      You just LOVE to talk about that "Poverty Line," but take a gander at the Cost of Living. Where I live, it is possible to live fairly comfortably in a suburban home with $36.4 K a year. This is WITH average debts like mortgages and car payments. Without those debts in low income neighborhoods, I wouldn't be surprised if many of your views fell flat on their face whimpering with emptying bladders. The way things are going, the "rich" states may have struggling citizens who live ABOVE the poverty line because that cost of living is insane. Bottom line: Stop cooking your facts like CNN. The household income means LITTLE if the cost of living is decent or low.

    • @MS-xh7cw
      @MS-xh7cw 2 роки тому +10

      Facts are facts. When 25% of adults never graduated high school, 30% are making less than $15k a year, and you have a high crime rate it doesn’t matter what the cost of living is. I’ve lived in SC all my life and we have some nice places but half the state is a dump. And blame our crooked do nothing legislature.

    • @DarkPegasus87
      @DarkPegasus87 2 роки тому +4

      @@MS-xh7cw: I live here, too. 1) A government that does nothing is the best kind because the government is like a gardener with a black thumb. Do you want such a person touching what they will only kill? I don't.
      2) It does matter. Poverty mainly exists in areas with vastly disproportionate degrees of wealth. When you have poor people living in places that care more about the rich gated communities and the wealthy financial districts, you get hellholes like Detroit and Chicago. The cities look so great on the travel brochures, but you wouldn't want to live there.
      When the city you live in has a balanced amount of wealth, high or low, it's fine because the cost of living is affordable in comparison to the local wages. At that point, it becomes an existential question of "how much money do you really need?" In hellholes like Detroit and Chicago, no amount of money will ever be enough because they will NEVER be paid enough to live anywhere above a slum...unless they OWN some of the big business corporations in charge. These things DO matter, and most of that "Poverty Line" crap is decided by the idiots that screwed up Detroit and Chicago. They're like Sam Harris being called intelligent when he starts his argument off with a Think of the Children Appeal to Emotion. Clearly, those who think he's intelligent don't know what intelligence looks like.

      People like to lie to themselves about reality when it doesn't match what they want to be true. It's a big part of the reason poverty is so high here and positive changes are unlikely.

      Ummm, you sound like the folks I left behind there. Yeah there are plenty of worst places, but the author was talking about SC. I have watched Myrtle Beach become a huge slum like Kissimmee, FL. So I mostly agree with the author. I lived in Charleston for 30 years, and my family traces back to the king of England granting property. I have been to 45 countries, and own property in two. I have seen far worse situations in other places, but that does not excuse the issues in SC. On the other hand, SC certainly has some beautiful and charming places, and is nostalgic. But then again, so do the other 49 states, all of which I have travelled repeatedly, so I agree that all states have good and bad. To sum it up, I left there for valid reasons, mostly because SC falls short of other states.

    I grew up near several of the places on your list. These were once thriving, bustling communities. Union, Chester, Lancaster, and a bunch of others. Two big things happened. One is the interstate system. New businesses build along the interstates. I85 Charlotte-Spartanburg-Greenville, I77 Charlotte-Rock Hill-Columbia. Union and Chester are right in the middle of that big triangle. Too far from the interstates for new businesses to come there. When the cotton mills closed, that destroyed the economies of a huge part of the upstate. If the jobs aren't there, people have to leave to find jobs. The population goes down. It just draws everything into a negative spiral in terms of jobs, schools, everything.

I have so many great memories of riding bikes around town with my friends and through Presbyterian College which has a beautiful campus. We would drive to Greenville to go to the mall or the movies on the weekend. The reality is not everyone can live in big cities.. many people live in small towns and work in larger cities. Very interesting… I m a five yr resident of rural Dillon County. When I moved down here my sister was aghast as Dillon was rated the worst city in SC at the time. I’m surprised it wasn’t on this list. I’m also surprised to see Georgetown and Greenwood on the list. I have friends and/or family in both those areas and never have they complained about crime. I do think that a lot of the problems would be resolved - and would never have developed if the Walmart conglomerate hadn’t destroyed the small town businesses. It really is a shame.
    I am surrounded by five small towns that all lost so much when the Walmarts opened - as well as when all the businesses packed up and moved to China. Empty factories and vacant store fronts still stand.

The State is responsible for providing equal education to all. The local mayor are responsible for champion meduim to large scale companies to their market. With good jobs, the tax base will increase, that will cause the schools to improve, and the rate of crime will go down. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Just my 2 cents.

      I spent every summer of my life in Dillon and yes, it seems like I am related to half of the county. Everything changed when Walmart opened. Life wasn’t perfect as evidenced by the neighborhood that is still called the Quarters, but it was home. I did something wrong one day and I think that every neighbor knew and and had something to say to me before I made it home. Sitting on the porch was so exciting. Everyone shopped on Main Street on Saturdays. Walmart opened and the stores on Main Street began to close. Then the public library was burned down; It used to be a big rambling house on Main Street. Près Obama visited JV Martin Junior High during his first campaign and the media ignored the big hole in the roof of the gym. You may remember that a student from JV Martin attended his first State of the Union address. I have good memories of Dillon, but it is proof of the enduring legacy of slavery.

    Just for some context South Carolina was a large tobacco producing state. When the tobacco companies were sued and tobacco lost it's subsidies the trickle down effect from the loss of the annual "Cash crop" no only affected merchants but had ripple effect that you still see today. For an extra punch in the gut, the Clinton administration gave tax incentives for textile and other industries to move "Off shore" to take advantage of slave wages, again crippling the local economies.

      @BottomDollarOutdoors 2 роки тому +7

      Very true, especially in the lowcountry. Here in the Upstate, the textile crash you mentioned was the nail in the coffin. Almost every town, large and small, had a mill of some sort. When they all shut down and left, they left fast. People would show up to work to find the doors locked and management gone. Whole town populations were left unemployed. Things are starting to improve here in SC. With auto, tech, and import/distribution companies coming into the state in droves. As well as people from the north and midwest.

In fact, there's A LOT of a much more "free spirited" versions of rehabilitation places than most cities rather than right there in Greenwood. It is a very big recovery centered place. A lot of people changed their lives there but there is the higher percentage that gets stuck there bc they want to leave rehab one night and go get high, get caught, get kicked out and now they're rummaging the streets of Greenwood. This all could be bc a lot of actively high addicts are a lot of lumps on a log there. However, I'm a singer and their New spring church is the most amazing one, most talented one I've ever attended! It has its pros and cons but mostly, it'd make me very depressed just to simply pass through there bc often, the girls I met have passed away due to their choice in going back out there and getting high at the wrong place and the wrong time and losing their life. I live in Greenville S.C. And as far back as the 1970’s it was always known as little New York City and Dodge City as far as crime goes. I’ve been here since the early 1960’s and our crime has gotten worse but that comes with a growing city. What I’m trying to say is all the new industries and people moving here from other states has taken away the nice smaller neighborhoods we use to have here in Greenville

    I worked in Lancaster for a little while. I'm not from there. But from I heard, Lancaster had a lot of people employed at Springs Mill. From late 1800s until early 2000s that place employed a lot of people. The Springs Mill company even had a company funded park there called Springs Park. Apparently used to be booming in like the 1950s.

Mostly inconsiderate noisy neighbors, some people.are rude and most are bad drivers, jobs are hard to get into so I gave up on trying to get hired anywhere plus the only one that did take me paid $8 an hour and was part time which didnt help. I cant really walk anywhere here like I used to in California unless it's at a park or trail and I hate using a car to get around everywhere. I've lived most of my life in SC, and Orangeburg definitely should have been on the list. I left there after I graduated from high school and you could not pay me to move back. I only stop in to eat BBQ. One common factor with several of these towns is they relied on the textile industry (especially Union, Abbeville, Greenwood, Hartsville). There are no mills left. Another factor is they were small farming communities and nobody wants to work on a farm now. Of course there is nothing to do in small towns. Jesus, you're lucky to have a grocery store.
