Marker pen basics - design sketching!

  • This video demonstrates and explains basic marker pen rendering techniques for product and industrial designers. I'm explaining how light, medium and dark tones can be used to add shape and 3 dimensional detail to flat sketches. Understanding this process enables the designer to sketch quickly, whilst communicating on a more advanced level with the client.
    If you're feeling generous, I'd very much appreciate the support - www.buymeacoffee.com/productdm - thank you very much!

    Have you done a video on plotting shadows in perspective? It's sort of like 3-point perspective in reverse; the light source is the third point.

    What sort of assessment do you do with the kids that leads on from this? I'm looking for a few ideas in this area and you seem like just the person to ask!

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  5 років тому +1

      Hi, I’d say a useful form of assessment following on from this would be to decide whether the sketches contained enough information for a 3rd party to fully understand them. A way of testing this in a school environment might be to have one student create sketches in 3D, with the addition of markers, and another student interpreting these sketches, then producing an orthographic projection of the sketched item. A third student could compare the 3D sketch and the orthographic projection, then feed back their thoughts. Hope this helps.

    I particularly like the pens you are working with as I have always struggled to work fast enough to ensure I don’t get those scribbly lines of the pen on each surfaced the objects.
    This gives the the drawing a more professional look.
    Can you tell me what these pens are please

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  5 років тому +1

      OTGill ! Thanks. They’re Copic markers. They offer various types.... these have a chisel end and a pointed nib end. They’re great as they can be really easily refilled. Your scribbly lines might be a result of using too porous a paper. If it’s porous, it will suck up the ink and dry more quickly than you can fill the area.

      @@productdesignermaker I just had a look at Copic Markers - £60+ for a small set!! Can you recommend a budget alternative?

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  5 років тому +3

      Mark Langford I wouldn’t like to recommend the budget alternatives as I have quickly discarded most other products that I’ve tried (other than magic markers). Copic are certainly premium priced pens but are high quality and have the ability to be refilled. Depending on what you’re planning, I’d start with 3 pens, same colour but different tones. If the budget stretched to it, I’d buy the 3 refills at the same time.

    what do you use to sketch with, if i use a biro, then whenever i use the markers the biro lines bleed a little

    • @productdesignermaker

      TobyBryant I use a papermate flair or a fine sharpie. Also Copic make a range of permanent pens.

The fact that you’ve done it is the really important part and hopefully you can take this new skill and use it again in the future.
