When you were handling the iPod Touch shells, it was like one of those "they're all dead!" moments from a movie or a TV show. The gradual reveal caused by the initial hints like the hollow metallic clinking and then the "horrifying" realization that these are just empty shells.
Very detailed recommendation! I like that you specify everything. One thing though, the thing that I like the most about the mini is it’s easier to get into (the only delicate part being the click wheel ribbon cable) but other than that, you can flash mod it and also replace the LCD color exactly like iPod Classic ones! The only drawback (and I’m not even sure if it’s a drawback) is it’s a monochrome screen. I have a 2nd Generation iPod Mini and I must say, it’s doing me wonders when I do night walks.
If you can find a 1st gen iPod Touch with a good storage capacity and a brand new battery, I'd actually recommend it. It's the only iPod Touch (and by extension the only iOS device) with a Wolfson DAC. I personally don't see why this DAC is so sought after, but it is. If you're into jailbreaking too, the first gen iPod Touch would also double as a great old-school iOS gaming device. The latest iOS version it can run is 3.1.3. I bought myself a first gen iPod Touch with a new battery recently, and it has been great. Old iPhones make good iPods too.
