i did this without removing intake manifold just removed alternator. it took forever it was pain in the a** but it worked. with removing intake manifold or without its hard and time consuming.
You can also remove the oil filter housing as well - it will need a new gasket at some point, so do it now. The plastic coolant pipe is even easier to replace with it removed.
I’ve been looking everywhere on the Internet. Can you please tell me what hose is connected to the valve cover and the PCV valve? The hose that sits behind the engine
Two questions. One, how long did the entire process take? Two, would it not be easier, given you have removed both intakes, and additional peace of the mind, to R/R the other notorious plastic coolant hose located between the engine block and firewall?
I need to change the coolant connector also. Can I remove it through the front if I remove the alternator and the oil filter housing? Or do I have to remove the upper and lower intake manifold and fuel rail?
Dude these videos are golden! I looked down my engine bay trying to find out were i was losing coolant from. Turned out to be that plastic son a bitch that was leaking. When i removed it, it fell apart on where one of the hoses is connected and the head that connects to the block remained stuck. I also found a leaking gasket on the oil filter housing.
Yeah! there's so much you have to move out the way to get to that piece. I really wish they would have made it out of metal or aluminum. Anyways keep these videos coming. Also i followed your DIY on the water pump replacement too. Keep the videos coming!
Holy crap that's a lot of work! Nice job! I have the E46 M43 which is similar and for anyone who is put off by all of this work, an alternative way is to remove the alternator and oil filter housing and you can sneak in that way ;) It's a bitch but it's doable :)
@@hitom43 it’s actually not that bad, I had to do it for another job 😂 Just the upper intake but if you have slim hands and are agile, you may get away with just taking off the lid on the filter housing and use maybe a pry bar as leverage? Good time to change gaskets etc on the filter housing though if they haven’t been done in a while. If you need to change coolant hoses though, the intake is the way to go just don’t forget to order new gaskets 😉👍
@@TheCowgirlNiamh Hi! Could the orings in the quick connect hose ends break in the middle of disconnecting? I've just replaced today the connector under the intake and those hoses needed too much force to unstuck. Thanks!
@@hitom43 it depends how old they are? The quick connects can be really stuck sometimes. If you’re reusing them, put a bit of lithium grease or silicone grease on before reconnecting 👍
@@TheCowgirlNiamh Except one which goes to the bottom of the expasion tank , they seemed more than reasonable. Tomorrow I'll do the final connector at the back of the engine and after bleeding hope it will be allright. Despite the fact that in the end I replaced the parts needed, I felt so defeated by these quick connects. Still, pretty happy that I only needed to take out the alternator and the small L connector that was anyway replaced (+ airbox and cabin air filter asembly) to get to the piece. I think it could be done with removing only the L shaped connector if the quick connects arent stuck. Also, the grease is needed to help sealing or for later easy disconnect? Thanks!

Yep, think I tried the aftermarket version first and probably had to do the job a second time when recording this video but its been 7 years so the memory is a little iffy haha.
I've got a 98 328I with a cracked coolant pipe. I've got everything unhooked but having a tough time getting it removed from the back of the water pump. I'm pretty sure it's just an O ring but it's really fighting me. Am I missing something?
Hello mate, First of all great video. However you skipped the hardest part. On the squid there is a cable that runs back to the gearbox from the squid? or is that the oxygen sensor? I can't see or feel where it is connected. Cheers.
Thanks a lot! What year is it? I assume its a 318I, the oxygen sensors do not run off the squid, the most difficult ones on mine are the three that run to the starter. I assume you already spotted the three of those?
Yeah one runs to the starter and one to the gearbox. The one to the gearbox doesn't have a connector on it. It is just solid wire. It's a E36 318is 95 model.
Missed the steps that causing headaches to me. One - injectors. I can't get them off of the rail, and #2 the lower bolts for the intake. Something has to be on the lower section but can't find it.
GOOD AFTERNOON, WOULD LIKE A HELP, I HAVE A 318IS 4CC AND SHE IS NOT SAFE SLOW GEAR, I TURN ON AND SHE GOES OFF, AT LOW ROTATION SHE OSCILLATES, AND THEN NORMAL HELP, HELP ME DEFECT PLEASE PLEASE
You didn't show the most important part, how you put it back in the engine, I am having trouble making it fit in the hole, the rubber O-ring is bulging on the outside and getting pinched between the engine and the connector, I tried to wiggle it for about 6 hours, I tried putting WD-40, oil, soapy water, spit... to make it get in the hole easier, but NOTHING is working the bottom side is the more problematic one... you literally made a "where the connector is" video, but didn't show any tips on replacing the connector itself.
the plastic nipple on mine just broke .. do you think i could just glue it back ? its a 300000 car i dont feel like removing half to motor for a 20$ part...
@@headedwinter7356 the glue didnt hold XD ... had to go to a mechanic to replace the part by removing trottle body and all the part around , it cost me 400$ and unfortunatly for me the motor had overheat to much and had a burned headgasket... sold the car and bought a another one lol ... if you have the place to work on it it isnt really hard to get there. i drove for a week with the car overheating in traffic so if its the case for you dont push your luck and change it as soon as possible...
@@JM-fw5yz thanks for the advice, I've had the car for about a week and I haven't done any serious driving since the part went out ( mostly moving it around the house and parking it in other places). I bought the replacement part and replacing it myself sounds annoying but worth it.
I'm finally gonna tackle this during the virus. I'll be doing a few e36 t shirts soon. I'll send you one for all the help.
That's awesome! I'm hopefully going to get a few videos up while I am working around the house and on vehicles for the next few weeks!
Shirts? E36 you say?
Love those E36's - I really miss mine, favourite car I've ever owned. Love it when I see one in good condition, not many left here in the UK.

As has been said - only ever use a genuine BMW pipe from the dealers. They are about the same price (£16) as the aftermarket junk that doesn't fit.
