I wonder, why..?
It's not that Thorfin doesn't care, it's that he has been living in survival mode for 10 years unable to recover from the trauma of losing his father. I think Leif understands, at least some of it 😔

also, my point about watching 23/24 back to back had initially been about the cohesion of finishing season 1, having a break, and then starting season 2. and the fact that 24 episodes divides cleanly into sets of 2. and, if the schedule got fixed, it'd be less awkward going into whatever show comes after Vinland Saga as well. really, it's all Heavenly Delusions' fault for having 13 episodes... now things are just gonna be thrown off forever, which does kind of suck in general. idk, maybe you could take a day off at the end of this show, and start the next one on a saturday, so things would be divvied up cleanly again? that at least feels like a better option than demanding that anyone overwork themselves. but, more importantly, I also decided to stop mentioning this, since it seemed like maybe it was getting genuinely annoying as a topic. I'm only saying something now because today's video is a done deal. secondary to all of this though: I think most people are just that impatient to see you react to the last episode of the season! even without a cliffhanger, I think it's fair to say that the entire imperial council situation flows better as a back-to-back viewing experience.

Schedules aside, can we talk about how amazing that ''home'' parallelism was for Thorfinn and Askeladd? While Askeladd found out that his home was about to be destroyed (Wales) and was using all his brainpower to try to find a way to save it, showing his love for his home-country and his mother, Thorfinn is also reminded of the idea of ''home'' when Leif mentions Helga, Ylva and Vinland. Saving one's already-established home (Wales) versus finding a new home (Vinland). It's like, while Askeladd's story is about to end, Thorfinn's story is just about to begin. And for both of them, while both of their life stories were full of hatred and a quest for revenge, the thing that's most important to them does seem to be the notion of family and home, be it Askeladd's love for his mother or Thorfinn's love for his father.
The reason people suggests the 2 last episodes to be seen together isn't because of a cliffhanger. It's because of the buildup and the conflict/resolution that are very cohesive. The final two episodes are basically 1 long episode because of the subject matter and pace.
Wit studios is such a goat for creating such a masterpiece of a season for Vinland saga Fun fact they are also responsible for making ATTACK ON TITAN 3 seasons Wit studio also made Vivy: flourite eyes song that is written by Re:Zero writer and has a complete story in just 12 episodes (I really hope Luke watches this someday like how he gave chance to another underrated anime like heavenly delusion) Upcoming anime by wit studios u should be excited for is the one piece remake and suicide Squad also written by Re:Zero writer nagatsuki teppei(yup that sexy beast)

Its true that a lot of the viewers are really impatient and how they're crying about you not releasing two episodes together is kind of unjustified. But its also kind of dissappointing to watch you not getting the weight of this episode and the ending and also how you were confused about Askelad's concern about Wales and the tension of how to act while keeping both of Wales and Canute's wellbeing in mind. Maybe you got a different expectation from the hyping and completely missed the point while trying to look for something else

Yeah, I wouldn't listen to people telling you to watch stuff back to back. There are definitely episodes of series that need to be watched back to back, but usually, those are special events that are released together. I honestly think people just thought that what happens in next the episode happened at the end of this one. Next time it might be better to ask your Twitch mods if they think you should watch certain episodes as a pair.

With this current trend we'll have Empty Man all the way to Oath done in one week, and no enemies, Canute convo and handshake scene all in another weekend (it got rearranged for the anime) with EP 24 acting like it's own separate epilogue I highly recommend watching 23 from the anime because there's some slight changes and additions that I feel really enhance the source material for the most part.
You need to stop watching THIS many anime at the same time Luke. Nicholas light did the same thing at first and later regretted it. You can't follow and remember all the details of that many shows. As someone that has already finished watching all of Vinland Saga, I wasn't quite sure why people why people insisted on episode 23 & 24 together.
But I do know that next episode is pretty crazy.
Askeladd: plans this whole stuff with Canute and new hero Artorius to protect his motherland Wales.
King: announced a war against Wales.
Luke: why did Askeladd is making this skared face?

also, my point about watching 23/24 back to back had initially been about the cohesion of finishing season 1, having a break, and then starting season 2. and the fact that 24 episodes divides cleanly into sets of 2. and, if the schedule got fixed, it'd be less awkward going into whatever show comes after Vinland Saga as well. really, it's all Heavenly Delusions' fault for having 13 episodes... now things are just gonna be thrown off forever, which does kind of suck in general. idk, maybe you could take a day off at the end of this show, and start the next one on a saturday, so things would be divvied up cleanly again? that at least feels like a better option than demanding that anyone overwork themselves.
but, more importantly, I also decided to stop mentioning this, since it seemed like maybe it was getting genuinely annoying as a topic. I'm only saying something now because today's video is a done deal.
secondary to all of this though: I think most people are just that impatient to see you react to the last episode of the season! even without a cliffhanger, I think it's fair to say that the entire imperial council situation flows better as a back-to-back viewing experience.

Schedules aside, can we talk about how amazing that ''home'' parallelism was for Thorfinn and Askeladd? While Askeladd found out that his home was about to be destroyed (Wales) and was using all his brainpower to try to find a way to save it, showing his love for his home-country and his mother, Thorfinn is also reminded of the idea of ''home'' when Leif mentions Helga, Ylva and Vinland.
Saving one's already-established home (Wales) versus finding a new home (Vinland). It's like, while Askeladd's story is about to end, Thorfinn's story is just about to begin. And for both of them, while both of their life stories were full of hatred and a quest for revenge, the thing that's most important to them does seem to be the notion of family and home, be it Askeladd's love for his mother or Thorfinn's love for his father.
The reason people suggests the 2 last episodes to be seen together isn't because of a cliffhanger.
It's because of the buildup and the conflict/resolution that are very cohesive. The final two episodes are basically 1 long episode because of the subject matter and pace.

the scene where askeladd's brain working in overdrive to find a good way to save his home country is defenitely one of my favorite moments in vinland
Its true that a lot of the viewers are really impatient and how they're crying about you not releasing two episodes together is kind of unjustified. But its also kind of dissappointing to watch you not getting the weight of this episode and the ending and also how you were confused about Askelad's concern about Wales and the tension of how to act while keeping both of Wales and Canute's wellbeing in mind. Maybe you got a different expectation from the hyping and completely missed the point while trying to look for something else

I highly recommend watching 23 from the anime because there's some slight changes and additions that I feel really enhance the source material for the most part.

You need to stop watching THIS many anime at the same time Luke. Nicholas light did the same thing at first and later regretted it. You can't follow and remember all the details of that many shows. Also you just enjoy less since your brain is busy following multiple story lines and details of multiple anime. If you wanna enjoy these anime to fullest, please slow down. Anime fans are sensitive, they love those reactors who remembers the details and don't like those reactors who forget the details. In their eyes, the reactors is passionate and genuine when he pays attention. If reactor forgets stuff then it means he/she is not into it that much. That's why those idiot code geass fans got angry, if only you remembered the important details they wouldn't have lashed out on you that way. What they did was wrong but your reaction was painfull to watch and then you bashed their "fav" show/character on misunderstanding. And then you double down on it by saying "don't bother explaining" which is rude to people who actually takes their time from their days to write those essays just so you can have the best experience. Again all of this can be solved by simply not watching THIS many shows at the same time.
