    Hi Hambini!
    I see a lot of talk about wheel weight and lighter wheels being easier to spin up. But doing some basic mechanical calculations, I found that in order to accelerate from 0 to 40 kph, I'd need 4.94 kJ with 1 kg wheels, and 5.06 kJ with 1.5 kg wheels. That's a 2.5% difference in energy expendature. That would mean that in order to do the acceleration in 10 seconds, you'd need to do a constant 494 vs 506 watts, respectively. I've never tried really light weight wheels, but based on these calcs, it's a bit fishy. Are we that good at perceiving a difference like that, or am I missing something? with a lighter (50 kg) rider that difference could go up to 2.8%, but that's still not a lot.
    Thanks in advance!
    (My calculations were based on the translational energy of the rider+wheels+bike, and I've also taken into consideration the rotational energy of the wheels. The wheels were assumed to have a radius of 0,355 m with all their weight at the 'rim'. Rider weight was 70 kg, bike weight (without wheels) was 6 kg, so system weight was 78 and 79 kg. Rolling resistance, air resistance and drivetrain losses were neglected when calculating 10 second power.)

      I can't speak to the numbers but the difference is most notable when starting from stopped or at low speeds. the sensation when climbing slowly can also feel a bit different- less smooth with more noticeable dead spots in power stroke

    • @benfinesilver2250
      @benfinesilver2250 Рік тому +2

      There is no difference. The lighter a wheel is, the faster it spins up, but also the faster it spins down. Weight is weight. It doesn’t matter where it is, and it makes very little difference.

    • @username8644
      @username8644 Рік тому

      @@benfinesilver2250Well for cars it's well known that wheel weight reduction makes a noticeable difference. I would imagine it's the same for a bike.

    • @benfinesilver2250
      @benfinesilver2250 Рік тому +2

      @@username8644 It’s honestly been shown that rotational weight makes no difference compared to any other weight aside from momentary acceleration. It’s a flywheel. Weight in general makes very little difference at all. The difference between a deep section and a shallow wheel is a maximum of 500g. For every 1kg of weight it makes 2w difference on a 3% hill, 3w difference on a 6% hill and 4w difference on a 9% hill. What you gain from weight, you lose more from aero. Deeper wheels can stall air in crosswinds, but that again also depends on the design of the rim. Some deeper wheels can be better than shallower ones if they are designed to be so.

    Are modern carbon wheels ( disc brakes) a serious option for commuting? Old school logic is that alloy is more durable but discounting the price difference - is there a downside to carbon wheels for everyday riding?

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 Рік тому +8

      If you damage a plastic rim, the repair becomes very expensive to replace a plastic rim. I wrench in a high end shop. Commuting and rough, seldom maintained roads are very abusive on wheels and tires. I've seen quite a few carbon rims damaged from a big nail going all the way through them. Another common failure is from high heat. People put their bikes on a car hitch rack and a wheel was too close to the vehicle's exhaust, damaging the plastic rim. This has happened more than just a few times! Then people (as usual) get mad at us for not warning them about the potential issue. I need to restrain myself from laughing at them!
      It's my opinion that carbon wheels are best saved for special events and races. High end carbon components are designed for racing and racers. Minimal weight is usually a major consideration. Strength aspects are often compromised to a bare minimum. I've seen enough issues as to completely ignore all the marketing BS.
      Race wheels are designed with minimal materials. They're designed for skilled athletes who are very skinny and lightweight. I've seen lots of rich yet overweight wannabes break all sorts of underweight, overpriced plastic stuff in the attempt to 'buy fitness and skills'.
      In many cases, high end, Uber light, overpriced race gear inevitably becomes job security for me.
      Remember, elite racers (who such wheels are designed for) are sponsored. They actually get paid to ride this stuff. They get this plastic stuff for free. If it's damaged or fails, the sponsor simply provides another. Elite racers usually have mechanics that take care of everything as well.
      High end carbon gear and bikes are often very similar to super cars. They require special care and maintenance.
      I've built custom wheels for over 30 years. For day in, day out commuting on typical poor condition urban roads in all weathers, you are much better served by conventional 32 spoke wheels with heavier alloy touring rims that will last for decades with minimum simple maintenance. Custom handbuilt wheels can be built for your specific needs and rider type. They are an excellent value compared to 'one size fits all' prebuilt wheelsets. It's an even better value when you know your builder personally. This will offer a bit of recourse should any issues arise opposed to the warranty process and middle men you'd need to deal with.
      A commuting bike should be simple, extremely reliable and require minimal maintenance. My personal commuter and hardcore training tool is a custom steel fixed gear cyclocross bike. There is very little than can go wrong with my 'Crossafix'. All I need to maintain generally is oil on the chain and air in the tires.
      Heavy wheels are great for fitness and training as well. Then you get on your lightweight race bike for those special events and it makes riding seem so easy!

    quite a glowing review compared to the usual shit you get sent. Im a cheap bastard so im thinking about putting an order for the cheaper wheelsets. Thanks for the code and if they do ever materialise i'll be sure to come back and give an opinion. It will be the RV55's i'll be looking to pick up. On paper they are ever so slightly lighter than the set of Hunt Aero Super Dura's that I currently have on. Im enjoying them as they are quite punchy but they arent fast enough for me and fast = very fun.

      @@Rose.Of.Hizaki I can say with 100% certainty that all Hunt wheels are most definitely Farsports catalogue from the factory. They even told me themselves. Perhaps you might be right about your model, I assumed it was the latest one. However, whatever the wheel is, it comes from Xiamen via Farsports, as do all of their wheels.
      The rim, spokes and hub are “assembled” in the UK. By UK law, they can then claim to say that the wheels are “made in the UK”. I don’t mean any disrespect to you. It’s the truth.

    Why do carbon spokes make me nervous?

    • @davidburgess741
      @davidburgess741 Рік тому

      Let me count the ways, 1) a small scratch from road debris could cause sudden failure. 2) the interface between the spoke and the rim and hub are critical high stress areas. 3) Good old steel spokes and aluminum rims work really well. 4) Carbon isn't really recyclable despite "green packaging " Even coal can be painted green!

    I wish Hambini would've delved into the lacing pattern of the front wheel rather than just dropping a passing comment. It's practice that disk wheels have non-radial lacings because they're optimal at transmitting torsional forces from hub to rim, i.e., stronger and stiffer. It seems the front wheel of this 9Velos wheelset is taking a cue from DS cross/NDS radially laced rim brake rear wheels while, curiously, all the rear wheel spokes (DS & NDS) are laced tangentially here. Hard disc braking can transmit substantial torsional force through front hub; I wonder why 9Velo opted to go this route. I don't know how much of an effect such a config has in real world use. Just curious.

    Nice wheels. Maybe I'll give them a go when they've proven themselves in the market. 1100 is a very good price for a wheelset but too much for me to spend on an unproven brand. So I'm saving my money for the SES 3.4 (or maybe 4.5.) I'm happy to pay a premium (Enve is" middle ground" of premium imhe) for the wider internal width, hookless bead, proven track record, backed by a guarantee and 150-210g weight saving. fwiw you should never expect twice the price to give twice the product. It's called marginal gains for a reason.
