    FIX in 30 seconds--Everything he said is 100% correct-- I had the exact same issues-- the EFI 20a fuse was black on one side but not blown-LX would not start , stranded me at Post office. all the New Fuse Boxes are sold out completely- just a few in junkyards-- After watchin the video the problem is one side of the EFi 20a fuse below what we can see deep into the box so i thought about trying this---Paper Clip unfolded as now straight wire pushed down in the burnt side--then pushing the 20a fuse back in place with paper clip wire protruding out--its a snug fit with the wire inserted but-------It works---starts up like a charm... No Tow Truck-----without the video id be lost so thank you Chowcares.....I have ordered a used box just to have but who knows i may never need it...paper Clip old school

    Thanks ChowCares, I just completed my junction box swap today in my 98 LX470.
    As you all know, part number 82720-60022 is discontinued for the 98 and 99 models. I used part number 82720-60023, and it worked beautifully in my 98 LX470.

    I had this problem, (2001 LX470) and after seeing your video I discovered I get get it to "click" and then start by wiggling the fuse. Be it was getting harder to do I figured it was just a matter of time before it was not going to work and leave me stranded. I thought about punching ahole in the side so that I could get the to the sleve thing. I decided after watching the video and understanding how the box is constructed, that I would try and break away the guard plastic around that fuse, then I pulled the sleve connector out the top. Did some work on the sleve, and reinstalled the sleves and fuse. It works now. $800 for a new fuse box to fix a little loose connecter is crazy.

    Thank you so very much! This pretty much solves the mystery of why my Wife's 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser will randomly not start. All the mechanics that have looked at it say they can't figure out what's going on (but they should did try replacing a bunch of different parts). In fact, I found this video because it didn't start again today - thankfully her brand new car is in transit and we can ditch this Charlie Foxtrot of a Land Cruiser in a couple weeks.

    Thank you so much for your video!!! I had the same issue with my 2000LC. I could not find a box here in Colombia so what i did was very carefully cut away the plastic around the fuse holder down to the base of the box using a small pointed wire cutter. I was then able to pull out the metal clips that hold the fuse and slide onto the bottom blades in the box. I carefully cleaned them up as they were full of melted plastic. I carefully reformed the clips around a fuse and tightened the clip that attaches to the fuse box blades. I then slid the clips back down on the blades and attached the fuse. Check Engine light came on and engine started right away. As soon as I can order a new box I will. As of now its running great! Thanks again!

    Dealing with same issue, and a frequently charred fuse. Thanks for this info. I am starting to doubt the reliability of this vehicle, despite its sterling reputation. Just dumped 3 grand into timing belt, water pump and radiator, another grand into front axle, and now this headache. Comparing my Chevy - same age and mileage, I haven't had to spend nearly the money to keep it roadworthy. Toyota needs to start remanufacturing these fuse boxes and offer them to their loyal customers for almost free. No-start out on a back road is definitely a "fatal flaw."

      I agree, they should do a recall on these, doubt it will happen tho. As far as reliability goes, they are great, it just requires a lot of maintenance and it’s not cheap

    I´m doing this on a 2002 Lx 470 at 87000 miles. That same fuseholder melted and crank but no start. . I´m in costa rica and have the fuse box and cover on order. The parts guy at the dealership says it will come with fuses but not relays. Should I spray the old relays with wd40 or silicon lube to make them easier to remove? For awhile I was able to jump that fuseholder base (there were two little prongs sticking out) with clips to a fuseholder with wire pigtail and fuse. Then that failed to work. This darn part, (fusebox) costs almost $1000 and takes a month to come from the US. If it´s such a problem why doesn´t the dealer here have them in stock? They even deny that it´s a problem (BS). Thanks for the video, very helpful.

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  3 роки тому

      My fuse box came with all fuses and some relays. The ones that don’t come with the new box, just reuse your old ones. I wouldn’t recommend spraying any type of line on the relays, it’s not necessary. Idk why Toyota doesn’t stock them anymore, I guess it’s such an expensive part for an old car they don’t bother.

    1. It's started to have intermittent issue of shutting off when at idle and failing to restart, also failing to restart if shut off until one two hours have passed.
    2. It has always started when cold and starting fluid has always made it start if failed to start regularly.
    3. Replaced ECM module, mass air sensor, fuel filter, 1 oxygen sensor, fuel pump in tank.
    4. I have no error codes showing on scanner, see no corrosion or issues with fuse boxes or modules. Runs strong, smooth idle, good mileage.
    ANY IDEAS OR ADVICE FROM THOSE WITH MORE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED! Thanks, Shane.

      There’s a “jumper relay” posted on ih8mud that u can try. It replaces the efi relay fuse. If that fixes your problem, it’s most likely your fuse box which it sounds like it is

      @@chowcares Even though I dont see any kind of corrosion or signs of heat damage on my fuse box? What throws me the most is if its electrical how can the use of starter fluid into the throttle body overcome it? I'm not doubting you as Im certain you're much more knowledge than I am on these thing just trying to understand the diagnosis. I've watched all your videos on the 100 series and I replaced the ECM module first thing when it started this and ill do the fuse box now if that's what it needs just dont see anything that looks at all damaged or badly aged on mine. I live in upstate SC and this has always been local vehicle and not used in mud (or red clay as we have round here).

      @@r.shanethompson7933 electrical issues are the most difficult to diagnose. Starter fluid shouldn’t affect the starting but it also could just be a coincidence. The jumper method is a a cheap way to test if the fuse box needs replacing

      @@chowcares thank you so much for the replies. Do you have a patreon sign up? I've had to use the starter fluid 6-7 times (min.) as the problem slowly became more frequent. I stopped driving it two weeks ago as the problem became unbearable. It never shut off at all when driving unless completely off the throttle or stopped at idle. It's now almost time able in that I can start it up in the driveway and let it idle and it'll shut off at 8-10 minutes 90% of the time. I'm going to get the parts to make the jumper here in a bit but let me ask you what is the "chassis fuel pump" and could that be where its coming from?

    Can this cause stalling issues at higher speeds? I'm having a similar rough start and have gone through all air and fuel components. When I go WOT at really any speed I stall out and then it goes back to normal the second I let off the gas.

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  3 роки тому

      Before replacing this, I never experienced stalling out, but in theory it could cause it to do that. An easy way to tell is take out the efi fuse and look at the prongs with a flash light, if there is any signs of burnt, discoloration, or deformation, it’s probably your problem

    As I asked in other related video, Why wouldn't the new fuse box do the same thing if it is not redisigned from the factory. I think the most financially efficient option for the future is the create a bypass like has been done before that totally negates this issue with the faulty fuse box. This costs like nothing to make. Like this.....

    • @GrayHairGaming
      @GrayHairGaming 3 роки тому +3

      @@chouathao6560 Yes! Apparently when the timing belt was done last (prior to my ownership) the wiring loom for the crank position sensor and oil sending unit were incorrectly routed. They didn't put it back behind one of the brackets and it led to the loom being rubbed on by the serpentine belt, rubbed through the loom, and into the wires. So it would make sense that it would short out -- killing the signal from the crank position sensor -- which stalled the car, which stopped the belt, which pulled it away from the wire, which would allow for restart... rinse and repeat. Had to pull it out, splice in replacement wire, and the most fun part... snaking it down the correct way without taking the front of the engine off to reconnect it correctly. Crossing my fingers it has been working since then.
