Does Social Security get taxed by the Federal Government? There are some things you have to pay for in SC that was included in the property taxes where I came from. Water is more expensive here. Home and gas prices are much cheaper in SC. All in all my greatest benefit will be Peace and warm weather.
I don't know what all the fuss is about..... I was born in SC, have lived here all my life (65 yrs young) and will be buried here. You couldn't pay me enough to live anywhere else. Sure, sc has its problems, but then so does anywhere else you go. One just has to decide what state offers them the most, and suits their likes/dislikes the best.
I feel the same about where I live (big city in the west). I’ve lived here all my life and I can’t imagine ever leaving. It’s not perfect here but it’s perfect for me.
I lived in Charleston 3 years while in the US Navy. Best place I ever lived. I may well retire there. Why? It’s the people, beats everything else. Just plain good folks. Can’t wait to move back.
Thanks for watching! Yah, I'm not crazy about them either but at least they go down each year as your car depreciates! I do think the low property taxes far out weigh this.
I am a few years away from retiring back down in South Carolina. I love Bluffton and Beaufort. When I lived in Columbia, near Lake Murray, years ago I had found out that license plates for cars were kind of pricey.. is that still true?

I'm so glad I watched this video. I had heard about the Homestead Exemption several years ago but had forgotten about it until I watched this. I live on the lake in Greenwood and I'm 69 years old. It's past time for me to go file for the Homestead Exemption. Also quite a few of my retiring age friends live in other states so I'll send the link to them. Thanks for the video.
Hot, hot, hot humid summers that are the equivalent to 120 degrees in the West. Bugs and snakes aplenty . No such thing as strolling around in shorts because you will be eaten up unless you slather yourself with poisons. Tornadoes common but pale compared to the risks for hurricanes which threaten the beautiful city of Charleston and the coast regularly. #7 in poverty scale and leadership refuses to extend Medicaid to the many thousands without insurance. Have heard many say you have to be born here to love it. A lot of growth but mostly with impoverished people which doesn't bode well for the future.
Best state in the USA! Please leave if you don't like it. Front porch sitting, sipping ice tea on the veranda, waving to those you pass, even if you don't know them, love Barbeque, church going people, grilling, talk to the neighbors at the grocery, hard working, proud of our Southern roots, and love Our God and Savior! PS...The CAROLINA MOON is something to witness!!!
Don't listen to this nonsense it depends where you live. I've been here 36yrs live in the center of the state insects are not a problem. Much more pluses than minuses.
@@jayafow84 You may be surprised to learn we agree but why would you want to sell that and invite more who would soon wreak havoc on our environment? I'm for keeping Carolina beautiful and it's true that many who have an aversion to the negatives I described would think twice. As far as I'm concerned, I just tell people we Southerners are a bunch of low information red necks so better to stay away. It fits their stereotypes.
I just want to know who has Costco and Joann’s😂😂😂 my brother lived in Aiken for 20 years and it did not agree with his sinuses. There is a lot of foliage so you may want to take that into consideration. We are from Dallas, cement city, so it was difficult on him. Sounds like a great place to retire though.
We are in our late 60's. We would lose our lower property tax rate based on what we paid for our fixer home almost 30 years ago. We would lose 10% of the sale price on our home with such a move. The cost/risk factor of shipping our stuff across country would be expensive. We would not enjoy too much the humidity/summer heat. How is the humidity inland? Are there any mountains and foothills in SC? We would want all utilities: Electric, natural gas, water and sewer service. Garbage pick-up is fine, but taking trash to a local dump is also fine. Location options and price range for 1,700-2,300 sq ft homes in the 300-350K range that are newer, or have been fully rehabbed within the last 20 years?
Thanks for watching! I understand what you are saying. Yes, inland the humidity is just as bad in the Summer so this might not be the state for you. We do have the Blue Ridge mountains up in the Spartanburg area which might be a place worth considering.
Thanks for watching! Actually, we pay less for auto insurance in SC than we paid in GA! I always recommend getting quotes from a few companies. Also, you can usually save money if you get an umbrellla policy and incude your homeowners insurance.
As a Texan coming here, I'll tell you my list of disadvantages: You have to pay state income tax. The BBQ cannot come close to comparing to TX BBQ, except that you can easily eat it if you have no teeth! Lack of farmland in much of the state due to sand for your "soil". Racial stressors. Sticky weather July-August, especially. Run down towns in the countryside. Too many trailers. Now I'll add a plus- lots of churches, inexpensive homes, and friendliness.
@@ltcajh Thanks for watching! Yes, every state has its pros and cons, it just depends on what is important to you! We do have state income tax but our property taxes are lower to help off set that. I have not tried TX BBQ but prefer seafood myself! Unless you are in an HOA (home owners association) community, you will see trailers. Again, all about preferences!
Nice video. My wife and I live in Philadelphia and we are interested in retiring somewhere with low property taxes, great architecture, great food, and friendly peaceful people. I would love to get a list of communities in South Carolina to research.
i grew up in Greenville but traffic getting too bad because they been advertising for years, It use too be a peaceful quiet place but those days are gone my friend. Greenville is a great place to visit though. building too many houses cutting down too many trees which made Greenville Green! she forgot to mention our rainy season. i like rain so i am fine with it.
Thanks for watching and your feedback! . Currently, a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, who is permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-connected disability, may claim a property tax exemption of his owner-occupied property.
SORRY, WE'RE FULL!!! We do welcome anyone, just remember to leave your far left liberal politics where you're moving from. We are a conservative, patriotic state where we pray before high school ballgames, put our hand over our hearts when we hear the national anthem, say yes mam and no sir, respect our law enforcement, and drink lots of sweet ice tea. If you are like minded, you will love it here, if not, you may want to rent before you buy.
Yeah, no…for being the party of “free speech” and “freedom/patriotism” and “choice” you guys are the most anti American people ever. You don’t get to choose which AMERICAN CITIZENS decide to move or decide to vote for. That’s regulation. Aren’t you guys against regulation?? 😂😂😂😂 you guys are so cute, bless your heart 😂😂😂😂
Lots of confederate thinking still in the state…very good ole (white) boy club ish in the legal system system too. It can be a nice place but the culture is definitely southern and, as noted above, hostile to westerners. So, southern hospitality only extends to you if you are southern.
Thanks for watching! I've seen a few different definitions of what constitutes the Lowcountry, some include just south of Myrtle Beach down to the Georgia boarder. I've not seen Virginia mentioned. It's the part of the eastern coast that is actually below sea level.
@@TheLowcountry I was referring to the map of the Southern states. They include Kentucky , which borders on Ohio, but not Virginia. We were the original South.
Thanks for watching and your feedback! I think the taxes are relative to the location, since 2001 I would bet everyone's has increased but at least SC proptery taxes are the 5th lowest in the US!
Free tuition is not for just auditing. Paying students come first but I completed a Masters at USC Columbia and they always let me into the classes I needed during the 2-year program. You pay fees which, for my program, were highest first semester when matriculating and after that were negligible. Also pay for books. Great experience!.
I live in North Carolina and love it more than South Carolina, BUT if you are 100% P&T Disabled Military, you pay 0% property taxes in South Carolina. Wish North Carolina would follow their lead.
Hi, Im looking into Nc by the coastline up therivers. Would you know if NC taxes your pension? Also whats a good city to look at medium income on the rivers?? Thanks for any info..
Hi I really enjoyed watching your video. Can you answer this question I’m into fitness can you name a city that has the most fitness centers like LA fitness?
Thanks for watching my videos and the nice feedback! I don't think SC has the calaber of an LA Fitness however, the coastal city of Charleston and the capital, Columbia probably have the largest variet of fitness/wellness options.
Thanks for watching! SC provides an income tax deduction of up to $15K against any SC taxable income of an individual who is 65 or older by the end of the tax year.
Thanks for watching! Anderson is a great inland town at a very affordable price point! Please reach out if interested and I an refer you to one of my collegues in Anderson.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately you'd have a difficult time finding property in a gated community for that price point unless you look for a re-sale home in the 55+ community, Sun City.
Thanks for watching my video! Canary Woods is a very affordable, new construction community. Prices start in the low $200K range. I think it's a great option for first time home buyers!
OK Sue all good stuff but you missed the 7% state income tax. And the paltry $15k retirement deduction just doesn't cut it. Retirement income is 100% exempt in PA and the tax rate is 3.07%. After comparison SC income tax is 10x, that's ten times higher. Not to mention the 40% increase in real estate prices in Bluffton over the past 2 years. Better to visit than reside in SC.
All that is very true, but consider what you pay to simply live, and include your property taxes. Your energy costs alone are significantly higher than here in SC. I am an ex New Yorker from upstate. I paid almost 7 times the property taxes there on a house half the size of the one I own here. My heating bill alone was around 7 times higher than what I pay here to heat, cool, cook and wash. If you do the math, which I did, it is far less costly to live here than up north. You also have to consider the quality of life, there’s no comparison. Plus, I no longer have to worry about a liberal government taking my rights and forcing me to go along with an agenda that is abhorrent to me. And you guys elected Fetterman. That says volumes about PA.
We live in the tacoma Washington 30 miles south of Seattle and it’s crazy expensive here and we are ready to retire, our middle daughter lives in the UP of Michigan but we don’t want to live there in the winter time and our son just moved to Florence South Carolina, so we aren’t sure what to do but South Carolina seems like a good option. We have a couple of homes to sell here in Washington and I bet we could get a really nice home there. So much to think about. Thank you for this video it was really helpful.❤️
Hi Susie! There are three within a short drive from each other. One in Beaufort, one in Port Royal (part of the Beaufort area), and one down the road in Ridgeland! Hope you make it over this way!
Best greetings from the Rep. of Panama. I would like to know which cities among the safest ones as North Myrtle Beach, Beaufort and Mount Pleasant is good to open a car body shop for pdr (paintless dent removal) and food business as well as housing investment.
Thanks for watching! I think Bluffton, SC would be a very good area for a business. It's located right in between Hilton Head (to the South) and Beaufort (to the North) so you could potentially get business from all three towns. The Charleston/Mount Pleasant area is also a very good location but will be quite a bit more expensive. Another good consideration would be Greenville, SC.
Greetings from Panama City 🇵🇦 we actually moved to Panama from the US and we loving it. I hate to say it, but when it comes to safety Panama feels much much safer than most cities in the US…
@@ticktock2383 no more thsn Korea and my husband is from Busan. But USA is not safe as the person that moves here says... as well as is it the opinion of a relative living in M Beach
Thanks for watching my video Matthew! If you are 65 or older, SC lets you deduct the first $15K off your retirement income (401K, IRA, etc...) before paying any taxes. We do have a 7% sales tax.
6% is state sales tax but local governments add on top of that. I learned to stop shopping when visiting my mom in Charleston once I realized how much sales tax I was paying vs in North FL. I think they are about 8.5%. You also have to look at what they tax - like do they tax food - I think they do but not sure. They also tax you a personal property tax on your car and it’s not cheap.
Thanks for watching my video! Homeowners insurance is specific to each state/city/county. We in SC have not had nearly the claims for hurricane/flood damage as FL so in general, our policies are less expensive. I've lived in both states and from my experience, it's much less expensive in SC. Just for example, our homeowners insurance in Beaufort SC is approx. $3,000/yr (3,000SF home) and our flood insurance is about $600/yr. We live on deep water but are not in a flood zone but carry insurance anyway. Hope this helps!
I lived in Las Vegas for 35 years and it was outrageous to register my vehicles. It goes based on prices. Is it really that much higher in SC? I was considering moving there this year bc I am retiring there in a few years. Are you still there? If so, do you like it?
@@louisa2478 Did you ever make it to SC? I left Las Vegas in 2023 and lived in Indianapolis and now in the Blue Ridge Mountains, VA but would like to be closer to a beach community.
@@TheLowcountry Most counties and some cities tack on a little extra so they can get a piece of the pie too. In Berkeley county it ranges from 8 to 9%. Honestly if you do decide to move here I would avoid Charleston,Berkeley and Dorchester counties like the plaque. Home prices are through the roof and traffic is absolutely horrible. I'm native to this area and live in Summerville. I live right on North Main St and the traffic stays backed up in front of my house from early afternoon on during the week. If you enjoy slow moving traffic and the smell of car exhaust, not to mention the landfill or the papermill this might be the place for you!
your saying you can deduct up tp $15 grand at 65 .I'm assuming that's because of retirement age. What about if your 5 years younger and your on SSD can you then deduct $15 grand or is it still $3 grand
Social Security disability benefits may or may not be taxable depending on how much other income you (and your spouse, if you're married) may have. I would defer you to a SC CPA but my understanding is between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits. more than $34,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable. Thanks for watching!
I think it's a matter of lifestyle preference. Also, each town/city has something different to offer; the coastal cities are great for boaters and fisher and then you've got some inland towns in the mountains if you like to hike.
@@TheLowcountry I take back what I said. I did not mean the entire state . The low country is beautiful.I was working near Columbia and I couldn't stand it up there.
You left out the best hospital in South Carolina..Bon Secours. Also SC does not have world class hospitals. Just ok hospitals…..better than when I moved here twenty years ago. They are getting better. You left out the culture. Big change from left coast….for the better.

Thanks for your comment and watching my video! I'm glad you agree!
Just out of high school, I moved to South Carolina from the Mid West.

Does Social Security get taxed by the Federal Government? There are some things you have to pay for in SC that was included in the property taxes where I came from. Water is more expensive here. Home and gas prices are much cheaper in SC. All in all my greatest benefit will be Peace and warm weather.
Thanks for watching and your feedback! No, social security is not taxed in SC.
I agree, wouldn't live anywhere else! Thanks for watching!

Disabled Veterans: Veterans who have a 100%, total and permanent, service-connected disability rating from the VA, qualify for the following property tax exemptions:

Two private passenger vehicles owned or leased by the Veteran or jointly with their Spouse; one vehicle exemption passes on to unremarried Surviving Spouse if they maintain sole ownership

I just want to know who has Costco and Joann’s😂😂😂 my brother lived in Aiken for 20 years and it did not agree with his sinuses.
Hi, Paul. Maybe check out Kershaw County in SC.
Greenville is close to the mountains.
Stay where you are.
Better to stay where you are. You won't like it here.
What about cost of auto insurance? I hear thats where they get you.
Thanks for watching! Actually, we pay less for auto insurance in SC than we paid in GA! I always recommend getting quotes from a few companies. Also, you can usually save money if you get an umbrellla policy and incude your homeowners insurance.
Top ten disadvantages of South Carolina? Good video
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate you watching!

Lots of confederate thinking still in the state…very good ole (white) boy club ish in the legal system system too. It can be a nice place but the culture is definitely southern and, as noted above, hostile to westerners. So, southern hospitality only extends to you if you are southern.
Why is Virginia left out? We are Southerners.

@@TheLowcountry I was referring to the map of the Southern states. They include Kentucky , which borders on Ohio, but not Virginia. We were the original South.

Thanks for this info. Never knew this. Looking for a place to retire, but SC taxes state pensions so this is a no go for me.
Yes please, find another states
I’m from Pa, trust me it’s cheaper to live in SC than Pa. Additionally, no snow in the low country.

It's located right in between Hilton Head (to the South) and Beaufort (to the North) so you could potentially get business from all three towns. The Charleston/Mount Pleasant area is also a very good location but will be quite a bit more expensive. Another good consideration would be Greenville, SC.

Does the state tax your retirement income? from an 401k or an Traditional IRA? Is there a sales tax?
Thanks for watching my video Matthew! If you are 65 or older, SC lets you deduct the first $15K off your retirement income (401K, IRA, etc...) before paying any taxes. We do have a 7% sales tax.
6% is state sales tax but local governments add on top of that. I learned to stop shopping when visiting my mom in Charleston once I realized how much sales tax I was paying vs in North FL. I think they are about 8.5%. You also have to look at what they tax - like do they tax food - I think they do but not sure. They also tax you a personal property tax on your car and it’s not cheap.
Hi there. Can you advise how does homeowners insurance compare with the issues in FL? Is it as expensive?
Thanks for watching my video! Homeowners insurance is specific to each state/city/county. We in SC have not had nearly the claims for hurricane/flood damage as FL so in general, our policies are less expensive. I've lived in both states and from my experience, it's much less expensive in SC. Just for example, our homeowners insurance in Beaufort SC is approx. $3,000/yr (3,000SF home) and our flood insurance is about $600/yr. We live on deep water but are not in a flood zone but carry insurance anyway. Hope this helps!
