  • In this video we rebuild one of our solar trackers. This is a single axis tracker but can easily be a dual axis tracker.Living off grid. Off grid solar.DIY Solar tracker Rack upgrade for strong winds.

The conversion from rust to paintable is pretty awesome.

such a cool idea. But I can't help but think that a fixed panel array can be so much larger for about the same price and never have any of these problems. I just have 3 arrays all fixed and pointing in different directions. does the same thing but with so much more power.

Yes a fixed panel array can be larger. Each one of my trackers are 1kw (I have 6). To get the same output with a ground array I would need roughly 6 more panels. That would bring my total panels to 24. To build a ground rack to support 24 panels would increase the cost by three to four times depending on how cheap I could buy the steel. If I bought a commercial racking system the cost would be 5 times what I have in these. Also with a these trackers the panels are much easier to clean and remove the snow from.

Thanks for taking the time to put this video together and sharing. What do you think the design changes would need to be to mount six panels of the same size you have mounted now?

I would have to do the math for wind load and snow load for your particular location. I live in a very high wind area so I can't go much larger than what I built due to the limitations of the linear actuators that I use. I could purchase larger linear actuators but it would increase the cost significantly. If I just had to take a quick guess, I would use 2 inch square tubing by 1/4 inch thick steel to build my rack with.
