I moved 5000km with my cat, 2 days in a ferry and 1000km in the car, and he had zero problems during the whole time! Other cats in ferry were scared and shishing at everyone passing by, and my boy always got up yawning and stretching, like "hi mommy, can we go for a walk now?". In the car he was watching passing cars and sleeping. But he's a special boy. So brave and curious, big boy, grew up with dogs and is more like a dog himself too. 😊❤
I work at a compounding pharmacy-- you can also get most medications in syringes filled with flavored creams! My cats love the tuna flavored medicines.
When we moved last year our cat stayed between the washer and dryer for the first 48 hours we were in our new home. I know she explored her new home at night while we were asleep as evidenced by her use of her litter box. She also had never done stairs before. She had the new experience of going up and down a flight of stairs and it was quite amusing to watch until she got used to them. By day three she was more at ease with her new surroundings and now she rules the roost:)!
My mom always tell me the story about the cat she had when she was a teen. Eventually she had to move out (not so far from the previous house) and her cat didn't like the new house. According to my mom, he was acting weird. A few days after the move , he ran away. They found him days later in her previous house. Btw, I love your videos!

The comment about "western world" was spot on :D I live in Russia, and gabapentin here is _not_ easy to find, _not_ cheap and it does _not_ go in tiny little capsules... It is also a prescription med, and vets are hesitant to give you an official prescription paper because it's a human med. Therefore, it's not really a go with a compounding pharmacy (and those are not really a big thing here). Luckily, I found a kind pharmacist who sold it to me when my kitty needed it. So, THEN, I had to open the capsule, dissolve the powder in normal saline and measure the dosage using a syringe... It is not quite easy to manage the dosage this way, so the next day, I was absolutely terrified for ~20 seconds when I woke up and found my cat sleeping on my chest (she never falls asleep on me) and not showing any reaction when I'm trying to wake her up... She did wake up eventually, so I wish I knew that gabapentin is a _really_ good sedative 😅 So, just a warning...)))
Good to know! It will probably be like that in the US pretty soon. Gabapentin is unfortunately abusable and very much overprescribed in the US... most states are beginning to keep track of it the same way we keep track of amphetamine and opioid prescriptions. I wouldn't be surprised if it is reclassified as a controlled substance in the next few years.

I've moved cats many times, some easy local moves and some across several states. Every cat seems to handle it differently. One cat loves to explore the new space, and it's fun to watch the "hey! I know that piece of furniture!" as he finds familiar things in a new place. Another cat stays in "low-flying aircraft" mode for a while, so we keep his new environment small and secure. A rural location can have predators that are way above the level of a house cat. Barn cats know how to say safe. Cats from the city can get into big trouble.
I'd rather argue that collars make your cat more visible to cars and with a bell protect wildlife from predation so they should be used, but you MUST use a special cat collar because it will have a quick release catch that will unclip if the cat gets stuck on something (like a protruding nail, or a hawk).
My cat wasnt exactly from the city, but a kinda suburban area, previously a stray, but that cat could take very good care of himself even after I moved rurally. He knew how to avoid predators pretty well, and cars, and how to butter people up. Thank you for another video full of great tips! Two months ago we moved houses with our dog and our three cats. We were so anxious about them being all stressed out but with proper preparation in the end it wasn't that bad. A few weeks before the move we started setting up a base camp in our old flat. We chose a spare bedroom and put a scratching tree, lots of fluffy pillows and blankets, a litter box and their toys in there. We also gradually started to move their dishes towards that room until we eventually fed them inside. Feliway was also plugged in. On the day of the move (we had a moving company) the pets would stay in basecamp room and my husband and I would take turns on hanging out with them in that room or being with the movers. At the end of the day my husband would take some items from base camp (like pillows and blankets, that had their scent on them) to the new flat while I stayed with our pets in basecamp in the old flat. He set up a another base camp in the new house, plugged in Feliway and put all of the things from the old flat there, so when the cats moved in they would immediately feel at home. The rest we did just like you said. We kept the new basecamp for about two weeks, the door was always open and our cats would explore the new place on their own. They really settled in great and luckily there was no need to give them any medication. Only one of our cats caused us a all a few restless nights by being up at night and meowing but he eventually calmed down. Also, thanks for mentioning the point of routine. Cats are such creatures of habits so it really helps to keep as many parts of the day to day routine constant. I really think that part also made a huge difference! Loved seeing Mr. Pirate and Clawdia in such good spirits. Good luck with your move!
This video couldn't have been uploaded at a better time for me. I'm about to move in a month and I was wondering how to best handle my 2 kitties in the process. Thank you very much for the tips, your videos have been very helpful to me many times!
My neighbors once had a cat (one of my best friends) but moved into a house 1km away a few years ago to save money. They had a big yard they didn't feel like taking care of, but the cat really loved staking out his territory there. . When the neighbors moved away, I was told the cat was super stressed as he tried to explore his new home. According to them, he kept trying to find the old trees, look for the old staircase, and repeatedly yowl at night. . Then he disappeared. He was very much an outdoor but could always find his way home. . The only problem was that home was his old home. I kept finding the cat staking out the old house and the big yard for weeks on end. . Not the best move for the cat, but I was happy to be close to my friend all the time.. . PS Thanks for all the cat videos. They're informative and wholesome and quite calming!
Dear Helpful Vancouver Vet, You are wonderful. Despite having never owned a cat, I love watching your videos. I think maybe there's something therapeutic about listening to you talk about cat stuff. You have a kind face, a voice people love to listen to, and Mr Pirate and Clawdia are super cute. Cat-loving men are the best. Big love from the UK.
I had to deal with fire just a week ago. I decided to make a video as well. I don't envy you. The minute you start packing and moving stuff, they do stress. I appreciate videos like this. Thank you. Heidi (Ozzie and Zeke)
Thank you so much for your videos. Sorry about Mister Pirate's arthritis. So glad you are together. We had a deaf cat that we moved three times. The last time, we stayed at someone's house overnight waiting for our furniture. We left Cleo overnight at the new house. When we got back in the morning, we could not find her anywhere in this empty house! Opened every cabinet, searched closets, tried to find any way she could escape. Of course calling and noise did no good. Finally, we found her in the fire place! She had slipped behind the screen. Our white cat was somewhat grey until we could get her cleaned up.
I watch these videos dreaming and wishing I could afford to move to Canada! Would move in a heartbeat and would adopt this vet as well. Love Pirate. Love this vet.
You are so awesome! I wish I had watched this before I moved . My two cats did fine. Joey 9yrs hid in the bathroom cabinet for 3 hours and my little girl Penelope 2.5 years did all the investigating of the new place. Slinking a bit. However I did the mom thing and decided to pull out all the toys first and with the litter still smelly so they would know it was theirs. Then I cleaned it. The last thing I did was a toy playing party every morning. It's been a week and we are enjoying the new place.
My personal experiences with my Cat's moving are....interesting, for example I have two both female "Callie and Layla" Callie is a very talkative outgoing Cat and how we keep her out of the way so to speak is, she LOVES boxes, so we take a box she marked as her favorite and we set it out nearby so she can relax there nap etc...Layla on the other hand is the opposite she finds the darkest place in the house which is usually a closet and just stays there for hours probably cursing our existence so I simply move her litter water and food into the closet so she can function effectively while I do other tasks. Other then that very good resource to have, I do have one question though: Any tips/tricks for Cats who like to hide behind objects? when I ask this I am refering to pull out drawers, because what happens is one of them likes to climb into drawers then go to the very back so I can't close it, and I basicly have to wait until they decide to climb out.
Great video thank you so much. We are moving across country on plane. Can you make a video giving tips about traveling on plane and moving? Thanks so much we love your videos💞
Yes please!!!!! I am moving back to the US from the netherlands soon and worried about taking my cat. He did really well on the plane when I moved here 5 years ago, but now he is 12 and has earlyish stage chronic kidney disease and will likely have recurring calcium oxylate bladder stones. So I'm worried it might not be as easy this time and I don't want to put his health at risk. Can you please talk about when it is best to take your cat with you and when it may be better to find them a new loving home?? It would break my heart to let someone else love Sir Henry, but I want to do what is best for him. He's a pretty anxious kitty. What is more stressful for a cat: a transatlantic flight plus new home or a new home plus new humans?? :(
I'm going to be moving out of my parents' house soon and taking my fur baby with me, so this came out at the perfect time!! Thank you so much for everything you do on this channel for cats 💖
I didn't realize gabapentin could be used in cats. Its a great pain control drug for people. Never thought of a compounding pharmacy for vet needs. Great ideas. And great kitty footage 😀
Gaba helped with the pain of my late Bartok's cancer, too. It helped give him a last summer, of sunshine and grasses, and lots of snuggles! It's not going to be helpful for pain for all cancers, of course! (His seemed to be largely bone, btw) But, gabapentin is an AMAZING tool, that can be useful in such a wide variety of needs. 💕💕💕 Just a thought.
My vet prescribed gaba for my cat’s FLUTD episode earlier this year. An often stress induced urinary behavior disease where the cat will strain to produce urine.
I perked up when you mentioned gabapentin because I know a human who takes it lmao. Obviously, don't use a human dose on a cat or a cat dose on a human, but the overlap in pharmaceutical treatments is fascinating!
Ok, so I started watching "Away" on Netflix and within 10 minutes, I KNEW that was you! I had to pause the episode and go researching to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. So great to see you on a show and didn't realize you had an acting career too! Anyway, a few years ago, I had to move with 18 cats 3 different times within a year and a half. It was stressful for me just trying to get them all in cages. Other than one cat running off after taking her out of the cage in the new location and never coming back, we did ok. Lots of litter boxes around one location really helped with the move. I also had one cat spraying everywhere when we were in a location where a cat lived before but he stopped after about a month once he had the place smelling like him. Lots of BOXES! Leave them boxes everywhere!!! We have been settled now for almost 3 years and I dread having to move again. I've never used Feliway, but I may try it. I also use Gabapentin (aka Neurontin) for stressful traveling (ie vets). But, the point is, with 18 cats, any move is going to be super stressful!! Thank you for educating the world on our enigmatic and mysterious feline friends :)
Very valuable information😊and as always I just love the way you treat your cats. Whoever has you as their vet I can only say they are very lucky 😊 wish you all the best on your move😊please don't forget to let us know how everything goes and how you are all settling down in the new place 🐈🐕😊
nice to see to see you back vancouver vet, when i moved just over a year ago my cat hid inside my sofa for about 4-5 days,he came out at night to eat only,he must been very scared or stressed, but after that he was fine and loved exploring his new home and garden.

Thank you for making this video! I moved apartments in July and since then my senior cat has been walking around yowling every single night. I've taken her to the vet and done blood work, and she's perfectly healthy, just...loud. I'm glad to hear that this is a common stress sign from cats after moving. I am motivated to make the apartment more comfy for her!
I was moving to DC. Road trip. In PA, we hit a long traffic jam. I opened the doors on my cats’ carriers. One cat (the smart one) did not leave his spot. My little black kitty jumped onto my lap, stood up, and put her paws up on the steering wheel. Horns started honking around me. I opened the window a little to see if there were responders around. Others started yelling out “Toonces!” It made the traffic jam a lot more fun. (Saturday Night Live reference)

Very nice and informative, thank you 🤗👍🏻💐. It is true, our cats love nothing more than their routine. It makes them happy if feeding time, playing time and bed time are the same every day. Or almost the same. When we moved, we tried to maintain their habits best as possible, it worked quite well. I hope you and your feline friends enjoy your new home😸😸.

Moving is stressful but this video is a pure serotonin boost.
1:10 That cut to Mr Pirate on your shoulder is equal parts adorable and hilarious
I'll admit, I clicked this video immediately because I wanted to see more of that cute thumbnail cat
Whenever I watch your videos, or any other video with a cat, I always feel the need to locate and cuddle with my kitty 😂
When you said "you can guess because it comes up in so many of my videos" I thought it was going to be Squish That Cat!
This video is so necessary. See so many posts of cats getting lost when people move.
Dear Helpful Vancouver Vet,
You are wonderful.
This has made my day 2020 ain’t looking so bad now thx!
I'm watching you just to relax after the final Presidential Debate.
I'd vote for Mr. Pirate as president any day
I watch these videos dreaming and wishing I could afford to move to Canada! Would move in a heartbeat and would adopt this vet as well. Love Pirate. Love this vet.
Yay!
How amazing is to find this upload just when I most needed it. Thank you as always.
Mr. Pirate is so precious
Other then that very good resource to have, I do have one question though:
Any tips/tricks for Cats who like to hide behind objects? when I ask this I am refering to pull out drawers, because what happens is one of them likes to climb into drawers then go to the very back so I can't close it, and I basicly have to wait until they decide to climb out.
Great video thank you so much. We are moving across country on plane. Can you make a video giving tips about traveling on plane and moving? Thanks so much we love your videos💞
Good idea, I should make a follow-up vid right?
@@HelpfulVancouverVet yes pleaseeeee 💞 we are nervous about moving with our two baby girls 🐈 🐈
Just a thought.
Great to see the best vet in world again... missed the utubes.. hope your move went well.
Clawdia is the best cat ever! 😻
Very informative video. Thank you, Dr. Uri. Clawdia in the background in the beginning. That’s the cutest part ❤️ they are delicious for sure!
Wholesome as ever
The beginning is so cute.
Both you and your cats are very lucky to have found each other
Love your cats and your calm demeanor not to mention the wonderful tips you video for us cat lovers. Thank you.
nice to see to see you back vancouver vet, when i moved just over a year ago my cat hid inside my sofa for about 4-5 days,he came out at night to eat only,he must been very scared or stressed, but after that he was fine and loved exploring his new home and garden.
I adopted two abandoned cats a year ago and learned everything I need from your videos! thank you for being there and providing the info I need! Now, we were planning to move overseas and I am even happier to see a video of yours about this too!
I just enjoy watching this man interact with cats, it's really sweet with added silliness because of the cats.
Always loving the very good and informative cat content. 😻
Good luck with the move!!
I love these kitties. ❤️
this was perfectly timed cause I'm moving my cats tomorrow morning
Finally another video
Mr Pirate looks like such a good snuggler!
Love your videos they are so happy and friendly and informative
Awww! Holding Pirate like a baby!
Was so freaked out by the thumbnail, somehow the frame made it seem like a memorial. I could not deal with that kind of news right now. Please squish Mr Pirate a bit extra and good luck with the move!
Hi from England . Love this channel so much , my little Miss Molly certainly benefits form your tips in caring for kitties .thank you 😀
Your cat has such beautiful markings.
It makes me feel better that even the Helpful Vancouver Vet has shredded couches too.
We have missed you, good luck with the move
Hi, Doc! I’m Toby!
Your video came just in time because we just moved. 🤗
Good luck with your move!
Random side note: I saw you in Away and instantly recognized you. So awesome to see you in it!
I am now soothed 😻 Claudia and Mr Pirate magic
