The Co2 water is a bit harsh, sharp, metallic. Not something I particular enjoy. Sparkle taste a bit crisper, more natural, softer and you can fizz up tea, fruit juices etc.. Thanks to your video, we choose the Sparkle and love it!
Thank you Erin, it was a wonderful review of this product. Very informative. I have had SodaStream soda makers for years and I was looking for alternatives. You answered every question I had, many that could not be found by looking at Sparkel's website. On the manufacturer's website it didn't even tell how the machine creates the CO2, it could be produced by mixing depleted uranium and heavy water, they don't say. You made it clear; it is just citric acid and baking soda mixing together, I feel much better about this product now that you have said how it produces the carbonation; and even a method of creating my own "carbonator" packs if they become unavailable in the future.
I just ordered one, hopefully it works out. One advantage is there was no where I could get a Sodastream in under 2 weeks because it has to ship ground due to the pressurized tanks. A Sparkel I can get the next day from Amazon. One weird thing is it uses 750 ml bottles instead of an even 1 liter. Also getting bottles for the Sparkel seems more of a hassle since no one has them in stock.
Hey there! I have followed your suggestions and I am happy with the machine. However, I am having an issue. After I drink the water or soda from the machine, my mouth and lips feel extremely dry as if I ate a high salt meal. Is that the baking soda somehow getting into the water? Has anyone experienced this and are there suggestions to reduce the salt like effects on the drink? Thanks.
I actually stumbled across this product while looking at some SodaStream products on Amazon. We have an older model, and living in a rural area, have had difficulty finding a place to exchange our tanks. It seems like the Sparkel may be a good answer for those of us who can’t exchange tanks easily.
And if you buy the materials in the sachets--citric acid and sodium bicarbonate--in bulk and use one half to one tablespoon of each you can make the soda water far cheaper than either the SodaStream or the packets from Sparkel. I find I get about as many bottles from one pound of each as from one SodaStream tank. I can buy sodium bicarbonate at the grocery store for less than a dollar for a one pound box and I can buy citric acid locally for about $2.25 a pound. So where SodaStream costs $15, I spend a little over $3 with Sparkel.
Thank you for this review. I was considering the sodastream but did not like the idea of buying Co2 containers all the time as it is pricey and wanted to get away from containers. I bought the Sparkel instead and my kids and I love it. It's so easy to use and the fact you can just use citric acid and baking soda is much better. Thank you for your hack video as well.
SO GREAT, as was your video on how to use bulk baking soda and citric acid instead of the sachets. I HIGHLY recommend these two videos. These are the only two I've watched, but I'm going to watch more of your videos, and I'm sure I'll recommend those as well. Why am I so sure? You have a more professional presence, but more important, you manage to provide more quality information in FAR less time than others who have videos on the same general subjects. TERRIFIC!
Thanks so much for your videos on the Sparkel! I've really enjoyed them. From the comparison clip to this full on review, definitely appreciate the insight! Hoping you might entertain a small suggestion of turning off the auto-focus feature on the camera, if that's an option, once you're set. With it turned on, the camera sometimes tries to re-focus, which can become distracting. Again, very much appreciate the videos and very professionally done! Great job with the Review. I stopped drinking carbonated beverages decades ago because of the "unhealthiness" of it all. This seems like a great product.
The main question on my mind is what is the sodium content once made? The Sparkel site doesn't adress the issue. I realize most of the baking soda is left behind in the separate chamber, but I would imagine some of it vaporizes into the beverage... could be a health concern for those on a low sodium diet. 🤷♂️
You mentioned the soda had a different mouth feel than the sodastream's. Sodium Bicarbonate is a water softener. That's why I'm a bit suspect of the sodium content of the beverage... it sounds 'softened.'
Received it last week. It looks nice (silver), works well, no problems...except that it doesn’t carbonate enough. Bubbles are SMALL. Set on 5 it comes out very bubbly but then settles quickly. No matter what we try it ends up like semi flat soda from a can. Unfortunately canned soda is much better. Not sure if we should return it.
I got one for Christmas and have the exact same issue. I also notice a pronounced citric taste no matter what level of bubbles I select. It isn't unpleasant, but it also means you never get the pure taste you would expect and it ISN'T SUBTLE.
Are you using very cold water? That helps keep the carbonation in. I noticed this when drinking my canned sparkling waters. The colder it is, the stronger the carbonation is.
@@m.c.filmmakers626 The citric acid taste is in your head. No citric acid goes into the bottle you are carbonating. The reaction happens in a separate compartment at the top of the machine and only CO2 pumps into the bottle from the bottom. It is impossible for citric acid to get into your water.
I have experienced the opposite. Because I can put ice in the Sparkel bottle while carbonating and the closer to 32F you can get water the better it carbonates, the Sparkel gives me much more carbonation than even the highest level I can get with SodaStream. Because you don't release the pressure in the Sparkel bottle until you are ready to drink it, it stays carbonated better than SodaStream, which has to have the pressure released to get the bottle off the machine.
Can anyone comment on the height of the Sparkle unit? Just unboxed my Soda Stream and it’s so tall it doesn’t fit under my upper cabinets, so I won’t be able to leave it on my counter. Kinda disappointing.
How does this compare noise wise to Soda Stream? In the video the Sparkel sounds on par with a pod coffee machine like a Keurig. I find something about the Soda Stream noise triggering, I’m hoping this is better?
I like my Sparkel most of the time - but about one in five times, something goes awry and the water/carbonator mix goes INTO the bottle. When this happens, you can even see the volume of water increasing as they blend. I have never been able to figure out why - but the two waters blend and the taste is terrible. I just pour it out and start over - and the next bottle is just fine but...I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and has any idea what is happening. And...since I'm pouring out about a fifth or sixth of the bottles, the price per use does increase slightly (though not enough for me to go back to buying and hauling bottled carbonated water & recycling the bottles).
@@ErinLawrenceTV You're right - they ARE separate, which is why it's really weird that every so often something internal goes wack and the liquid from the "chemical reaction" and not just the gas, penetrates the drink container. Most of the time it works as expected, but the other happens often enough that I was online looking for an explanation or solution and that's how I landed on your video.

I'm so in love with my new machine. I just got it last week and have been experimenting all week non stop. I have a few things and recipes that some might find helpful. First i'm a soda/ fizzy drink addict with a pretty well tuned pallet, though some folks taste buds my very so don't be mad if it doesn't work for you. FIZZY FRUIT!!! I add fruits [halved strawberries, grapes, raspberry so far]to most drinks to add a little essence and for a fizzy treat. The little powder flavor packs to enhance water like Cristal light [CL] or crush work very well. I use 2 packs for a full bottle. First I desolve the powder in a small amount of hot water, to make a syrup, then add it with 4 ice cubes to the canister add any fruit then top with cold water, hit 5 and start. CL Wild strawberry with caffeine and 3 strawberries cut in half make an awesome energy drink alternative. I have also done this with a&w root beer, Canada dry ginger ale, and the crush fruit flavor powder packs from the dollar tree. And it is very comparable to store bought, surprisingly! with only 20 calories for the entire canister!🤯..... if you like a good cocktail try adding vodka to pretty much any drink ahead of time. Even just in water with fruit and make a "white claw" type of drink....... the best is a margarita but bump up the sweeter a bit. I have wondered if some decarbed cannabis could be added in a stainless steel tea ball prior to carbonation and it would be infused, if anyone is successful please update us, I will as well as I learn more...stay tuned!
This is my big concern as I am contemplating switching over to Sparkel as I have moved and dont have a convenient place to swap out Sodastream canisters any longer. I prefer a very strongly carbonated water and worry that Sparkel is not going to cut it?
I've seen multiple poor reviews (amazon up to thur March 2020) on this product. Have they improved the products reliability (Leaks, motor failures, salty taste)?

3:20 the citric acid doesn't actually get into your sparkling water. the machine's design ensures that only the co2 gas gets into your sparkling water.
We have been researching these machines and have it down to this one and the Aarke Carbonator II, which is much more expensive and hard to find online or in stores. Are there any stores that sell the Sparkel machines? Secondly, you talk about filling the bottle before putting it on the machine and then talk about the water mixing with the carbonators in the back of the machine, leaving behind the CO2 gas from getting in the water. Does the water from the bottle go into the tank and then back into the bottle? This doesn't seem to make sense. I've watched the video a few times.
The water in the drinking bottle stays in the bottle. The water and carbonator mix combines in a separate tank in the back to produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas is the only thing that enters the main drinking bottle.
@@ErinLawrenceTV Thanks Erin. From this video and photos on your blog it doesn't look like you could use SodaStream bottles in the Sparkel machine. Have you tried this? The SodaStream bottles are a lot cheaper (3/19.99 at most stores vs 2/39.99 from Sparkel).

I played around with it and got the directions on a flavored soda syrup bottle used for Sodastream.
I am trying to find out the differences in the level of carbonation between the sparkel and other competitors like sodastream and even canned soda water.
I want to like this thing I really do but it's been a nightmare for me. Bought it for my mom for Christmas, it just literally stopped working and after wasting a ton of those overpriced packets testing it over and over different ways trying to get it to work.... ugghhh Yes it does work again now, yet no idea why or what I did differently. It just randomly started working again so I guess I'm okay with it for now. Packets are expensive though keep that in mind.
Let's revisit the environmental impact, because there is a definite winner here. When exchanging CO2 canisters, as long as you're not making a separate car trip for just the canister, you're not adding to the waste you create--for example, you can add it to your grocery trip. Regardless of if you purchase Sparkel's sachets, the citric acid and baking soda you buy will most likely come in plastic packaging--most of us wont go out of our way to find non-plastic packaging or visit a refillery. Also, think about the sachets that come with the system regardless of whether you choose to make your own mixture. Those plastic sachets are going to live longer than we are. Plus, most CO2 soda makers can function without electricity. I think Sparkel is a great alternative to a CO2 based system and is unique for that, but it's not an environmentally friendly choice the way it is currently designed. If you're looking for an alternative to the SodaStream, I've been looking into Drinkmate. It has the option to carbonate any drink, just like the Sparkel!
It appears the Company isn't ready for prime time. You haven't been able to get extra / replacement bottles for at least the past year...so kinda makes this brand a no go for me. Reading the reviews, this has been an issue for over a year. What are the odds that the warranty on the machine is meaningless if they can't even get replacement bottles to customers.
So.. They replaced recyclable cartridges for wasteful plastic packets. Plus it takes 3 minutes.. Uses power so it leaves a carbon footprint... The only benefit is that you can add stuff without making a mess. Thank you for your informative vid.
I bought this because of you. Thanks for the awesome content. Its amazing it doesn't need a tank.
Glad it helped you!

I want to like this thing I really do but it's been a nightmare for me. Bought it for my mom for Christmas, it just literally stopped working and after wasting a ton of those overpriced packets testing it over and over different ways trying to get it to work.... ugghhh
Yes it does work again now, yet no idea why or what I did differently. It just randomly started working again so I guess I'm okay with it for now. Packets are expensive though keep that in mind.
:(
Let's revisit the environmental impact, because there is a definite winner here.
Environmental impact is one of the main reasons I'm leaning towards a soda maker, so this factor is super important to me. Just thought I'd share!
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Good feedback, Mike. Thanks for posting it here.
extra bottles at $17 ea (in two-packs) are $$$$
Hi, Erin. Great videos. The carbonation packets for the Sparkel system are pronounced, sashay, not sachit.
So.. They replaced recyclable cartridges for wasteful plastic packets. Plus it takes 3 minutes.. Uses power so it leaves a carbon footprint... The only benefit is that you can add stuff without making a mess. Thank you for your informative vid.
Thanks for watching!
I would totally buy a Sparkel machine, but it is not very attractive. They need to upgrade the look.
Sparkle macine worked about 20 times. Check out all the beoken sparkle machine videos b4 u buy.
The machine is now $170 CAD 😢
Wow!
I like the video but carbonating red wine? Carbonating red wine!!! My French brain just 🤯
