I don't have any experience with the sparkel system, but I think perhaps some key points may be missed in your review. 1. So you have to go to the store to buy c02 for the sodastream... just like you have to go to the same store to buy the sparkel sachets or ingredients if you diy. What's the difference? 2. I thought most sodastreams give you infinite levels... the longer you hold the button down the more fizzy it will be. On the model you are showing it is not three levels, the lights work on a timer to give you an estimate of how fizzy it will be based on how long you hold down the pressure button. 3. Re. environmentally friendly. It is mentioned that you have to drive to the store to get a new tanks, but you have to also drive to the store for the sparkel sachets. From what i can see there is zero plastic waste from the sodastream because the cylinders are refilled and you swap a cylinder. 4. While you do mention DIY pressurised c02 tanks, and just discounted this, you should have explained the options because this is how you can really reduce the cost. And there are options where you are not using DIY methods to refill the sodastream cylinder. You can purchase larger tanks that can be connected to the sodastream with an adapter that can bring the cost from 60 cents per litre down to 10 cents per litre. It would only be fair that you mention this option. 5. What about cleaning the sparkel, is that mentioned? I searched and found something saying if you are using the sparkel to carbonate beverages other than water you need to do a deep clean on occasion. Also is there any other cleaning required?
I go to my local Walmart and bring back the soda stream canister after it is empty, and buy a store "refill" for $15. You go to the service counter and that's where they have them. Don't buy the regular soda stream refills because they are much more expensive, by the Walmart refills.

What a great comparison video! Thanks so much. Have just ordered a Spärkel system!! Went online to order a SodaStream. Am I ever glad I saw your video. I'm positive we'll enjoy the Spärkel much better. I'm going to watch your "How to make you own Spärkel water Carbonator" now! Thanks again, Erin!
The price for exchanging a gas canister is 19 CAD in Canada and 7 CAD for the syrup. That's a total cost of 19 CAD/60 liter and 7 CAD/9 liter. All in all you're paying 0.31 CAD/liter of club soda and 1.1 CAD/liter of Soda. There are many different kinds of syrup to choose from. Some are sugar reduced, and that will taste artificial to you if you're not used to it.(because it is) Unless you think all soda you're getting in fast food places tastes artificial(made the same way as sodastream), it's because you've picked a syrup brand/type you don't like.
Why does the water from it dry 'SOLID' ??? what is that doing to my insides ????!!! (just spill a little and don't dry it and come back in a few minutes its dry like freaking clay !!)

i have carbonated Martinellos apple juice to make sparkling apple cider with the sodastream. I use 5 bursts. so i don t know about now being possible with soda stream. As long as you do not overfill the bottle and take your time between bursts there is no cross contamination. That said i think commercial carbonation is much more potent and lasts longer. i do not know what else they put in the water.

I use a paintball canister for my sodastream. While its a bit expensive to buy that with the nozzle adapter, the refills are only 5 bucks at the local sporting goods store. It fills about 80 liters as well. It is well worth my money to use this method rather than exchanging co2 tanks for 15 bucks

If you choose sparkle you simply order 5 lb of citric acid off Amazon and 5 lb of baking soda off Amazon. Amazon delivers so it's really easy. So you will get about 210 tablespoons out of each one. So that's 210 bottles of sparkling water before you run out I think the last time I figured it out it was somewhere around $0.20 a bottle to make. If you buy the sparkletts pre-packaged packlets it'll cost you about $0.40 a month. I've never been a fan of the CO2 bottle exchange system.
In Sodastreams defence you can make your own flavour syrups, or any other way you wish to flavour. Can also refill your own tank easily with dry ice or use a much larger co2 tank and adapter, which cuts the cost to a fraction of the proprietary tanks. As you mentioned about Sparkle though you can make your own powder instead of buying which also cuts down on the cost significantly. Generally if you are comfortable using larger tanks, or refilling with dry ice Sodastream is going to be cheaper in the long run with a higher up front cost(Locally I can refill a sodastream tank for about 2 dollars), while Sparkle will be a bit more expensive in the long run with a lower upfront cost. If you and your drink alot of carbonated beverages Sodastream is probably the way to go. If you aren't comfortable either refilling your bottles or using a larger non proprietary co2 bottle then Sparkle is probably the better option.
Right. and saying the tanks are "recycled" is misleading. They are refilled, so they are "reused" not "recycled." there is no waste at all. Even if you aren't refilling them yourself, the ones you return are refilled and sent back into the supply chain. They don't go to the recycler. And you can flavor with anything--including the things she mentioned. I actually use the packets of water flavoring like Crystal Light. You can get all kinds of flavors in these packets, including Crush soda flavors, 7Up, Hires and A&W root beer, and every fruit and tea flavor imaginable.2 packets to a bottle. Price wise. she is also mistaken. The lowest priced Sodastream is $99 (lower at Walmart) so is cheaper than Sparkel, and requires no electricity (which is not free) to run. The Sparkel is $129. And "contaminating" isn't why the recommend not carbonating things other than water. It's because some things when carbonating spray all over when you release the pressure removing the bottle. That will happen with Sparkel too. She is just wrong about Sodastream. The tanks do not contain 60 liters of CO2. 60 liters of CO2 would be a HUGE tank. The 60 refers to the number of liters of soda they make on average. The tanks hold about 14oz.--less than a half liter--of CO2. As far as noise, there is only a tiny difference in volume, and the Sodastream makes noise for 3-5 seconds. The Sparkel runs much longer. Sodastream wins hands down on noise. The whole video is incredibly biased. Also, making your own packets voids the Sparkel warranty. Refilling Sodastream tanks does not.

@@pjaypender1009 Cool idea on the Dry Ice. However thst sounds like a hassle opposed to just measuring 10g and 13g. Sparkle all the way until Soda Stream gets the cost down and makes valves that allow you to mix anything like the Drink Mate. It is also very easy to clean the Sparkle. Not sure about the longevity of either machine. Also not sure how the company can say you bought your own ingredients.
I think if the citric acid portion and the sodium bicarbonate are different portions..... mixing them together would not be the same measurement. I’m going to put them in air right containers separate with their own scoop for ease.

I ended up with soda stream, the jet model, $80, also ended up getting a 20pound co2 bottle and refill my soda stream myself, upfront cost about $300, but will cut costs by 10x in the long run, love it! also use mio water enhancer not the syrups, that also saves $$$
When I bought the sparkle instead of the Soda stream which my friend has my husband was skeptical he said I think you will be disappointed - well I’m not and guess what - all I hear is can we have some bubbly water 💦 lol great video even tho I purchased before I saw it :) going to try dyi carbonator - let ya know how I like it - thanks Erin
I just got the sodastream and may take it back after seeing this video. This is the electric soda stream that gives you three options for levels of carbonation. You can just buy the cheaper model and press the button more times to get higher cabonation. This stupid thing is about a half inch too high to fit on the counter under the cabinets. I've read other people have had the same problem. the sparkel sits lower.
You don't drive to the store just to replace your Sodastream gas canister. You do it in combination with other things. The exchange of canisters is a non-issue for the user environmental-wise. Whether canisters is a worse way to store it is a better question. It has to be driven from the factories and to the stores. This can either be a bad point for Sodastream if empty bottles are collected and delivered every time... or a good one if they've found a way to refill the bottles locally in the store.
SodaStream is cheaper as it would only cost 5 cents to make a liter of Selter water. The 60 liter CO2 bottle hold 14.4 oz of CO2. I can get 1 lbs of dry ice for $3, unscrew the valve of the CO2 bottle and put the dry ice in there. Screw the valve back and wait for the dry ice to melt and now I have 1 lbs of CO2 in the bottle for $3. That comes out to be 5 cents per liter of carbonate water.
It's really not hard to DIY refill a Sodastream CO2, you can just use dry ice, but I would watch a little tutorial before hand on how to do so, all in all it's peanuts, and dry ice is cheap AF.
I don't know why I feel like the gas cartridge might be safer for your body, versus consuming however much it is of citric acid and baking soda. Especially if someone is drinking a lot of carbonated water, soda, drinks, etc. I don't know why that seems like a better concept. I guess, because the gas "bubbles" will release in your body as burps, whereas having something physically added to the water, just makes me wonder if it's going to be okay for the long run. Does that make sense? I haven't researched consuming citric acid and baking soda on a regular basis to see what people say. I'm sure I'm probably thinking into this too much, but it's just something that comes to mind, since one is a gas and one is not. I really like the idea of the sparkle, because I like being able to add carbonation to anything. Any thoughts about that I've said? Thanks! 💗
@@ErinLawrenceTV If they don't enter the water, how does the water end up carbonated? It has to enter the water for it to work. That's why you have that different flavor afterwards.
@@goose7574 there is a acid-base chemical reaction between the two, and the product is pure CO2.... No citric acid or baking soda ever mix with the water, only the product of their chemical reaction (the CO2).
Thanks for your comparison Erin; I bought one, as well as a Drinkmate, and I think I'm going to be returning the Sparkel however due to a number of observances and issues, which is disappointing because I was hoping to support a Canadian company. The way Sparkel Carbonates, it cycles its gas distribution from the bottom cap, through the bottle, and back up through the top cap. This has the unfortunate effect of blowing some liquid through the entire system, which effectively contaminates the next beverage you do; you can see this very clearly by looking into the waste trap. If it's only water you're doing, then it's clear. But do a cola, and you'll see a caramel like tinge in the water. Not to mention that after a cycle, it will drop from the nozzle at the top. This is with making sure that the bottles are filled to the fill line (and in at least one case, below it..). One of the reasons we started looking at these was because my daughter developed severe food allergies and we hoped this would allow her to enjoy some of the things she can't buy at retail. The Drinkmate on the other hand, as mentioned by another commenter below, has their infusion caps and that can be washed out between drinks, or I'll probably look to buy a couple more (although the Canadian site doesn't seem to carry them for some reason....). Anyway, that does seem to be the worse issue, but apart from that, I do find that even on the highest setting, it doesn't carbonate as much as we like, an the bottles don't seem to be keeping the pressure. I really wanted to like it as it was my first choice when shopping for one, but unfortunately doesn't meet our needs.
Sodastream is the cheaper alternative. They do sell a third party connector hose that you can hook up to a larger refillable CO2 tank which drops the price a lot.
there is a container that you empty out of the reaction water every 5-6 bottles or so. Its about the same capicity as the water hopper in the back so you usually refill and empty the sodamaker at the same time.
To be fair just like you can make your own sachets and save money with the Sparkel you can refill your own tanks or just get a big one for the soda stream. And for me its a HUGE plus that I don't have to connect it to an outlet. And Costco had the soda stream on sale for $80 USD with two bottles and tanks.
I just bought SodaStream on Amazon....for 69 bucks and understand that I will have to once and while purchase the canisters....but when you mentioned the price of the little packets for Sparkle...uh no. If I'm going to pay 65 cents per drink...I might as well stick w/ SodaStream and/or buy sparkling water from the dang store. Nope....but nice review over all.
Old message, but I thought I'd reply. Most sodastream flavors will be made with sugar. Some do use sucralose as an enhanced artificial sweetener. However, the "zero" drinks, will almost always contain aspartame. In most drinks across most brands, including sodastream syrups. But that is specifically talking about the zero drinks. Genuinely a good idea to always check the ingredients list if unsure though, as every syrup is made a bit differently.
Another thing about the soda stream flavorings. They are getting harder to find in stores. Dont get me wrong I love my sodastream but latley its been harder and harder to find the flavor bottles. Espacally the Diet ones. Now I want to try this machine now to haha. Ty for the info.
I have been using Crystal Light and other water enhancer flavorings with my Sodastream for literally years. You can flavor with anything, you aren't limited to Sodastream flavors. There are water enhancer packets made by Crush soda in Crush flavors, and both A&W and Hires root beer. Every tea and fruit flavor imaginable. The possibilities are endless.
I safely refill my soda stream bottles which are 1lb of CO2 from my own 20lb CO2 tank. It costs me $33 usd to refill the 20lb tank which works out to just under $0.03/lt.
Hmm wonder what gonna happen to all those co2 cylinders that will end up in the dump. Sodastream is a ripoff but have someone local who can refill for a fraction
I was going to jump on the soda stream bandwagon but after seeing the simplicity of Sparkel and the low cost of the carbonator sachets I’m investing in a Sparkel soon.
I just got my new Sodastream for $49USD so far I love it, and I am happy about not having to buy so many 2 liter bottles, but the sparkle looks amazing, sadly I've never seen it in any store here :(

@@pjaypender1009 You don't have to worry about the the soda going all over your counter when you put the syrup in with the sparkle.... You get 100% co2 with every bottle with sparkle, as opposed to the sodastream when the tank gets low... And one last thing ---- you don't have to shake the soda to mix the syrup, which makes the soda go flat.
Where can I buy your machine from sparkle I live in the UK
Thanks for the information, but what about the pH of the water?, there is any change? Do you know?
Thanks

1:06 what was the point of this section if you have no idea?
Hi, are there less busy stores to exchange the tanks? In my country, all who sells the machines, exchanges tanks as well. We actually have a set price, so not a headache there, eq to $11 pr exchange tank. If the machine is making a mess its because one don’t let the water set before the next shot, or press it too long (on manual ones at least). But of course we can add our own flavouring, please, investigate, and use some imagination.. but only after the water is carbonated. I at least, love my ‘new’ Pink Blush manual Sodastream. Plan to brew some very strong green tea, perhaps with lemon, to grace my carbonated water, and will be on the lookout for some very concentrated natural fruit juices.
I ended up with soda stream, the jet model, $80, also ended up getting a 20pound co2 bottle and refill my soda stream myself, upfront cost about $300, but will cut costs by 10x in the long run, love it! also use mio water enhancer not the syrups, that also saves $$$
How do you like your soda stream so far??
@@KillerofGods I have had mine for over 10 years and it's amazing!
I'll stick with my drink mate just purchase 10 lbs CO2 tank, CO2 lasts me for 8 Mos. Cos me 40.00
Does the SodaStream flavors have PFAS in them. Because if so I’m going with the sparkle.
do you have a recipe for 7-up?
No, but let me know if you find one!
I just got a Soda Stream, Trying to find a Nitrous bottle that fit, would be great for parties 😛
with my soda stream i got a 5lb co2 tank last so much longer refill one a year
Great!
Thank you for the compliment
Do you like the diy carbonator? Does it impact the flavor or bubbliness of the water?
This was a great video! Thank you for putting in so much information in an easily digestible manner!
I've never even heard of the sparkle is it something that's started in Canada first I'm in the US
I think it is actually a Canadian company!
C02 bottles vs citric acid/baking soda. Which is healthier for you to drink ? AND Have there been any issues with the updated version of sparkel?
In both cases you're drinking C02.....
Very clear and concise. Great information as I'm new to beverage makers. Just one comment, the word sachet is pronounced (sashay).
Thank you! Even in Canada?
@@ErinLawrenceTV I live in Canada and always pronounced it (sashay)
@@chrismacdonald7955 I've always heard Sashet in Canada
Never heard sashay in Canada or the us, sashay sounds gay.
You should put the links you mentioned to follow up with in the more info /description section of the video
Thanks!
💗
The sachets/powders never enter your water; the CO2 gas they create is what creates the bubbles
@@ErinLawrenceTV
If they don't enter the water, how does the water end up carbonated?
It has to enter the water for it to work. That's why you have that different flavor afterwards.
@@goose7574 there is a acid-base chemical reaction between the two, and the product is pure CO2.... No citric acid or baking soda ever mix with the water, only the product of their chemical reaction (the CO2).
Goose it reacts in a separate chamber, the CO2 gets collected and this pressurizes the bottle
Thought i was watching a ctv news segment. Great voice!
Thanks!
What are 'urbs'?
Where did you buy the sparkel?
thank you i’m going with sparkel
Bummer!! We don't have Sparkle in Australia :( Soda King is Soda Stream's competitor
Public service Announcement: I emailed Sparkel and they said they plan on hopefully expanding to the rest of the world over the next 2 years.
Thanks!
Sodastream co2 $15 w exchange of empty
After citric acid and sodium bicarbonate mixed result residues? If are residues, you have to wash residues tank or something like that?
there is a container that you empty out of the reaction water every 5-6 bottles or so. Its about the same capicity as the water hopper in the back so you usually refill and empty the sodamaker at the same time.
U can get 5lb co2 cans and have a bottle cost 5cent ..
Thanks for watching
Which one taste better to the planet? Since we can't say which one is better for the planet, flavor could be the deciding factor.
😃😆
Hi Erin...do you know if Sodastream syrup is sweetened with aspertame, or sugar?
Green is definitely your color.... cuteness

Great comparison video as always Erin! Thanks for the info!
Thanks Shawn!
@@ErinLawrenceTV FYI the Sparkel is sold out on their website as well as Amazon....
Hmm wonder what gonna happen to all those co2 cylinders that will end up in the dump. Sodastream is a ripoff but have someone local who can refill for a fraction
We are supposed to recycle them! I sure hope everyone does! After all, you get your money back when you return them
@@ErinLawrenceTV You do NOT get any money for an empty cylinder. Its a ripoff
SodaStream do recycle their CO2 canisters and fill it again - this is a full recycling process. No waste at all.
@@ErinLawrenceTV Sodastream refill the cylinders. No waste. And if for some reason they can't refill due to damage then they are fully recyclable.
