  • So this is my 1 year review of the 9Velo LV45. It is a carbon fibre wheelset from China. It worked great at first, but I've had a lot of problems since.

    UPDATE:
    9Velo got back to me, and agreed to replace the rear wheel.
    They admitted there was a problem with a small batch of rear hubs and have updated their design, so hopefully there should be no more problems moving forward.
    It's a shame it took me making this video to get a response, but everyone makes mistakes and considering the good value their wheelsets offer I believe they deserve a second chance.
    I'll upload a new video showing the updated hub when I receive it.
    Thank you to everyone watches and subscribes!
    Hope you have a great 2024!

      I wonder if their delay was down to them waiting on the new hub design that Hambini appeared to get (DTSwiss style), which is a much stronger design in general).
      That being said,
      A) takes very little time to stay in contact with the customer and give them realistic expectations on timelines. It's the silence that kills.
      B) offering you something to take down the negative review is exceptionally concerning.

      Wow. I recently asked a wheel builder to make me some very similar wheels. The price was 50% more than the last pair i bought, was getting a tingle of sticker shock. As i discovered 9velo online the next day... plus Hambini review. In light if your review, my friend suggesting i go for stronger rims, brass nipples, swiss hub and that the previous wheels have 10,000km on them. I want to thankyou, for dispelling such thoughts.

    Just got sent this video, pretty alarming. I am 90kg and have been riding the lv55 for a while, no issues. The hub may be different to yours, not sure. You're right its happening due to high torque and cracking the ratchet ring which looks from your photos is very badly supported. I don't notice this on mine! Hope you get it sorted, I'll ask them about this case.

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque 8 місяців тому +13

      Just checked, your hub seems to have a milled slot all around the ratchet ring (so there is no support). Madness, mine doesn't have that! It is fully backed with material

    • @Savrotir
      @Savrotir 8 місяців тому

      Hey PT, got the LV45s with your discount, thanks. Mine are fully backed with material as yours so no issue there. Though, they did develop after 5k-6k a rattling and creaking noise in the rear hub (checked vs a DT swiss dicut hub to make sure it was the rear hub doing the actual noise) which appears to be the same as here. ua-cam.com/video/URpbbmp26Iw/v-deo.htmlsi=mbNv6S5QoZm-kZ-O. Did not bother much as I am in the process of replacing the rear with a dt swiss 240 exp. Also I did notice that the 1526 LLB drive bearing was quite rough and removing the seal revealed a mess inside. Also replaced the front bearings with original NTNs 6802 and at least turning them without any load they are much smoothe. The front wheel was also offset to the left quite considerably. LBS was easy to fix though

    Totally get the concern about wanting to be appreciative towards companies giving things to review, yet also wanting to be completely honest & show integrity. Showing the whole story and your frustration will save a lot of cyclists the same frustration. Good work! Sorry about your experience - any thought in trying to take them to a wheelbuilder and getting a quality hub? That will put the rest of the wheel to the test.

      I don't have the rear wheel at all now, only the front one. If I knew they weren't going to send it back then I would've looked into getting it re-built, but it's all in the past now. The weight limit generally refers to system weight, not rider weight. It also includes bike + all kit and stuff on bike. For a 100 kg guy with a 10 kg bike, two water bottles, and a couple kilos of clothes / kit, you could be getting quite close to that 120 kg weight limit!
    I have a reasonably weighty friend who's about 110 kg without bike & kit and scary strong, he has chewed through hub internals and cracked bearings before. If you're a larger guy, finding the right wheelset is a wholly different challenge

    Hey! I've been looking at the brand for a few days now and I stumbled upon your video. I can see that starting with Dec 23 they started changing the rear hubs with a similar freehub as the DT Swiss, the ratchet system. So maybe you're getting the upgrade soon. Hope you get the wheels soon and please make an update video.

    Latest news from 9velo about this video as I asked for more infos:
    "We understand that you may have concerns about the quality of the hub after hearing about the hub failures. However, we want to assure you that we have taken the necessary steps to address the issue and improve the quality of our product. LV/CD 45 2.0 hub has a different inner system. Although all of the models are tested in the house and outdoors, unfortunately, we found a batch of problematic hubs last year (not strong enough interior teeth by raw material from a different supplier), which is not in line with our quality control. We have replaced the whole rear wheel for those who received the affected batch of wheels. And we have made sure of the quality control of the hub since.
    We offer excellent customer service and support to ensure that our customers are satisfied with their purchases, and that's why we do the best we can to resolve issues quickly and efficiently if there are any. "

    That exact problem eventually happens with most modern freehubs. I've just had a Shimano microspline collapse in the same way. Never used to happen with hubs from 25 years ago!

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 7 місяців тому

      I've got several old Shimano loose ball hubs that I've ridden for numerous decades. I still ride a first generation Dura Ace 6 speed cassette hub. I got it used for free. Still smooth and silky as new. I still ride 50 year old campagnolo record track and freewheel hubs. These hubs are legendary. They still coast and roll more than a football field from 15 mph.
      The only time any of my Shimano hubs have failed, I was riding repeatedly through knee deep creeks. That was my decision, I had to get out of a thunderstorm.
      These hubs only fail from user ignorance and neglect, like quite a few other brands. There are plenty of good alternatives. Affordable ones too, but I really like Chris King best. I'm a pro wheel builder, mechanic , mechanical inspector and retired machinist. My CK hubs have lasted over 200000 miles. I service them regularly. Before and after every winter. Just like my other stuff I ride in winter. I ride about 20K a year thru most any weather. I've never replaced a single bearing or part on my several CK hubs in nearly 30 years.
      On modern hubs, dummies believe they'll last forever because they use 'sealed cartridge bearings'. Nothing lasts forever. But that must be (not so) common sense.
      Most riders completely ignore ALL their freakin bearings, (we do happen to roll on them) because they're dirty, greasy and hard to see. THATS my job security! 🤑🤑🤑
      New Shimano microspline hubs are problematic. I've seen several of them fail just in a couple years. Shimano is devolving like most of the rest of the cycling industry. It's almost all marketing BS, designed perfectly.....
      to separate the 'suckers born every minute' from their worthless money. How is this not obvious to so many consumers? Maybe I'm just jaded 😂

    It looks like all but their cheapest wheels now use ratchet style hubs, so apparently the pawl hubs were a problem. I'm about 200km into their GV45 wheels with ratchet hubs and so far so good, with some 15% grades in there. We'll see after 2000K though. This video made me feel a bit nervous about my purchase. there's a lot to be said for the factory wheels, and warranty etc, these companies coming out of a country with limited consumer rights impose that on their customers. Here's the thing, you save money initially but if there's an issue its a nightmare to get things fixed/replaced, and of course the safety issues around poor products. In one of your pictures the hub look distorted, that would be inferior manufacturing - hub design/material was unable to contain the pawl pushing against it leading to failure - of course if they tested it under load they would have discovered this but its all about making money short term, Wham Bam! funnily enough I was looking at one of their wheelsets, not anymore. I just don't need to take the risk and of course customer service = zilch. If you hadn't made this video you'd still be waiting.

  • @schaeferdev

    I can't really see how this could be in any ways related to rider weight at all. Even a 60kg guy could put the exact same torque through the hub by pushing the same watts at the same RPM that you do. Obviously you would have to be pretty fit to be able to do that, but the point stands. The weight alone doesn't really have any effect on the hub, the torque does however. The rider weight is mainly on the axle.
    Also fits the time of occurrence, low-RPM climbing is when the torque on the hub is the highest.
    Anyways, what I am trying to say is I think you are giving them too easy of an excuse by mentioning your weight, I think this hub is just complete trash to be honest.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  8 місяців тому

      Interesting! Like I said I'm no engineer or mechanic, I just assumed more weight would mean more force on the hub. I guess the weight would have more of an affect on the spokes and rims?

      Pedal cadence has nothing or very little to do with it. The big factor is rider size, climb steepness and gearing. This is a road bike application with a relatively light rider. Torque values are minimal when compared to other situations.
      A clydesdale mountain biking will produce FAR more torque on a freehub engagement system.
      Up from that would be a clydesdale mountain biking on an e-bike where you'd see even higher torque values.
      And the ultimate? A mountain tandem where you have two riders applying power to the rear wheel with two ADDITIONAL factors: zero front wheel lift and nominal - if any - rear wheel slip. So riders can just apply power without those two usual limiters. This is a nightmare scenario for a rear hub. This also explains why I've blown up six rear hubs mountain tandeming.
      I look forward to the hub carnage that mountain e-tandems will create in the near future!
      Three hubs can withstand very high torque loads:
      1) Chris King
      2) DT/Swiss (and even better it's predecessor, Hügi)
      3) Rohloff Speedhub

      Yeah you're 100% right, I think for most of us the majority of cycling products are a waste of money. Unless we're racing where the slight advantages make a difference then I don't see the point. We can easily get fitter and healthier using a cheap and simple bike

    • @rollinrat4850

      My favorite and most used bike is a fixed gear cyclocross rig.
      It was nearly free. I put it together from mostly a pile of old junk, besides building a baller set of White Industry wheels. I even got lots of these parts waaaay below cost used. The bike has been almost totally reliable for over a decade. I often attempt to break it. My first frame, given to me by a Euro 'cross pro who built it, died in a weird fatigue failure. Go figure. I use a bit heavier frame now.
      Fixed gear off-road is more fun than should be legal. It forces you to pay attention. It's a wicked training tool and a killer workout, even in just a couple hours. You will learn how to suffer if your mind is strong enough.
      It's the RIDER, not the freakin bike. Any bike will go where you will it to. I've ridden road bikes off-road since before MTBs existed.
      Fixing will force you to pedal correctly in a very natural way. It will also teach new skills and build more muscles. It will definately force you to push harder and surpass your pre conceived limits.
      Back in the day, many Euro pros rode fixed gear all winter to train or they raced on tracks.

    I think it is more related to your max torque up of the saddle than weight which is equally bad. Max weight would have more effect if you had broken the wheel somewhere else taking a big bump at high speed or during a descent or the combo high speed + bump + braking. IMHO

      That makes sense. The roads around here aren't the best, I've hit a few bumps for sure, but it's no excuse when my cheapo wheels survive the same bumps with no problem

    The website now shows that they have upgraded the hubs as of 10 Dec 2023 for the LV series hubs. I wonder if it is to fix the issue you had

    They don't use the pawl system for their better freewheels now, they use the same system as DT

    They shouldn't bust like that whatever your weight. Was considering buying a pair but for the 250 grams saving, it's not worth it.

    Hmm here’s where we’re taking a chance with those off-brand Chinese wheels. Maybe the rims are ok but it’s the hub that corners are cut for cost savings. The fact that they didn’t reply to your emails in a timely manner is not good. I see they replied here but they’ve already shown their poor customer service as well as poor material hubs. The ratchet system in there must not have been heat-treated, was machined too thin, or is a low-grade steel
    That weight limit you showed is usually for the frame not the hub. Your pedal torque is definitely more than listed on the website.
    Well I won’t be buying wheels from them or any Chinese company if they’re using their off-brand hubs. Stick with major brands hubs like Shimano, Hope, or DT Swiss and you’ll be fine.

    It is pretty unfortunate, even though they replacing your wheel can you able to use this video title to major component brand? Proabably you cant say dont buy this to zipp, specialized or sram etc.

    I'd say you were lucky - the crappy free wheels could have failed like the old Spinergy REV-X and you'd be reporting from a hospital bed! Dunno why each generation has to learn "If it (in this case the price) seems too good to be true, it probably is." but they do, but at least in this case you can share the experience with others so they might avoid the same mistake.
    These 9Velo mofo's deserve to go out of business and are lucky they're in a place where lawsuits can't catch up with them...but they'll probably keep-on with it using a new name to sell shoddy stuff to clueless suckers.

    You keep banging on about your weight... power and torque is what contributed to this damage and these are a product of how strong you are and how weak the hub is, not your weight.

    These kinds of CCP Companies always responds defensively, rude, and gaslight their customers and will ignore you. But the moment the defects gone viral, especially from a westerner, they will save face and suddenly give you proper service.
