  • In this video I fix my E30's ABS system that has been non-functioning for the entire time I've owned it. Turns out it was something super simple.

    This was a real cool video and told a good story! Wish you actually showed us how you ohmed out the sensor and the results. Good work and beautiful car!

      it is worth it, but also a lot of work! fyi, the first ix in the States was an '88 model (and in that year only came with manual transmission I believe). I did the same on my Father-in-law's '88ix. At the time, I went to Europe frequently for work and ended up sourcing many parts on German eBay...but this channel shows how you can fix the xfer case yourself, so some of that radical sourcing might not be needed. I ended up selling it after fixing it up just because it was rusting out pretty bad underneath (body was ok), and I didn't want to deal with it. The biggest issue I had was the front strut assemblies were quite rusted and I couldn't find a decent set of used ones here in the States...but I could in Germany :)

    I have an '88 325IX that has been having intermittent ABS issues because the light comes on shortly after starting the car and moving it. I've noticed that when it's wet out, the light goes off after driving the car for a bit and then restarting it. I assume that there's a weak ground somewhere and the wet weather allows it to make a better connection.
    Did you get ~90ohms for all the wheel speed sensors?
    Thanks for sharing all this great content on the IX, it's really great to finally see someone document their work on UA-cam :) Keep it up!

      Thank you! I got 90-94ish ohms on each in the rear and about 86ish each in the front. As long as they aren’t open circuit (infinite resistance) or really high resistance the sensors themselves should be good. Have you pulled your 2 relays out at the pump and taken a look at the female pins on the pump itself? They could have corrosion on them. Also check the large plug next to the relays for corrosion as well. I had a similar issue on my last ix (1990) and it turned out to be a rusty tone ring on the left front axle that the abs sensor reads. A chunk of rust would break off every now and then causing intermittent abs activations and the light on the dash to come on. Other than that I’d check your grounds like you said and also any physical harness damage between the pump and the control unit under the dash.
      I used this website for wiring diagrams:

      Let me know if I can help you any further and if you get it working.
      Good luck and thanks for watching!

      I haven't really looked too much into it yet but I am planning to fix it before the summer. I'll start by looking at any physical damage on the harness and inspect the relays as you mentioned.
      I'll definitely keep you posted as I (hopefully) make progress!
      Thanks for sharing the link :)

    It looks like it’s been lowered? Can you do a basic overview of your iX? I have a 90 4 door I’m in the process of rebuilding, I’d like to see what you’ve done. Thanks for all the great videos!

      It has, I lowered it with hr lowering spring and Bilstein struts. I’ve been planning a overview video, I’ll put one together soon. Let me know if you need any info or guidance with yours.

    Hiya! Thank you for the video. Can you pls share how you diagnose the wheel sensors and which pins in the Control module Plug control the 3 valves in the Hydro Unit? Thank you!

    Nice video but I am trying to figure out how to stop the ABS sensor from engaging every time I brake. I cleaned off all 4 sensors and put them back in. This is a 1987 325e automatic and under the steering wheel there is the ABS module with a silver looking relay sitting on top of the it. Maybe that relay has gone bad? I am not really sure so watching and looking for a video that could shed light on how to fix the problem before buying any part. Thanks for any input.

      @85garage  Рік тому

      I would start by using a multi meter to check the resistance of all 4 wheel speed sensors before replacing the ABS control unit under the dash. Usually a bad sensor will show an open circuit or very high resistance. Let me know what you find.

    What winter tires dimension do you recommend for e30?

    • @85garage
      @85garage  Рік тому

      The ones I’m running in the video on the 14” basketweaves are 185/70R18 Nordman-4 (not sure if they make them anymore but they’re good). On my old ix I ran 14” bottlecaps with 185/70R14s on them. General Altimax brand tires-these are avail and super grippy winter tires.

      The stock BBS wheels on an e30 ix are 15" fyi.
