One of my many rescues over the years was an "old" male (our vet labeled him as old) whose sneezing habits nearly always included long snot-ropes that landed whichever way Used Cat happened to be facing at the time. He had basically given up on life, reclining on a concrete garage floor in the dead of winter (cat-sized openings bracketed each side of the door), roaming for however many years and likely impregnating many females. After getting him warm, I made the vet appointment for the next morning, sequestering him in a bathroom overnight. Used Cat literally sprayed every surface he could access, lol, and became the house "shoulder cat". Old as he was, he lived another 10 very good years with us.
I just started watching the Netflix series "Away". 3 minutes into episode 1, I notice an actor with a small, one line, role, and for the life of me I know that I recognize him but can't place from where. Then like lightning, it HITS me. It's Dr. Uri the helpful Vancouver Vet! Sure enough, I check IMDB and there he is, credited as "Russian Reporter" in episode 1 of "Away" - Uri Burstyn. Sir, I am amazed that you are both a veterinarian AND a working actor. What even is your life?
My cat Sherlock died from Kidney disease at 17 yrs old and yes he was losing weight. I was devastated when Vet said he had to be put down..I blamed myself for not taking care of him better. I was going thru so much at that time. My stupid boss got 3 Rottweiler puppies that I had to take care of. I found awesome homes for two but the third I kept. And oh my goodness he took ALL my time. But I loved him very much . I basically neglected my poor cat. And that was 2006. Now I don’t have either pet. Both are long gone. We have adopted a stray cat who just showed up one day. Apparently his old owner got a dog and he ran away. Well we had no pets at the time so we took him in and love Oliver very much. He’s an orange long haired Maine coon. The most beautiful cat I’ve ever seen. He’s my snuggle bug. Poor baby just wanted a home that he can be loved in. I love dogs too but can’t adopt one as long as my Oliver is alive. He would run away again and I can’t do that to him.
I have a black cat named Boo. He used to be a pretty crazy cat and would get fired up and energetic if you pet him for too long. I watched your videos on how to pick up your cat and how to pet our cat like a pro and now my cat loves to cuddle and almost never attacks me. Thank you for your wonderful tips!
Try to drain some energy out of him every day through a few minutes of playtime aswell if you aren't already, especially if he's an indoor cat. Relieving that tension makes it less likely for them to get over-stimulated from a bit of petting.
I definitely concur with the beginning sentiment that keeping an eye on a cats body weight is crucial. My senior cat (who acts like a young cat still) suddenly lost weight over the course of a few months, but it wasn't so drastic that I noticed it immediately. It turns out he has hyperthyroidism, which is a common development in older cats, but could have been managed sooner if I had paid more attention. Thank you, Doc! ♥️
Wish I would have caught the changes in my gentleman before it was too late ... this litter box would have helped tremendously! He was diagnosed with cancer the day before he turned 17, one week after his birthday he was gone... I miss him so much!
Holy crap, I was browsing through Netflix and was watching the trailer for "Away" and saw some reporter guy that looked super familiar...i racked my brain for a second and realized it was you! Congrats!
Yuri Talking about creating spreadsheets of cats weight is unusual reminded me of a time when we moved in together with my boyfriend and one of his cats got a bit overweight (>6 kg for a female is a lot!) so I was weighing her every day, writing down what kind of food she ate and how much grams (exactly!), her mood and if she exercised (by that I mean active play, - she is not very playful usually). After one year we came back to our vet and I showed her all my spreadsheets, she was very impressed, also cat was normal weight again :) I'm a proud cat mom
Honestly I am looking to become a cat dad for the first time in the next month or so here so these videos are EXTRA helpful to me right now. Thanks for making them
I swear uri is the most WHOLESOME and approachable person I have ever seen if I needed help and saw him I would totally go and ask him bc he don’t look dodgy
Thanks, Dr. :D I recently saved my kitty because I was keeping a close eye on the litter. One night he peed but the smell was higher than normal. I looked and it was small. Kept getting smaller for a day, then almost nothing. Called the vet and brought him in ASAP. He got away with only a bladder infection and antibiotics. But the vet said another day and we would have needed much more to save him. Time is of the essence. I knew because of another late cat who had the same issue, but he had stones that required $3000 surgery to fix and save him. I've been on the look out ever since.
Thank you for making this video! My cat has early stage kidney disease, and I keep a hawk's eye on both her weight and her litter habits. I never thought I'd spend so much time learning and monitoring cat poop! :D She is also a pro digger and litter sprinkler. She loves pawing at the walls of the litterbox for ages, especially in the middle of the night. So hers is covered, but it gets checked and cleaned 4+ times/day, and I keep the front permanently open for extra ventilation.
Looks really cool. Wish this was available when Grayce was a kitten. That was 13 yrs ago. She's pretty healthy but has gained some weight. I know it's my fault I can't say no sometimes. Pirate you are so beautiful. (I have a covered litter box. Its cleaned daily - might miss a weekend day.) Squish your cat.
Since 3 weeks my boyfriend and I have a kitten (Norwegian Forest cat x Persian mix) and we love him to death. I check and clean out his litterbox everyday and I even look at the color and consistency of the 'deposits' 😅 I just want to check if he is healthy but sometimes I feel like I am over analyzing him. Glad to hear there is no such thing as drinking too little😊
Dr.Uri, I have learned so much from you. Miss Lucy (my beautiful rescue Calico) & I thank you. I adore your Channel.Thank you so much.Mr.Pirate is just gorgeous. X x
Helpful Vancouver Vet We did this with our kittens and it helped a lot! We also kept a toy nearby so when they started to get bitey, we gave the toy to them.
Man. Seeing this I think it is the coolest to be friends with a vet when "your people" are cats. It helps to always have a buddy to ask for professional advice when it comes to your fur baby. One of my good friends is a midwife and all of her friends now having babys ask her for advice (which annoys her sometimes haha, but mostly she is happy to help). So, a vet buddy to me would feel like my friend to her other mommy friends - Finally having someone around that understands and you can call when you feel your baby isn't well. And - I heard some special vets glow pink in the dark. That is cool, too.
I’m a new cat mom, adopted him at the end of June 2020, and I feel like I’ve done enough research for a new cat owner, but your videos are soooo much better on explaining the things on details without rambles.
Love this video! Can you do a video on cats and diarrhea? I am at a loss with one of my cats. Vets have put her on 3 different kinds of prescription food, antibiotics, dewormer, steroids, probiotics & nothing seems to work. They told us she has IBD but her only symptom is the diarrhea. Her weight is fine, she eats good and she is always active and has great energy.
My cat Max ate only wet food. I never saw him drink. I always gave him fresh water, but he never drank it. Until he got older, when I caught him a couple of times drinking out of the toilet and then when I was filling the humidifier. Vet visit: hyperthyroidism. He had lost a little weight too. I caught it in time.
This video is such perfect timing for me! I noticed a week or so ago that my 16 year old cat has been drinking a LOT and peeing absolute rivers as a result, but also very hungry and eating has increased but she's lost weight. Took her to the vet on Friday and she's had some bloodwork done and we should get the results in a day or so. After examining her she said she would put money on it being a thyroid issue, with possibility of some kidney disease due to age. Hopefully its something reasonably manageable. Love your videos, they've been really helpful to me living with a senior cat :)
Haha that was me a couple years ago because my parents never liked cats. Found one in the garden that we were planning on giving away now she's been here for 2 years
Clawdette? New kitty? Beautiful baby! My most friendly cats have had a game that involved grabbing as much litter in their paws then running for my bedroom. The one who deposits the most litter on the bed wins. If the bed is unmade, getting it between the sheets means extra points!
Helpful Vancouver Vet my cats have other names for their different personalities. Things like Mischief and Managed instead of Fred and George, Pretty Girl or Meatloaf rather than Cleopatra, and My Boy instead of Grendel.
I’ve been watching this channel for a while now! I saw a previous comment where someone said you should have your own Netflix show, and you commented preferably a sci-fi. Now as an avid cat AND space lover, I believe I caught you in a cameo on Netflix’s new show Away? Looked just like you! Much love to this channel and it’s lovely vet
Hahaha I'm the person with the spreadsheet! I put a shallow box, like a wet food box, on top of my digital bathroom scale and lure with a small treat so my cat sits still comfortably in the box. I used to hold her and do the subtraction method too, but then I had to fight the demons of knowing my own weight so consistently. :( My cat has a very consistent routine, almost always 3-4 pees a day and 1 poop, scooped twice a day.
Watched that video and I don't regret it. Its hilarious lol On the other hand that litter box looks amazingly designed. The cat gets its full privacy and you get otherwise difficult to access data about your cat to ascertain its health
My mom is a retired healthcare worker. My parents adopted a six month old kitty with giardia, clostridium and feline corona and she is a spreadsheet cat too, ha ha. Well, not so much anymore, as she fortunately got better and has now had good poops for months, but it was scary. She's an expensive little lady vet-wise, but she's so worth it. They all are.
I supported the project, my beloved 13 year old cat, Monk has idiopathic cystitis and develops crystals sometimes even on appropriate prescription diet. I generally catch his symptoms early, but this litter box would be an incredibly helpful tool and stop me from spending days stalking and staking out the litter box. Lol
Great info! I ❤ that partiular catbox idea. . . TL;DR I'm having to surrender my special needs Bengals. Included with individual 'owner's manuals' for each cat. I recommend this channel among several others for helpful ideas. I always learn something new! (The genetic chicken/egg specific allergy with poultry in general has priced me out of pet ownership. Along with the suggested G.I. tests to see if one's IBS isn't a birth defect. Before purchase I had budgeted for monthly food around $89 not $200+, I had not budgeted for multiple vet visits until old age...) It sucks because other than G.I. issues the boys are in perfect health.
Chan Valentine I’m so sorry you have to give up your babies. Right now I’m praying that nothing goes wrong with my eldest because almost any vet bill will break the budget for months!
While we were working through the diagnostic process with my elderly cat with several distinct chronic health problems, I kept a log of how much she ate, drank, and used the litterbox as well as other stuff like her asthma attacks and weight (I weighed her weekly). It was actually pretty easy using a custom google form I made for the purpose. Took about 5 mins/day. I haven't been doing it lately because she's pretty stable now, but maybe I'll start it again.
I rescued 2 kittens about 2 months ago, they were in a barn, just left to breed. The man never bothered to take them to a vet. My dad wanted a cat to keep rabbits out of our garden, so we got them at 9 weeks old. We got a blue tortoiseshell and a calico. When we got the calico, she was very sick. She had a respiratory infection for, who knows how long! We let it slide for about a week, well, I didn’t 😂 I could tell she was very sick, she wouldn’t eat or drink unless we put her in a box and brought her inside, she slept all day (probably a fever), her poop was like water, and her eyes were constantly covered in yellow crust. Finally, my dad took them to a vet, but they refused to treat the kittens because they were too busy and they were less than 2 pounds (can I remind you they were about 10 weeks old?) we called every vet we could find, and no one would take her in. The vet we went to said it was a respiratory infection (which we guessed it was) and it would easily turn into pneumonia. Since she was so young and weighed so little there was little chance she would make it. They said don’t be surprised if she dies. On the way home, we found one last vet. We called them, and they offered to see her. They gave us respiratory infection medicine and eye medicine. Now, about 2 months later, she is happy and healthy. She plays with the other kitten, the blue tortoiseshell whom we named Twix. The calico’s name is Kit Kat. Her eyes are still a bit pink, but no more yellow crust, and she if actually a bit more on the chubby side, while Twix is tall and skinny. She will be perfectly fine now, and soon we are going to take them to a vet to be spayed/neutered and get vaccinations. And can I say, when we first got them they were going to be outside cats, but now they live in our garage 😂 Kit Kat even caught a hummingbird and a mouse!
you will never get enough thanks for doing these videos ^^ but much thanks they help i've learned new things about my cat's i didn't know and also how to take better care of them
Mr Pirate say i want to see My owners say and Dr. Uri Say not today hahahha his face just adorable and the way he keep wanting to be facing Dr.Uri so funny i love him so much :) :) :)
I keep my kitty's litter box in the bathroom so I always check it whenever I go to the bathroom as well. No one likes to use a dirty toilet, so I always make sure to double check! :)
well... i beg to differ on the always drinking enough. my cat had a very unusual reaction to something (emerged day after immunizations, which stress him out) - stopped eating and drinking and his tongue was hanging out and he was drooling. it turned out he had very painful ulcers all over his tongue and couldn't bare to drink, groom, eat. 3 trips to vets (injected fluids) - didn't drink at all for 5 days. steroids kicked in and he started drinking then eating again.
8:08 i assume you mean scooping(I change the litter and actually clean the box about 2 or 3 times a month, but I have 5 litter boxes for my 4 cats) but i wish more people did this. i feel so sad when i see a box full of pees and poops in someone's house. i do my best to scoop within a minute after every time they go, but that is mainly because ive been trained to do that as my maine coon can get into a big mess if his poops are soft and he steps on them or some gets stuck in his fur. Claw-dette is a dead ringer for one of mine too :)
I weigh my old cat daily and smooth the data with a 5 day simple moving average. Yep, like he says, because I'm a physicist. But it does quickly show when there is some change either positive or negative. Also daily weighing means the cat gets used to it and is easier to weigh after a while. A set of baby scales are good for this, cheap and accurate. For kidney disease, PorusOne daily. It's new product and it's a life saver for cats with CKD.
helpful tips for cat appetites in general, please? my elder adoptee refuses to eat anything i give her, other than treats... i tried starving her, but she doesnt give in. i get worried that she hasnt eaten in so long, so i cave and give her more treats...
Please have a look at this video ua-cam.com/video/AalAw9Fqhyo/v-deo.html in which I talk about understanding how cats eat and this one ua-cam.com/video/8XTClouSp9c/v-deo.html on how to get a cat to eat new food. They are full of advice that will help! Getting renal kittys to eat can certainly be a struggle. If your cat's appetite has suddenly dipped, and you haven't done so already, please check in with your vet for a blood and urine test. The above will only work if your cat is well hydrated and not suffering a urinary tract infection.
My cat just walked up to me, did a big wet sneeze on me, then walked away. I love him.
Thank you for sharing. #felinefriends
thanks, i cracked up laughing lmao
cats are wonderful arseholes and i'd never trade mine for the world
You’ve literally been blessed.

Why are people so weirdly obsessed with cat butts?

I ask myself that question on the regular :-)
I honestly don‘t even own a cat. I‘m only subscribed to you because I love to watch how genuinely and loving you interact with them! Keep it up :)
Mr. Pirate is just super loveable and cute!

Haha! Mission accomplished 🙂
I wanted to do that to remind my self that i have not had a cat for over 10 years.

I got hungry reading your names for your cats.

I keep my kitty's litter box in the bathroom so I always check it whenever I go to the bathroom as well. No one likes to use a dirty toilet, so I always make sure to double check! :)
Your back!
congratulations on your Netflix debut Doc :)
Why thank you! Let's hope it is the first of many ;-).
I just saw your cameo on the Netflix series Away!
When I was a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian. But then I became allergic to cats and horses.
Your videos make me very happy. Thank you very much!
Mr. Pirate's face is obscenely cute. I'm gonna tell my feline son so he can GET him to assert cute dominance. 😻
Ik this sounds cliche, but my cat and I had a terrible relationship before discovering you 😂😂😂😂😂
I love your videos so much
well... i beg to differ on the always drinking enough. my cat had a very unusual reaction to something (emerged day after immunizations, which stress him out) - stopped eating and drinking and his tongue was hanging out and he was drooling. it turned out he had very painful ulcers all over his tongue and couldn't bare to drink, groom, eat. 3 trips to vets (injected fluids) - didn't drink at all for 5 days. steroids kicked in and he started drinking then eating again.
This was a great and informative video, Doctor ! I wish I lived in Vancouver ❤️Everything you said made purrfect sense👍
Now, to convince people to watch this who insist on using robotic litterboxes...
It'll be preaching to the choir, but I'll be here anyway! ❤️
Chubby Mr P. He isn't worried about it, though. He is a professional shoulder kitty
Any tips on how to get cats on renal diet to eat more food?
helpful tips for cat appetites in general, please? my elder adoptee refuses to eat anything i give her, other than treats... i tried starving her, but she doesnt give in. i get worried that she hasnt eaten in so long, so i cave and give her more treats...
