Im with you. Though I am still undecided whether I should learn Chinese or Japanese. Either way, if I may speak for both of us, I expect we will only begin in 2020. It took me over 8 years to be absolutely fluent in German. I reckon it will be in my forties by the time I can speak Chinese - should I stick with it. But good luck to you and happy new year x
Many years ago, I used to be an Army linguist. I spoke German, Vietnamese, and Chinese Mandarin. I haven't read, written, listened, or spoken it for almost 40 years. This last year, I underwent open-heart surgery to replace a bad valve, fix an aneurysm, and implant a pace maker. The pace-maker surgeon has a Chinese surname. Apparently, under anesthesia I started conversing with him in Mandarin. He, and the nursing staff had a good time over that and he told me about it in recovery. He claimed I spoke it better than he, and at his next family get together, he was going to bring me along. I didn't think I still remembered enough to not make a fool out of myself. So, while I'm home-bound and recovering, I thought I might see about brushing up on it.
when you were in the army, were you a linguist because you were naturally talented at learning languages, or did you study extensively and just eventually learn many languages? like, was it extremely hard for you to learn those languages, or do you have a strength for learning languages and that helped you in your job? i really like learning languages but i’m not super great at it, and i might want to get a job like that one day, though probably not in the military.
@@orlywolf2885 I was always a Math & Science guy. I struggled with English and all of its exceptions. I need hard rules. In Vietnam, I picked up some words and phrases out of survival and convenience, very similar to traveling through the US and ordering a soda or coffee. (Coke vs soda pop vs soda vs soft drink) In Germany, the Army had an introductory course for GI's. It helped us to fit in with basic greetings, counting, currency, transit schedules, etc. I figured I picked it up so easily due to my immigrant grandparents. While they wouldn't teach us German, as a kid I just picked some up and retained it until I was there. Mandarin Chinese was my first and only formal language training. I had the option of other languages but chose Chinese due to its rules and structure. It's almost like Math! It's monosyllabic and builds from there. That is why the "tones" are so important. Even their counting makes so much more sense than the western world. If you understand math and advance math, you should do well with Chinese or Korean. I took Mandarin for 2 years in High school and got pretty good at it. I got a A in both years of taking it and had all the Basics down of basic conversation. We were allowed to talk all we wanted in the class even if it was not class related as long as we spoke Chinese. The teacher would even correct us in our separate conversation. Loved it. But it’s been a long time and lost it all 😞 😢
Yes, they say use it or lose it... I learnt Greek on a teach yourself course of two cd discs and a course book . Then I live here for 20 years 😜,, unfortunately I am not fluent yet lol.... I'd say am the middle level not a beginner. .but it's not easy. I was pretty damn good at french in middle school , alot of my class work was given Trei- bien comments from the teacher. Very good. And I have been shopping at my local Chinese shop in my area and becoming very friendly with the staff ..so I am gonna make some effort and try learn some Chinese. Let's hope xx
I’ve been watching Chinese dramas and I speak English of course so I always have to use the subtitles. I’ve been hearing this beautiful language that I don’t know how to speak so my goal is to better understand the language so I can learn to recognize the words in the dramas without having to completely rely on the subtitles and simply because I want to learn different languages and cultures.

I just found this channel!!! Watching and listening to Zhou Shen inspired me to learn his language. So I'm attempting to learn a little bit and see how it goes.
great lesson easy to understand, the only thing I would like to suggest is that put the English translation at under the Chinese word by word, no need to do a correct English grammar. It helps to understand the Chinese structure.
Thanks for the suggestion. We did do word-by-word translation for every single sentence in the lessons, and a liberal English translation that makes sense. Sometimes without the liberal translation it just doesn't make sense and might even be hard to understand what situations are appropriate to use the sentence. So liberal translation is a must. Word-by-word helps with understanding sentence structures and grammar, but liberal English translation helps us understand how to appropriately use these sentences.

I'm Australian and we have a substantial Chinese population and with Mandarin rivalling English for most dominant world language I feel a duty to try learning it but at 38 years old it's a daunting task as I'm aware Chinese is a lot about intonation not just the words themselves. Ill probably have to rewatch these a lot to get any of it to stick. You also need other Chinese people to talk with to practice what you learn so you don't forget ofcourse and I don't know anyone Chinese but I appreciate your video keeping it simple never the less, xie xie :)
Hello!I am from China and I am a college student. I really want to improve my spoken English so would you mind let me teach you Chinese and learn English from you?
I'm 38 years old as well, and agree it's a bit daunting but exciting and important. I'm finding the ability to read sheet music helps me visualize intonations better if I think of the words as moving up and down the scale as I'm talking.
when i try to pronounce the Chinese words in the video, I end up laughing at myself 😂. Sorry guys, I am trying to learn this language for the first time 😅
both of my parents immigrated from the Philippines to the US before i was born. the city i live in has a large filipino community so i was still connected to my filipino roots growing up. however when i turned 18 (i’m 19 now) i found out that both my parents are part Chinese. my mom never mentioned it bc she didn’t grow up with much of the culture (she was raised by her grandmother). and my dad didn’t mention it bc he’s sinophobic but that’s another story. now that i’ve learned more abt my identity i’ve been trying to connect w my Chinese heritage. there were some Chinese holidays that we celebrated like Lunar New Year & the mid autumn festival/moon cake festival but many countries in Asia celebrate both of those and more without having Chinese ancestry. i’ve always wondered why i looked the way i do .. most of my filipino friends are brown or tan while i am pale. my facial features are also different than theirs. knowing where my family comes from helped me feel like i learned a part of me that was missing. i am not sure where in China my family is from. most of my parents family have passed now. they had my siblings and i later compared to most people so i don’t rlly have many ppl to ask. i hope to learn a lot more abt Chinese culture & the languages/dialects. thank you for these videos!!! :D

I need to learn to speak Mandarin fluently because it is common, and my relatives speak a different dialect.

This is the best lesson for any language I’ve seen on UA-cam!

Me too. Interesting that after hearing a lot of the Chinese I am picking now on the meaning and able to understand. But I would like to learn writing too.
Learning Chinese is one of my biggest aim cause I love the language and I just started this month. But the pronunciation is something else .
How are you doing so far ? With the language ? It’s been 4months since you posted this , any progress ? I kind of just started , now I want to know if I’m on the right track wit this channel , lol. Your recommendations are highly appreciated too though .

Zhou Shen is a fantastic singer :)
I'm picking up Mandarin again and so glad I didn't skip the first lesson. Still learnt a couple of new things!
After having tried to learn French and Spanish, I find the Chinese language actually easier to learn.
great lesson easy to understand, the only thing I would like to suggest is that put the English translation at under the Chinese word by word, no need to do a correct English grammar.

Hello Lili. I want to thank you for your great lessons. I have been learning Chinese for about three years. I study many courses on websites, apps and books. I even take classes on the weekend. The problem is my speaking skills and comprehension are not good. Your website came as a gift from God. The lessons are clear and concise and I can understand what you are saying and read the characters. I was surprised to find out that I have registered with your website some time ago didn't follow up with the lessons. I have subscribed and plan to use the channel more and more. Better late than never. Thank Hao Li. You are as beautiful as Halle. :-) But all flattery aside, your channel had renewed my hopes to learn Chinese. Xie xie.

The first Chinese language video that's not insanely hard, great job!
You cant just ask strangers to teach you. @@rodrigoneustadt6302

@@jasonsdaily6166 if you'd like, I'd be interested.
I'm 38 years old as well, and agree it's a bit daunting but exciting and important. I'm finding the ability to read sheet music helps me visualize intonations better if I think of the words as moving up and down the scale as I'm talking.
Thank you for being a good teacher.

I speak English and Japanese but I LOVE the way Mandarin sounds, its such a pretty language!
both of my parents immigrated from the Philippines to the US before i was born. the city i live in has a large filipino community so i was still connected to my filipino roots growing up. however when i turned 18 (i’m 19 now) i found out that both my parents are part Chinese. my mom never mentioned it bc she didn’t grow up with much of the culture (she was raised by her grandmother). and my dad didn’t mention it bc he’s sinophobic but that’s another story. now that i’ve learned more abt my identity i’ve been trying to connect w my Chinese heritage. there were some Chinese holidays that we celebrated like Lunar New Year & the mid autumn festival/moon cake festival but many countries in Asia celebrate both of those and more without having Chinese ancestry. i’ve always wondered why i looked the way i do .. most of my filipino friends are brown or tan while i am pale. my facial features are also different than theirs. knowing where my family comes from helped me feel like i learned a part of me that was missing. i am not sure where in China my family is from. most of my parents family have passed now. they had my siblings and i later compared to most people so i don’t rlly have many ppl to ask. i hope to learn a lot more abt Chinese culture & the languages/dialects. thank you for these videos!!! :D
I think this teacher is easy to learning . Thank you Teacher 🙏
