Little Clawdia just wanting snuggles at the beginning is the cutest!
I love that it's spelled like that
I have found that wetting a washcloth, wringing it out well, and then gently wiping down my cats helps in very hot weather. This moistens them just enough to aid in evaporative cooling, and is a quick and easy way to help them out without traumatizing/annoying them.
I brush my cat and then wipe him down with a damp washcloth--he really enjoys that.
Yeah, I have a washcloth designated to the cat too lol.
That's what I did at first but have since moved on to the mister. They were never afraid of getting squirted and saw it as a game so now I can mist my boy down and he comes back for more! he even will stand there until his fur is dripping wet. With my apartment getting up to 30 to 40 celcius it's brutal.
I did similar just using my wet hands to wipe them down. Now one of them comes running every time I turn the tap on, even if its not hot at all 😂
Sometimes I randomly offer a bowl of water to my cat when she's nearby. She often accepts it, despite always having access to the bowl. It's kind of fun to watch, honestly.
Sounds like she's a social drinker lol
Vinity hates drinking alone.
I love how he is preserving Claudias dignity by keeping her tail down for the camera😂
This is so topical. I just bought a marble slab for my cats to splay out on.
Lucky cats!
Hmmm, I would be interested in getting a slab. Where did you get yours? I’m soooo not handy!
Great! Can you ( I'm not American though) where I may find one"? & think ok for a 14 yr elderly - senior cat"?
Check with places that make custom stone countertops. Sometimes they may even have leftover bits and pieces they might be happy to give away. There’s a place in my town with a dumpster full that you can rummage through.
@@tiffanyroseangeles7517 I got a large stone floor tile for my babies! My girls are big so I got a 24x24 tile but I think 18x18 might be good for normal sized cats
My young male black cat is such a cuddle monster that still wants to cuddle next me on 30°C days
Mine loves to snuggle while sleeping.. which I love in the winter and all other times of the year.. but summer too?! and he's soo warm!
Where I live, 30°C is considered as cool weather 😩
My old guy handles the hot weather better than I do, but he has his special cooling spots on the wood floor under the sofa and under the bed, both get air movement from tower fans I have in the house. But no matter how hot it gets, he still likes to sprawl out in the sun when it's coming directly through the windows.
Mmmm, who doesn’t like napping in a sunbeam 🤗
@@lornarettig3215 GARFIELD !!!
He wanders with the sunbeams.
@@karindickinson7993 haha, yes! Irresistible! 😽
Hi ! If you don't mind me ?? How old is your dude" & what kind of cat is he
Karin Dickinson lol!!!
Clawdia is the cutest name for this cute furbaby 😻
My elderly, underweight cat acts like she's freezing as soon as the house drops below 80°. She naps on her heating pad all day and snuggles under the blanket with me at night.
At one time we had 3 cats ! Guess, were they were at night ?
Easy to guess !!! With me under my duvet .Sometimes my body was on fire. ♥️🐈🐈🐈♥️🔥🌞🔥♥️
Might want to check out my vid on hyperthyroidism: ua-cam.com/video/OBSL7C6vKQE/v-deo.html

@@shannonbarthelette4749 She gets blood work done, but I'm going to ask the vet if thyroid is included in that!

Oh I didn't know about wetting the back of the ear! Thank you Dr Uri! You give us so much critical knowledge about our precious ones!
My cat threw up from the heat wave where I live, and it made me feel like like such a horrible cat owner. I felt so helpless. Thank you so much for this video 🥺
I added ice cubes to their water fountain and they loved it. One of them in particular, would lick them. It helped them though the brutal 40 plus heatwave.
I worry about ice cubes in the water because I'm afraid if they lick them their tongue will get stuck to them.
@@jacquelynpowell7964 That's actually a good point but I saw them licking the ice cubes and there was no issue. Maybe their prickly tongues are less prone to that that ours?
@@jacquelynpowell7964 a tongue wouldnt stick to an ice cube in water because it is already coated in liquid water
Thank you for this video! My mom is concerned about our two cats and the heat waves we keep getting in Spain. They aren’t eating much (unless it’s wet food), and they’re showing they’re bellies more often too. Now I know the reason! I’ll keep an eye on their ears and if they’re hot and I’ll try to cool them down 🐈⬛ 🐈
well the fact that someone there still snuggle , maybe Dr. Uri is THAT cool 😎
My cat doesn’t like the noise of a fan, and I got him a special cool mat and hid it under the sheets on the bed, and he carefully went around it and slept in a different bit 😾 I might try the water-on-the-ears trick 🤷🏼♀️
Cat's can be so ungrateful! I often say I paid $85 for this small cat box and got a free pair of shoes, but he often doesn't give a single thought to things I buy specifically for him - except food and treats.
Keep on with it, as someone said cats don't like change, erm try food treats to get him on it a few times. Got my dear old cat to use steps up to my bed using food treats x 3 days. Now it is a habit for him.
I'd let the kitty be, unless it shows signs of distress.
I wish my cat was that snuggly... Her way to cope with Spanish heat is to hide under the toilet sink 😂
Smart cat!
That thumbnail just melted my heart. This is top wholesome content.
I just tried your suggestions on my older cat who has kidney disease. The water helped her so much! She visibly became more relaxed and even rolled over more and lifted her back leg to let me put more water on her tummy. Thank you so much for this valuable information!! 😻
Our older cat had kidney troubles, on hot days we'd bring a saucer with fresh cool water to her. She also enjoyed an ice-block in her water (not all cats like this). We'd rub a little water on her ears, belly, and pads of her paws. As she grew older she'd sit at the water-bowl, her way of saying: "😸Freshen my drink."
Clawdia (my cat name memorization needs work) just really wants to aim her butt at the camera.
Yep.....
@@HelpfulVancouverVet CLEARY she likes and trusts us too. I’ll take the compliment
@@HelpfulVancouverVet It means that's a very loved and clean kitty!
My cats are semi-outdoor cats. They go out, but they don't leave the yard. We have patches of ferns, and a raspberry patch, and they love sleeping in them during hot weather. They come back and their bodies are cool to the touch. Makes me wish I was a little critter, lol.
Clever cats! I’m sure they smell nice after napping in the ferns, too! 🤗
It's a bad idea to let cats outdoors. If they run away, there will be a good chance that they will not return.

Thanks Eyeore
@@maryann7619 ???
@@infinitecanadian Everyone is well aware of that. Some cats want adventure and fresh air. Their lives would be miserable if cooped up. Sometimes its better to live than stay safe all the time.
Came for the adorable kitty in the thumbnail, stayed for the very lucid and well-presented advice. Your videos are always worth watching!
We bought a cooling mat for our cat, but he never stayed on it, so these tips will be useful. Thanks for the great video!
Me too! Mine will randomly and literally throw himself onto half of it if it’s on the floor but doesn’t seek it out. So annoying because those things are pricey. Darned cat doesn’t realize I’m trying to spoil him!
Mine accepted it when I put a towel over it, so they don't have to touch the mat directly.
This was super helpful! We finally got my outside (turned inside) cat fixed a few days ago, and I’ve been trying to keep him as cool and comfy as possible. He really likes the desk fan I have and likes to loaf in front of it.
or your cat could do what my ants cat did when it was warm outside. and my cousins where in the kiddie pool. he would just jump in as well and just swim a bit. in later years the kiddie pool just became his pool.
but the look on peoples face when he would jump in.
Lol :-)
It became the kitty pool.
That’s awesome! Wish mine was more water friendly.
@@anggieb.2936 it's pretty uncommon. it's that there cat did it from a very young age. I have before and after that only seen cats just dip there front paw in water and then lick that.
I tried to convince mine water was when they were about 4 months because we hit 100+ here quite often. It didn’t work. It looks like they’re part Arabian Mau though and one of them hasn’t developed an undercoat yet at 7 months so I think they’ll be fine.
Yay!!! another vet video, just the therapy I needed!
Here in Seoul we had 35+C with 60+% humidity weather for nearly three weeks straight, my cat really liked the occasional ice packs i brought her
Mr. Pirate still has a kittenish face ❤️
Thank you so much for the helpful tips! My kitty has kidney and heart disease (she's 17!). Some of these (like wetting the tummy) will definitely help with my cat.
In my family we use wet towels that we put in the freezer. When our cats start showing sings of being too hot we take the towel out and drape it over them. It really seems to help on those extra hot days
And they are fine with it? Lol don’t run away?
Thank you so much for this video. I take care of a feral cat and the heat has me worried. Even though my brain knows they can handle the weather - my heart usually worries.
Hi Dr Uri! I don’t understand English by ear, but I love cats and looking at Mr. Pirate gives me pleasure ❤️ You are cool!
Thank you so much for this, especially the idea of stroking their tummy and ears with a little cold water.
I have always used a spray to add a little extra water to my cats food in the summer it just seemed the logical thing to do. So at least I am doing a good thing for her. Great advice as always :)
One of my cats refuses to eat wet food, so I got her a fountain. This single device has made a huge difference with her drinking, as she will stop by multiple times a day and take a hearty sip. The reservoir gets cleaned, changed and refilled every 2-3 days so it stays nice and clean (and apparently flavorful for her). I bought an Orsda stainless steel model and it has been a game changer for the girl. The other cat eats wet food, occasionally samples the stream and lounges in our Florida heat and humidity most of the day with no ill effects. The vets say they're both healthy and they seem very happy. Mission accomplished.
Came across your squish vid on a quota post and been voraciously viewing your vids the last 3 days! Definitely the BEST Chanel on UA-cam! Please keep posting! Love the vids n sent a couple to my sister, a vet in chicago. Thanks again!
Love how direct and to the point you are . So easy to understand !
I'm happy you mentioned panting, several years ago our very senior kitty (24yrs) began to pant after a week of high Summer heat. She'd never done it before, so we raced her to our local air-conditioned vet. Within minutes of being there, her panting stopped. We asked for her stay there overnight, as our home was still baking hot (45°C / 113°F)
I had to leave my home. When even getting up had my fluffy cat panting and my elderly cat started just, not responding when I petted him, time to flee. Carted six cats to my Mom's house.
I REALLY hope the tempts don't get like that again Ever.
We can handle 30-32 degree weather but not 40. My apartment is a hot box.
Good for you, Prince! Well done finding a cooler solution for all your fur-babies 😸
My place too. That was miserable.
Good thinking....my apartment was so hot...hated it. My blackout curtains helped but not enough. My cat and I got through it, but an elderly lady died in my building. sad...
It was so scary! I ended up locking my cats in the bathroom with me when it was 40+ because it was the only room I could keep cool.
@@Kilyra I wish that was an option. Today and yesterday I’ve been really strict in how I’m closing the blinds early morning. Closing the deck door.
I can tell the roof is the problem. I’m top floor and I think it’s heat leaching by the evening down to me.
But yesterday I think my apartment only got to 25 degrees so I’m hoping I can keep it well under the danger levels for the fluffits.
Hello doctor Uri, could you do a video about cat diabetes? My cat got diagnosed with diabetes recently and I’ve found there’s not a lot of videos about it other than videos showing how to give your cat insulin shots
Sure thing!
Clawdia is a star :) thanks for this video! Video requests: feline acne, and also feline asthma
We live in Hawaii, so my cats are used to it. I used to worry about it but I did some research and learned that cats can handle quite a lot of heat compared to us humans. I've never seen them panting or uncomfortable. My fat cat likes to sleep on her back with all four legs spread out though.
When at some point I get a cat in the future again I will refer to all these videos cos I remember asking all these questions n no one had an answer when I had my first cat. Never delete these! Also I love Claudia!!
One day we we found our 15 y-o cat curled up in a really strange spot for him, not really reacting to pets, etc. Fearing heat exhaustion, since he had just been outside, we did the water trick. The cat didn't like that and tried to move away, which is when we saw that he couldn't move his back legs. We immediately took him to the local vet, he was docile like he NEVER is at the vet, I was almost crying. The vet takes her out of her cage and she's wobbly and stiff but walking. When 20 minutes ago she had been dragging her back legs behind her. The vet gave her some blood thinning painkillers, in case it had been a mini-stroke and told us to keep the cat inside on the really hot days just in case. Never found out what was actually wrong with her, but afterwards she slept for the rest of the day in the coolest part of the house. I gave her her medicine for three days but she was pretty much back to her old self by the next day. Cats are weird.
Wow! I would have been right there with you on the tears! Glad he is doing ok!
love the shots of the cats at the end
As a mom of an indoor cat, this was very helpful, because I prefer not to use air conditioning. So she can definitely benefit from these cooling techniques.
Hello 👋, how are you?
THIS IS WHAT I NEED. THANK YOU
One of my cats who is no longer with us, loved hot weather. I know cats typically like hot weather though but she really, really liked it. The hotter the better for her. She would go outside in the boiling heat and sit around for hours. We always had a bowl of water outside for her and we checked on her regularly while she was outside. She was always happy as can be in the heat. Sometimes she would stay out until late at night and we would have to pick her up and bring her inside because she just wouldn’t move.
Good on you for addressing the root cause at the beginning of the video. And of course, for giving good advice as always.
A water fountain is a great investment. My cats love my pet fountain and seem to drink much more than they did from a bowl.
May I ask what brand you got? I’m looking to get one. Thanks
@@michaelkline884 I like the drinkwell platinum. It has a fairly large capacity. The cats drink much more water from it compared with water in a bowl. They love running water.
@@108hindu Thanks
Clawdia looks so close to my cat.
I'm in Canada too, maybe one of her relatives moved to Saskatchewan and had a litter or two
Thank you. Our elderly black cat has been struggling and we recently found out he's got the start of kidney disease. With this new heat wave, he's really only eating if I bring the wet food over to him so I was worried about that. It makes a world of difference knowing that it's kind of normal and it's okay if I just keep staying the course with that.
I love this vet and his adorable cats!
Thank you! 🔥 During the heat dome I stayed at home with my foster cat, instead of going to a cooled nice AC workplace and leaving her alone 😅 That’s how much I worried about her during this crazy temperatures.
i LOVE THIS MAN
Our bathroom floor is ceramic tile. It's Princess's favorite place to lie when it's hot.
My cat sleeps on the kitchen tiles or in the bathtub, he has long hair and he likes to stretch out on his stomach. My long hair mix Maincoon cat is outdoor cat, when he needs fresh running water , he meows in front of bathroom ‘s counter, then jumps on it to get to the open tap fresh water. My cat only eats cold , very cold food. His favourite spot outside is a very cool spot under a short Japanese maple tree .. he also like an ice cube in his water dish.
Very informative and straight to the point! Excellent video!

Trinidad and Tobago .in the house. My 7 cats love to lie on the wooden floors and not the concrete if they are inside, or between the shrubs on super hot days.
My old cat LOVED the tile floors at my mom’s house
The most helpful video about dealing with heat, thank you!
Great advice! Thank you...
Thank you for this video, and for acknowledging the cause for the new normal heat 👍🏼
Our senior cat really struggled with the heatwave we've had recently. her appetite definitely decreased, we were just glad she ate enough food to get her meds in. We bought a cooling pad which she's of course avoided like the plague (she took great effort to walk all around it and not set a paw on it). She thankfully loves loves loves the water fountain we just got. We're expecting another heatwave, adn i know she'll spend it in her summer quarters (the cardboard box living in the corridor). A lot of good advice here, I'll try some of those tricks next time...
Can the cooling pad be placed on top of your cat's cardboard box? If there are holes in the top of the box, cooled air passing over the pad will move down into the box
Thank you doc!
Your cats love you so much.
THANK YOU!!!! Book marked this for next summer. Love from Australia.
Always good to see Mr. Pirate
I only have air conditioning in the living room, which somewhat cools the kitchen too. But Velvet goes into the bedroom under the bed every summer. I wonder if it's instinct to go to the darkest, lowest place they can find. (I work nights, so there's blackout curtains in there and it's always very dark). She comes out to eat and play, so she should be able to feel the temperature difference. I even have to sleep in the living room when it gets hot, which it really does in my mobile home. But she always goes back to the bedroom.
We have the same situation going... AC in the living room, Max under the bed in warm bedroom... I don't think he likes the noise AC makes :(
Thank you very much
All good info, thanks!

Thanks for this. I took up all my rugs so the cats could lay on the wood floors while are cool and have fans in all the rooms. I noticed they liked being in the breeze from the fans. Your information about how their ears help in cooling explains why and I was happy Ito know was really helping. I will put out more in their favorite spots now.

Love your videos! Thank you!
Excellent suggestion before the cat part! (Also, the cat part.) Thank you, as always I love your videos.
We have just moved to a place thst routinely gets to over 115+ during the summer. One of my cats has very thick fur. Have had many cats over the years but none of them have fur as dense as her's. Thank you for this video! Really concerned about our kitty!
Make sure the water is CLEAN y’all
in my experience, trying to point a fan towards my cats has always resulted in them leaving the area, even at distances where the airflow is almost unperceptible.
not to mention air conditioners: they avoid them like they're devilish machines of evil; they prefer laying down on a pavement of a 30C hot room than staying in an air conditioned 24C room. I've been wondering if they feel the drop in humidity as something "wrong" and prefer to stay away.
the advice about putting some drops of water on them works great, but one should never throw or make fall the water drops on them, always put the water on your hands and then spread it on them to reassure the little guys.
SHADE THAT CAT!
So great to know. Thank u Dr
