You are the man Car Wizard! Love your channel. Wanted to quickly chime in to say that I had my muffler blow out on my 03 LX 470 a few years back. Was short on cash and rather enjoyed the V8 rumble so I let it ride a few months before repairing. Well the hot exhaust blowing out where it wasn’t supposed to melted the wiring harness that controlled the AHC hydraulic suspension in the rear of the car. Cost me a lot more money and time trying to chase down why my suspension had defaulted into sport mode. Bottom line is, don’t let issues linger as they will create more problems. Thanks for all the great videos and insight wizard!
This is why Car Wizard will continue to be blessed with good fortune. He could have EASILY told this customer that the engine needed a full rebuild. But instead, rightfully said it needed a $100 muffler. Even did a thorough once-over of the entire vehicle and found a few more maintenance items. MUCH respect to him and skills!

@@fredbrackely Yeah i know someone with a 110, its a pretty solid car kept up with all the cruisers and patrols and stuff but the only let down was the motor. The owner swapped a 3.9l rover v8 and its an absolute weapon. I'd say the only let down with the defenders are motors (on some models) but even then its not like engines go all the time.
I live in Saudi Arabia and Land Cruisers are the only vehicles that can withstand the harsh conditions in the desert for long period of time. Basically anything has the Land Cruiser badge on it which also includes Land Cruiser Prado and the Land Cruiser 70 series (which we still get new in 2020)
On the valve covers! Just a tip since I've played a lot with these engines, the bolts are usually loose on the covers, a little snugging and the seaping stops 👍
I really liked this video, when I was a dealership technician I always wanted to wright a small book or pamphlet on does and don’ts for customers. That was long before computers and videos. You covered one of my main don’ts in your video. Great job, thanks.
Toyota's biggest weakness was North American winters. Plenty of box frame Tacos rusted out. The box frames were stronger than C frames (hence why trucks like the Hilux could take a beating), but salty water from the roads ate them out.
Love the Video on the Land Cruiser. Here in Australia they are just as good however the pick is Diesel here. I have the newer 200 series Landcruiser with over 345,000km and it’s only ever needed standard maintenance work. It’s indestructible. Best car I’ve ever had. Love the channel!
I know the video is two years old, but I'll make the comment anyway. I lived in Australia for a few years and my brother in law (who has lived there 45 years) said let's do a desert trip. We traveled 10,000 miles all through the center and the north. I absolutely loved it. He had a Discovery and we had problems in Alice Springs. Literally, every vehicle you see in the outback is a Landcruiser and parts are plentiful. You don't see Range Rover's or Discovery's. We needed parts. Discovery parts ? No way. Everything had to be flown in and it took days to get it fixed So, buy a Landcruiser NOT a Discovery
I was expecting the muffler. Had to replace mine on my 1999 Land Cruiser. Same problem and super common. But, no doubt, Land Cruiser's are amazingly well built.
Yeah I was confused, I was listening for a knock but the only thing I was thinking was; "Are they really that loud normally?" "Where is the knock?". I had a car once with an exhaust leak, it had a clamp rust out and snap off and it sounded just like this, although it was by the upper exhaust.

I had an 06 LX470 and put 180kmikes on it till I rolled it in 2017. Countless roadtrips. Countless off road camping trips. Absolutely loved that car. Amazing vehicles. I Never did anything single mechanical repair to that car asides from brakes and regular maintenance. They don't make em how they used to. If any of y'all are looking into buying one of these I HIGHLY recommend it. But please if you are just step up and get an LX470. Much nicer car inside and out and the hydraulic suspension makes it that much better.
Loved this one. I have a Lx470 with over 400,000km's on it now. Replaced quite a few things but also got it relatively cheap too so was expecting it. My muffler isn't as bad but I noticed it was starting to go as well. Thanks for the great content wizard!
I took my old car into an oil change shop for an oil change ages ago. I had topped off the coolant a week or so earlier, because it kept getting low and I knew something was wrong. They showed me some coolant that was in the engine compartment and without checking anything out said that I needed a water pump and quoted me a ridiculous price. I took it to a mechanic who I was told was very honest, he looked at it, called me and said that it was just a loose hose clamp he tightened it and didn't charge me a thing. I tried to give him something but he wouldn't take it.
That's when you become a permanent customer of this absolute diamond you've discovered! That's exactly what I did when I unearthed my mechanic. Stayed with him through multiple cars and only migrating westward ended my use of his expertise.
I had a Plymouth voyager that had an antifreeze leak. I took it to a new mechanic that had just opened on the corner of my street. He told me there’s a pipe that runs under the intake manifold to the water pump that probably rusted out. Said it would be about $250 fix. When I went to pick it up he told me it’s $50, was a preformed hose that attaches to that tube nothing more. I’ve been going to him ever since and I recommend his shop when I’m asked about a mechanic.
Ah, no they don't. I'm up to 535000 on mine and away to replace the bearings just because I'm doing new rotors. they have only been adjusted 3 times over the life of the car and it is a 20 minute job. I have checked them yearly but zero issues.
@@8507duke you've missed the point. The maintenance calls for repacking. That's like not replacing spark plugs at 100k, because there's no misfire. A mechanic would, and has been fired for such things.

Thanks for your honesty car Wizard. I own pretty much all my cars, trucks and mini van since 1980. Many of them last for a very long time. For some I sold it to buy a new one or give it away to friends. The oldest on is 1996 4runner Limited 4X4 (300,000 miles) still running today (2023). Body and frame are still original and no rusting. My newest purchased was 2021 Rav4 Limited. My 2004 Tundra Limited Double cap (230,000 miles) still running like new. 2014 Camry Sport , 2019 Camry Sport, and 2017 Lexus IS350 are pretty good condition. Brilliant video as always wizard. Here in Iran the most popular SUV SOLD is Land cruisers prado and Amazon followed by BMW, Benz, Lexsus. Keep up the good work 👍👌
I learned a while back that the best way to get an honest answer is to simply state the symptoms and relevant information for diagnosis, not what you think is wrong with it. That way you don't bias their diagnosis or have any chance to sell you on unnecessary work. Same goes for selling things, often cars. Offer relevant information, but I find the more I talk the less money I get. In short, be honest, but don't word vomit or you'll lose money.
I have a 2007 UZJ100R - Sahara. One of the last ever production month before they went to the 200 series. It has 304,000 KM's on it now, 13 years later.. And it has NEVER failed me... The only service item that wasnt in the book was a slight leak on the Thermostat housing, which was due in part to my mechanic not using the proper gasket maker from Toyo (He used high temp sillicone instead). This was quickly fixed, about 5 years back. We took it off as part of the Timing belt change @150KM. 2 Trips around Australia in that time, and normall about 20m000KM per year driving. Just important that you do the service every 10,000KM, and the Timking Belt every 150,000KM. Change the fluids when they need it, and the brakes/pads/rotos when they need it. I have mine converted to run on LPG Gas (Common here is Australia), So it is cheaper to run than a Diesel.

Change the Heater Hose Tee's! They are ready to crumble by now, and when they go they will take the motor with them. It's an immediate evacuation of the coolant system, and the aluminum heads will be screwed by the time you notice the over heating.

I agree 100%
Love those land cruisers. All my Toyota trucks have gone to 300k before needing anything.
I like how honest and clear you are, you are best..thank you for these videos..
As a Denali owner I am offen.... Nah, youre right. ;-) Denali is fun but I have a Lexus as well for obvious reasons.
May God continue to bless you and your family Car Wizard! Glad we have such an honest master mechanic nearby!
100 and 200 series owner here. This guy rocks, just like my local guy, always honest and it's a breath of fresh air. My guy and Mr wizard, will never run out of work. Cheers mate.
I have lived in the outback almost all my life . Land cruisers are the best . Land rovers fall apart
Really even old Defenders? I think you are talking shit mate.
Basically anything has the Land Cruiser badge on it which also includes Land Cruiser Prado and the Land Cruiser 70 series (which we still get new in 2020)
Nice!
On the valve covers! Just a tip since I've played a lot with these engines, the bolts are usually loose on the covers, a little snugging and the seaping stops 👍
Same with my 05 Tundra
...and my 02’ & 05’ Tundras
I really liked this video, when I was a dealership technician I always wanted to wright a small book or pamphlet on does and don’ts for customers. That was long before computers and videos. You covered one of my main don’ts in your video. Great job, thanks.
My 2000 LX 470 (cousin to this) has 300k miles and it runs like a champ 💪
I have a 2000 LX470 too, and the only things I seem to be upset about is the gas mileage.
@@criswireless1976what are you averaging? Mpg
FORMER CHRYSLER ENGINEER: I only buy and drive Toyotas, and I DO NOT allow any of my family to buy anything else.
Of course you have a sour taste in your mouth.. you worked for dodge. Lmfao
I’ve had so many people talk shit about me when I say General Motors makes terrible cars because of their quality control
Controlling much?
You're not the first person I've heard say that about the Big 3 (and I live in the Motor City!).
AK Safwat no he doesn’t want his family to suffer through the pain and hair pulling agony of owning a dookie quality Chrysler product
If you're going into the desert...ALWAYS TAKE A TOYOTA. I don't know why, but they last forever in the sand box!
Toyota's biggest weakness was North American winters. Plenty of box frame Tacos rusted out. The box frames were stronger than C frames (hence why trucks like the Hilux could take a beating), but salty water from the roads ate them out.
@@spyderf16 those box frames weren't built by Toyota. They sued the company that did
Welcome To The Madness terrorists drive fords too and a plumber who’s sticker was still on the truck from Texas can tell you it for a fact
spyderf16 yea nothing you said is true
@@spyderf16 Tacos don't like water, they get soggy. Hot sauce is good on them tho. Never heard of a box frame taco.
Haha I have always said that. Look at what people are driving in war torn countries.......the ones still running are Toyota’s.
Dont forget Mercedes W124/W123 Diesels!!
As an '06 Landcruiser owner I'm loving how much he's talking up this vehicle.
That Land Cruiser is a beauty. Crazy my '99 is an exact copy except a few minor cosmetics. Don't fix what isn't broke!
Same I have an 05 100 series they are AMAZING
I have a 2000 4runner, not the same vehicle but man is the styling similar
Except 99 or 98 was the last year with rear locker
love my 80 Series!:D
I know the video is two years old, but I'll make the comment anyway. I lived in Australia for a few years and my brother in law (who has lived there 45 years) said let's do a desert trip. We traveled 10,000 miles all through the center and the north. I absolutely loved it. He had a Discovery and we had problems in Alice Springs. Literally, every vehicle you see in the outback is a Landcruiser and parts are plentiful. You don't see Range Rover's or Discovery's. We needed parts. Discovery parts ? No way. Everything had to be flown in and it took days to get it fixed
So, buy a Landcruiser NOT a Discovery
I was expecting the muffler. Had to replace mine on my 1999 Land Cruiser. Same problem and super common. But, no doubt, Land Cruiser's are amazingly well built.
Same here. 2001. Needed a new muffler
Yeah I was confused, I was listening for a knock but the only thing I was thinking was; "Are they really that loud normally?" "Where is the knock?".
I had a car once with an exhaust leak, it had a clamp rust out and snap off and it sounded just like this, although it was by the upper exhaust.
Same our exhaust was making weird noises I guess exhaust components failing on the 100 series is common
Just wanted to say I am really impressed with your channel growth and the way you have adapted and grown with the subs, truthfully I did not think you were comfortable in front of the camera and your channel was not going to go anywhere because Hoovie had all the personality. But the more you relaxed in front of the camera, your personality has revealed itself you really have filled the spot now that you found your legs. Congrats and continued success. Remember to take care of yourself and don't burn yourself out, many people don't realize it is a high-pressure situation, whether they admit it or not, so take it easy. Peace
Love the Land Cruiser! Sold my 100 series with 370,000 miles. Had the exact same issue with the muffler rusting through
Do you regret selling it?
BEST ADVICE EVER!!! NEVER tell a shop what you think the problem is! It just opens up the door to you getting screwed!
2010 FJ Cruiser... so durable, I'm leaving it to my son in my will.....
And he's not even born yet? Lol
And your son to your grand son...and great grand son ...and great great grand son...
ive got a 2012 i bought used a year ago love that vehicle and wizzard will think im crazy i bought it at 154,000 miles but toyotas are tanks. like he said they dont leak i took it for and oil change they said at its oil filter cartridge location its leaking oil yes u can see something that looks like oil but i keep and eye on the oil level its not even went down. i did do the brakes on mine my pads were bad i was almost metal on them got rotors and pads for all 4 corners as i wanted them all done at the same time now that was hard my driver side pins for the pads were coroded in the caliper that was not fun getting out.
That's why most families in dubai drive toyota land cruiser, reliability, freezing a/c specially in dubai hot weather, parts everywhere if needed and high resale value.. Toyota is the best 👍👍👍👍
Make sure you leave him enough for gas.
@@saadgt2009 Exactly right!!!
I had a mechanic like that but he retired... miss that guy so much
You are a good man, Mr. Wizard.
Land cruiser front wheel bearings need repacking and adjusted as maintenance every 30k
@@neildutton8077 Sorry Neil, I definitely did. You are right on about the recommended maintenance.
Thank you, Mr. Car Wizard, for the very important lesson on what not to say to the folks at the repair shop.
Also, never say to a mechanic: ‘Take your time’
why
@@adzansyahputra2675 you will be low priority and someone 5 days later with a big project jumps a head and then next week 3 other jobs. Then 3 weeks later he gets to your car and then you have to wait for parts. I said that and got my car a month later
A job that could be done quickly on the spot suddenly becomes confused when it has to have a work order handled by multiple different mechanics after the fact
We have these in Dubai and my gosh these are hella reliable! Greetings from the UAE :)
Do you guys get the 79 series over there?
Which ones do yu mean sir? GM trucks?
Pascal Chauvet he’s referring to the land cruiser. In Dubai I believe they have diesel options too
@@kevinj9315 They certainly sell diesel ones in the UK - do they not sell them in the US?
Honestly in the Middle East we have loads of LCs legit it’s a staple. We have the 70 series in 2-4door and the pickup truck version. i6 and v8 engine options but diesel is getting more common in the past 3-4 years too but gas is king for now
Thank you so much Car Wizard for being such an honest mechanic.
I found one mechanic that I trusted a few years back and I still go to them, even tho I've since moved and it's 35 min farther. When you find a mechanic that does good work and you trust.... don't ever leave lol. Also Toyotas are so solid, I won't ever buy anything else at this point.
I go to a mechanic 860 miles away when I can since I still every year, visit where I used to live. It's very hard to find anyone that is honest in any business
Me either!! I love my Camry & Rav4
Wizzard you are straight, trustworthy and ethical as my mechanic here in Costa Rica, this vid says a lot of you and you character. Your clients are lucky to have you. Great vid man!!!!
Good honest mechanics are hard to find these days. Thank you for the work and the content. :)
Honest customers are also hard to find these days
My one trick with Mechanics, I don't have a problem with changing whatever is faulty for as long as you give me the faulty old part. And by doing that nowadays I repair my cars.
That's how you learn.
Is it WRONG that i watch the Wizard before Hoovie when they post at the same time ?
It's wrong.
Lol me to!
Same here 👍
90% of the time you are gonna get the Wizard in a Hoovie video. However, I find myself doing the same thing.
Hoovie is becoming stale look I bought a $100,000 dollar hooptie
If you want a reliable cars and truck, you can buy one see how it work for you.
This video is for people with no car knowledge at all. Respect to all the honest mechanics and 🖕🏼 to the ones not so
Brilliant video as always wizard. Here in Iran the most popular SUV SOLD is Land cruisers prado and Amazon followed by BMW, Benz, Lexsus. Keep up the good work 👍👌
Wizard my 2000 LX 470 has 325,000 steel runs fine.
I'm so glad I bought a Toyota truck. Mechanics always have nice things to say about them :)
Thanks for the nice video guys!!!!
Wizard the honest mechanic, an endangered species amongst the members of todays society.😊😊😊Well done Wizard, keep it up.
You are one of most honest mechanic I have seen. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Cv boots leaking wizard I’d do that while you have the bearing off and super common is another exhaust leak sound is cracked exhaust manifolds you’ll hear it more when it’s cold
I noticed that as well, inner drive shaft boot has lost a lot of grease.
Surprised he didn't mention it after going on about how experienced and good he is
He's elsewhere mentioned how you do the job the customer wants, and nothing else. Good way to lose a customer.
Now, of course he could have called Custo off camera and discussed without mentioning.

Saudi's really love the LAND CRUISER doesnt matter If its a LX470 or LX570 or the smaller LC PRADO, FJ CRUISER or GX-460 these cars were always reliable and indestructable and very easy to fix either minor or major jobs... toyota made a huge impact and success for these cars....

I enjoy how the Wizard walks us through how to diagnose and what to look for. I learn a lot.
Am i weird for loving that damn glass headlamp? I miss those.

Such a beautiful car, I predict a few decades from now this gen will go up in value.
You improved my opinion of the shop I’ve been using, they have talked me out of my “self diagnosed” maintenance and repairs at least once so far. Great videos, I appreciate you sharing your experience and expertise.
I hope you have time to do a video on the wheel bearings and exhaust! I currently have the same issues with my lx470. Thanks Wizard! Love your videos
This is why it's always good to find a local technician/shop that you can trust, even if they cost a little more.

You have three times more miles to cover - problem free. Just put good oil in it, change it regularly and go with genuine parts.
Best vehicles ever made.
Almost like listening to Scotty Kilmner 😜 no but a great car indeed and a very valid topic about garages ripping us off, all the time. Great video as always Wizard, we need more people like you in this world.
Of the few times I've ever taken my car to a shop, even when I have and idea of the problem, I don't offer that info. I don't want to lead the jury.
I am fortunate to have a Car Wizard to service our vehicles.
Hey wizard, you left out another fine member of that family , the awesome GX470! It’s only weakness is the air suspension, but that can be worked around!
The GX is built on the Prado platform so technically he didn't leave it out :P
I like this Car wizard guy. He's very honest which is rare to find nowadays. I've finally found a local honest, and reliable mechanic. Unfortunately, he's in his 60's and thinking about retiring soon. I will miss this guy when he does retire.
Whoever gets to be an apprentice for Wizard is one lucky individual.
I worked and lived in the Australian outback for a while. Toyotas are the most popular and reliable vehicle by a very large margin.
Sometimes your videos make me feel smart. I was wondering if the exhaust was somehow part of the problem. 😁 Mostly I'm in awe of how good at this you are. Thanks for all the great info.
you are seriously a honest mechanic... God bless u.
He can quote hoovie an engine, he knows he will pay for it anyway.
Change the Heater Hose Tee's! They are ready to crumble by now, and when they go they will take the motor with them. It's an immediate evacuation of the coolant system, and the aluminum heads will be screwed by the time you notice the over heating.
My 4.7 had leaky valve covers because of loose valve cover gaskets. I'm sure after almost 20 years and 200,000 miles it could use new gaskets but I tightened the valve covers and no leak. That was 10,000 miles ago
I’ve got 2 first gen Tundras with the 4.7 in them. You are exactly right...10mm socket & extension and 10 minutes and there will be no more leak
Mr. WIZARD, thank you for being an honest person. I love watching your car videos.
